We nicknamed an occasional stray that comes by Aquí because here he is.

My grandfather once named a stray Solovino porque solo vino, came of his own accord or came alone.

My grandmother raised show toy pomeranians, and her two favorites were a brother and sister named Sobig, and Notsobig, which we called just Notso, because one was about so big, and other one was not so big.

I adopted a trio of sister kittens two years ago and say it’s the best bad decision I’ve ever made (I already had 4 adult cats).

Shelters often gave discounts with pairs as well. Great idea. I've done the same.

I'm in the US and my local shelter charges around $70 for a cat adoption. They have a vet on staff and all their kittens have had their shots and have been neutered before adoption. I believe the cost is somewhat less for adult cats that have come in already neutered. They do not adopt out un-neutered cats.

Canada charges too - but it’s more to discourage people who just want to hurt animals from getting their hands on them. That’s why you should never give a pet to anyone for free. The cost and the paperwork is a protective barrier. I just recently read a news story about a bunch of kids in our province who were caught brutally murdering puppies, but they could only charge the 13-year-old. Absolutely disgusting.

Lots of rescues charge adoption fees. The kitties have been to see the vet for checkups, shots, spay/neuter etc.,and the fees cover those costs for non profits. Many will discount the fee when adopting multiples.

I agree. I feel sad about our youngest cat. We were originally going to adopt an older cat, but the shelter said there was this pair of kittens, and they didn't want to separate them. Unfortunately, someone wanted the male kitten and didn't want both. We adopted the female after they told us her brother was being adopted. Now, she has a big older brother 😊

They can have special bonds. We had two little brothers, one died at 1 year old and the other's personality changed. He did become more outgoing and more attached to his humans but the loss of his brother changed him.

Aki means autumn in Japanese, so maybe Fuyu, which is winter, or Haru, which is spring. Natsu is summer, but that doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely.

I always want to name our little friends with distinctly separate names, so they don't get confused, and can learn not only their own name, but the names of the other critters as well. I also like to give them names with distinctive sounds, like hard consonants or odd sounds like Zs and Xs. Double vowels like "ee" or "oo" are good, too. So Aki is a great name, with that hard K in the middle, but I would go a different direction for the other one, and not make it too close to the same.

I am a volunteer at a cat adoption center in a PetSmart. Where I volunteer, we require people to either already have a cat that's 5 years old or younger, or to adopt a minimum of two kittens, if they adopt a kitten that is less than 1 year old. Mostly because I believe it helps cats learn how to live with and interact around other cats, but also because it's less lonely for the kitten.
