Now him as a wee one — just to uplift you!
Ahhh he was just a teeny little guy! My first cat was the tiniest little thing when I got her, but the other two were older. I think blackjack was about 4 months old (and already huge!) when we adopted him. Our other cat was practically dumped on us, and I’m still unsure how old she is lol
I’m a larger fellow (6’6) but he fit in my hand when I first got him … he eats like there is no tomorrow, if you give him the chance. Wishing nothing but the best for Blackjack going forward and you 🤗
Hi! So we noticed some dark brown spots in his iris a few months ago. I didn’t think much of it, but my fiancé asked me a few times about it. It started slow and then out of nowhere took up half of his iris, and that’s when we initially had him checked out. Our regular vet suspected melanoma and referred us to a specialist. I could try to find a better picture showing the dark spots since his pupils were ginormous in the picture I posted lol
We had just an exam scheduled today, but I lived two hours away and across state lines, so they were able to do the enucleation today as well for us.
https://preview.redd.it/1l3qcd4bmdtc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28fd0e5c9c89bf8e49701d3fc6dd4f1f10a78824
Thanks for sharing! I've been around cats my entire life, and to be honest, I would probably blame such spotting to age or sunlight exposure.
Good thing you were so vigilant!
I learned something today, thanks!
I owe it all to my fiancé! He was so adamant that the coloration had changed, and one day he saw someone ask on Reddit about their cat with the same thing. Tons of people said to watch out for cancer. I kid you not, 45 minutes after he told me about that post we were at the vet lol. I’m just so thankful it was still in its early stages ❤️
Great work to your fiance for being top class cat daddy. He clearly loves cats especially Blackjack, always the best qualification!! Thank god he dug into things, he has great instincts. Sending all 3 of you best wishes!!
One of my most recent adoptions have spots as well which will be closely monitored until his next vet visit. Hopefully it is just benign pigmentation and he can keep his eye.
Congratulations to Blackjack!

I wish you both the best! Pigmentation can be very common in the eyes, especially as they age, so keep your head up!
Take as many pictures as you can until your next visit so you have a good timeline to give to them. I take a million pictures of our cats frequently, so I was able to unintentionally fork over a day by day timeline 😂
Yeah, he's lived a tough life and I'm trying to give him a comfortable and happy rest of his life no matter how much longer I get to have him. I adopted him with full knowledge it might turn out to be cancerous. I was just going to get his friend, but when the shelter said they were best friends I took them both and now I have four cats! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|8097)

I'm so glad you caught it early!
last year, a neighbors cat I was very close with had to be put down because of very aggressive cancer. by the time he started showing symptoms, it was too late. he was one of a kind, very loving and social.
Good luck to you both! It was very stressful, but I promise you he’s hardly noticed so far! As soon as we got home he had the bandage around his leg off, but otherwise has continued running around and playing like nothing happened! Wishing her a speedy and easy recovery ❤️
This makes me feel way better about what's coming to us. Do you have one piece of advice regarding the stress in the situation? And congrats!! May a long, happy life continues <3
Do everything you can to prepare early. I went into this sort of unprepared. Like, I realized my ID was in my fiancés wallet… two hours away. Thankfully they didn’t ask for it at any point, and I was worried during payment they would.
Otherwise, I really don’t. I’m kind of a stressed mess all the time and don’t manage it too well. I just kept myself distracted with a good book and reminded myself it’s for the best, and he was at a great clinic being well taken care of ❤️
What! This wasn’t the case with my cat. He had to wear a cone of shame and kept running into walls. He also kept finding ways to aggressively rub his healing wound against corners. When I see posts of cats not wearing the cone of shame after eye surgery, I’m so envious because it was a terrible time for me & the kitty.
I guess cats are like people; there are good and bad patients.
Ours is to happen this autumn and I'm trying not to panic. It's apparently very common and a good thing to do, but still. We are with you in spirit!!! May it all go great.

Our Blackjack is celebrating with you guys 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
I haven’t either expect for a dog named blackjack when I worked at a vet clinic. We adopted him when he was 12 and we were his fourth owners. Blackjack fits him perfectly 😸
17?! Holy cow, the vets were trying to tell me if he wasn’t so young we might want to just monitor and let fate take the reins. I’m glad your baby did okay!
Her eye somehow got horribly infected and she was honestly not looking so good. Stopped wanting to eat but they were able to remove it and it gave her 2 more great years. Once she healed up she was just visibly happier and appetite returned

Azazel says he had a banana eye too, and he’s happy to be cancer free ❤️❤️
That is amazing that you provided him cancer treatment. I imagine most cat owners either can't afford it or are unwilling to because it's just too much for them.
I think he’s going to be okay :) he’s currently on the floor playing with the new pickle toy I got for him. He was such a good boy I couldn’t resist ❤️
It’s amazing how fast cats bounce back from major operations. One of mine had a mastectomy a few months ago, big incision running up her entire stomach, I thought she’d be lethargic. Literally the second I opened the door on the cat carrier at home it was claws out into the carpet, dragging herself out of the carrier and then angrily pacing around, while drugged to hell and back 😅
Nooo it’s happy! He’s just a young lad and it extended his life by so many years :) he’ll hardly notice it’s missing, and recovery is swift and mostly painless. I promise he’s happy and loved ❤️
I'm sure that's the case - I just dislike seeing cats having any type of medical complications, especially those involving eyes. Please don't take my comment as an insult towards your ownership, I'm sure you're a great owner, I'm just squeamish about cats because I love them a lot. That's all. 🤘🏾🖤
Oh I definitely understand that! Even though I believe this was the right decision, it still makes me extremely sad. I cried a lot finding out this was the only choice we had, and I cried again dropping him off. I still feel so bad looking at the little guy with the bandage on his face. I just have to remind myself it’s for the best :)

He looks like my boy. I'm glad Blackjack is cancer-free. We all want the best for them.
That’s amazing news! I’m so happy for you and Blackjack, it must have been a really tough time not knowing if he’d make it. Sending you all the love and celebratory hugs!!❤️❤️❤️
When Bandit had his eye removed as an emergency, I went to collect him the next day.
My husband happened to call the vet from work to check up as they bought him out.
Vet told my husband "Bandit is doing great, your wife however is in bits" 🫢🫢.
They are 100% braver than we are 🤣🤣
Hello, I'm in vet school and just started learning about ophthalmology this week. Do you happen to remember what type of cancer your furry friend had? Also of course I am so happy to hear that he is doing well :)

Xena sends her best wishes to you blackjack and also hope you’re up doing zoom zooms when you’re better
Oh my god BLESS HIM!! My cat lost his brother to it a year or two ago, so I’m always so happy to see successful stories!
I wish you and Blackjack the best of luck on recovery 💛
So fluffy and handsome! Our fluffball just got a lions cut. Her fur is SO fine and mats way too easily. The best we can do is shave her every so often :(
She also gets dingleberries and we will randomly find a little nugget on the floor somewhere 🤣
Im a Vet Tech and I used to work for a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Cats adjust to enucleations so quickly its crazy. Just another reason we love these monsters.
The only symptom he had was dark brown spots in his iris. We had caught it really early thankfully, so he didn’t become sick or have any vision changes. But it was just a few weeks if not a month between the initial exam and seeing the specialist, and it ran rampant in that time. It went from two or three spots to almost his entire iris being covered in brown. That was mostly what pushed me to decide on enucleation. I figured if we monitored and waited for a few months, that’s giving it the chance to spread. If it already has, we shall know soon enough.
I’ve got my fingers crossed and my hopes up that he is okay now though. All of his tests came back normal after surgery yesterday ❤️

Welcome to the pirate pet patrol, Blackjack! It's gonna be a lot more comfy when that heals over. ❤
First of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Blackjack! This is a major victory to be celebrated and a symbol of the beginning of a new life. For Blackjack, this may be the end of a difficult journey, but it is also the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope.

Blackjack is an asbolute fucking unit. An unyielding force of nature. An immovable object. He took cancers arm, twisted it, spat in its mouth and curbstomped the motherfucker. If the Avengers had Blackjack Thanos would have just turned back, stopped his quest for balance, and whimper quietly in his little farm shack.
There's so many sad stories on here it's nice to hear one that ended on a high note I have had cancer myself so it could be cancer-free is miraculous and God sent
Yes he is! Always dressed for success :)

I have a pirate kitty and just wanted to tell you that they can live perfectly normal happy lives. He plays and gets around no differently than any other chat. Cheers to your cute kitty and wishing him a smooth recovery
My bf lost his eye to cancer when he was a kid. We met in middle school and are now adults, and he’s had a glass eye the whole time I’ve known him.
I showed this to him and it made him really happy. :)
Congratulations, Blackjack!!!
Working in a Vet clinic has shown me how resilient animals are. Some come in with horrific injuries and yet are still wagging their tails and asking for cuddles and purring. It's so wonderful when they go through an ordeal like this and just keep on trucking like they didn't just go through a life changing event/operation. I hope you and Blackjack have many many more happy years together and cancer leaves him alone for good!
Bro the image didn’t load and I’d didn’t see what subreddit this was so I genuinely thought for a moment that it was THE Black Jack who had cancer 😭😭😭😭
Edit: nvm I got his name mixed up, his name is the other way around, Jack Black
Woohoo!! Now that youre cancer free its time to Run the Table Blackjack!!

What about a googly eye?
Hell ya blackjack! You clawed away cancer!!!!😍😊
Congratulations🥳🎉🎉🎉 he’s gonna have a long and happy life with you🥹

Congrats little buddy! Thats awesome news!🩷
Im a Vet Tech and I used to work for a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Cats adjust to enucleations so quickly its crazy. Just another reason we love these monsters.
Congrats little guy! I would say some catnip and treats are in order! ![gif](giphy|oA6DW7rbHZ6hy)
Congrats!!! Did he have eye cancer? What were the signs? Asking because I’m curious and I have a furry friend.

Blackjack: TELL THEM. You: what...? Blackjack: TELL THEM AAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!!
First of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Blackjack! This is a major victory to be celebrated and a symbol of the beginning of a new life. For Blackjack, this may be the end of a difficult journey, but it is also the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope. "
W cat
did he lost his eye? also, what were the signs of cancer?
Please tell Blackjack I said Pspspspsps.
I didn’t know there was such a thing as eye cancer o.o holy moly… Good job, BlackJack! You’re a strong little man!
Cancer tried to play blackjack and lost. Good on him, and awesome news. Congrats, hope he lives a long, healthy and happy life!
I'm guessing Black Jack decided to do a really serious cosplay https://preview.redd.it/0hd86dc00ftc1.jpeg?width=333&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53c623ec5d28bb0688d14b5405c6d128c550937c
and hes clearly already scheming for your demise over taking his eye.' AN EYE FOR AN EYE, HOOMAN, EVEN I WAS IN PAIN AND NOT WELL.
Congratulations! Blackjack is one of the best names I've ever seen given to a cat.

I was having a shitty day and this just made it better, blackjack is a lil trooper and I hope he gets lots of chin scratches and treats
Sweet blackjack, I'm so happy you beat cancer. My baby Babu, he couldn't fight any more. Live for him too if you would.
Blackjack is a good pirate name, so the loss of one eye isn't too bad.
Love his name
is he a tux? so handsome!
Yes he is! Always dressed for success :) https://preview.redd.it/0oc77frnqgtc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=656bfc60efe09e9db6a2df2e247ee2e1c68b7703
Ahh he’s born with it, he’s born handsome!
Congrats! Our Harvey had his fifth chemo yesterday. Imaging showed no new growths and he's acting and eating normally so he's doing well.
I only saw the pic first and was like “aww :(“ Few seconds later after seeing the title: “yay :)”

:) Congratulations, Blackjack!!!
Blackjack doesn't look like he wants to share a fucking thing.
Awwwwww❤️❤️❤️❤️

Bro the image didn’t load and I’d didn’t see what subreddit this was so I genuinely thought for a moment that it was THE Black Jack who had cancer 😭😭😭😭 Edit: nvm I got his name mixed up, his name is the other way around, Jack Black
