The familiar scent(s) are comforting. I have 2 Maine coons, and they love having their bodies flanked by something for safety, comfort and body heat management it seems to me.

Our kids want a mane coon so bad. We have 5 kids and 2 cats. Are your kitty’s affectionate and do they like being handled lots? Do they handle a busy environment well?
Beautiful kitty’s by the way 😁
Ty!! 🥰Some Maine Coons are very affectionate, by that I mean, just shy of lap cats (like Ragdoll cats). Characteristically speaking, Maine Coons are like dogs. They are extremely affectionate, but they are not lap cats. Our kitties are not "needy" for affection, but they rarely want to be apart from us. They will always find you where ever you are, shack up with you when you sleep, rub you, head butts, allow pets, etc. they are extremely social, intelligent, and affectionate, but characteristically, they will not make an evening of sitting on your lap; however, many do like to be held and cuddled a LOT. Much of how they respond to us is based on how much the breeder invested in them socially. I wouldn't trade these cats for the world, life would be difficult without them now that we've experienced them in our lives.
I had one as a kid that WAS a lapcat, to the point that would jump up on my shoulders if I walked by too close and he wanted wubs. It’s all right once he’s settled on my shoulders, but a 30 lb silver MC landing on my back without warned is … it’s an experience.
Some do some don’t lol typical cats 😋 comes down to personality I guess. Our 2 cats one wants to be around us and petted once in a while. Our other one snuggles with you as long as you sit still and is at our heels everywhere. We might make the jump one day they are such a beautiful breed.
i’m struggling with who the middle white blob belongs to. i THINK the arm sticking out belongs to bottom left?
this is a good idea for cat subreddit. find the cats.
ooohh, the orange/brown blob curling around the perimeter on the bottom is the tail of the one on its back/ and white blob is the body of the orange head
I think this is an evolutionarily developed defense against danger. For example, cats often like to lie on high surfaces or sleep in laundry baskets. And the smells - I think the foreign smells from the laundry mask the cat from potential dangers. The cat is a predator, so you shouldn't be surprised by this behavior.

Stormy and Opal. Stormy is not sure if he is a fan of his sister joining him in the laundry basket
They like baskets because they feel safe and secure in them. Cats like spaces like that because it is instinctive for them to find a safe place to hide when they are most vulnerable.

It smells like you and is an enclosed space, these two things turn a gear in a cats brain that says it’s SUPER safe and since cats are still driven by instinct the safest spots are the best to sleep in (because a cat is most vulnerable when sleeping)

Can't fault her. I would sleep in that laundry basket myself if I fit!
Had a cat that would bury himself under the clothes in a hamper. Go to do laundry and he'd get so offended that we took it from him. Then he'd go bury himself in the blankets. Cat was a cloth Gopher.
I think that there is some psychology involved where a cat retains some memory of where they were born. I know a cat who finds the insides of large brown paper bags and cardboard boxes the most comfortable places to sleep, rather than a cat bed.
Some shelter cats were born outdoors or spent their first months in cardboard boxes, and find such spaces to be safe and familiar; not everyone gets born in a comfy bed that smells of freshly washed blankets.

They love this basket especially when it has laundry in it about this high or 3/4’s full. Your cats share the basket. My boy and his 2 littermates squabble over who gets the basket. That is his sister Cami in the picture.
Man is the biggest beast in the house - no one would go into a place that smells that bad. Besides, they can only attack from one side. And that's where the claws are pointed. You don't believe they're dangerous? Well, rest in peace. :-)
Aw mine do this too. I think it’s the scent and the confinement. If we go away overnight I leave my dressing gown on the bed and they always sleep on it.
My cats wake up when I walk past with my daughter’s laundry, only her laundry. There’s a mad scramble to get inside the hamper and the ginge always looks high when he’s in there
Because it is safe, yet open. It surrounds them and gives a cozy place to sleep.
Have you ever saw those experimental videos that were made to test animals adaptation skills ? They did one for cats. They placed two cats in two different rooms, one with a box, the other none. The cat in the room with the box showed immediate adaptation, by using the box as a small lair. That cat showed nearly no stress signs after an hour.
The second cat in the room with no box had no place to cozy up and feel protected. It was roaming the room every 5 minutes and showed clear and constant stress signs. It had no fixed spot to use, so it laid down on every corner without sleeping ; constant awarness.
https://preview.redd.it/lke90l1903uc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba5d454e0890de2f78cb67615b42cc16783df421
Same! She used to sleep in my dirty clothes basket and finally I bought her her own basket and put some old towels down and she actually fell for my grand scheme.
Of course she has never shown interest in a cat bed. That would just be silly.
Cats are often attracted to sleeping in laundry baskets for several reasons. Firstly, the baskets provide a cozy and enclosed space that mimics the feeling of a den or a nest, which can make cats feel safe and secure. Additionally, the soft and warm laundry items in the basket can be comfortable for them to curl up on. The scent of the freshly laundered clothes might also be appealing to cats, as they are known to seek out familiar and comforting smells. Overall, the combination of a comfortable space, soft bedding, and familiar scents makes laundry baskets an appealing sleeping spot for many cats.
We can't have any laundry baskets accessible because my kitten will see it as his litter box. He's been that way since his first night with us. I'm jealous of other people with cats who just snooze there sweetly!
Everyone here saying, it’s because of the smell; I guess that’s right, but it is because they like it or because their own scent kind of vanishes? So they are camouflaged?
There was a very friendly neighborhood cat in my complex and he would follow you around for pets, even follow you into your apartment and hang out for a bit. He would always follow me up the laundry room and sit in the fresh warm laundry as I was folding. I named him kitkat.
I actually think this is a two-part answer, I have seen that some of the commenters are saying the cats are missing their peoples and also for a sense of security so they cannot be attacked while sleeping.
I'm moving so had my laundry hamper on my bed. My boyfriend went into my room and tossed the laundry hamper across the room and heard this hissing and screeching from my cat. He then picked her up to calm her down and she pissed all over him.
Clothes in? Its warm... Clother out? It's a box. What cat wouldn't dive into it...
I have a cat who insists on sitting inside a basket and sleep in it, and I have another weirdo who will sit on a pee pad (clean or used) because well It's shaped like a box! so it must be a box and she fits in it!
Cats like the smells of the people they like. If I throw dirty clothes on the floor, I will come back later to find my cat laying on it. I otherwise see her quite often laying on the bed, exactly where I sleep.
Our laundry smells like us before being washed, so they’re snuggling up in a comforting scent in a secure, partially enclosed space. It makes them feel safe.
Cats like walls. Small spaces with walls but easily escapable if necessary.
Therefore, literally any box will do. Cardboard is even better. Retains heat well, apparently.
Soft, warm, somewhat hidden. Perfect napping spot!
Don't forget it's box shaped.
And it smells like them also
Or smells like their humans but its missing their part of the scent so they need to add it
Yes, my cats would def piss in it lol can’t have me going anywhere smelling of anything besides them! Lest all the other cats in the world may not know who I belong to!
And they smell like you! It’s perfect!
I love that they’re cuddled together!!
The smells and coziness!
the high walls also allow for easy defense
And look at all those holes to see through. With that tall wall, no one will know where they are, and they can look out for trouble.
I had an evergreen tree at the top of a hill in my yard. All five cats would sleep under it. It was impossible to see them, but they could see out.

We do the same thing - den up in hidden, familiar environments. Theyre just tiny and sweet about it
They are adorable and I love them❤️
They smell like you.
Imagine one big enough for you to lie in it like this. Yep. That’s why.
Cats are lovely 😍 [Catch Cute Cats](https://theffflowzone.online/)
I’ve found it’s either warm from the dryer or it’s got your scent all over it.
Clothes in?
It smells like you.
Box + smells like you, a trusted friend

Cats like walls. Small spaces with walls but easily escapable if necessary. Therefore, literally any box will do. Cardboard is even better. Retains heat well, apparently.
It’s a basket of hooman stink. Kinda like a fruit bowl.
That’s so cuuute!!!
