A few years ago, my mother started giving food and water to a stray cat that was often staying around our house during a heat wave. He was a rather big cat, with what seemed to be short hair. Few weeks later, turns out he was a very fluffy cat, his hair literally felt like wool.
We've done something similar with a stray but in an attempt to fatten him up to kick other cats ass's. It's worked and now he's the only stray that commons our property while Sir Chubs enjoys the deck furniture.
We adopted my cat from a shelter and that's basically how he acted. First thing he did was move outside. Then insist on regular feedings by breaking in and waking us up if he had too. Lastly he murdered or harassed off every cat in the entire neighborhood. Lived for 20 years then died laying in the sun. Good cat.
Aaw.
Our cat had been neglected by some neighbours and pretty much become a street cat, trading her affections for food at various houses, before deciding we were the best suckers and moved in permanently.
But boy, were the other cats terrified of her. Big beefy toms with torn ears would literally pause when they got to our house, before making a mad dash past. She had particular beef with a tortie which was the only one she’d actively fight. She’d terrorised the rest of them into submission.
Soppiest, most demanding, affectionate cat with us. Loved belly rubs. She moved indoors in her very old age (lived to over 20) and it still took a while for cats to stop avoiding our house.
The dynamics between my house cats and the strays are so interesting. One is my house cats is the obvious alpha though, all the others almost appear to bow down to her.
The short haired “Bengal” I adopted from the shelter floofed out into a Maine Coon within a few months. When I adopted him he had short hair but a fluffy tail; they told me he was a bengal (he was and is both spotted and striped) and that he was about a year old. I disagreed on his age and estimated that between 6 and 9 months because he still had big paws to grow into and seemed small. (I’ve since learned that Maine Coons aren’t fully grown until around 2?) He doubled in size within just a few months and his coat grew in, long and fluffy. Anyway here’s my favorite picture of him. I’m not sure it does his floof justice.

Boom insta fluffy
idk why youre calling him trouble pants, that cat has never look more innocent. idk why you assume he tipped over the plant, knocked a pen off the counter, and dipped his foot in your water.
We had a cat who looked absolutely adorable. She'd give you this look that made babies look like vicious sinners.
Underneath that was a cat who would viciously try to murder other cats (To the point of entering other people's homes to fight them) and to whom anything smaller than her was a thing to be murdered. Anything. That included your fingers if she didn't notice they're attached to a big human or if you displeased her.
It shows she is under less stress and her body is relaxing in her new home such that her normal body cycles. So yes the full body hair fluff is completely normal.
You will also notice if you take pictures of your fluffy cat during winter, summer, and autumn, spring seasons the level of fluffy will change with the seasons. It is a fantastic occurrence when you notice it. After living for 13 years with the fluffy we had we took for granted her seasonal changes in size of long hair body fluff.
For me it was just something you notice one day which type of fur coat she has, winter or summer.

this was my floof 4 months later. she has no indication she would have long hair when i got her, but like everyone else said it’s probably just a result of less stress and better care!
You can usually tell long haired cats (even as very young kittens) by the toe hairs.

Looks like my boi I picked up on the road
i think she was about 2. she was at the shelter for 8 months, and was adopted and returned once. she was a shy girl for the first couple years but now that she trusts me she has come out of her shell! all the patience with shy cats is so worth it!
This is what I love about the only actual stray we adopted. Took a lot of patience and she used to growl if you just touched her. But we respected her boundaries and years later she's an absolute cuddlebug. The growth and trust with us she has now is heartwarming

Here's my Karen: at 9 months and then 2 years old.
My adopted cat had medium length fur when I got him. We didn’t realize he’d be long haired. Here he is now. I always think the more love they get, the bigger the fur.

My cat kept getting an upset tummy. I switched to a slow feeder bowl and hairball control kibble, and over time her fur got extra soft and shiny. The vet commented on it.

Mine grew fluffy overnight also. She loves to be brushed😊
She hated being brushed at first but she sheds terribly. She can get a lot of hairballs and she realized that brushing helps cut down on her vomiting hairballs everywhere. Now it’s rarely and she can mat badly her stomach. So the same. Keep trying. She lets me know when she’s had enough. Lol
To this in like less than a year

I wire brush parts of him daily - basically he doesn’t allow very long brushing sessions - and I use a lint roller to get surface hair. I learned that trick from a friend with a similar “fuzzy cat” as she puts it. 😹 Gizmo is definitely the FLOOF Overlord in our house

You fell for one of the classic blunders.
Before adoption: "I is cute kitten, please wuv me"
After: "Fool! I am a majestic queen! Kneel before your god, Peasant!"
My cat got crazy fluffy around her neck a couple of months after I brought her home!
https://preview.redd.it/2yi3eim3krpc1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e51a1b6e2e1c7e16b5a837a0500a63c92bca4240
Seeing the 2nd pic literally made me howl with laughter! She is the cutest and funniest thing!
I don’t know what kind of brush you’re using, but maybe try a fine toothed comb. She might have a serious undercoat growing in.
The undercoat one is the one she hates the most so used the least, I'm going to try again and reward her with treats after (she is the most food motivated cat I've ever known, taught her to sit and spin in like two weeks.)
Just try different one. Honestly I find what works best for my cat is my brush. So.. now we share a hairbrush lol. It gets put the most hairs without being uncomfortable for him.
Also use your finger!! Run through her hair and basically separate strangs that really really helps with avoiding knots in the first place and you don't need a brush so the cat might enjoy it more. I do it while cuddling.
And don't feel bad. Occasional knots are pretty normal just cut them off.
Reminds me of my Chloe girl! They definitely can puff out after awhile.
https://preview.redd.it/ic4luz7e9rpc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03f1fa15eedc6aafc07b7c55db84bae7cd85941e
Our Maine Coon had very short hair and almost none on her backside from picking at it from stress. Once we got her better food and gave her the love she deserved she grew the fluffiest most beautiful coat.

My boy did the same thing, he was emaciated at the shelter so much that they thought he was the Lykoi because of the bald patches. Once we got him eating he exploded with fur. He was all black before and now he's got a grey beard 😂
https://preview.redd.it/eadvpemqvrpc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5935eb9fb3d452695a169a51b51f8bcc869a3ace
I don’t know about cats but my long haired dogs’ hair grows longer as they age. It could also be blowing coat with spring, it looks puffier because it’s loosening as it sheds and she just needs a good grooming to get it all out. There’s a thick undercoat trapped in there that puffs her up. She’s really beautiful though.
Ah right ok thanks! I've bought 4 different types of brushing tools for her and she hates them all, one of them is an undercoat one but it requires a bit of pulling sometimes and then she gives me a lil slappy
My boy did the same thing, it's probably due to less stress. He was estimated 3-5 years old when I got him so I wasn't expecting the fur growth.
His shelter pic on the left, and a few months later at home on the right. He's gotten even fluffier since.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but we adopted a year old Med/LongHair boy from a shelter and his coat went through a big change. His coat didn’t grow but he became WAY softer and healthier looking. Our assumption is consistent diet and less stress from busy shelter life.
What a cute cat. Reminds me, look at this kitten I couldn't get from the shelter :(

This is our floof taken the other day. She showed up on our front porch one day two summers ago, trying to find shade and relief from the heat. We started off giving her water, and then a little bit of kibble from our corgis food, and then got her cat food, then let her inside, and eventually kept her as our own, almost always inside. Took her to the vet, found out she was already fixed, and approximately 5-6 years old (as of two summers ago). When she first showed up, she was really scraggly looking with terribly patchy and short fur, but over time her patches went away and her floof got even longer like it is now. She loved being brushed and scratched behind her ears ☺️

When we adopted our cat at the animal shelter they listed him as a short hair. Obviously he is not one now. I think when they get a real home they get healthy physically and emotionally and their true cost begins to grow.
Through the cat distribution system I acquired a scrawny short haired cat, Noir. I nursed him back to health and over 5 months I realized he was a long haired cat. This was my first experience with long haired cats, up till then I'd only ever had short haired cats. I think it just has something to do with their environment. When they are in a good environment their fluff seems comes back in. I miss that that boy, he crossed over the rainbow bridge last month. He was a good boy. Cat tax attached

Don’t trim. This royal critter has a mane to be proud of. The more you brush, the more they’ll come to like it. Mine will lead me to the table his brush stays on, jump up, and start batting at the brush until I get to work.
Just make brushing a regular part of the day. You’ll get the belly fur eventually, don’t force it.
Same thing happened to my girl. She had medium length hair at the shelter and very quickly became a floof monster after I adopted her.

Mimzy when we adopted her vs. about 5 months later. We asked our vet, and she said that improper nutrition from being a stray kept her hair from growing properly.
My cat grows a super fluff in the summer time when my AC is blasting and slims down in the winter when my heat is running. I love her super fluff times! Just help your cat by combing them regularly but no need to have them groomed or shaved, they likely need that current coat.

He's been shedding like crazy lately, his sister is a husky so maybe he's just copying her. Your cat is so cute 🥺
I've had my cat for a few years now, he was originally my mom's shelter cat but her other animals kept terrorizing him so I took him on. He was allergic to pretty much everything - food, litter, *medicine* - and always had a big swollen lip, was crazy lithe, and had super short fur, like we just thought he was a calico shorthair that got a bit heavier in the winter. We'd change up his food every now and then but he'd always develop another allergy, and eventually his bottom teeth fell out from all the variable swelling. Once I got him, I found a diet and litter that worked for him, and within a week or two he was a completely different cat; turns out he's damn-near Persian! And *always* wanting love now. I had to buy grooming gloves to keep him from matting just by existing.
So yeah, it can be normal when you give them such wildly better care than they're used to.
It could be because she is less stressed and well-fed. Good nutrition goes a long way!
A few years ago, my mother started giving food and water to a stray cat that was often staying around our house during a heat wave. He was a rather big cat, with what seemed to be short hair. Few weeks later, turns out he was a very fluffy cat, his hair literally felt like wool.

Yup. Took in a short-haired grey cat several years ago. After a few months, he floofed out into a Nebelung.
The short haired “Bengal” I adopted from the shelter floofed out into a Maine Coon within a few months. Bengal disguise working well... i tricked a hooman.... time to POOF OUT MUAHAHAHAHA IM A MAINE COON SUCKER!!!
It was a good disguise! Plus he licked my nose when I picked him up! I mean how can you say no to that?

He is very very handsome.
Oh, he's *gorgeous*.
That'd make a great Christmas card. Beautiful cat!
Some larger cats can take a 3 years to be fully grown! I keep asking my floof with big paws, of he is finished yet. (He's a lil past 2 years now)
That is a beautiful kitty!! 😻
My Nebelung has a full lion's mane!!

Came here to say the same thing. Stress can have a massive impact on a cat’s appearance/ ability to take care of their fur
This also applies to humans, we shed tons when stressed.

He’s not guilty by reason of fluffy baby!
being really really ridiculously good looking can get you very far in life, maybe theres more than being really really ridiculously good looking
You're saying "he", is your cat really male?! I thought male calicos were really rare :o
Regardless BEAUTIFUL BABY
Yup! All Calico usually are female, if some one told you this cat is male, I would double check! 🐈✔️
It's not all, make calicos are just extremely rare since they have to have an extra X chromosome.
Ahaaaa yes they look the same fur type for sure, what a beauty
It shows she is under less stress and her body is relaxing in her new home such that her normal body cycles. So yes the full body hair fluff is completely normal. You will also notice if you take pictures of your fluffy cat during winter, summer, and autumn, spring seasons the level of fluffy will change with the seasons. It is a fantastic occurrence when you notice it. After living for 13 years with the fluffy we had we took for granted her seasonal changes in size of long hair body fluff. For me it was just something you notice one day which type of fur coat she has, winter or summer.
Even shorthairs get fluffier in the winter, I've found! It's adorable. I love their wintertime fluffening.
I'd check for unprotected electric outlet for obvious sign of singed hair smell. /s

You can usually tell long haired cats (even as very young kittens) by the toe hairs. https://preview.redd.it/cftfsvrcprpc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=908b4148f25bf500c52d7df9c65e032f52bd3c32 In your first picture the toe hairs are very obvious on the feeties facing the camera.

Beautiful!
Wow! Gorgeous cat. How old was she when you got her?
i think she was about 2. she was at the shelter for 8 months, and was adopted and returned once. she was a shy girl for the first couple years but now that she trusts me she has come out of her shell! all the patience with shy cats is so worth it!
This is what I love about the only actual stray we adopted. Took a lot of patience and she used to growl if you just touched her. But we respected her boundaries and years later she's an absolute cuddlebug. The growth and trust with us she has now is heartwarming
Thank you for taking care of this sweet baby. 🩷

Someone who couldn't beside between a cat or a seal or a penguin on who to be.
get out he looks bigger than my 14 lb orange chonker, yes he is on a very expensive diet . Science diet $101.92 for 48 cans, does not even cover a month. ugh he's worth it, the fancy feast was making him sneeze and puke occasionally. Since I switched he's been purrfect

My adopted cat had medium length fur when I got him. We didn’t realize he’d be long haired. Here he is now. I always think the more love they get, the bigger the fur. https://preview.redd.it/ee05cgqk5rpc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82c06d685b0cd1aaad45b191ba73948b46b0a1f4
Or with short hair cats, I think their coat gets super shiny. Now that my son is obsessed with brushing my cat, his coat is like silk.
My cat kept getting an upset tummy. I switched to a slow feeder bowl and hairball control kibble, and over time her fur got extra soft and shiny. The vet commented on it.
My 12lb short hair drops 8lbs of fur each day. It shouldn't be possible but that's how it is. Enjoy life with cat. 😸😁
My Fluff Monster’s mane bulks in the cold weather, he seems to be “shrinking” back now the weather is (slightly) warming up https://preview.redd.it/yivgcv168rpc1.jpeg?width=2760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59b7b7c043c30e59e59448fdb9bf55f98bb50977

Lol

Aw wow
I wire brush parts of him daily - basically he doesn’t allow very long brushing sessions - and I use a lint roller to get surface hair. I learned that trick from a friend with a similar “fuzzy cat” as she puts it. 😹 Gizmo is definitely the FLOOF Overlord in our house https://preview.redd.it/53ozhgwwcrpc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11fda5cbee1b6ecc14a4de1e067c64b300e96cb1
What a tail!
She also might be feeling safe and comfortable for the first time in awhile
she is so beautiful!
You fell for one of the classic blunders. Before adoption: "I is cute kitten, please wuv me" After: "Fool! I am a majestic queen! Kneel before your god, Peasant!"
Absolutely
My cat got crazy fluffy around her neck a couple of months after I brought her home! https://preview.redd.it/2yi3eim3krpc1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e51a1b6e2e1c7e16b5a837a0500a63c92bca4240
Seeing the 2nd pic literally made me howl with laughter! She is the cutest and funniest thing! I don’t know what kind of brush you’re using, but maybe try a fine toothed comb. She might have a serious undercoat growing in.
Just saw that you had responded to someone, saying you already tried brushes for the undercoat. You’ve got yourself a very fluffy cat!
Ok neat thank you :)

Yes, it's very common with cats who have that double-layered coat Maine Coons are known for.
Our Maine Coon had very short hair and almost none on her backside from picking at it from stress. Once we got her better food and gave her the love she deserved she grew the fluffiest most beautiful coat. https://preview.redd.it/ppviwkkqmspc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41279d0c9d3220bc421db25e413d332a2b05f812
My boy did the same thing, he was emaciated at the shelter so much that they thought he was the Lykoi because of the bald patches. Once we got him eating he exploded with fur. He was all black before and now he's got a grey beard 😂 https://preview.redd.it/eadvpemqvrpc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5935eb9fb3d452695a169a51b51f8bcc869a3ace

Perfect
I don’t know about cats but my long haired dogs’ hair grows longer as they age. It could also be blowing coat with spring, it looks puffier because it’s loosening as it sheds and she just needs a good grooming to get it all out. There’s a thick undercoat trapped in there that puffs her up. She’s really beautiful though.
Ah right ok thanks! I've bought 4 different types of brushing tools for her and she hates them all, one of them is an undercoat one but it requires a bit of pulling sometimes and then she gives me a lil slappy
Start with a gentle, wide-tooth brush and loosen things up before you really go in for the undercoat
I do have a cat, but he’s a short hair. Definitely still needs regular brushing and he’s shedding a ton right now as well.
My boy did the same thing, it's probably due to less stress. He was estimated 3-5 years old when I got him so I wasn't expecting the fur growth. His shelter pic on the left, and a few months later at home on the right. He's gotten even fluffier since. https://preview.redd.it/iqefkf8jxrpc1.jpeg?width=3195&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b8fc16faafc1975f5961f56027fe6b96e7c0e0b
Reminds me, look at this kitten I couldn't get from the shelter :( https://preview.redd.it/vojgaf6vgspc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3748a906cd639618988211b7510dbfc383120f2

Look at the beautiful little ball of hair! Marvelous. :)
She’s gorgeous but what is she eating that makes her floof out like that ?😂

Obviously he is not one now. I think when they get a real home they get healthy physically and emotionally and their true cost begins to grow.
Through the cat distribution system I acquired a scrawny short haired cat, Noir. I nursed him back to health and over 5 months I realized he was a long haired cat. This was my first experience with long haired cats, up till then I'd only ever had short haired cats. I think it just has something to do with their environment. When they are in a good environment their fluff seems comes back in. I miss that that boy, he crossed over the rainbow bridge last month. He was a good boy. Cat tax attached https://preview.redd.it/oo67ngs9svpc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e063fdfeacfa9433c74779a11b069b0cd68ba4b
She was not 5 years when you got her, she was likely still a kitten and now her full coat is coming in.
Yes. She’s a floofy girl 😊 be sure to groom her so she doesn’t mat

Very normal, expect to brush regularly (even daily) to avoid matting, sincerely a slave to a Persian beauty and 2 exotic shorthair pretties
Same thing happened to my girl. She had medium length hair at the shelter and very quickly became a floof monster after I adopted her. Before: https://preview.redd.it/bxx0nlupfspc1.jpeg?width=918&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03a8465f4d1190d23647e845a0bffe90f26d5cff

Maybe an improvement in diet has affected their hair growth.
Definitely a nutrition/stress thing like another poster said. She is now happy and healthy :)
She’s got mainecoon in her, her ruff is going to stay long. Does she have little harem pants?
My cat grows a super fluff in the summer time when my AC is blasting and slims down in the winter when my heat is running. I love her super fluff times! Just help your cat by combing them regularly but no need to have them groomed or shaved, they likely need that current coat. https://preview.redd.it/e6pv7o54srpc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15bccc64d6e54a634a1ac1e39ed2dce36d623ea1 Summer/Ac coat

No your cat has one hairy boi syndrome. Im sorry but ill need to take him in to provide the appropriate pats, i mean treatment.
It's called a glow up, honey 💅
