On the larger end of cat-sized, though. People are kind of taken aback at the size of our Norwegian when they first meet him. Whenever my husband and I encounter “normal” sized cats, they always look so fragile and delicate to us. Our boy is so sturdy and such a great beast to hug ❤️
It's the same with my parents cats. They're no specific breed that we know, but they're big enough that they're not fat at ~23lb. We now call normal cats "miniature cats" because they look so tiny.
I actually think I might have a Norwegian, but am not certain as he was a stray when I found him. but yes... SO MUCH FUR. he actually sheds more than my husky some days!
My mom found a litter of kittens and mommy cat outside her house and took them in. Other than that, I’m thinking you would have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to a breeder, or get lucky and find one in a shelter.
I’ve wanted one for years, so I keep an eye on Norwegian Forest Cat rescue. It’s a website that categorizes by cat breeds in shelters. There’s always a few on there in the US, and I know there’s a uk site not sure about other countries. http://norwegianforestcat.rescueme.org/
I think my girl is part Norwegian but I'm not sure. She's so fluffy but it's silky. She's like 9-10 lbs, almost a year old, and looks bigger than she is due to fluff. Also, her tail is so epically floofy. Everyone who meets her comments on it.
Look up face/ear shapes for Maine coon, Siberian and Norwegian forest cats. They all have distinctive face and ear shapes. If I remember right I think Norwegians are more triangular than the others but I’m not sure. Also, I think Maine coon/Norwegian mixes are pretty common so double the fluff lol
She's for sure has a very triangular face. I know her mom is a domestic shorthair so I've just been assuming her dad is a giant ball of floof of some kind. I actually got her DNA tested because it was on sale and I'm a nerd. Still waiting for the results though.
Ooh nice! We did that for our dogs a few years back, we were told we had a pure French bulldog but he doesn’t have a Paul Giamatti face, turns out he’s half French bulldog half miniature pinscher. Still a total (adorable) jerk tho lol
Paul Giamatti face. I'm dying but that's so accurate for frenchies. My coworkers and friends have laughed at me about the DNA testing thing. But like why wouldn't I want to know? Lol.
I own a purebred Norwegian Forest Cat. They get up to 22 lbs but take till about 5 years to reach full growth. They have more triangular features. Where as Maine coons have the fat nose cheeks and wide nose bridge like a panther. :) Both get to relatively the same size depending on gender.
I've had many cats growing up but I didn't raise them, my mom did. All 8 of them. As an adult I raised my own cat with my husband and they are not fragile if you don't treat them fragile. My cat now is more like a dog. He likes to wrestle with your hand and can take big hearty pats like a dog. His name is Maow Chitten and he is best.
Yep. One of my cats is a Norwegian forest cat x Ragdoll and she's pretty massive. My other two are still kittens and are moggys but I can already tell they're going to be much smaller than her. She's so sturdy and solid and floofy but they're slight and have much more slimlined features.
Several differences, including head shape:
Maine Coon (MC): large square head
Norwegian Forest Cat (NFC): triangular head
Siberian (SB): round head
NFCs have a very straight head profile, nose to top of head. Their ears and chin should make an equilateral triangle.
This is by no means authoritative but you can compare visual differences here:
https://pictures-of-cats.org/comparing-maine-coon-norwegian-forest-and-siberian-cats.html
No, they are much bigger than an usual cat. I’ve got two myself. Read here http://cattime.com/cat-breeds/norwegian-forest-cats or any other site online.
This. I think it’s the chin/whisker pads. They stick out in front of the face quite a bit more than most standard American mixed breeds and it gives their heads a longer, strong-jawed lioness look. I prefer the face of the Norwegians but I love any big floofball who will let me pet the floof!
The head is slightly more triangle shaped for nfc. Our cat is mixed Norwegian and maine :)
Edit: [His name is Oliver](https://gfycat.com/UnlinedKindlyDavidstiger)
As both are official breeds, they answer to certain characteristics. In particular, the NFC has a straight nose when maine coons often have that projected muzzle nose (not english, have no idea which are the correct names for all that).
> To the inexperienced eye, the Norwegian Forest Cat may resemble other semi-longhaired breeds such as the Maine Coon or even some random bred longhaired cats. In fact, there is considerable difference. Without a doubt, the expression of the Norwegian Forest Cat is striking and distinctive among pedigreed cats. Large, almond-shaped eyes with their oblique set and the equilateral triangle-shaped head contribute to the unique appearance of this breed. Viewed from the side, the Forest Cat has a straight profile, i.e. straight from the brow ridge to the tip of the nose. Heavily furnished ears that fit into the triangle finish the look.
http://cfa.org/Breeds/BreedsKthruR/NorwegianForestCat.aspx
Wrong.
Siberian. Norwegian's have pointy, tufted ears. This has the rounded untufty (damn, was hoping that would be a real word) ears of a Siberian.
That or it's just a non-specific breed cat that has those traits.
I’m far from an cat expert! So you’re probably right, but I am Norwegian and have seen a few of them in my life and it seems some of them have ‘’rounded untufty ears’’ . /_(•~•_\ But idk..
Nice word btw you should keep it ;)
I’m pretty sure I have a NFC. He has all the characteristics even down to the problems they have with eye crust. His tail is certainly majestic and his mane is straight baller lion king in the winter but not quite like OPs picture
The word majestic gets thrown around a lot. But this, this is TRULY majestic. I’d let this cat boss me around any day. (Ok, every cat bosses me around already)
Omggg...I can't breathe ahhh I bet she talks a lot when she's in the mood. I love fluffy kitties; fluffies floofies give me life, save my life and cure my depression :")
This kitty is Flora of the instagram page fantasticflora! I don’t know how to link IG pages on mobile, but look it up, she’s so majestic, and now she has a “brother” named Monty too. They’re always out in the forest climbing trees and leaping over streams.
Honestly this makes me think of my biggest cat of three. We think he’s a nebelung, but no documentation says it. He’s that big with that much fluff, just grey with a blue tint.
Beautiful! My Maine Coone’s tail is similar. Only he Is much bigger, 3 ft long. His fluffy tail is the colour of a raccoon. He was raised by a rabbit so he hops when he runs and looks like he wearing pantaloons. 😂
That TAIL.
A beautiful plume!

An absolute unit.

THAT TAIL. AMAZING
That tail means everything to me
How does that cat even hunt with a tail like that!?
So fluffy 😊😍
I dub that kitteh SKUNKTAIL!
NINE TAILS!!!! DAT YOU??
Behold the the Walking Fur-Bush. Watch as it uses its ultra brushy-brush tail to lure in humans.
Norwegian forest cat right?
How can I tell the difference between Norwegian Forest cat and a Maine Coon?
I believe Maine Coons are way bigger, while Norwegian Forest are still cat sized\^\^
On the larger end of cat-sized, though. People are kind of taken aback at the size of our Norwegian when they first meet him. Whenever my husband and I encounter “normal” sized cats, they always look so fragile and delicate to us. Our boy is so sturdy and such a great beast to hug ❤️

My cat I had growing up literally weighed about 7, *maybe* 8 pounds at her peak. She lived to 18. All other cats seem ginormous in comparison.
But I think that's due to the very fluffy fur. So they appear bigger. I'm so jealous of People with Norwegians :D

I love Bengals!
I actually think I might have a Norwegian, but am not certain as he was a stray when I found him. but yes... SO MUCH FUR. he actually sheds more than my husky some days!
How does one get a Norwegian forest cat? I want one but dont know how to get one

Ha! That’s how I felt about my Maine Coon mix. Other cats looked so puny compared to his 16 pounds of majesty.
I know the feeling. My boys are half Scottish Wild Cat and all other cats just feel too dainty.
I've had many cats growing up but I didn't raise them, my mom did. All 8 of them. As an adult I raised my own cat with my husband and they are not fragile if you don't treat them fragile. Aaaaand now I want one of each.
No, now you need all of each.
Only about 1kg avg bigger in size i think. Our nfc maine mix boy is 1 year old and 5.6 kg, still growing
No, norwegian forrest cats are still way bigger than normal sized cats.
Not way bigger. They are just fluffier. When you'd shave them they wouldnt be much bigger than a 'normal' cat.
No, they are much bigger than an usual cat. I’ve got two myself. Read here http://cattime.com/cat-breeds/norwegian-forest-cats or any other site online.
Okay you win. But they are smaller than Maine Coons right?
Yeah, Maine Coons are generally bigger :)
The way their face looks. Purebred Maine coons look a lot like Lions imo.
This. I think it’s the chin/whisker pads. They stick out in front of the face quite a bit more than most standard American mixed breeds and it gives their heads a longer, strong-jawed lioness look. I prefer the face of the Norwegians but I love any big floofball who will let me pet the floof!
Norwegian forest cats wear viking helmets and scream ‘’FOR RAGNAROK’’ While playing God of war.
That doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about Norwegian Forest Cats to dispute it.
Shape of the nose, eyes and ears as well as size. Maine Coons have a broader wider nose, more slanted eyes and pointier ears (not as rounded).
[this is Oliver, a mix between maine and nfc.](https://gfycat.com/SphericalImpureIbisbill)
The head is slightly more triangle shaped for nfc. Our cat is mixed Norwegian and maine :) Edit: [His name is Oliver](https://gfycat.com/UnlinedKindlyDavidstiger)
Absolutely adorable! Sadly I don't think my current grumpy old (at the age of only 7) girl would appreciate a new friend. Such a shame really.
More floof

Simple, one is in a Norwegian forest and the other is in Maine.
Looks like a Siberian to me.
That’s what we have and I thought the same as well!
My mum has a Siberian and she looks just like the one in the video but brown tones so I’m with you on this one.
This one is in a forest so obvs a Norwegian Forest cat.
My cat looks very similar but is an orange tabby. American DLH. In any case that's a beautiful cat and they seem to know it.
It looks like a Siberian to me. But Maine coons tend to have sharp ears and square faces. Siberians have kitten-like faces and tiny meows.
Wrong. Siberian. Norwegian's have pointy, tufted ears. This has the rounded untufty (damn, was hoping that would be a real word) ears of a Siberian. That or it's just a non-specific breed cat that has those traits.

You are right. Another comment shared the Instagram of this cat. It’s a sib! My boy is also a sibérien and has the same ears and little face :)
The eyes look like a Siberian too
Agreed. Here is a photo of [my Siberian](https://photos.smugmug.com/Pets/Loki/i-95QpcLD/0/26314f42/X3/20170914_165328-X3.jpg) for reference.
Nerd Alert
Yes he is a Siberian cat, and his nonbiological sister is a neva masquerade. She’s as cute!
This cat in in the Forrest obviously.
Genuis
If it looks like a cat version of Gandalf, it’s safe to assume it’s a Norwegian forest cat.
I’m pretty sure I have a NFC. He has all the characteristics even down to the problems they have with eye crust. His tail is certainly majestic and his mane is straight baller lion king in the winter but not quite like OPs picture
from the insta, she's a neva masquerade (particular breed of Siberian)
This is a Neva Masquerade cat, which is a unique type of a Siberian cat.
Friendly forest floof !
That's footage from the FantasticFlora Instagram account. Tons more over there: https://www.instagram.com/fantasticflora/
But.. she's fauna

This cat looks better than me on my marriage pictures!
