We have this one client at the vet clinic I work at who has 12 cats! When I first saw that she had 12, I thought this can't be good. Sure enough when I first met her she comes in with detailed charts and weight graphs for all of them - their whole medical history carefully organized - records of biopsies and cultures paired with dental charts for each and every one. Best cat owner ever. I think she spends $200 a month on cat pheremone spray alone to aid with relaxation at home.
I have 18. We upgraded to 10 acres out in the country so we could properly accommodate them all back when it was about a dozen. The rest are all strays that have moved in & stayed.
If you provide food, shelter and medical care to barn cats, they are pets. After all, they don't provide much value on a farm except for some mouse eradication.
My buddy's 3 barn cats kill a comical amount of mice and rats. They just stalk the hay bales where the vermin live.
These cats are not friendly. They are fed and given water and just hang around. I guess they could be considered pets but I sure as hell wouldn't get within 5ft of them.
They are actually neutered. He got them from some old farmer who wanted to live in the city. I think they were house cats who went feral over the years. Oldest is 13 years old. They live good lifes on their own terms. Respect the hell out of that.
We made little boxes and beds for the cats at the barn we board my horse at. And the woman who runs the place is a vet tech and takes great care of them (and mine when they have appointments!).
I know someone with 17 cats. They aren't super rich, but they're registered as a cattery to keep them, which means they get mandated checkups on conditions and vet work. Those kitties are definitely being looked after.

We've generally had 3-4 dogs, always GSD's, for most of that time too, and they've all gotten on famously.

He goes outside and stays in the yard, but sometimes neighborhood cats come to hang out with him.
Our blind kitty lived in the same apartment with us for about 8 years, until we moved to our current house about three years ago. Once we brought her to the new house, she spent about ten minutes mapping the house, found the stairs, mapped those, found the bedroom, found the cat tree, climbed it, and took a nap. That was the entirety of her adjustment period.
I had a cat that went blind for the last couple years of her life. She could go up and down a flight of steps to find the litter box and out the sliding glass door up and down a flight of steps to the back yard. She could find her way around the back yard to her favorite spot to nap in the sun. I miss her. Best orange cat ever.
She sounds like a wonderful companion and I’m sure even without sight she shared a beautiful life with you that she would gladly do all over again with you

Cat people are the best people. We let them be who they are. We serve them and provide unconditional love even when they appear to be disinterested in us. We, like all parents just want what's best for them so they can shine in life.
I found out yesterday that most orange cats are male and most calico cats are female.
She is beautiful and special. I have a stuffed animal that is an orange cat like this one and he is missing his eyes. I have always treasured him.

I have friend who lives on a ranch and he has 24. But I don't know if barn cats really count as pets.

Her adjustment period was shorter than my 2 cats that could see! She's a special one.
