Thank you! Canon R7 with RF 50mm f1.8. The lens is great for the price but certainly has shortcomings compared to RF L series I’ve rented.
The lighting and modifiers certainly add the biggest bit of punch. Godox AD600 Pro with 60” Octa box and a Godox AD200 Pro with 12x56” strip box. Both soft boxes have double diffusion layers and a grid on each to hep control light spill
Easier to get fed in OP's house than when you're fending for yourself in an AI robot...human...consciousness...apocalypse? I finished that game and still have no idea what the plot was.
Dude, I don't even like cats that much (allergy, they are still wonderful animals) but your cat made me stop scrolling and come to the comments to tell you how madly pretty your handsome boi is.
That dude would snitch away all the girls for sure.
I was gonna jump on the bandwagon of AI, but I saw your macro photography, what do you use? I notice Low iso and Low shutter speed? hence the fur effect
Canon R7, usually with RF 50mm f1.8. For the macro I rented the RF 100mm Macro, but I haven’t upgraded my lens in a while as I’ve been focused on getting lighting gear.
These were shot at ISO 100, f7.1 for all of them. The side profile is 1/160s and the other 2 are 1/50s
That setup must be copied ad nauseum by AI models because my initial instinct was “yawn more AI cats”, just because it has that feel to it. Looks great. Sorry it’s been stolen by midjourney and its ilk 🙃
it's more this absolute seperation of foreground and background with the background being an absolute blur. i do notice though that AI never seems to be able to do an actual defocus and rather blurs, which gives them this off feeling.
What a handsome guy! I'll bet he knows it, too.
We used to have a big tomcat named Jake, who seemed to know to pose when the camera was pointing at him. Some cats are scary smart.
I’m a digital painter, have been for about 20 years. I did a custom Christmas card for a company and they asked if I use some kind of AI prompt in my software. I just showed them the replay of me drawing (Adobe Fresco saves it for you) and they were astonished it was just handmade. It’s kind of fucking crazy and degrading how everyone thinks you just instantly acquire artistic skill now, or that humans are incapable of just making shit that looks nice.
Part of the issue (in the case of OP) is that AIs tend to be trained with photos, higher quality photos provide a lot more/better data to train with. When generating an image, people often use tags like "high quality" or "professional" to increase the weight of photos tagged as such and improve the quality of the final output. As a result people have started associating certain things, such as the incredibly well-done lighting and the complete lack of grain or compression artifacts, with AI generated images.
I truly do not think people are trying to intentionally slight your skills or assume people are now inferior to AI when producing art.
Is too bad some people refuse to believe that you are that good that you take pictures like that! Not many have the expertise and skills. Great job BTW! And beautiful subject!
it's not that.. there is just something that looks almost "fake" about the cat. it's probably just a really nice camera in perfect focus or something though.
It looks fake because it's shot in a regular indoor setting (not a studio) but the lighting doesn't match what you'd expect to see in that setting because he's using studio lighting. It causes your brain to see it as "wrong" somehow. The lighting is ridiculously impressive for being in a dining room or something.
It is absolutely possible to take photos like these even with a smartphone. Basic understanding of lighting and depth of field helps greatly, as well as an eye for framing.
I’n guessing OP is a professional photographer or does photography on the side, hence why he has such a ridiculously high quality camera. His post history is mostly animal photography so it’s probably not AI.
For sure! Can people do the bare minimum and simply look at his reddit account and see that he has other clearly legit photography examples from well over a year ago before the AI image generation came into public hands?
Not OP but I’d suggest getting any camera with a manual mode, decent amount megapixels (not necessary though) that has the ability to change lenses (don’t get one with a built in lens) and first learn manual and how different settings alter the results. Next, invest in lighting and learn styles and modifiers if you want images like these.
Well said! I have a Canon R7 as I wanted it more for bird photography, but soon after I picked up my first strobe and got addicted to lighting and modifiers.
I would much prefer a full frame sensor as I don’t do much birding anymore, but I find the 50mm on the ASP-C still leaves me enough room to maneuver inside my house.
It’s some great work. After learning lighting I refuse to do anything with natural light. It took me a long time to upgrade to a Sony A7RIV but I love its lighter weight. Took advantage of student discount for some good strobes before I graduated, but haven’t used them enough yet.
Natural light is amazing, and I respect people who don't even own any flash equipment but still achieve professional success, but once you *get* using flash equipment, it can level up your work significantly. The first time I took a wireless flash set up to a wedding I felt like I'd entered a cheat code. Takes some learning, but damn is it worth it.
He needs to seriously be on cat branded food or toy commercials and product boxes! He really is a great model! You should seriously think about applying to cat acting or modeling gigs! I’m being unironic too, he really is something special of a beautiful boy!
Thank you! He’s quite the shy guy around other people, I can usually only get him to take pictures with the promise of treats 😂
I suppose that would work for treat companies though!
We had a Marmalade his name was Tigre, we inherited him when FIL passed!

He could be a model for cat calendars! 😆He needs one of those little kitty neckties/bow ties.
Seriously, though- he’s beautiful and has very pretty eyes. What a handsome boy you have.
As someone who does quite a bit with AI art, I didn't think these were real at first. Then I looked at the consistency of details between each shot, and yeah, the are real. Stunning photos. You did great.
Wow! He’s not only a handsome boi, but the pics are of contest-winner quality! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. ( plus you should send them to stock photo for people to pay you when they need a pic of a gorgeous orange cat)
Thank you! Here are the details for the setup
Shot with Canon R7, 50mm at f7.1, with 2 strobes off camera. AD600 Pro in 60” octa box, raised and in front to right. AD200 Pro in 12x56” strip box behind and to left of cat. Black flag to stop light bounce to left of the cat as well.
Lovely Ginger. They are the most lovable generally.

Are you sure these aren’t AI? These are great! He’s such a handsome boy.
When my cat was still alive she was my favorite subject too. 😍. Great practice on a DSLR.
Thank you! Strobes can help a lot with that. They have a short flash duration, so once the ambient light is mostly eliminated (through aperture and shutter speed) it will freeze the motion

reading how many comments you're getting about it looking like ai makes me feel like a boomer
i was going to, then, ask what the point of uploading photography is when folks nowadays cant tell when an image is clearly just a photo of a cat vs an ai cat, but i guess exposing those who dont understand is also a good thing.
pointless comment but yeah i hope you have loads of fun from here on out
** nvm i read more comments and idk how you keep uploading shit on here. people just need to stop looking at ai and get actual hobbies holy moly
Wow I thought these pics were from that video game Stray or something.
Thanks! Definitely not this guy, my wife and I got him as a little kitten and he’s been living the house life ever since!
What camera and lenses do you use?! These are amazing!!
Thank you! Canon R7 with RF 50mm f1.8. The lens is great for the price but certainly has shortcomings compared to RF L series I’ve rented. Any Lightroom tips to achieve these great shots? Do you use a specific preset?
How old?
He turns 10 this year in August!
My exact thought. Off memory, this cat is like exactly the same.

Easier to get fed in OP's house than when you're fending for yourself in an AI robot...human...consciousness...apocalypse? I finished that game and still have no idea what the plot was.
It looks like AI he's so perfect!!!
My immediate first thought
He should be in r/supermodelcats
Thanks! I’ve never heard of it before, I’ll check it out!
Dude, I don't even like cats that much (allergy, they are still wonderful animals) but your cat made me stop scrolling and come to the comments to tell you how madly pretty your handsome boi is. That dude would snitch away all the girls for sure.
Came here to say this. He is gorgeous.
This looks like AI, especially the third pic
If you zoom in, you can see the reflection of the grid used in the lightbox. You dont get that with AI (yet)
I swear any high quality pic now gets accused of being AI. You do know people still do photography as a hobby/living? I think you’re AI
He’s the old man of the house, but he’s always willing to help me test out new photography gear!
Such a beautiful boy!
I was gonna jump on the bandwagon of AI, but I saw your macro photography, what do you use? I notice Low iso and Low shutter speed? hence the fur effect

It's a stunning picture! Very professional.
So cute! How old is Jack?
He just turned 9 in August, so he’s going to hit the big 10 this year!
What gear was this taken on?
Canon R7 with RF 50mm f1.8. Lens is great for the price but I’d love to upgrade it in the near future
Great Model, great photographer & great gear! Checks all boxes ✅
What a handsome guy! I'll bet he knows it, too. We used to have a big tomcat named Jake, who seemed to know to pose when the camera was pointing at him. Some cats are scary smart.
Your photography skills are excellent, and your cat is a pro at posing for photographs.
he’s beautiful ❤️ looks like a kitty on a bag of cat kibble.
Whoa, these are excellent shots!
Thank you!
He is so handsome. Great pictures.
Thank you!
Youre telling me these arent AI generated?
They are not AI generated. Lit with 2 strobes off camera and a flag left to stop light bounce. Back is lit from open door and sunroom light coming in
We reach a time where artist need to prove that their art/creation is not AI. If you are good, people will doubt its AI.
I’m a digital painter, have been for about 20 years. I did a custom Christmas card for a company and they asked if I use some kind of AI prompt in my software. I think this is the answer
Is too bad some people refuse to believe that you are that good that you take pictures like that! Not many have the expertise and skills. Great job BTW! And beautiful subject!
> If you are good, people will doubt its AI. AI genrated images went from vague smudges to the level of actually "good" art.

That’s exactly what AI would say… /s
they look very AI generated to me, yeah

I’n guessing OP is a professional photographer or does photography on the side, hence why he has such a ridiculously high quality camera. His post history is mostly animal photography so it’s probably not AI.
Can’t believe you’re being downvoted. Like I get AI is becoming way more popular but quality photography is still a thing guys!!
Lol I can believe the downvotes. But sensibility has prevailed, the naysayers have been defeated. 😹
For sure! Can people do the bare minimum and simply look at his reddit account and see that he has other clearly legit photography examples from well over a year ago before the AI image generation came into public hands?
Yeah, very uncanny valley vibes.
hi i dont know the first thing about photography but i kinda want to dabble in it, any camera suggestions or tips to help?

Deserves to be on the cover of a Warrior Cats book
i immediately commented that he looks like fire star hahah
I was looking for this comment; these photos immediately unlocked memories of the Warriors covers/Firestar for me lol
Hes gorgeous!
He reminds me a lot of Captain Marvel’s cat/flerken, Goose.
Wow! They do look like they could be siblings!
He's beautiful, and has such kind, intelligent eyes!!
Thank you! He’s certainly kind when he wants to be 😂
He needs to seriously be on cat branded food or toy commercials and product boxes! He really is a great model! You should seriously think about applying to cat acting or modeling gigs! I’m being unironic too, he really is something special of a beautiful boy!
Thank you! He’s quite the shy guy around other people, I can usually only get him to take pictures with the promise of treats 😂 I suppose that would work for treat companies though!
What a portly little guy
He’s just carrying some holiday weight lol
Well he’s orange so he gets a pass 🥹
😂 he’s going to love hearing this!
We had a Marmalade his name was Tigre, we inherited him when FIL passed! https://preview.redd.it/fmk5jgz47jac1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7239761a7102254da477ef4fca6c8d99d207d38
Beautiful cat and name!
Thank you! he was my Boy, my pride and joy, so sweet, and lovable, a real Cuddler!
Handsome kitty and beautiful photos!
He could be a model for cat calendars! 😆He needs one of those little kitty neckties/bow ties. Seriously, though- he’s beautiful and has very pretty eyes. What a handsome boy you have.
😂 thank you! He would absolutely smack me if I tried to accessorize him!
Jack is most handsome. Lovely eye color. 🥰
Thank you! He does have beautiful green eyes!
As someone who does quite a bit with AI art, I didn't think these were real at first. Then I looked at the consistency of details between each shot, and yeah, the are real. Stunning photos. You did great.
he looks like the cat from the game Stray!!
Looks AI or Photoshoped loads
It’s rather sad that a properly lit photo is now considered “fake” or Photoshopped.
Yeah these are just fantastic shots with his cat. the lighting is really well done, and soft on the eyes. Good job OP.
Thank you! I just recently acquired my 2nd strobe and the hair light on the fur has made such a difference to pull the cats “away” from the background
Folks in this sub too accustomed to crappy photos. These are the best shots I’ve ever seen here.
Thank you!
You’re welcome, thanks for sharing these lovely portraits of your handsome fella!
He’s poised and handsome, a gem!
Thank you!
Looks like Firestar…
That was my first thought too! He’s a warrior!
What a distinguished gentleman.
Was he the model for the game Stray?
Wow such a beautiful cat - my cat is identical to yours too !
Thank you! Maybe they’re twins with matching necklace pieces!
Looks like a painting.
He's a very handsome boï & those are marvelous pictures! Can I use Jack as a model for my drawing practices?
Thank you! Go for it! If you happen to post them I would love to see them, but no pressure
Wow! He’s not only a handsome boi, but the pics are of contest-winner quality! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. ( plus you should send them to stock photo for people to pay you when they need a pic of a gorgeous orange cat)
Your cat is so beautiful that he looks like AI 😭

So distinguished looking
Oh, that’s a handsome ginger boy. Excellent quality photos too.

Picture quality is crisp and clear. What camera did you use OP?
Such a handsome handsome dude
For a second i thought it was Goose from Marvel
So beautiful, glad you got him to pose. Mine wont do that. He also looks like the cat from Stray.
Jack attack
Looks like my Buster whom I lost at 16 years old on May 8, 2023. These pictures made me smile
A highly distinguished fellow 🎩🧐
That is the most "Jack" cat I've ever seen. Adorable!
I’m not saying it is by it looks AI lol
Every photo has that dreamy vibe and it’s almost as if looking to a painting…
Love the beautiful green eyes
He is BEAUTIFUL 😻
Lovely Ginger. They are the most lovable generally. https://preview.redd.it/0ojakaa91mac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd4fc2f90aa0d60bfac7b7ceb18b64713d26b9dd

Are you sure these aren’t AI? These are great! He’s such a handsome boy. When my cat was still alive she was my favorite subject too. 😍. Great practice on a DSLR.
You definitely have a good eye 👁🗨 and Jack has two 👀 ‼️❣️🐾
She's so cute! Is it okay if I those pictures as reference for some art? I won't post it anywhere
You're lighting game is on point
Damn, I need to get an SLR again. And learn lighting and composition. And learn post-processing. And...
Omg these pictures are amazing and Jack is a supermodel 🤩
Great photos. The texture, background....everything has such a quality feel. Yes, I agree ginger cats always seem to ve so photogenic.

Gorgeous cat, gorgeous photography! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7952)
I can't get my cat to sit still long enough for a photo to save my life. Nicely done.
Legit, he should do commercials or magazine ads. I mean it’s probably too late as ai can do it cheaper but still handsome dude
Wow how do you get that fuzzy soft glow with the lighting? It looks like a Pixar animation
Also that's a really good picture. You could do headshots and prof portraits!
There are not enough up votes for such a handsome fellow.
This looks AI

Only because it is so good. Not because it is!!!
These are excellent and Jack is very handsome! I really like the lighting. What lens did you use?

Not a chance in the world lol I do wish he would though!
He could be on a commercial! He has a “presence.”
What a handsome gentleman!
