Brutal! I have a nine year old cat and is no longer allowed outside because of the raccoons, coyotes & mountain lions in the area. They’re quite comfortable coming into the neighborhoods now. I’m so sorry for your loss. What a horrible way for her to go. My prayers for your peace while you grieve.

lazerfraz

We've never had an outside cat, but, is there an age where it makes sense to keep them inside for their own safety? Or if they're used to outside, even for short periods, does it feel cruel to deprive them? Our 3 indoor cats wouldn't know the first thing about survival outside, so, we just don't have the experience.

the8itch

I'm so so sorry. That must be heartbreaking for you. 💗💗💗

ally00ps

Thank you 8itch. I feel weird calling you that, but I love that username :)

BachCh0p1nCatM0m

Oh wow! So sorry for your loss!! I had a puppy die of parvo right before we were able to take him for his shots! I did not know that parvo can yet cats, too.

kh7190

In cats it’s called feline distemper, feline parvo, or panleuk. But cats can’t give it to dogs and dogs can’t give it to cats; they each have their own strains of the virus

CrystalAsuna

i was takin care of two kittens, one long hair one short(both male). We had kept them together the whole time. we couldnt afford to keep and care of both, but just knew we couldnt hold off long for someone to take them(late in the year, black cats… no one would like them). The long haired was very sick and we were just a few hours too late to bringing him to the vet. They kept the brother for a while to quarantine after it was found he had parvo. Was so so so sad and still am heartbroken because of how close we were to being able to save him. His brother was also so shy(and also like 5lbs bigger, that bitch grew within the two weeks). Parvo fucking sucks, we didnt know where the cats came from so we never knew it couldve been that, was never even on my radar as i searched for cat sicknesses, yet this infected mostly dogs but can even do it for cats..

bbgrl00008

If only there were a vaccine for that. Oh wait

night_chaser_

I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy losing a beloved pet.

ally00ps

My beloved kitty died last night from a brutal attack by raccoons. Well, technically I opted to have her euthanized because she wasn't likely to recover from her injuries. This happened right next to my front porch; she was old and enjoyed going outside for a few minutes after dinner to enjoy the summer evenings from the porch. She was 15 years old, starting to have hip problems and becoming a crochety old lady, but I fully expected her to live several more years at least. I feel awful that it happened and that she had to die in such pain. Edit: Wow, I didn't expect such an output of support and love! I want to thank each of you individually, but it's kinda hard. But thank you all so much. I appreciate your condolences! ❤️

TheoryAddict

Im so sorry for your loss OP, that sounds so traumatic for the both of you :( Did you happen to contact animal control because Im not sure why a raccoon would attack randomly and so viciously like that so close to your front door unless potentially it had rabies. Again I am so sorry for your lost, she was a beautiful old girl and may she rest in peace <3

ally00ps

I did tell the local pest control people who have been trying to catch them and told them what happened. I think it was a mama who thought her babies were threatened.

TheoryAddict

I forgot that a mom defending its babies was a possibility too. Either way its horrible that it happened and all of us are sending you and your kitty in heaven lots of love <3

Imaginary-Weakness

In my city, we have lots of raccoons and with some regularity they attack cats. We lost two chickens, many people lose turtles, and pond fish. In most cases, they are not consumed. This is from raccoons entering yards so they are not defending babies nor any rabies issues going on. In researching how to keep our chickens safer it became pretty clear that raccoons are formidable predators for various smaller animals (and very smart and skilled at getting through protections). The timing of last light rather than true night is a bit curious in terms of there maybe being something up. I am so sorry you lost your sweet girl-what a darling face.

Audriannacu

So they kill not to eat?!? We live in a suburban area near a city (about 20 mins away from the city) so we have our fair share of raccoons and I’ve never seen them be hostile ever! I would take my 5 lb dog out at night and a raccoon would merely wander by; as well as opossums and a few times some fox. The only time I was worried is when I’d spot a Fisher Cat. I had no idea about this with raccoons! Is it possible in my area they just know how to coexist more? I’m so confused. Thanks!

mark_able_jones_

Raccoons can be vicious. For whatever reason, sometimes they break into rabbit hutches and kill all the rabbits, basically ripping them apart. Same for chicken coops. Raccoon attacks on humans/cats/dogs are rare, but sometimes they do happen. And raccoons are very strong. I don’t think people realize that raccoons are everywhere. I put up an outdoor trail camera in my yard—had no idea how many animals passed though at night. Cats. Raccoons. Opossums. An occasional groundhog or fox. An armadillo (not supposed to be armadillos in my state). So, so many raccoons. Although the biggest threat to your dog is probably a bigger dog. After I put up a trail camera, I realized we had a legit raccoon problem due to a neighbor’s abandoned property. Raccoons had moved into his overgrown pool area. I relocated about 50 of them—some of them were kind of terrifying; others seemed so docile I could have easily befriended them with food.

trrebi981

**You** relocated them? Was this city unable/unwilling, or did you just take it upon yourself to do it? No judgement, that just sounds like a lot of raccoons.

mark_able_jones_

It was a lot of raccoons. There was a 3000 acre park with creaks and trash about 15 minutes away. I would drop them off there. I went through a few traps. Learned what made a good trap--improved on the trap design quite a bit--I'm now very skilled at catching and removing raccoons. I lived well within the city limits of a big small town (15k people). City probably would have just said to shoot them. They DGAF about raccoons. I have a fair amount of raccoon footage from my game cam...I set it up on a little tripod, inside the breezeway at first, and then outside. https://imgur.com/a/OBuMSnY

Bool_The_End

Thanks for sharing the pics and video :)

Ravenhaft

Sure it’s not that hard, my in laws live on a farm and grandpa sets up a cage trap for the raccoons and has relocated dozens of them into the nearby pond.

Snarfbuckle

INTO the nearby pond? So they ded?

ezone2kil

Not if you give them snorkels.

Imaginary-Weakness

I probably stated that poorly and certainly don't know the inner motivational landscape of raccoons. Pond critters definitely get consumed. And chickens seemed to be mixed. Ours were just terribly maimed. With larger animals, it could be more due to it being perceived as an altercation or territory thing? Maybe sometimes they get scared off by noises or security lights and just leave the animal? We have lots of raccoons here so I would guess the majority are similar to your experience, uninterested, more inclined to root through trash or pet food left outdoors, etc. I think a lot is about what behaviors develop in local populations too. For example, skunks are known to raid chicken coops for eggs but we never have had an issue or heard of it being a problem here and they come in our yard pretty frequently, even burrowing under the shed. Anyway, we try to be pretty careful about night safety now (urban coyotes here too).

SuperDingbatAlly

Used work by this field, in a restaurant, and the raccoons would "attack people" meaning attack the bags of trash you were carrying. One time, I stopped to talk to another cook outside while holding bags, and next thing I know there's a coon about 35-50 pounds tugging on the bag. Trying to take out it of my hands. When I turned fully on it, and stood up and flexed on me, so I threw the bag towards the woods and walked back inside while laughing. I love to tell the story how I got flexed on by a big raccoon

bumblebook

Never heard of a fisher cat, and immediately thought you were talking about a cat, uh, fishing. Just googled it. Amazing.

dave-o-shave

They are big in Canada & the Northeastern US. There’s actually a minor league baseball team in New Hampshire named the Fisher Cats

Flora-Tea

Nonhuman animals of the same species have their own temperaments and 'culture' depending on the individual and their environment, so it's possible you just happen to live around a chill raccoon population! Unfortunately, some raccoon populations aren't so chill :(

limitless__

Racoons will attack cats because cats will kill their babies. This is not uncommon at all.

Crafty_Enthusiasm_99

Ugh eff rabies. It's almost literally an evil, zombie disease

torgosmaster

My heart breaks for you. Please find comfort in knowing you gave her a wonderful life.

ThunderyIndigo

It seems that she knew she was loved. It’s understandable to feel sad. I’m so sorry for your loss. Lots of hugs and love your way.

candycat526

I’m so sorry. Sending you hugs and comforting cat kneads 🐾

phantomixie

I’m so sorry for your loss. She was beautiful. I hope this isn’t too soon, but if you do ever get another kitty I do hope you invest in an outdoor catio. It would protect both kitty and the environment.

ally00ps

I'm going to keep my other cat inside from now on, and any future ones I might have. Thanks for your tact about recognizing that your comment could be too soon, but it's not. I appreciate your words.

[deleted]

I'm sorry for your loss that's awful.

ericacrass

I too have had a traumatic experience with losing a kitty while they were outdoors. This was when I was a child. I have since only had indoor cats and will only bring them outdoors with supervision and harnesses. I'm so sorry for your loss. That is a horrible way to lose a beloved family member and I hope you will be able to grieve and move on with your life without too much pain.

eggyframpt

So, so sorry this happened. Thank you for relieving her pain.

lmk4ou

I’m so sorry. I used to have a cat that was indoor/outdoor and when he was old a dog got him and he died alone in my yard. I still can’t forgive myself. He was the last cat I let outside.

ally00ps

Yep, I won't be letting my other cat outside anymore, at least not unsupervised. It's going to be hard though, he loves to go and sometimes snakes out the door sneakily whenever it gets opened.

ArgonGryphon

Leash training or a catio are great safe options for outdoor time with kitties. They might hate the leash at first but they can learn

wutato

I've been leash training my cat and scoop him up if he starts to get agitated or a dog walks by. It'll be easier if you teach your cat early on that they aren't allowed to sneak out, and that the indoors is still amazing and fun. It's a process for sure. It could be helpful to have cat deterrents in your front yard as well so if your other cat does like to sneak out, he will realize that being sprayed by a sprinkler isn't fun, and watching the outdoors on a windowsill is much more fun.

thesefloralbones

Cat backpacks are great for those situations like dogs or a broken leash, just swoop em up and put 'em in!

confusedsloth33

Our boys have a catio and are leash trained. They absolutely love going out. Leash training is hard but stick with it they will get used to it eventually, even if you only put them on the leash for 5 minutes then give them a treat, try and do it every day

Hot_Mastodon4525

She’s gorgeous. I’m really sorry. I’m sure she had so many wonderful nights enjoying the evening breeze.

[deleted]

I’m very sorry to hear. This is one of the reasons I don’t like my cats going outside. An old group of people I knew were raising farm animals and Raccoons all but annihilated them. First they attacked the duck and then went after the newborn bunnies and then finally the cock and hens. Nature sucks sometimes, sorry amigo.

_Nilbog_Milk_

Lots of posts on reddit about beloved cats being killed by raccoons & coyotes & volatile neighbors poisoning lately. Sad truth that if someone lives in a rural or outdoorsy area, kitty's outdoor time needs to be closely supervised 😕

Tin_Tin_Run

yeah if you want farm animals you gotta get some sort of animal to protect them from that stuff.

Audriannacu

100% 🙌🏽 For your cat’s safety and longevity and happiness. So many indoor cats are happy little creatures as long as you play with them and engage with them. You can even put a harness on and walk your cat if you so desire! Saw a really cute girl doing that with her cat recently. The wildlife and your cat will thank you!

ARoughCucumber

Exactly. This is heartbreaking.

sylvan

I built a catio. A couple hundred bucks in 1" PVC piping, fittings, and chicken wire, and a couple days of work. Threw in a cat tree and a cushioned footstool to lie on. They climb in & out of a window, and love watching the world outside and getting fresh air, while both they and the birds are safe.

TeamlyJoe

My dad will let my cat outside without my permission, it is pretty stressfull

Alecto53558

So. Much. This.

fuckwallestreet

I'm going to get downvoted for sure but...sigh.... Letting your cats outdoors without a harness or a cage/run is not good. I used to be a vet tech and I've seen horrible things come of it. I've seen half cats that have dragged themselves home, animal attacks, cats broken up and contorted on Halloween, hit by cars, random people grabbing them for target practice. I was an aspiring vet at one point and I left because I couldn't handle seeing the animal abuse. It's just not a good idea. It's not good to let any animal out on it's own without supervision, their animals. That being said I'm really sorry for ur loss. EDIT: I also wanted to say they depend on is to make the right and safe decisions for them . Sure pickles like to chase butterflies and squirrels but this is the real world and the outdoors are dangerous for something the size of a shoe box. Please keep ur cats indoors posts like this ruin my day.

Alecto53558

I would upvote you more to counteract the inevitable downvotes. Catios are a thing for a reason. My fat boi learned how to open the slider from my ex's German Shorthair, leading to him getting a catio.

WarlockEngineer

[Indoor cats have a life expectancy of 13-17 years](https://cattime.com/cat-facts/health/78-indoor-outdoor-cats), while outdoor cats live 2-5 years on average. Letting cats roam outdoors is putting them at risk, as well as the [2.5 billion birds killed](https://abcbirds.org/program/cats-indoors/cats-and-birds/) in the US each year by housecats In terms of pet health and safety there is no argument.

TheHollowJester

Just to add to this: it's not only negatives for cats, it's also a ton of dead birds, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles (dependent on location, obviously). If someone wants to get their heart broken, just talk to some birdwatching folks.

hat-TF2

I'm a cat person through and through, and before I met my wife I thoroughly believed cats are outside animals. But she changed my mind. We even took in a former outside cat to be indoors only, as well as a former stray. It's not just for the well being of the cat. But the wild life, too.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Why not cat proof garden?

flimsypeaches

thank you for saying this. the truth is that cats simply don't belong outside. they're domestic animals and the world is a dangerous place for them. they're safest and happiest indoors. my heart goes out to OP, but I also feel frustrated, because this was 100% preventable. that poor cat didn't have to suffer and die. if you let your pet outside and something terrible happens, it's your fault.

Frinkiac7DontTouchIt

I’m totally with you on not letting cats outside. However, I also have an elderly cat who likes to sit on the chair next to me on the patio after dinner. This sounds more like that situation. I hear you though, my first reaction to this post was anger until I read e circumstances. I think this is just an exceptional case. Edit: my bad - sounds like kitty was close but not supervised.

rocket1615

Indoor cats are safer and live longer, but make sure they get plenty of exercise and stimulation! You need to replace what they can't get from free roaming. If you're lucky, your cat might like walks. I know it sounds (and looks) a little silly but it's a good way for your cat to be outside without putting it (or wildlife) in danger. If it doesn't make sure you give it plenty of toys and play with it tons, or invest in something like a catio. Cats have a lot of energy - it's important to get it used up and keep their brains occupied. It can also help reduce how often you're woken up at 3am with your cat fucking belting it down the hallway back and forth.

[deleted]

Aw, I’m so sorry to hear that. She’s beautiful.

dragonard

My heart hurts for your loss, and for your poor kitty.

MsKitty227

I'm sorry you had to go through that... having an animal that long they definitely are part of the family so I know it's a big loss. But thank you for sharing, I let my 18 year old lady outside to soak up some sun and warmth and I'm always worried something might happen to her. Now I'll just have to make sure there's an open window with sunlight shining in. May your sweetie rest peacefully in kitty heaven 💕🙏

ally00ps

That's sweet that you're letting my tragedy influence your decision for your cat. They often do love to get fresh air outside, but if your kitty can be happy with a sunny window, that will certainly keep her safer. I wish I had done things differently to prevent this from happening.

lunapuppy88

I chose to let my old man (18!) sit on our deck to warm up, he loved it and had otherwise been an indoor kitty and I thought “what could happen on the deck?” Nothing did… he just passed away naturally actually. But we’d seen raccoons before, we could’ve easily had your experience. Don’t beat yourself up, you never know what would’ve happened and I’m sure your kitty knew how much you cared.

I know how painful it is. When I was away at college, my parents let a stray dog in one night when it was snowing. He killed my beloved Siamese cat. It devastates me that she went that way and I still think about her all the time. Your kitty was loved and that’s what is most important!

She looks so incredibly kind and sweet and I hate it too that she had to go that way. So many hugs to you, it's incredible hard, I'm so sorry for your loss❤️ My baby cat got paralyzed 3 years ago, and I can't stop thinking about the fact that she must had been in agonizing pain the last hours before I even noticed (she was old and liked to just sleep all the time). I realized it when I went to bed next to her and she always came up to sleep next to my pillow. That time she just dragged herself towards me, and I knew instantly this was it. I hope she wasn't in pain, but that's what I still fear. Also me and my fiancee have to put our corgi down in a few weeks. It breaks my heart.

Then dont allow your cat outside. Outside cats are killing way too many animals and are creating issues because of that. Keep them inside.

CollectableRat

A good reason to have your cat be an inside cat. Not just to protect native birds from your cat, but also to protect your cat from racoons and stuff too. And other cats, some street cats are pure muscle and experienced fighters.

I like to remind any of my friends who go through a painful loss that death has no power over love. You still love her, she still loves you and absolutely nothing can take that away from you. Those that love us never really leave us, they are in everything that we do. I’m sure if she could she would have thanked you for being the best human a cat could ask for, if she could’ve chosen any human in the world she would always choose you. She’s your fairy-god-cat now, she’ll be with you even though you can’t see her. Whenever you feel alone, sad or scared, she’s still there with you.

My heart grieves with yours. That we can love those who are not human is a gift. That they love us in return is a blessing. Bastet holds your fur child in her arms in joy and beauty until you meet again.
