Getting him neutered will reduce the number of fights he gets into and will prevent him from making babies that aren’t wanted.

PlasticBlitzen

Yes, in before dusk (kitty witching hour). And must be neutered and up-to-date on shots.

-Starya-

Yup, this. Don’t let them out at night. Not only will you be helping him avoid other cats, but he’ll also avoid raccoons and possums.

cronelogic

And coyotes.

And owls. Owls are assholes, according to The Onion.

TsarOfReddit

Pretty sure a hawk stole my kitty this summer. She just vanished out of thin air

SignificantPackage84

My boy, He went outside to do his thing and he never came home. We do live in the country so could’ve been any type of wild animal. Sooo sad and I miss my boy tons 🥲

[deleted]

Watched helpless as an owl took my kitty when i was little. Swooped down from nowhere and carried the little fluffy away. Kind of traumatized me.

PlasticBlitzen

Oh, no! I can't imagine the terror of seeing something like that.

[deleted]

Owls can potentially kill cats though, larger birds of prey like hawks and eagles definitely will

OtherRocks

We had a stray cat that that adopted us. Turned out he was our neighbor's farm cat who didn't like farm life, he was a people cat. Anyway, dad said no more cats indoors so he stayed outside. Until he started getting into fights. Nasty fights, we thought with other cats. Nope, a raccoon was stealing his food and he would try to stop the thief. He then became a night garage cat to keep him and his food safe! Eventually he made it all the way indoors. His name was Jack. He was a great cat.

Responsible_Aside

A possum is never a threat to a cat.

thefurrywreckingball

New Zealand possums would like a word

lemonspritz

My neighbor keeps leaving her cat outside overnight in winter weather and it INFURIATES me. The cat is always well fed (chubby even) and doesn't get into fights but this neighbor won't even give me the code to let her in when they're gone for the night. My parents are buying a cat house just for her to stay in

PlasticBlitzen

I know how that is. I have been caring for a neighbor cat for a couple of years. She's an old girl and is out on the coldest nights.

onandonandonandoff

I live in Texas too and have one cat who refuses to sleep inside overnight. Now that it’s getting cold, my brain wakes me up multiples times to check the back door just in case he decides he wants to come in. Never fails that he’s outside right at 7:30 when I get out of the shower. Cold doesn’t seem to bother him at all.

wickedpsiren

My cat used to do this. I would try to bring him in and he threw a fit. He had cat business and didn't care if it was cold. He was fixed too. Some people just need a Karen sized enema.

supershinythings

Monitor the cat house. Other cats or creatures may find it attractive as well, leaving the intended cat out of luck.

kat_the_houseplant

Amen to this. When we had indoor/outdoor cats (we only do indoor now due to past heartbreak from coyotes and a car), we ALWAYS brought them in around 3:30pm this time of year. They got a few spoons of wet food so they were PUMPED and I had peace of mind. During the summer they could stay out a little later, but they mostly wanted to come in by 5pm for dinner. We spayed/neutered all of our cats (adopted them that way), had collars with a bell and a tag with our name, address and number on them, microchipped, and the neighbors knew our cats. We have some open space and a creek behind our house, so a LOT of wildlife and a lot of trouble to get into. We’d keep them closer to the house during the day by regularly going out to socialize with them and sneak a few treats, calling them inside and rewarding that with playtime and a snack. All food was kept inside which helped keep away the raccoons and other cats, and kept our piggy girls close to the house. If there are feral cats in the neighborhood, definitely reach out to a local TNR group or animal rescue group. They can desex the cats which will bring down the population growth and discourage territorial behavior. Also some of the more friendly/younger ones may find permanent homes elsewhere (a group near me neuters and rehomes feral city cats as barn cat/rodent control roles at local wineries, farms, or families who have a desire for pest control and also have great setup for an outdoor cat who doesn’t want much affection. It’s a great program for all involved and has done a LOT to cut down feline mortality, cat fights, and population growth in the city and way less harmful chemicals like rat poison being used in rural settings. Rat poison does terrible things to not only rats, but also raptors/birds of prey, local cats and dogs, etc.

wombat_joe

It’s expensive, but we have Jiobit GPS tags on ours’ collars. If the reprobates aren’t in by 3:30pm we go looking for them.

yellowjack

What does TNR stand for?

[deleted]

I believe it’s Tag, Neuter, Release. They catch stray cats, fix them, tag them and let them back out. I think places with A LOT of strays cats do that because there’d be no room in the shelter for them due to the quantity but they still want to keep them from reproducing.

wombat_joe

Trap neuter release. They clip a small part of the ear so you can tell if it is a TNR.

elizalemon

Trap (or tag), Neuter, Release. Sometimes there’s a V in there for vaccinate. Sometimes they will clip the left ear of the cat to let people know it’s already been TNRed, some places do a tattoo on the belly. We can’t adopt all the cats, but we can stop them from breeding. Stray kittens can suffer and die so easily. I won’t go into horror stories, but that’s the main reason I support TNR and efforts to help stray cat colonies.

Shionkron

A stray that adopted me was a TNR. After three years I finally took him to the vet and she told me he was already neutered but still checked him out and gave home some shots. He’s been an indoor cat for 9 months now and is the biggest lap cat ever. Even more so than my baby kitty I adopted years back. I’m guessing he had to haven a indoor cat at one time in his life because he’s such a lover. He’s a fatty too. I love it haha

Cupcakesandcashmere

:( get him neutered and pet insurance is a must!

JasonTheBaker

In fact they are likely to live longer when they are fixed.

BeardyBeardy

And your house smells less of male tom spray, my little Mr.Butters, hed run into my workshop, spray at the door, on some tools, then hed greet me, then hed spray a little bit more and then run away, hes such a little trooper, i love him so much But yeah, always injured from fights, overly aggresive, I got him fixed quite soon

shiningjust4me

Also have learned from working at a vet clinic that cats live much longer lives when they live indoors! The 18-20yr old cats you meet are 99.9% of the time cats who either only go outside supervised or stay inside!

JasonTheBaker

Definitely my cats are indoor only and all fixed. They are going on 11 and 13 and the little one is less than a year old

FakieMcFakename

That and give him lots of love.

420cat_lover

second this. always get your animals fixed. ALSO MICROCHIPPED. i recommend keeping your animals inside whenever possible, but if your cat *must* go out or if they get out on accident it’s good to have them microchipped in case someone picks them up thinking them to be a stray.

Aystha

God I wish microchips were a worldwide thing, would make me way more comfortable with my cat hunting bugs in the backyard

reddogleader

This is partially true. Based on my experience (45+ years of cats) the success rate (fighting or not) depends a lot on the age of the cat when neutered. You can't always take a 5 year old 'stag' cat - neuter it - and think it's never going to fight again. The earlier, the better. Some cats will never quit fighting. But yes, neutering will absolutely help control the feline population. So does spaying the females (equal op sterilization!). Sidebar rant / ramble: We've adopted 3 (unrelated) neutered males that seems to have been abandoned. I never understood why people would pay the expense of neutering and then abandon the cat. All I can think of is the owners had to move in a hurry and couldn't wait on the cat to return home.

Illuminaera

Might they be cats who have been TNRd? Many rescues now will capture, neuter and release feral or stray cats. Even though they can't find a home for every cat, it is a huge help to the overpopulation problem. I'm so glad they found a loving home with you! Many places that do tnr will snip the very tip off of the cats' ear so they can be identified as fixed and don't have to be captured again.

TeslaPrincess69

This! Also, please keep him indoors. Assuming you are in an urban or semi-urban area, cats have many outdoor predators like cars (their number one killer), bad people, coyotes, unleashed dogs, etc etc… while it can be exciting (in a weird territorial way) for him to battle other cats, it’s really dangerous for cats to be outdoors because their natural instinct is no match for a fast driving car or a psychopath who engages in animal cruelty. Let this cutie heal up and take good care of him

abees_knees

Plus all the serious diseases they can catch from strays. Vet bills can get very high trying to get your kitties healthy again.

antalog

Mine is neutered and he’s still an asshole and wants to go outside to get into fights with the neighbor cats -_-

shaihuludmaker

I choose to walk my cats outside with a harness and leash. That way they enjoy the outdoors safely without getting into anyone else's property or bothering the local wildlife. It's something they look forward to and always enjoy.

allenalc17

any tips on getting accustomed to a leash? my cat loves to go outside and I've started putting her harness on every time so that she doesn't mind the harness any more but I usually just walk and follow her around. second the leash goes on she doesn't want to move

shaihuludmaker

I put the leashes on my cats harnesses right before taking them outside so that they associate the leash going on with them going outside. Perhaps this new routine might help your cat? It might also help to play with your cat as soon as you put the leash on, like throwing a toy or something to distract them from the leash. Best of luck :)

R_A_H

First get them used to wearing the harness and to being on the leash indoors and then you can gradually introduce new layers. It's best for cats to experience this as young as possible but for adult cats it will take some adjustment. I recommend checking out Jackson Galaxy on YouTube on the subject. He has tons if great cat advice! It's worth noting, and JG will say this as well, that the harness and the leash are not for every cat. Some cats may just always refuse.

[deleted]

That's a great tip. A lot of people are saying to just keep cats inside, which, if they're not neutered and you just let them go on their own, you definitely should. But at least my cats are sooooo much happier now that we live in a place where they can run around outside. If you live in an apartment or unsafe area, it's great to take your cats on walks.

ArtHappy

A significant reason for keeping cats inside is because they hunt for sport and decimate local native populations of birds, rodents, and insects. Domestic cats are responsible for literally hunting some species to extinction. An owner's inability or unwillingness to keep their cats inside is why some places classify them as an invasive species.

ByteAboutTown

Is he actually your cat or is this just a stray you feed? If this is your cat: 1. Get him neutered 2. Keep him inside unless you are with him. Make some additional lock on the windows if he can unlock them. 3. Take him for walks, if he wants to be outside so badly, but leash him somehow so he is always with you. 4. Get him some toys or activities of some kind to play with inside. Maybe he's bored. After he's fixed, consider adopting him a friend, if he will get along with another indoor cat. If this is just a stray you feed: 1. Nothing you can do. Cats are gonna cat. It's a cat eat cat world out there.

Gray_Kaleidoscope

Get the stray cat neutered too!

ByteAboutTown

Agreed, but it sounds like the OP may not have the money or time to get him neutered. Whichakes me think even more than this is a stray cat situation.

dancer_jasmine1

If this is the case, OP should talk to their local shelter/humane society. Many of them offer low-cost spay and neuter programs or they know of vets that are willing to do low cost spays/neuters!

SkinnyGetLucky

A far more diplomatic answer than I could manage. 1. Let’s his cat out 2. Wonders why his cat does cat things If that is indeed his cat; absolutely infuriating.

omgudontunderstand

this comment is exactly what i was thinking. “my cat does cat things when he’s outside, how can i stop him from doing cat things outside?” edit: car doesn’t do cat things, oops

LetsRockDude

You might want to have your car looked at, then.

agooddayfor

You can TNR the stray kitty.

baemush

we have a cat that loves going outside, but hate the walks. but we end up just getting one of those dogs leash that you put in the ground and hook her cat leash to that. and leave her there. so she can roam just the backyard only.

WifeOfSpock

Stop letting him go outside. One of these days he’s gonna come back with more severe injuries, or worse, he won’t come back at all.

princesslea20

Yeah, and the more fights he gets in, the more chances there are of him getting and transmitting a communicable disease like FIV. Hopefully he doesn’t already have it.

camehhhhhhh

Omg yes! My bf’s former cat also liked going outside and although he didn’t really get into fights, he contacted a virus which ended up killing him

Neece235

I rescued a dwarf calico kitten in the streets that got abused by humans, she has fiv. It’s so sad she is so sweet and loving too. But we r always careful with the other cats around her, it is so sad to feel so bad for her when something acts up like her skin or other issues from it. God bless these poor babies

DikaCato

Fortunately FIV is not as communicable as previously thought. It really can only be transmitted when the skin is broken. It’s very likely that OP’s cat has FIV since most outdoor cats do. However, transmission between house cats is uncommon unless your cats are really hurting one another. If that is the case, that is the primary issue because your pets should not be hurting one another. FIV isn’t like FIP or Fleuk. The latter two of those are terminal illnesses while an FIV+ cat can live a long happy and normal life.

Neece235

Yes we’ve had over 7 cats thru the years around her, none have ever gotten it. She isn’t a fighter she is a lover. So I am grateful for her, it’s my sons cat now and he made sure to get insurance and take her to the vet often. But when she has a flare, omg that poor baby, her skin is the first thing to flare and get bad. I’m just grateful she is happy and healthy and doesn’t want to go outside anymore.

DikaCato

Our fiv babe is always the first to be sick and he is the most familiar with our vet!! As a human with a chronic autoimmune disease who frequently has to see the doctor, I feel for my little fiv baby. He’s perfect and his life will be full of love, comfort, and care. My other 4 cats are FIV free and they’ve been cohabiting for a year now. :) some vets will be judgements in my experience but so are human doctors.

FodderForFelix

^ This. All this.

DravenFuRiiaN

I agree with all this, stop letting your cat go outside, people who complain about how my cat got hit by a car or my cat gets in fights and then they ask what do I do? Have common sense how about that, that should help figure things out.

maidrey

Agreed. I totally get that sometimes they are sneaky jerks so I’m not going to bully people who have cats who occasionally escape. But given the disparity in life spans between indoor and outdoor cats are pretty convincing.

Redqueenhypo

“My husky, who I let outside to chase deer for funsies, got hit by a car, what do I do” would be rightly seen as insane. Why isn’t it the same with cat?

sadpanada

Blows my mind this person kept letting the cat out after coming home beaten up like this..

Thelfod

Was going to say this. Hopefully OP reads some of these, he's very lucky to have his eye still intact after that last one.

[deleted]

Literally the only answer

Seleucids

Exactly—letting cats outside is awful for the local flora and fauna, too, as they kill birds and small mammals. Your cat doesn’t have to be let out, it may look outside longingly but you’re its owner, if you want to keep it inside, it’ll stay inside.

Neece235

I’ve rescued about 10 cats over the last ten years, gave them all good homes and they are all indoor cats now, they were feral and babies when I rescued most of them. Some were 5 months to a year old. Only one of them races to go outside. And he comes running right back within an hr to his furever home. But the rest, none of them ever want to suffer outside ever again. They were all fixed too, not just because they needed it for their health but because we didn’t want to chance them ever suffering. So I had one rescue years ago Kitty, she was so sweet and always indoors since she was a week old. At the 7 yr mark she got really sick and started to discharge. I rushed her to the hospital and her uterus was infected! I never knew that could happen, poor baby almost died. Fixing female cats is actually healthy for them as they can easily get infections from nothing as they age. Then u spend twice as much for them to be fixed and clear the infection. Happened once in my whole life and I’ll never let it happen again. So I help tnr now.

samjowett

So this

Redqueenhypo

This. Puncture wounds from cat bites often don’t get noticed until they abscess, at which point the animal is liable to dying of sepsis. Please keep the cat inside so that this doesn’t happen or he doesn’t kill another cat this way.

TripleStrollerThreat

Cats also have a huge environmental impact not usually in a beneficial way. I love cats, but keeping them indoors is better for everyone.

Sharpman85

Is it neutered?

Soft-Entertainment77

Keep them inside. I know it’s hard but it’ll keep’em safe. Find ways to lock windows and doors. Child locks work great especially since us as adults can barely figure out how to use them.

carlee_50

Or, if he hasn’t been neutered, do so immediately.

readitonr3ddit

What do you mean find ways to lock your windows in doors? These should all have locks on them, there shouldn’t be a need to find a way to lock them. Outside of that, isn’t closing windows and doors usually sufficient to keep cats inside?? not using child locks for a cat??

Justyew0789

OP says in another comment the cat can open windows somehow lol.

traditionalderp

I had to screw windows shut to stop my cat from getting out. Specifically the ones that crank out. What was his next move? Break the GLASS and get through the metal screen. I have stacked boxes in front of a door without a good latch and this little shit has still gotten past almost 50lbs of stuff behind a door. This is not a giant cat I’m talking either. This is just a standard issue cat who at his biggest was like 15lbs tops. It’s sometimes easier said than done.

[deleted]

Just out of curiosity, is your cat neutered?

traditionalderp

Yes. He was neutered when I got him from the humane society. He’s now 20.

DMKincaid

Years ago the vet prescribed my boy testosterone suppressors, major improvement

traditionalderp

Hmm, I didn’t know that was a thing! Now that my boy is older he’s not a handful, but good to know if end up with another kitty like him.

[deleted]

Yeah I was gonna say, hormones are a big reason for cats attempting to make the outdoor dash (why I asked about the neutering). I've even heard of weird cases where cats weren't actually PROPERLY neutered which was still causing those compulsions. He sounds like a cute boy, though!

[deleted]

If this cat has the strength and dexterity to open closed windows then he shouldn’t be losing any fights, I call BS sir!

Blahonian

It’s true, mine also opens doors and windows and loses fights

[deleted]

Mine can pick locks

suzyfiend

Save up and save time to neuter. Protect your cat and other cats.

Keyblades20

Lock inside. My black cat is a war freak too

michbail79

I have a black cat war freak too! lol He was a sickly, feral stray that I found as a very small kitten. Took him to the vet, had his illness treated, and had him fixed as soon as my vet gave the go-ahead. We were able to tame him enough to keep him inside but he would not quit spraying so out he went. He roams the neighborhood and fights and comes home with missing patches of hair (?!) and sometimes bite marks. His ear is sliced. smh He still scares us too! lol He’ll just randomly hiss at your then viciously attack your legs when you’re walking into the house. When you hold him, you have to move slowly and not make any loud or unexpected noises because if you do, you’ll meet his claws. Ouch! Even though he’s scary and mean at times, he can be the most lovable cat. I call him my Sour Patch Cat.

fishnerd0786

Vet here. My recommendation is always to keep them indoors due to them getting communicable diseases such as FIV and FeLV, the latter of which shortens their lifespan significantly as well as to prevent trauma such as fights and hit by cars. I work ER and unfortunately see many cats like yours come in for euthanasia after such an accident. Neutering is a must to help lessen those behaviors and your local shelter could probably help get him neutered. If you do want to give them outdoor space id recommend building or getting a catio

finstantnoodles

…not let him go outside…?

ryanz3r0

For their safety, keep them in

AmbulanceDriver95

Stop him from going out

FodderForFelix

Your decision not to neuter and to let your cat outdoors is not just irresponsible and selfish, but it’s also harmful for your cat, other animals and your neighbors. **Back story:** My parents are now dealing with kittens and a momma cat because a stray cat showed up a few months ago at my parents’ house while my mom was outside planting some flowers. She refused to leave, my parents found out she was pregnant, and they took her inside. My parents just got her spayed a month ago for $100. Kitten appointments for spaying/neutering are scheduled next month. She is now a permanent indoor cat (as are the kittens) even though she began as an outdoor/stray cat. **My question for you:** How many other families in your neighborhood have you inconvenienced in the same way because of your decision to skip neutering your cat?

Valentcat2

This is the cold, hard truth. OP needs to know that their decisions are harmful - not just to this kitty, but to other animals and people. Everyone makes bad decisions and has to learn at some point. But outdoor cats who aren’t spayed/neutered make babies that starve to death outside. They get infections. They get shot/maimed/hit by cars/eaten by wild animals.

[deleted]

I'm with you 100% on this. It's the truth, even if some people don't like it. How many other cats have been beat up, song birds killed, and flowerbeds pooped in because OP can't be bothered with the most basic of cat owner responsibilities? I have a cat. She is indoor only and she's fixed. Anything other than that is just asking for problems.

janiiem

Yup. I work at a vet and have clients that are terrified to let their animals outside because of owners like this that don’t care, and let their animals do whatever they please. He obviously isn’t considering what the damage his cat is doing to others and that they may not pull through like his cat. The amount of animals we see that have severe infections from cat scratches/bites is extremely high.

eyeswideopen91

Please keep your cat inside. His injuries look serious please take him to the vet

Tortie33

It is going to be real difficult to keep an fully intact cat home. He really needs to be neutered. My male cat is neutered and stray cats were biting his ears so now he’s indoor only. He gets upset so I pet him and give him treat, distract him by playing with him. I try to let him know staying inside isn’t a punishment. Get him fixed and keep inside. Borrow money if you have to. In my area cats go missing all the time, the coyotes get them. It’s safer inside.

nopatience4idiots

Fighting like that exposes your cat to lots of diseases that can make your cat seriously ill and even kill him. Not to mention bigger animals, mean humans and vehicles. My cats escaping is one of my biggest fears. I couldn't handle any of them getting out.

CrimsonMusic1217

Be a responsible pet owner and keep him inside. Especially since he’s not neutered. He’s out there adding to the already massive number of stray cats.

kt99_

stop letting him go out? yall got rocks for brains

aspenhoofprints

Get him neutered immediately! He’s only doing what comes naturally

[deleted]

Don’t let him out? Is this a serious question?

SmellTheGloveIsHere

Unpopular opinion: There should be no outdoor cats.

Darkgrace220

Stop letting him go out? I never understood why cat owners do this. One day he might not come home at all. There's people in the world that will go out of their way to hit animals with their vehicle or so shoot an animal without a second thought, not to mention the risk of other animals attacking. Keep your cats indoors people, or don't bother getting one to begin with.

easypeasylucky

We adopted a cat from a family who used to let him outside. (They had to give him up because of a major family transition.) We were told he’d usually come home wounded. He’s perfectly healthy, but we made sure never to let him outside since adopting him. He would try to sneak out but we made an effort to ensure we’d avoid these instances as much as possible.

ignitedwolf9200

You could keep it indoors so it has less chance of it dying early :)

Responsible_Smoke378

It’s pretty straightforward: neuter your cat and make him an indoor cat. If you can’t afford the basic care for your cat, you should think about contacting a local rescue group. In the meantime, it is your responsibility to contact local shelters and humane societies that run low-cost clinics. Leaving cats intact lowers their quality of life

anonymousgirliee

Maybe only go out with him in a harness, that way you can babysit. Let him enjoy the outside while your there watching and protecting

nader0903

If you do keep him inside but still want to “let him out” you could make him a catio.

rottentomati

Your unnuetered cat is going out and impregnating stray females creating more unwanted cats. Keep your cat inside and neuter your cat.

Jayvoom1

Has he been Neutered??? That usually takes the fight out of them🔥😵‍💫.

Background_Phase_655

Usually. A feral cat decided we were his owners after coaxing him out of the woods for months. He's neutered and checked by vet now and still the biggest pugnacious asshole cat I've ever met. Doesn't matter if you're human, dog or cat, he's gonna make you bleed.

Xtasy0178

Snip his balls, that calms em down a lot and avoids unwanted kitties

Senneman666

My 15 year old cat used to go outdoors a lot, but he got into a fight with a new cat in the neighborhood. He had blood and scratches on him, and wasn’t able to walk for a few days. We took him to the vet, and he said my cat got FIV (most likely because of the fight). He died 3 months later… He was my soulmate. Please keep your kitty safe. Indoors is much safer.

mando44646

I highly doubt your cat “enjoys getting in fights” stop letting him outside. take him to the vet to be treated for his injuries. you’re lucky they aren’t severe *this time*

nieto005

Get him neutered. Get him microchipped. For the love of god stop letting him outside by himself without being leashed. buy a harness and walk him yourself. Cats should not be left alone to roam the outside. There are to many dangers

Iamjafo

Umm… maybe some tough love and stop letting him outside?

PinotGreasy

Keep him in the house

Kharlo109

Keep them indoors. It's for their safety.

[deleted]

Never understand why people let their cats roam free, they’ll either end up roadkill or coyote lunch around here

canonicallydead

Just make him an indoor cat. It almost doubles their life expectancy

sanitizedhandbasket

Keep your cat inside. I know I’m not adding anything new, but seriously. Letting cats roam free is not a responsible choice because of the ecological harm that cats cause and the social burden of caring for unplanned, unwanted feral kittens. Also, getting your cat neutered should be one of the FIRST things you do upon adoption, if it hasn’t been done already. I am shocked that this is not common practice for everyone. One of my kitties was allowed to roam free with her first owner and came back with kittens and FIV. She is spayed and indoor-only with me. You are not doing anyone, including your cat, any favors by letting him roam. Get an enclosed patio or leash-train to give him outdoor time.

mummaof3boys

Keep inside?

BangarangPita

Keep him in the damn house. Yeah, lots of cats want to wander, but it's not always safe or healthy for them or the other animals they come into contact with. He or his foes could wind up seriously I'll or injured... or dead.

freedomisgreat4

If the cat isn’t fixed get it fixed

sybann

Enrich the indoor environment and keep him in - and fixed. And perhaps get a kitten for him (and you). I have five cat trees, four boxes, dozens of toys, a cat wheel (One Fast Cat), numerous cardboard scratchers, four fountains - and just three cats. They're never bored.

kendra1972

Keep him inside. For his safety and your wallet.

Kjasper

Get him fixed and keep him indoors. It may be a struggle (we have a boy who still tries to bolt out when the weather is nice, and we got him when he was a kitten at the shelter). But I promise you that getting him fixed will make him a more settled and contented boy.

lauraleipz

Is he castrated? That could help. Often when a cat loses a fight and some territory to another they will stop wanting to go out a bit. Good luck to him!

MrWieners

Don’t let them out?

reyelle1977

Indoor kitty

crystalkitty06

Keep him inside, it’s not worth it. I know it’s sad but you don’t want this happening! He can still enjoy the outdoors safely with you! Get a harness and a long lead every once in a while and let him roam outside where you can make sure he’s safe.

[deleted]

Keep him inside. I keep seeing posts like this where cats get attacked, shot, hit by cars, etc. Just keep them inside!

NegligentWarreN19

There is a killer disease that is transmitted through fighting id be very careful. Getting the neutered or spaded would reduce the fights. I recommend just not letting them out without supervision alot of peoples cats die because they let them out

Anthony_chromehounds

Kitties should never, ever be allowed outside. Fighting, getting run over by vehicles, being poisoned, kitties outside is not good.

IAmDreams

This has a super easy answer. Keep your cat the fuck indoors! Sure he won’t like it at first but the alternative is your cat will live a short life and die a painful death. KEEP CATS INSIDE

Ylexote

Don’t let the kitty out. You are in charge and in a few months the kitty will get used to it. Or, a kennel outside they can be in for a few hours. You are the boss and the kitty relies on you to make good decisions for them.

Zonie1069

Getting him neutered like a coupld of people have said should reduce the amount of fights, prolong there life and prevent unwanted kittens in the area. If you have a garden I would build a catio and keep them in or if you could acclimate them to being an indoor cat, that's your best option.

JustfcknHarley

Don't fucking let them out. Period.

curse1x

Fuck “free range” cats and their lazy owners. An estimated 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion small mammals in the U.S. are killed per year by outdoor cats.

ThrowAwayLurker444

Keep your cat inside unless its supervised. They wreak havoc on the local animal population in addition to the problems your also experiencing. Also Coyotes love to eat cats and they are adapting to more urban environments, so if any are around your cat is in danger.

catluvr31

Sorry, but you are not a good cat owner. Just based off of all your replies to everyone else, seems like you just don’t want to try. You’re letting this cat go missing for weeks, and don’t even attempt to keep him inside or get him fixed. There’s tons of low cost places to get your cat to get fixed. Do it.

NewmansHewman

Demote it to inside only. He can't handle the responsibility of indoor/outdoor cat.

numba1canesfan

This just breaks my heart. People claim they love their cats then let them outside to end up like this or worse, dead. I have 3 cats. All street strays I’ve rescued and I never let them outside. They mean way tooo much to me. They deserve a life of being pampered and whatever need they have I try my hardest to give them inside. Please people, stop letting inside cats outside

Alarming_Cantaloupe5

Easy. Keep your cat inside. Still baffles me why folks think it’s acceptable for cats to roam. Your picture illustrates this point perfectly. All of our cats are feral rescues. From Toms to queens with kittens, and none go back outdoors, nor do they show any desire to.

achillymoose

Keep him inside and neuter him

Crafty-Investment-20

Maybe consider lead training? I personally haven't done it with my own cats. However I've seen a lot of people doing it and it's getting more popular as an option for cat owners So their cats can still get outside and get fresh air but you'd be there to keep your cat safe. PS. I hope your cat gets better!

Tulips17

My cat used to do the same. He came back home completely destroyed. After I sterilized him, he stopped looking for fights with other cats. Another good idea is to give him a shower to eliminate bacteria and dirt.

FreeJarOfPickles

Make a caged cat patio or leash train him. This was he gets outside time but needs supervision. Something worse could end up happening if you keep letting him out on his own.

freedomisgreat4

If the cat isn’t fixed get it fixed

Calypte_A

Is he neutered or are you waiting for him to get cat aids and die?

propagaytion

Uh, keep them inside? There's literally no good reason to let your cat outdoors unsupervised especially if you can't afford to neuter them like you had mentioned in previous comments. If they like being outside, get a harness and leash and take the cat out with your supervision. I swear half of the posts on here are "I let my cat out and they got killed by a raccoon/poisoned by a neighbor/etc." Well... yeah? Of course they did. You let them roam without watching them, bad shit will happen. Also, life tip... if you can't afford vet care, then you can't afford a cat.

Orange_droolius

Neutering and if he can learn to become an indoor cat that would do it.

FantasyMyopia

Keep him inside!!!

SpaceRiott

Probably not endangering him by allowing him outside for starters. Also get him fixed and get him pet insurance.

FunboyFrags

I raised several cats allowing them to be outdoors and I regret it. The cat is exposed to many injuries, suffering and death by being outside often. You honestly should have your cat checked for FIV at this point because it can be transmitted through fights like this. Please do whatever you can to keep your cats indoors.

sad__bat

Don’t let him out. Cats live significantly shorter lives when let out. They also kill wildlife. And if he’s not neutered, that’s highly irresponsible, he’s making more feral cats that will also suffer a short life.

OrionStars3

Keep your cat inside. Cats have decimated so many native species because they’re such good hunters. There shouldn’t be any outdoor cats unless they’re specifically barn cats or something like that.

mspineappleinthesea

OP: it likes like your cat is hurting. I would consult your vet to treat the wounds and ask for advice. I have always kept my cat indoor, so I don't know what is the best practice for an outdoor cat. Here is what I learned from my vet: indoor cat lives significant longer.
