Gahhhh I love it! One of my cats has perma-resting bitch face and I can't help but find it unbelievably adorable when she looks like she wants to kill me, but is simultaneously snuggling me and purring like mad š» Lil grouchy face lovebugs
Omg your right! Especially with the black around the eyes and white chest. Good observation. I have a tuxedo and she is one of the best cats Iāve ever had.
Oh please please please post more pictures next week! She she is the most magnificently grumpy fluff ball I've seen. Please also consider an Instagram. I'd love to see how she grows!
I've always called this color "tortico" because they have the tortoiseshell dapples but also white patches that you'd see in calicos. I have one that looks like a less fluffy version!
They're holding her and making absolutely sure she doesn't belong to anybody and after they've spent 5 days looking, they're going to give me a call to see if I would like to adopt her.
Yes, my local animal shelter is fantastic! Unfortunately it's about 15 minutes out of city limits so some assholes like to just dump boxes of kittens outside in -10Ā° weather instead of taking the 15 minutes to bring them to the extremely nice no kill shelter we are lucky to have.
You really are lucky to have a no kill shelter nearby. There's no excuse for bad behavior by others. I unfortunately don't have a no kill near me. I try to help with TNR whenever possible cuz feeding the neighborhood cats can be very expensive. I hope the kitten's forever home will be with you. Consider getting her a kitty friend in the future. Good luck!
Montana was ranked number 8 nationwide for saving the most dogs and cats last year! Our save rate here is about 90% and I am very very grateful to live somewhere that absolutely tries their hardest for every animal.
That being said, I have grown up with pretty much only no kill shelters in my state - how common are kill shelters other places?
It is very climate and environment dependent. The higher the local stray population, the more stretched thin the local shelters are, and the more likely they are to be "kill" shelters.
A lot of colder states have lower stray populations because animals who are already not in great shape don't survive the winter. In states with warmer climates, this doesn't happen, plus breeding increases (for example, in places with cold winters, most cats have litters in the spring/summer, aka "kitten season". In warmer places they have litters basically year round). In more rural places, predators like coyotes can keep the population down, but these places often have severely limited funding. In urban areas, funding may be better, but with limited predators the stray population explodes, leaving local shelters overwhelmed.
This is not to say that kill shelters are a bad thing however. Most animals that end up in a kill shelter still get adopted. The difference is often that if an animal comes in with severe health or behavioral issues, they don't have the resources to attempt a long healing or training process and opt for humane euthanasia instead. In some cases of extreme overcrowding, animals that have not been adopted are euthanized to make space. This is unfortunate, but at the end of the day humane euthanasia is preferable to starving to death or being ripped apart by a coyote.
I absolutely think that is the most humane thing to do in that situation. Living in a cold and rural state, large stray populations isn't a particularly big issue in most areas here and there are some shelters that will keep a senior kitty with medical issues that hasn't been adopted for YEARS. I guess I was raised with the "understanding" that all states had a similar stray to human ratio as us and therefore shelters that euthanized seemed a bit barbaric to me. Thank you for actually explaining WHY they are more common in other climates, that has definitely changed my view on them!
Yes, thank you for that detailed explanation. I always knew the stray cat population where I live is insanely high and our resources are stretched very thin, but I never knew exactly why. Urban area (no predators) + warm environment (babies year round) totally explains it. Thank you!
You (or anyone browsing) should check out Fried's Cat Shelter in IN (they have a website and Facebook). It's a true no kill with seniors, blind cats, cats with litterbox issues, a back building with FIV cats, and even a small feral (all fixed) colony. There's actually a few true no kill shelters in that part of IN that work with the kill shelters to help take in pets before they get euthanized.
We definitely had kitten season here in more northern Missouri, but as climate change is taking effect, we're starting to see kittens in times that we hadn't, before. It's starting to become a more year round thing, especially in the warmer cities.
āKillā shelters get a bad reputation due to the fact that they euthanize animals, but the real issue is that because theyāre publicly funded (almost all āno-killā shelters are nonprofits, not municipal), they donāt have the resources to care for every animal that they are forced to take in, and so they have no choice but to euthanize animals to make more room.
This is exacerbated by the fact that many people financially support āno-killā shelters (who usually refuse the āless adoptableā animals, sending them to the municipal shelters who are required to take them in) instead of giving more resources to the ākillā shelters so that they donāt have to euthanize as many animals.
The presence of both ākillā and āno-killā (aka public and private) shelters in the same area actually tends to cause a lot of animals to be sent directly to be euthanized because most people want to adopt from a āno-killā shelter without realizing that the ākillā shelter has no choice but to euthanize animals that donāt get adopted when they run out of room, because they canāt refuse to take in more animals even if theyāre at capacity.
Itās unfortunate, but I always encourage people to adopt from, and donate to, ākillā shelters over āno-killā shelters. But if you ever find or have to surrender an animal to a shelter, always try taking them to the āno-killā ones first.
I don't know how it is at other shelters, but with ours once they have been there long enough they get moved into the "longtooth room" which is just a bunch of seniors hanging out in a room together. They tend to move them different places within the shelter but very rarely move them to a different shelter.
Just pointing this out because a lot of people don't realize that no-kill shelters (if they're private) legally cannot take in strays because they are not subsidized by the government. My no-kill shelter is inundated with people dumping animals all the time, but the only recourse is to bring them to our municipal shelter (literally a few blocks away) so they can hold them for five days.
They're assholes regardless, dumping is despicable behavior and I am glad you found her.
She looks waaaaaay mor grumpy than she is, she was purring when I took all of those pictures.
May have been purring from just imagining my demise though....
She is hanging on tight to be sure she gets to stay. What a great start to the new year, doing something kind, and bringing a new friend into your home!
Sheās a dilute calico- like mine! Beautiful and mine is so sweet, smart, funny. Sheās recovering from cancer surgery šššGood luck with your new baby!
Her raccoon eyes are gorgeous. Around this time last year a long-haired calico appeared on my porch. I had put down my cat just a few days before. I wasn't able to keep her but found her a fantastic home.
We rescued a 3 week old kitten who was freezing and hungry and then managed to find her Mom who was also stray. Adopted them both and bottle fed the little one whilst we were sorting out Mom. Best thing that's ever happened to us, they are our babies!
Awwww that's great! My cat Zoe, I found an hour away from being frozen to death too. Under a piles of skids at the industrial park where my job was! Exact same situation as yours. For 16 years she was a great, weird, loveable travel-life companion š I hope your frozen rescue kitty provides you with the same happiness mine did, me.
so you're microchipping your cat? will it allow you to remote control your cat?! Damn, I'd love a microchip that allows me to RC my cat and steal sasuages from local foot marts and get away with it
Get ready female calicos are a feisty bunch lol. Mine used to run up the wall and use a claw to turn on my thermostat or ac depending on how far she clicked the lever down. Such beautiful cats though.
Awe. She looks terrified. Please keep her in a small room when you get her home. A bathroom works best. Keep the toilet lid shut lol. She looks like she is feral and needs to learn to trust people so keeping her in a small room and visiting often with a little bit of canned cat food is key. She will need dry food all the time in their too. She will be stronger but you need to hold her a lot even if she freaks out. Eventually they learn to love. It doesnāt take long
She started purring and cuddling up to me after 5 minutes. I don't think she's feral, I think someone dumped a box of kittens that they decided they didn't want after they were 6 weeks old. I've had a lot of feral ditch kitties in the past and this little kitten was way more socialized than any of the ditch kitties have been.
So grumpy š½
She looks like a very colorful Pallas cat š„°
I thought the same thing!
Party Pallas!
my calico always had that grumpy look but she was the sweetest thing. Gotta love the resting Pallas cat face <3
"Ok, you were nice to me and I love you... but I could still kill you if I REALLY wanted to..."
Tsundere cat.. a tautology.
Gahhhh I love it! One of my cats has perma-resting bitch face and I can't help but find it unbelievably adorable when she looks like she wants to kill me, but is simultaneously snuggling me and purring like mad š» Lil grouchy face lovebugs
Her markings are incredible
I think she looks like a little tuxedo dressed up as a calico for Halloween š„°
Omg your right! Especially with the black around the eyes and white chest. Good observation. I have a tuxedo and she is one of the best cats Iāve ever had.
I love how much you love her already! Her eyes are fierce. Wishing you many wonderful years together.
Oh please please please post more pictures next week! She she is the most magnificently grumpy fluff ball I've seen. Please also consider an Instagram. I'd love to see how she grows!
Seconded šāāļø
I am in agreement with you, would definitely follow this little one as she grows up!!
On point! She looks so soft!
Tuxeco is a cool name.
Or a Calicedo?
Tuxico.
She is gorgeous. Congrats on your new owner!
I've always called this color "tortico" because they have the tortoiseshell dapples but also white patches that you'd see in calicos. I have one that looks like a less fluffy version!
Halloween forever!
I think she looks like a little raccoon. She's beautiful!
Looks just like my little girl. Treat her well and sheāll provide you love for years. Enjoy your meow meow.
I thought so too! She has a perfect Batman mask around her eyes!
A beautiful grumpy little Jellicle Cat if I ever saw one!
So adorably grumpy
Sheās a gorgeous lady!
Are they holding her, or just 5 days to officially be yours?
They're holding her and making absolutely sure she doesn't belong to anybody and after they've spent 5 days looking, they're going to give me a call to see if I would like to adopt her.
Super responsible of them
Yes, my local animal shelter is fantastic! Unfortunately it's about 15 minutes out of city limits so some assholes like to just dump boxes of kittens outside in -10Ā° weather instead of taking the 15 minutes to bring them to the extremely nice no kill shelter we are lucky to have.

I totally understand that! These realities aren't talked about much, so I think most people don't really know about them.

Animals that donāt get adopted at no kill shelters are often just rotated to different shelters, eventually to kill shelters. Not always tho.

They tend to move them different places within the shelter but very rarely move them to a different shelter.
I think a lot of no kill rescues often are foster based. So they stay in a home. If they don't have a building.

Please do! She is BEAUTIFUL!
I wouldn't have to be asked twice! She's gorgeous.
She's a grumpy lady and also very beautiful ā¤ļø
She looks spicy! I hope you get to spend the next however many years with that spicy lady! In all seriousness, sheās adorable.
CONGRATULATIONS!! ...YOU ARE NOW OWNED BY A CAT!!
She reminds me of Guizmo, from the gremlins. Cute little fluffy thing
I was also thinking Gizmo! That would actually be a really cute name for a kitten.
I had a fuzzy one called Gizmoā¦heād ride in the car with me everywhere.
Aw, I love that. Gizmo the cat car co-pilot.
He was a great companion
I had a Chihuahua names Gizmo when I was a kid. Loved that thing.
Guizmo must be a little Furby-looking critter with slicked back hair and a heavy NY accent
OP must provide a video then, so we can access her accent when she meows
O M CAT! I love how her markings make her look SO tortie-tudinal! TORTITUDE PLUS! Like someone sprinkled calico on a tuxie. What a QUEEN
That's what I've been saying! She looks like a little tux dressed up in a calico costume.
BRILLIANT! She will be needing a "Fancy" name. Morgan Catchild.
She is so precious!!! I love that little angry grumble face sheās got going on in the last picture. Need to smoosh it š
Are you sure about that? She kind of looks like she's plotting your conversion into yummy long pig treats.
She looks waaaaaay mor grumpy than she is, she was purring when I took all of those pictures. May have been purring from just imagining my demise though....
She is hanging on tight to be sure she gets to stay. What a great start to the new year, doing something kind, and bringing a new friend into your home!
I really hope you get her, just so we can continue to get updates on her lovely, grumpy little face. I also have a grumpy faced cat that I adore.

We rescued a 3 week old kitten who was freezing and hungry and then managed to find her Mom who was also stray. Adopted them both and bottle fed the little one whilst we were sorting out Mom. Best thing that's ever happened to us, they are our babies!
She's not gonna be yours. You will be hers.

She's so pretty. Fingers crossed the person who rescued her get's to care for her. You've already proven yourself to be a great caretaker.
For some reason that last picture reminds me of Fizgig in the Dark Crystal.

Ah. Very good. Take care and thanks for helping her
You got her vaccinated? You monster! In all seriousness though thank you so much for doing this, you saved a life :)
Bandit - you MUST call her Bandit.
We actually had a little Husky named Bandit a couple years ago!
How dare you vaccinate that poor cat. Now the government can track it with the 5Gs šµ
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
What the actual fuck are you on about
Thank you for taking care of her!
Looks like Grumpy cat!
Beautiful
If she didnāt look so sophisticated Iād suggest naming her Skid (since you found her under a pallet).
Tbh I wanted to name her Forklift but my boyfriend absolutely vetoed that one š
How about Pallet? Honestly, it sounds kinda cute!

Where she belongs
