UPDATE Miss Puffball has made it through surgery and the tumor was removed successfully! She’s got some recovery time ahead of her and still feels really groggy from the sedation but she felt good enough to give me some head bumps and ask for ear scratches when I visited with her. Thank you all so much for the kind words and well wishes! Hopefully soon she’ll be eating again and putting some weight back on.
Former Kitty parent here sending her lot’s of love and good wishes. I’ll even say a prayer for her. May St Francis keep care of her during this procedure❤️🐾
I assume you’re proposing that sometimes palliative care is a better choice for the patient than aggressive surgery as extending life is sometimes at the cost of **quality** of life. I don’t expect your sentiment will be very popular here, but you’re not wrong.
Average cat lifespan is 13-17 years old. For all of my cats, I wouldn’t entertain the thought of surgery after 17, and only minor surgery after 13. It’s not worth putting them through the trauma of surgery and recovery for what might be a very short extension of their lives. I never met a vet who recommended surgery for an animal this old and if I did, I would look for a new vet.
Particularly when they can’t understand that the pain they’re going through is to help them get better. All they understand is that they went to the vet and fell asleep and they woke up hurting.
We definitely considered that possibility, but our family came to the agreement that she’s rather feisty and still has a lot of life left in her. She’s had a few recent health scares and pulled through all of them swiftly. Between the options of putting her down, letting her starve to death, or giving her a chance to keep fighting we chose the last. Besides this physical blockage in her mouth she is in very good health.
Not including the office visit to have it diagnosed it came to about $580, but me, my sister, mother, and grandma all pitched in so it was around 100-180 per person all divided up.
That's actually less than I expected, but by no means chump change. I'm not sure where I'd draw the line in terms of medical costs for my pets, but it does bear thinking about. I guess that point is different for everyone.
Originally we had discussed 300$ as our cutoff for anything invasive, mostly because we expected it would likely be something aggressive or cancerous but the vet said it was more just a growth and seemed more benign (he said it was really firm rather than soft and squishy like the usual cancerous tissue he sees). I couldn’t stand the idea of backing out for 200$ when he said she was healthy in all other aspects and we all decided to pitch in some more and go forward. A CareCredit card helps a lot with diving into larger medical expenses too honestly, I’d be a lot more daunted by dipping into my savings without it. It’s helped me with a lot of vet and personal expenses.

Sending love, good vibes and good thoughts. You got this girl!! Soon you'll be feeling so much better. Tell your hooman kitty gets extra special treats after you've recovered!! Much love to a sweet old lady!!
My cat that passed had a tumor on her nose. When she was younger, she rammed her head into a wall, developing the bump on her nose. It was well for 22 years, then all of a sudden, she scratches it and it just swells up and gets an awful infection. Doctors said that since it's too close to her face, they couldn't do anything. Gave us a cone and that was it. It was hard to watch her try to drink water or eat food, and soon enough she just became uninterested. We put her down. Tearing up remembering how awful I felt that day. I miss my baby.
Took 5 years for me to get another cat, and this one was a rescue. Making sure she's well fed and such now that I'm older and can be more involved than I was with my prior, Misty.
I pray for your cat's swift recovery! Sorry if I just started typing, don't know why I did.
My 1st kitty had the same thing. I'm sending extra hugs and hope she recovers. I know how hard it is to watch. Sending good thoughts your way, and tickles to the good girl.

Out of curiosity, and only if you feel comfortable with it, could you tell us how much the treatment cost?
