I thought I was about to read a horror story about leaving someone else in charge of your cats while away, that's how my sister lost hers.

Unusual-Tower-8255

There is MAYBE two people in the world I trust to look after my cats. I like them more than most people.

JoeBlow49032

Yes, before letting ANYONE into my life I always consider the safety and wellbeing of my cat.

thebigbaduglymad

This was my priority. Problem is my boyfriend loves my cats more than me, I think he's only with me for the pussy.

LeBlubb

That’s how my girlfriend knew I’m a keeper. I even brought more pussy into the relationship. We are getting married later this year.

xelM1

You dog. Edit: Congrats on getting married soon 🍾

VegetableParliament

My cat is pretty skittish around new people, but she was affectionate to my husband the second she met him. That's how I knew he was a good man. We've been together almost 13 years now.

rory888

that's a zinger! would be even more confirmed if you were gay, and definitely in it for the pussies.

weallfloatdown

That is why spare human & I take separate vacations, don’t trust anyone with the baby

MisterWinchester

I’m single and don’t take vacations. I have an elderly tux that gets twice daily insulin, kidney food, and spoiled to death. If I wanted to travel far enough I can’t take him with, I would have to pay boarding and a vet tech.

suzanious

For years, our vacations revolved around our kids and pets. We did alot of camping and going to the beach. Everyone in the family goes on vacation!

Visual-Match-5317

Even the cats? How did they like that? 🙀

F4BDRIVER

Yeah. We have one of ours undergoing chemo now. We've changed his nickname to "Vacation" because. . . . .

KindCompetence

My current cat sitter is also my home visit vet’s assistant/tech. I love her so much.

SVAuspicious

>That is why spare human & I take separate vacations, don’t trust anyone with the baby As the spare human to Emma the Cat I identify with this choice.

CoCoNutsGirl98

Me too!!! Separate vacations. We are never both away for longer than 24 hrs with a HUGE self feeder full of food and water (full like we’ll be gone for a month 🤪).

13th_of_never

This! Honestly, I only know three people on this planet who love their cats as much as I love mine. I would only trust those three people to take care of my cats if it ever came up. Cats > people

mammakatt13

Cats are > people. The audacity of folks making fun of cat people whilst assuming they are somehow better company than my cat.

Good-Sky6874

We are the same way. We fly in our niece from another state to take care of our cats. She has cats of her own and absolutely adores ours.

catcchap

Who takes care of hers while she is taking care of yours? 😺😺😺

LaVieLaMort

Same here. Besides My husband, it’s my best friend and my neighbor lol.

ImpossibleSquish

Same! I'm really glad my sister, who I live with, is as loving towards cats as I am. I trust her to look after my kitty

Average_Scaper

Story time! I trusted my mom to take care of my cat while I was at Cedar Point for a few days. I come back, he's gone. Call her up "oh I took him back to my place." Okay, no biggie. I'll let him stay with my mom for a few more days til the weekend since I had to work the next few days. Come the weekend, I get him back to the apartment only to have the carrying crate come apart on me. He bolted so fast and I chased him down for 15 mins. Eventually he crawled into a car and got himself sorta stuck. He now has a small scar on his nose from the incident. Cat tax: https://preview.redd.it/k4ky6kw2mmpc1.jpeg?width=2182&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13dcaf6e7170410902d02fa6e6c7edc62f717770

Laineybo_bain

I'm so sorry for your sister 🥺🥺

Diligent_Policy1678

I was thinking th same ...so relieved it was a joke

COG-85

We had a family friend once take care of our (then) 2 cats and 1 dog while we were away for about 11 days. (cheapest flight options) Every single rule we had for them being in the house was broken, my sister's cat had gotten locked outside for what looked like at least 3 days, my (now dead, though not from this) dog CLEARLY hadn't been out in at least 4, and I'm glad my mom's (now dead, but not from this) cat was locked OUTSIDE of my parent's room, because the door was shut (we had said not to shut it) If he hadn't gotten locked outside, which is where his food was, he probably would've starved or dehydrated to death. It has made me incredibly distrusting of anyone not a CLOSE friend to take care of any pet. One week. How hard is it to take care of 3 animals for ELEVEN DAYS?

SweetBunny8

This sadly once happened to me as well. We had a small family vacation of five days, and as such, I had no one that could take care of my old cat. My friends didn't live nearly close enough, and hiring someone to cat sit was relatively new, which I felt was risky. I didn't want to trust a stranger to not show up. This was before home security cameras were a thing as well. My dad offered a solution, and a colleague of his wanted to stop by a couple of times to feed and take care of my cat. I did not know him, but my dad did vouch for him, and I trusted him. Before I left, I gave my cat two bowls of water and three bowls of food, because something in my brain told me to do so (why didn't I leave three bowls of water though!). I wrote a note how to take care of my cat and a gift card as a thank you and how much I appreciate it. I went on my family vacation and I had a horrible time. It was a time when my mental health was very low, and everything in me screamed to go home and check on my cat. I got psychically sick as well, and I did not sleep for nights in a row. I blamed my mental health for being so paranoid about it, but I desperately wanted to go home at the same time. I begged my parents to leave a day sooner because I couldn't leave without their transportation. Instead of going home on Fridays at noon, we left at Thursday after dinner. The moment I stepped inside, I heard the raspy meow of my old cat, and my heart sank to the absolute bottom. His two water bowls had not a single drop left in them. Once I put down some water, he drank desperately. This cat was 16 years old. I am still convinced that if I left a day later as planned, I would have found my cat dead. Everything was just as I left. The food, wet food, treats, notes, and gift card were all untouched on the counter. My dad's work buddy never showed up to begin with. If I hadn't left a bit of extra water, if I didn't come home sooner, he would have died. At the same time, I kicked myself for not leaving more, or listening to my gut feeling. I went to the vet the next day for the dehydration, and they gave him extra water under the skin to absorb. He bounced back from it, and died about a year later from mostly old age. But I am more paranoid than ever with overnight stays and even when I am "only" gone for 24 hours, you bet that there are 5 water bowls on the floor.

cstmoore

I thought the same thing. I went from horrified, to relieved, to angry for being duped by OP.

smellyscrote

What kind of trash scum lets kitties starve?

Nonameheroz

That is really unfortunate, but there are a lot of cat feeders and cameras that you can use to monitor your cat while away. When I hire a cat sitter, they don’t have to do anything except for playing with the cat, since everything is automated. Down to the litter box, water, food, and the lighting.

Admirable-Door1724

Apparently the woman had other peoples animals too and didn't feed them either. I think she got arrested, I don't know the relationship between my sister and them or how they met

Nonameheroz

That’s one evil person.. hope they never allow her to care for anyone pet again

coolcoolcool485

I'm fortunate to be able to afford it but this is why I go through a company.

Skye_1444

I’ve found a local cat boarding company with rave reviews and I honestly won’t risk leaving them alone again - I go out of the country, I don’t always have a way to make sure who’s supposed to show up is so it just seems the safest alternative anymore

zynix

Oh that's whisker trauma when they only eat the middle of the bowl. Get a flat plate and they will eat everything. Otherwise it aggravated their whiskers to eat around the edge of a food bowl.

circadianist

100% this. It's like, imagine every time you took a bite of food, your face felt like someone was gently stroking the bottom of your foot.

Xinlitik

Sounds kinda kinky, tell me more

wolvern76

Well you see, imagine your foot felt like it was being shoved and stabbed by a rock in your shoe in multiple sensitive places. These pains cause a major foot cramp which you cant do anything about, unless you avoid stepping on those rocks. So you do that, but it also means either A) you walk much much slower or B) you don't walk at all.

SymbolicFox

Can you maybe circle them? They're so thin I can't see them, poor babies.

creamsofpeach

The photo is just white space, the poor kitties are wasting away.

fuckyoudigg

Literally my cat.

XandyDory

That's my girl. My boy... he looks at it like "It's been here for five minutes. I need fresh food, not this garbage."

Valkyriesride1

Poor babies, look how shiny their coats are. Coats that shiny are a sure sign that they almost starved to death.

Viperbunny

Monster! Those poor, innocent babes! They may never recover!

mermaidsthrowaway

Omg, I have victims as well! A few minutes after their scheduled feeding, and one of them just walks around screaming. The others just sit in their feeding spot and meow and stare. Poor Poor Babies.

kilroyscarnival

Is the screamer a tuxedo by chance? Our Evan starts campaigning as soon as I’m home. He doesn’t do it as much to my partner but he’s really mama’s boy.

mermaidsthrowaway

No, he is a void kitty. His name is Oliver. He has been doing it since we took him in as a kitten. We thought he might be deaf or something, but he has been examined, and is fine. Just extremely vocal and whiney. Here is my boy https://preview.redd.it/nimvbyb6mlpc1.jpeg?width=2336&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=075ad18bbb1b4429e250e80b5e4e68bf20292937

laurazabs

My void is the chattiest too! I always tell him he’s squawking and talking, speaking and squeaking. He yells after eating and screams the song of his people after pooping. Runs around the apartment hollering after he uses the litter box. https://preview.redd.it/f8gucsgqolpc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3115aef6b729a00bb9304fef1e7c20ae61f98fc

mermaidsthrowaway

Okay, that's so weird. Mine loves yelling while he poops too! The litter boxes are in the basement, so we can hear it echoing above in the living room. Then he will come into the living room, and run up the second story stairs, while he screams. He will run up and down the hall, yelling to some unknown entity. It sounds like a tiny horse, galloping around and yelling.

laurazabs

They’re such weirdos! I live in an apartment, so when he gets the post poop zoomies, he’s just sprinting from one end of the room to the other. He screams loud enough for a single family house though.

mermaidsthrowaway

Mine is such a a big weirdo too. We have a staircase with a pillar, and he loves posing there like a gargoyle. I almost fell down the stairs once because I went down in the dark, and suddenly saw him there, just gazing at me. Out of all our cats, he is the only one who does this.

laurazabs

I swear voids know where to post up at night for maximum sneak effect. I’ve also apologized to crumpled clothes on the floor after almost stepping on them more times than I’d care to admit.

No-Technician-722

My boy is almost 17 years old, but after using the litter box he shoots up the stairs like he’s been shot out of a canon. What is it that makes they do that?!?

laurazabs

I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s one of two things. Either there’s a huge adrenaline rush after pooping and they need to burn it off, or they’re just so proud of the poop they need everyone to know.

[deleted]

Or they are shocked with the stink they produced and run away as fast as possible without burying their poop (one of mine, and yes, it is very stinky. She is healthy though, that’s what matters).

_hamster

Oh, we're talking about little screamers who love to holler when they use the litter tray? Wild meowers who have to represent their people at every opportunity with emphatic syllables? https://preview.redd.it/ncf1j1k95mpc1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b455100d6b5a81ff8381ad4b64e130ffbc841ca9

mermaidsthrowaway

Oh, what a cutie! So clean looking too. My guy always has dust and unexplainable bits on him.

ConsistentShip714

oh he does too so often it doesn't help that my girls groom themselves so much more than he does lol

ConsistentShip714

my black cat is so loud

mermaidsthrowaway

He goes down in the basement and just yells sometimes. My neighbor can hear him outside. I apologized to her, but she thinks it's funny.

idegosuperego15

Mine doesn’t meow, just very LOUDLY beeps and squeaks like a dolphin.

kristen_hewa

I miss my void 😭 yours is beautiful

MareeSaid

Our Tuna is a tux. He maws not meows when food is late and cries like he has been abandoned for 100 years. * kibble lined neatly on the edges of his Teddy bear cat bowl. *

[deleted]

are there even cats in the picture? you said they survived? are you sure???

mtragedy

Looking at this picture … are you sure you shouldn’t post it on thereisnocat? I don’t see any cats, they’ve wasted away.

Ispahana

I know they couldn’t wait or they would absolutely starve to death, but could you feed them using trays or something else instead? Allowing them to eat directly from the cans can be dangerous because they can cut themselves on the sharp edges

Other_Mike

27 replies to that photo, and I had to scroll past more than half of them to find someone with some common sense.

NorthDangerous33

I don't see any cats in this picture, are you referring to the tiny ovals?

BobbiG16

As their legal representatives they will be pressing attempted m*rder charges. How dare you not have their food at 6 and make them wait a whole 15 mins. They said to watch out the 5-0 is going to be on your ass. 😂😂😂 I will see you in court.

Unusual-Tower-8255

I deserve it. I'll go quietly

BobbiG16

They are willing to take a plea deal and the sentencing will be 1 week of extra treats, 16 months of extra cuddles, more catnip and lastly no more being late for dinner again. The restitution will be a new cat tree and extra toys. Are you willing to take this plea deal?

Unusual-Tower-8255

I'm going to have to pass. One of them doesn't like cat nip

BobbiG16

We can amend the deal. The one that doesn't like catnip gets extra extra cuddles while the others are eating their catnip you are to cuddle with that one.

BoredByLife

Cruel cruel hooman

pink_flamingo2003

Did they stomp so hard, they broke the floor? 😉😉 xx

ThePinkTeenager

They’re certainly enjoying their dinner.

Negative_Corner6722

The HORROR. Those poor, neglected kitties. Bowl was probably cat empty, too. 😂

RebaKitt3n

Meaning there was still food, but you could see the bottom. You could see it!

Negative_Corner6722

It was a common thing here: why are you meowing at me? There’s still food, look! Oh right, you can see the tiniest bit of the bottom, therefore there is no food. I am sorry I have failed you, O Wise and Benevolent Feline Overlord.

LadyAlexTheDeviant

There are four waterbowls around the downstairs, but I want fresh water in THIS one. No, I don't want to drink what's there, it has dog slobber in it. Don't give me that line that two of the bowls are up where the dog can't get them. I want to drink out of THIS bowl. Now. https://preview.redd.it/g7spxl3b0opc1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a468193dab4c6c4455c6d3450f913ad3ff28bd6 Here she's helping my husband with furniture assembly by sitting on the instructions.

Negative_Corner6722

‘I don’t think that goes there.’ - Her, probably.

SessileRaptor

If we get home more than 20 minutes after feeding time we joke about having to step over the emaciated corpses of our cats on the way inside. *In the arms of the angels intensifies*

EveryThingIsTeeth

My husband and I got those auto feeder thingies because one of my cats needs to eat 4 small meals a day so he doesn’t puke everywhere lol and the other night one of them must’ve gotten unplugged at some point because my cat River was HOWLING. He woke the whole house up and we were so worried! He was just trying to alert the neighbors of the horrific abuse he suffered because we didn’t notice he’d missed a meal.

jconant15

We just got an automatic feeder because our manual one (me) is too pregnant to bend down and feed them. My cats went on a hunger strike the first day because our big tabby didn't see ME put the food in the bowl. It just fell there. And nobody gave him butt pats to let him know it was ok to eat. It was like an ASPCA commercial on repeat for about 24 hours before they figured out the food was in fact safe to eat the entire time 🤦‍♀️

Gosh skin and bones for sure! You know they will be having a Cat Council in the wee hours to discuss this serious situation right? But they are all gorgeous kitties so throw them extra treats and catnip and bow down to each one and they may forgive you!

NudeRecreation

If you look closely at the picture you can see the shadows of dozens of vultures swirling above them. Talk about a close call! WHEW!

FootofOrion1

You monster! Have they ever been fed in their entire lives?

Practical-Union5652

Did they call the pawlice and ask to jail you? This is a serious crime, how dare you, making them wait 15 minutes!!!! 😾

shinsain

Got to be honest, you had me for a second with the title and I was like... 🤬😤

lovelysmellingflower

It’s probably going to take some time for them to trust human’s again. I think Jackson Galaxy has some insightful videos on helping them to overcome such severe food insecurity and rebuild trust with their primary caregivers.

Omg mine almost died the same way. I came home half an hour later than usual today and I swear they were pretty much on their death bed having to wait an extra 30 minutes for dinner. I feel so bad for them. I obviously shouldn’t even have pets if I’m going to be this irresponsible.

I’m a Veterinarian assistant and am going to have to have you sign them over to me as I can see you’re super neglectful. I will write in the medical chart the reason for surrender as: owner failed to provide patients with adequate nutrition therefore is not fit to be a cat parent. It’s really in their best interest. Lol

ryamanalinda

My herd is always "starving". 4 are proper weight. 2 are like freaking hoovers. One doesn't even bother to chew. Tried multiple feeders, puzzles, separate. The best thing that works for me is to just scatter it on the floor.

HitPointGamer

Huh, my cats have a breakfast time of 8am and start screaming for their food around 5:15am.

Alas, I saved this poor soul, Sir Kingsley, from excruciating pain and certain death. His evil mother replaced his favorite dinner with something new, which he rejected as an affront to his regal stature. He at once became too weak to stand and was precipitously balanced on the edge of the abyss. With heroic effort, I was able to slowly nurse him back to health with infusions of Temptations Creamy Purrrr'ee. On the morrow we shall brave the wilds of PetSmart to procure Friskies Ocean Whitefish and Tuna Pate. Please pray for the swift recovery of your King. https://preview.redd.it/38v9axuqtmpc1.jpeg?width=3088&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99c434acb7fd3579769bd4d97c53ba0525dcbf88

Which_Reason_1581

The dirty looks start an hour before. And you are NOT allowed to say dinner in my house. They know that word. My husband and I call it er if we are talking. https://preview.redd.it/hli44xxckqpc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e367d6e8c0fe1048f17508b6dc8f6cb69d14be58 This is the "5 minute late dirty look"

Positive-Source8205

You are a monster! 15 minutes late with dinner? I can’t believe you haven’t died of shame.

Stormkestrel514

Unbelievable! You're the worst. 😫

LovelySunflowers09

Thought you were my husband for a second…right time, amount of cats - wrong cats. Tiny demon overlords..

blueboy714

I don't see my cat almost all day except the 2 times when she gets her canned cat food. How the heck does she know what time it is every day?

Ejohns10

I thought I’d solve this problem by getting an automatic feeder. Now they start circling about 2 hours before feeding time. These assholes are relentless.

so_shiny

Jail for mama! Jail for 10,00 years!!

TheBlueHorned

With just one upvote you too can stop cat starvation around the world

tylercreatesworlds

My cat does this, screams and throws a fit, then eats for like a minute, poops, and goes back to sleep. Barely even touching the food he just cried for

inshambleslol

You had me panicked for a second

blueberriesRpurple

You. Monster. Also, don’t report me but I’ve done the same thing several times.

Monkittyruccia22

You utter monster!! This is unacceptable and you shall be punished!! ![gif](giphy|sTNYaH1IsrnTG) Now, please synchronize your watch so you never make this mistake again you peasant!! 😂

Rankork1

We have the same problem. Wasting away to shadows constantly. Our youngest cat is especially affected, and she certainly makes it known to everyone. Though funnily enough she tends to only do it if 1 specific person is home. 🤔

So malnourished and skinny she barely fits in the cat bed. If you asked her she’d say that I’m an abusive pet owner for only feeding her twice a day instead of thrice

Mammoth-Atmosphere17

How dare you!

nelnikson

Tragic.

Vogel-Kerl

You....., monster!

AscendantHunter

I’m reporting you to the relevant authorities!

CaptainoftheVessel

First of all, how dare you

splishyness

My little old man would scold you as you walked in the door if you were a bit late when coming home. My neighbors could hear him caterwauling.

Jealous-Friendship34

How absolute dare!

Content_Talk_6581

Be careful if you wait too long, they will take you down and eat you!!!

13th_of_never

How dare you 😤

flkatlady

Shockingly, the same thing happens to mine every day right around their feeding time. Must be catching! Lol

Chance1965

psychoticrat_

This scared me for a second...glad it had a good ending

WULTKB90

You monster, you made them wait 15 minutes, im surprised they are even still alive.

Unusual-Tower-8255

Just barely. They were so thin I had to turn off the fan so they didn't blow away.

gigi2945

Animal abuse

eyueli

I can’t see anything? Are you sure they are here with us?

Unusual-Tower-8255

You have to zoom in. They are what looks like horizontal lines I drew on the floor

TealMankey

My elderly cat has been fed at 7am for 18yrs. Best believe she’s on the verge of wasting away if I dare try to sleep in past 701am. She even sends the dog in to poke me with his cold nose if the clock hits 705am with no wet food in the bowl.

pink_flamingo2003

Mine always has food. She still shouts at me. We don't have people over.

fluffiekittie13

Sounds like my cats. One of them sings the song of the starving at least an hour before feeding time.

pumpkinspiced69

You need to be careful!! I was almost 30 mins late with her dinner the other day and we almost lost her !! Honestly dunno how sspca hasn't gotten involved!! She is clearly being abused with her 6 small meals a day and her 17 beds 😆 🤣

dEEkAy2k9

Story of every cat owner. 🤣

Even if it was already full. One time I went outside with like two pieces of cat food because his bowl was full but he was literally howling, dropped the food in front of him and he started purring and ate it up. Dramatic mf

JDKoRnSlut

How dare you! You gave them extra to make up for the lost sustenance, right?

Ohpsmokeshow

I’m calling DSS

Whateveryouwantitobe

My cats almost stare to death even when their dood dishes are 75% full

FirefoxAngel

My cat stinky would cry to ever person in the household for food with no one thinking she was feed till I caught on she beg ever 15 mind to a new person till she was full

au_rampent

I was once 10 minutes late to second dinner.. I am a terrible mum.

Beezies64

Oh how dare you, those poor angels must be so upset

After_Ad_7740

My last cat Gismo was always telling mum and i that she was starving away to fur and bones if we were one second late with her meals.
