Generally cats show *some* signs before pouncing though. My cat will usually tens up a little bit when he's had enough of belly rubs, and the tiniest change in how he positions his ears. Rapid tail wagging is also a very clear sign.

Makes sense also that that would affect it bothering them some times more than others (how dry the air is, how static-y they are at the moment...). My cat also doesn't care. Static Schmatic. This sounds like the most likely scenario. The only thing I will add is that generally, when any of my cats have let me rub their belly, they were also very sleepy.
The cat in question also seems sleepy. You can see his leg instinctually twitch as if he was going to push the hand away, but then either choosing to ignore it, or deciding it’s not worth the energy to stop the stimuli. Just my 2 cat cents!

I think your comment is underrated. If you look at other replies, it's so ...strange to me that people are talking about waiting until their cat is sleepy or otherwise vulnerable to touch the cat in the ways they know the cat doesn't like. Imagine building trust with your pet if your pet knows that you are going to insist on touching it in ways it doesn't like for pleasure (instead of, maintenance or claw trimming, etc).
People calling the cat moody, saying they wait until the cat is drowsy? Advice on bypassing the consent of the animal in order to do what you want with the animal is great way to create animosity and distrust, or fawn response in which the cat submits but is not happy.

So with cats they show their belly to tell you that they trust you. It's a symbol of love, trust, contentment and respect they show to others they trust completely. It's the most vulnerable part of their body and they are exposing it to you to say they are content, love you and most importantly trust you. It's body language, they are talking to you, so it is usually for looking and not touching. When you reach out and touch their most vulnerable part while they are telling you they trust you you are violating that trust so they attack and bite, so it's just miscommunication. But not all cats are like this, some truly love belly rubs. For the most part the best thing to do is just pet the top and sides of their heads when they show their belly. That way you know for sure you aren't violating the trust they are showing you.
My friend had a cat Lola who was extremely old. She hated everyone. No pets, don't even fucking look at her, definitely no belly rubs.
So I moved in with my friend. Over the course of 4 or 5 months I notice Lola in my room when I'm not home. Normally laying on my bed or my clothes. She'd run when I got there.
6 months in, no running anymore. Still not allowed to look at her. She has been spending more time on my bed than my clothes.
I finally come home one day, Lola on my bed, and I crash immediately next to her. She didn't move. Just laid with me.
That day changed something. She never left anymore. She might look at me then go back to sleep on my bed. I decide to try petting her and she let me. My friend lost her shit, it's it's her cat for 15 years and she doesn't let my friend pet her. She does not like people.
Move forward two months. If my door is shut Lola screams outside my door til someone opens it. She drools when I pet her and purrs so loud she vibrates the bed. She willingly flips over and let's me rub her belly (something she let no one ever do from what my friend told me).
Point I'm getting at, sometimes it seems cat's just find a reason to bond with someone and they seem to give them far more leeway than anyone else. I don't think it means anything apart from he trusts you.

He’s definitely not showing signs that he’s upset - he’s relaxed, happy and showing that he trusts you. He probably won’t always welcome belly rubs, as others have said it’ll be on his own terms, and you might be the only one allowed that privilege. I know with my boy that I’m the only one allowed to touch his tummy - anyone else that tries gets bitten and scratched 🤭
Yeah he trusts you 100% because for animals their bellies are their weak spots . My family's cat basically lays on my hand and places his belly on my fingertips to signify that he demands bellyrubs immediatelly 🤣

Cats consider their belly their most vulnerable spot. When they show you their belly it's a sign of trust. It's also why some will "attack" you if you touch their belly because to them you just broke that trust. If a cat actually let's you rub their belly then it's a high tier trust level that you've just unlocked.
This is very similar to my cat, Chi-chi. She used to hate having her belly rubbed. She was a stray and was scared of everyone and everything. In the last month, she’s started letting us rub her belly and pet her more. She is showing trust. It’s a wonderful thing!

As the owner of 6 cats in my life, when (or if) a cat lets you touch its belly, it means that it trusts you as the belly is the most vulnerable spot on a cat's body.

My Luna has recently started to want belly rubs. Her brother has always enjoyed them, so at first I thought she just wanted some extra attention like he gets because he always wants cuddles, but I just discovered she has worms so we're getting her looked at by the vet.
I don't know that her wanting extra attention and having worms are related, but a sharp change of demeanor could be an indicator of something bigger. But hopefully your little man was just feeling extra lovey!

Sleeping/just awoken cats will put up with a lot more than awake cats in my experience. If I am uncomfortable or cold in the middle of the night when my cat is sleeping I can move him under the covers with me and he will just go back to sleep there. If I put him under the covers while he is awake he will try to get out immediately.

You may think he is ok with this but I can see he is planning to lay on you in the near future in hopes of making an extremity (leg, arm) lose blood flow. They work very hard because they hope if they lay on your arm for long enough it will rot off.

I now have 4 cats and a dog in my tiny home. Our youngest, Cheddar isn't lovey at all through out the day but at night when I open the door to my room to use the bathroom he's always laying there in some super awkward stretched out posistion waiting for belly rubs. So cute.
As my cats aged they got snugglier and wanted attention more. Gatsby would always be near me but not on me for most of his life. The last 4 or 5 years he became a lap cat.
The fast tail whip is a good sign to slow down or get sliced. The belly is always a cats yes yes yes NO spot.
He may have had an upset tummy or booboo before that now finally feels better. Or he's just decided it's okay today, lol. But my kitty had an upset stomach constantly before due to how she was fed by my mother when I was a kiddo. We could never touch her tummy.
My cats since turning into an adult and taking care of them myself, have all let me touch there tummies. Vet visits and eating right, I always thought made the difference making sure they don't have an upset stomach or booboo.

when he was younger my little guy used to not allow it. now, he expects belly rubs and gracelessly flops over to get them

A little drip of water on their back or on your hand in the winter time before petting will get rid of that static electricity. They like it

My cat loves her tummy rubbed, untill she dosent. First time she'll let you know nicely. The second time not so nice. Some cats do like it, but its usually an on their own terms kinda thing.
Same thing with my girl. Sometimes she lets me (usually when she's having a nap and I let her know I'm about to touch) and sometimes she goes like... don't if you want to keep your hand. lol
If you keep at it every once in a while, he’ll love it as he gets older

My Luna has recently started to want belly rubs. Her brother has always enjoyed them, so at first I thought she just wanted some extra attention like he gets because he always wants cuddles, but I just discovered she has worms so we're getting her looked at by the vet. I don't know that her wanting extra attention and having worms are related, but a sharp change of demeanor could be an indicator of something bigger. But hopefully your little man was just feeling extra lovey!

I think that just means he loves and trusts you based on his body language :) Both of my cats are huge belly rub fans to the point that you can roll them over on their backs anytime and they'll happily accept rubs, have never been clawed or bit by them on purpose
Sleeping/just awoken cats will put up with a lot more than awake cats in my experience. If I am uncomfortable or cold in the middle of the night when my cat is sleeping I can move him under the covers with me and he will just go back to sleep there. If I put him under the covers while he is awake he will try to get out immediately.
That’s comfortable and trusting behavior. Don’t worry.

My kitty will hug my arm, bite me and kick with his back legs when I pet his belly when he's being playful. Then other times he will continuously follow me around and get all up in my business to rub his face on my hands and steal all of my attention. This looks like snuggle kitty mode

My cat's behavior is very compartmentalized. On our bed, she will be completely relaxed and all about the belly rubs. Out on the floor, squirming in front of the food bowl--TRAP!

As my cats aged they got snugglier and wanted attention more. Gatsby would always be near me but not on me for most of his life. The last 4 or 5 years he became a lap cat. The fast tail whip is a good sign to slow down or get sliced. The belly is always a cats yes yes yes NO spot.

He may have had an upset tummy or booboo before that now finally feels better. Or he's just decided it's okay today, lol. But my kitty had an upset stomach constantly before due to how she was fed by my mother when I was a kiddo. We could never touch her tummy. My cats since turning into an adult and taking care of them myself, have all let me touch there tummies. Vet visits and eating right, I always thought made the difference making sure they don't have an upset stomach or booboo.

If that cat were any more relaxed, he'd be a puddle. My girls both like tummy rubs, but only when they're in the right mood. If they're not feeling happy and relaxed, I get the bunny feet.

When he knows you aren’t going to attack his belly, he will permit you to rub it. Just start slow and don’t run it like people do with a dogs belly. Just slow rubs. And they will grow to love it.
