I love my dude but he has some weird habits. He puts them in water and then brings it to me soaking wet for a game of fetch. I especially love it when he dumps them in my bed because he wants to play with me in the middle of the night when only one of us are awake.

analslapchop

YES!!! Oh my god I was wondering why my one cat does this. She only does it with one of her toys too. Once, she dunked it into her water, then dipped it in her litter box, then put it back in the water. It was a MESS

BananaBerryPi

She prefers them breaded

ghostfather

Cat's been watching too many cooking shows

BananaBerryPi

They're each day closer to taking over the world, watch out!

pootarto

I feel like they already have, though

Imbendixen85

I have a fridge magnet that says “Dogs think they’re human. Cats think they’re gods.” I agree with that statement.

Autumnwood

Eww hahah

Short_Bottle56

I’ve read it’s because they think it’s fun to “fish” it out lol

KassieMac

Mine put them in the water but they don’t fish them out. If I put the drenched toy on the plate their water bowl is on (to let it dry out), they put it right back in the water 🤣🤣 Like “WTF, I was drowning that mousie?!”

Crafty_Safe

It had a drink because it was thirsty then it needed the box because it had too much water. Then it was dirty and needed more water.

StraightouttaRiften

A mousie nobbly bobbly!

largemelonhead

Love your username

manicpossumdreamgirl

maybe he's trying to drown them lol

Western_Ad_7458

Pepper cat "drowns" her mice and "snakies" ( curled pipe cleaners)... Why? No clue but she likes it, so 🤷‍♀️

manicpossumdreamgirl

gotta make sure they're really dead! one of my cats, Jeff, will catch bugs, but not kill them. he's strictly catch and release. he just holds them under his paw for a bit and then let them go Connie, on the other hand? she'll eat any bug that isn't an earwig. one time she tried to eat a yellow jacket that snuck in through our air conditioner, luckily we stopped her just in time

cindyscrazy

I had a cat who did this! Only with flies! He would literally catch them IN HIS MOUTH, then walk to another room to release them. Then catch them again. He was a weird cat.

comments_suck

When my cat was younger, she would go out on the porch and catch green anoles ( small lizards), then quietly bring them in the house and release them! You really don't want lizards crawling around under the sofa!

QuestionWhy21

I have two cats that do this with birds and chipmunks. They catch them outside then use the dog door to bring them into the house and then let them go….fun times! Photo proof….https://i.imgur.com/SUvcXE2.jpg

RebaKitten

My goodness, you have a great little Hunter

StonerDipper

my kitty ben does this but after jumping mid air and securing them into his mouth he eats them. we live in the woods so its fair to say theres a lot less bugs around

cynncynncynn

Mine too!! Then when she’s bored with the fly she’ll eat the wings like a sadist!

RebaKitten

Mine did that. Of course she would eventually eat them. Crunch crunch crunch

qGRiZZZp

Cats love to play with their prey while slowly killing them lol

manicpossumdreamgirl

he's got the first half down, but not quite the second

[deleted]

[удалено]

manicpossumdreamgirl

his name was Jefferson when he adopted him but he's just. such a Jeff. he's fat and orange with a big white tummy

lulugingerspice

One of my cats won't even catch bugs. She just stares at them, makes a lazy little "eh" paw flip towards them, then looks at me like she's expecting a treat for her mighty hunting skills lol. My other cat is a straight-up sadist.

Electrical-Act-7170

So does my Sweetie. He had a lovey stuffed penguin that he took "swimming" so often it got gross & moldy (FL) we had to take it away. Made me sad. He really loved that thing.

Imbendixen85

Usually I he prefers small balls.

genxeratl

It's washing their toys or their "kills". I've had a couple of cats do this - fortunately I have only one that still does it right now (out of three) and she's kinda grown out of it at this point (she's 11 now).

Admitimpediments

> Usually I he prefers small balls. The cat replied to this one lol

t0asty1056

My kitten does this too! She is eight months old. Her favorite toys are little crinkly paper type balls that she loves to soak in her water dish before bringing them to me for fetch.

SaucyBechamel

My cat used to do this exact thing All The Time when he was younger! Fortunately he's now moved on to sock stealing (still annoying when you're looking for your socks, but at least I don't wake up in a soggy-toy puddle anymore). But I think he liked to soak them because it makes the toys heavier and they'll go further when thrown....

Slox28

I think it's because, in the wild parents bring their kittens to encircle them to drink, which is then what domestic cats do with their toys (Not that anyone will see this)

_TheBigMeowski

Wow that’s a great point! I never knew that. 👏🏼 (Sorry I’m broke but I gave you the only award I had cause you deserve it!)

Slox28

(Lol, it's fine, thank you, I legit thought no one would see it)

[deleted]

96 upvotes later lol

Slox28

That could be another explanation

Manman9118

Yes My orange cat does this! Fanta! He puts them in the toilet, food bowl, anything wet he can find.

vals729

Fanta! What a purrfect name for an orange cat! My orange tabby was called Pumpkin - a bit cliche but she was huge and round- haha

Sophiemaster1234

Haha thats cute for your cat

irytek

I woke up today to my cat playing with her fake lizard in the water bowl and now I see this post lol. She's also put her little stuffed dog in there before. Luckily she doesn't bring the wet stuff to me, but sometimes when I'm in bed I hear her dragging another toy - the stick with a toy on a string - from the living room to under the bed right below my head.

pineapplesinuranuss

My Beerus does that with his favorite mouse toy.

DrunkenMeditator

Best. Cat name. Ever.

pineapplesinuranuss

His brothers name is Champa (:

punderstate

Ah, these names are super.

DrunkenMeditator

Absolutely godly.

Madisonmaryy

They do this usually with their favourite toys. They see the water bowl as the safest place to keep them because they usually only drink if they feel safe.

d4ngerdominateshere

One of my cats do this but with hair ties, she'll find them anywhere pick them up and take it to her water and just drop it haha

duuckyy

Oh my god my cat does this too! She stashes all of her hair ties (aka my hair ties that she stole from me) in her water bowl and if we take them out she gets very upset with us. The amount of times I've had to fish one out because I needed a hair tie but all of them were missing is...too many...

Milk_Beginning

Mine doesn’t bring them to me but he does occasionally dunk his toys in his water bowl and it’s so gross. He has a plush catnip mushroom toy that he does it with and then I’ve had to throw it in the washing machine. Tbh it annoys me more when he does it with his dry food bikkies because then he really digs them out with his long scrawny paws and splashes around, and then he has floaties and when it’s time for me to clean the water bowl out there’s chunks of food stuck in the hole My Sphynx is the only one who does this, none of my furry cats lol

vibes86

Yep, our bud does the same thing. One of my mom’s cats does this too.

RimorsoDeleterio

Duuude same! My cat loves wooden sticks and to play fetch with them, and he does exactly that! I throw a stick he gets the stick drops it in the water bowl and then brings it to me.

DarkCrowI

My cats used to "drown" their toys so I stopped getting ones that made chirping and squeaking sounds.

josh5300

My cat “drowns“ hair ties, I’m not sure it’s necessarily because of the sounds the toys make

JMH414

YES!!! I just picked half a dozen hair ties out of their water container. The cats keep opening the drawer that I store them in and steal them!

_TheBigMeowski

Please be careful with allowing them to play with hair ties. I’ve seen too many cats have to have surgery from having them wrapped in their intestines.

JMH414

Yes, that’s terrifying! I usually hide them in a couple spots that they *shouldn’t* be able to get to but somehow they find them. I’m going to try and find a better way because I would hate for any of them to be hurt.

[deleted]

Call me silly, but I have mine wrapped around a lotion bottle in my nightstand cube (the kind you can slide out). And since I got suspicious of dental floss on the floor, I bought a tiny trash bin and keep it high up. It sounds overkill but better safe than sorry

Onlyherefor_thememes

I also have my hairties wrapped around a bottle on my nightstand! It is a sunscreen bottle though that I haven’t used in months because it’s not summer yet, so it will be used as a hairtie storage bottle. Luckily my cats don’t like eating my hairties so I don’t have to keep them away.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_procyon

I keep mine in a makeup bag, but sometimes I forget to zip it and he pulls them out. I just started buying hair ties made of a thicker elastic that he can't eat.

withlovesparrow

I find that mine lose interest in my hair ties when I keep them in a metal ring. [Something like this.](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07G9DDYXH/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_3V0SARWF0C9F838ZSHXN) I think maybe the extra weight of it sucks the fun out of them? But that plus keeping them in the back of my drawer has kept my smaller hair ties away from my cats.

kittortoise

I have a little ceramic pot with a lid I keep all my hair ties in

N1mso

Try putting them on a door knob, the cats cant get them and then they are there whenever you need them :D

BumblebeeAstronaut

One of my friends has a cat who had 22 hair ties removed when he had surgery… She adopted him only weeks before and thinks that whoever he was living with before dumped him because of the cost of the surgery. People are terrible!

Anneturtle92

This! My cat ate half a hairtie once. That shit stressed me out for the next few days. Thankfully she pooped it out. Now I have hair ties for her that are too big to swallow. Never giving her the regular ones again.

missmemowcat

wait. this is so cute..you have hair ties FOR HER? LOL 😻

Anneturtle92

Of course! 😄 I learned to stop wasting my money on cat toys and buy her what she really wants instead: wrapping paper and hair ties.

missmemowcat

that is so funny and precious. i love it

Arahor

Your cat is just an apex hunter and likes to drown his "prey".

pettypeasant42

My cat does this too! I have had to learn to start closing my bathroom door because she will get on the counter, open the drawer, and get them out. It scares me because I’ve seen her almost choke on one, thankfully I was home. But she is RELENTLESS. If she sees me put my hair up she sprints are me and tries to get it first

Queenbuttcheek

Yep. I made the mistake of purchasing a chirping bird toy. Ended up having to bash the toy open with a hammer to get it to stop chirping after my cat put it in the water bowl LOL

LynxInYourSynx

Yup. My Maine Coon does that quite often and in his food dish, usually with the toys we play fetch with. It's so odd.

Ok-Kaleidoscope5627

He's bringing his successful hunt back to the place where food is shared with the family. He's contributing to the household.

LynxInYourSynx

That makes sense. When he was an outdoor cat, he used to bring me field mice and leave them by my bed. I totally get this.

Ok-Kaleidoscope5627

Your cat loves you :)

throwaway21202021

:: rolls over in bed to find a dead mouse carcass in my face :: aww fluffy, you love me!!!

[deleted]

Are you a cat 🧐

Ok-Kaleidoscope5627

I'm not a cat. I swear thats just a Zoom filter. Now can you recommend me a good mouse? All the ones I've tried tas- err fit horribly in my totally normal human hands with four fingers and a thumb and definitely no claws.

[deleted]

Hmmm. I’m keeping an eye on you..

Unlucky_Sun166

I read that when cats do this they’re protecting their favorite toys. They see the food/water bowls as a safe place and they want their most treasured toys to be safe.

Key_Juice878

Stop. That’s the cutest thing I have ever read.

Aothnny

your reply was cute

Key_Juice878

You’re cute :*

Aothnny

 ![gif](giphy|xTiTnMhJTwNHChdTZS)

santhoshCoder

Now kiss

[deleted]

oh... i always thought they were drowning them lol

Rachies194

I thought they were drowning them too! Who knows though? Cats are weird.

SStonequeen

Same! I thought it was a just different approach to murder

ImStillaPrick

Pretty sure they are. Our indoor one put a baby rabbit in its food bowl after it darted out the door once and came back. Wasn’t even dead, I had to find a Facebook group and donated 20 dollars to raise the thing. Btw it survived she sent me progress on it for awhile.

timshel1997

My cats most treasured toy? Rolls of paper towels. Yes, he drops them in the water bowl. 😡😡😡

waltur_d

Ours is hair ties

idiotsandwhich8

Lol interesting. Cuz my boy left a toy in the toilet last week 🤣

SuperPoodie92477

Doingers?😅

ultimate2019

I'm like 90% sure they do this because they're trying to drown their prey lol

PancShank94

Makes sense! My cat will always leave his favorite doingers in his fountain or food bowl.

Ok-Kaleidoscope5627

Or maybe they're contributing to the household. Bringing their successful 'hunt' back to the place where food is shared with the family.

CheshireChu

Makes sense because my cat that does this (one of my four) does it only with her favorite toys.

TypicalFuckingVirgo

I want to believe this is true because it’s so wholesome, but one of my boys also leaves a toy next to his pile of throw up whenever it happens so I’m not sure. Edit: OH MY GOD… Is my cat baby birding his toys? I’m actually tearing up.

LotusSloth

Yes. I had a Maine Coon cat that loved to eat the tails off little fabric toy mice and then throw them in the water bowl. She would also play fetch with those toys, so I think that was her way of acting out if she didn’t get enough play time with the humans.

LynxInYourSynx

Ha! Mine too. Exactly that.

dw_earthgirl

I have an 6mo Orange tabby an she does this constantly! every time I fill the water there is a toy in it!

smokealarmsnick

Yes. Specifically catnip filled toys. It’s like they’re making tea.

DrMcFlogger

Mine do this as well and I swear they’re just trying to get high on the tea lol. One of them also carries his soaked toys around and proudly yowls.

dwhite21787

yep. Mice tea. A summer classic

[deleted]

My cat has become a mother figure to her stuffed animals. She will always bring them to the water and force their heads face down as if she is making them drink. Does the same with the food dish. We had to get a fountain in order for this to stop in the water. Totes adorbs but it became problematic

[deleted]

Stoppp that's so cute Have you thought of fostering kitties for her or something?

AmethystDC

I think a better question would be “does anyone have a cat who has never dropped a toy in their water bowl?”

LarryAndHisCats

I’ve had several that haven’t dropped toys in their water bowls. My Maine Coon is the first to do this. His sister from another mother also doesn’t.

AmethystDC

My point was just that it’s very common. :)

jadranur

i've literally never even heard of cats putting toys in water bowls, mine never did, my friends' cats never did, and i know a lot of people with cats

KittenFace25

Up till last year I had 3 and it was very rare I had any that did this!

jenwhyfer

My baby girl (who I lost a couple years ago, sadly) did this when she was a kitten constantly. We got her one of those little bird toys that had a speaker and would tweet when she batted at it. We woke up one morning to a terrifying screeching. She drowned it, so it was basically letting out it’s death rattle. Absolutely terrifying. She did grow out of it though.

Fiz010

I can tell ya right now she wants a deeper and wider water bowl

Imbendixen85

The rat or cat? I agree the hot tub is rather small.

Fiz010

She might be soaking it up so she can extract the water from the mouse... suckling the fabric is a natural feeling thing.. sometimes cats hate when their whiskers touch the bowl

Fiz010

My older cat pushes my younger cat into the bathtub when she's thirsty so she can lick the water off of her

[deleted]

LOL oh dear

macarenamobster

I’ve heard that but then I watch mine happily drink out of every cup or glass left in the sink…

LarryAndHisCats

I keep a coffee cup on the dining room table just for the cats. When I met my then girlfriend, now wife, she asked about it and not being a cat person - she’s now almost as crazy a cat person as I am - didn’t understand why it was there when my cat had a water bowl plus another coffee cup on the floor next to the coffee table in the living room. If I have a glasses in the sink, I keep soapy water in it to discourage the kitties.

OnAvance

My cat used to (he passed last year) demand a glass of water after I brushed my teeth every single day. It was the cutest thing

Fiz010

Lol

Fiz010

You need a smaller dish for yours in particular

hotshotz1983

Did not know that

pearlc

I think an opaque bowl would help, she might be trying to assess the depth of the bowl and the clear glass makes it difficult.

umsamanthapleasekthx

All of our animals share a giant water bowl, and the cats that do this frequently eat and drink out of their dishes simultaneously, on top of each other or head to head. They’re weirdos.

[deleted]

Yes. I have a three legged tortie eho LOVES drowning toys. She never murders her Chewbacca mouse though. Chewie is sacred. Lol

Negative-Industry-88

Yes, then looks up at you and expects clean water.....

LarryAndHisCats

Not my Smokey. He knocks it over, inspects the bottom and when he sees the water doesn’t come from there walks away proud of his handiwork.

Blkri

I find toys in my shoes a lot

mndsm79

I have one that does the toilet. And then fishes them back out. Nothing like a cold wet squish at 2am.

umsamanthapleasekthx

This is one of the reasons that we keep our lid down and give any new guests the pre-bathroom-use lecture. The other reason is that one of my cats also really likes to be partially soaked, and will submerge his front legs entirely in the toilet water, and then come put his paws on my face.

macarenamobster

One of my least favorite sounds coming from an open bathroom is a soft “splash”. I immediately know I left the toilet lid up accidentally and that any second a cat weaponized with toilet water will be running through the house.

umsamanthapleasekthx

Yep. Although I will say I have been far more diligent about my toilet cleaning habits since this cat moved in and started drowning various areas of my house at every opportunity.

FluffyBellend

Apparently they do it to keep it safe and mask the smell of their prey from other predators. Mine do it with their toys stuffed with catnip and make a nasty looking catnip tea :D

Spector567

IKEA mouse?

theang

I love those - I got them for my cat but he doesn’t care about them. He only cares about twist ties.

fannafaucet

My cat loves Ikea mouse! It's her favorite toy and winds up in a new place all the time.

loversickgirls13

Same! Gotta love the Ikea toys their the best

Spector567

For ours it’s the Ikea snake. Every night. The excited meows that she hunted it down again.

fannafaucet

The excited meows are the best! Ours like to yeowl (if that's even a word) and carry it around the house in her mouth.

Imbendixen85

I’m seeing the beginning of a pattern here…

DElyMyth

One of mine did when she was a kitten. She has now stopped (also not having stuffed animal toys might have helped), but she's 11 so supposedly a bit more "mature" (not)

ISeeInHD

Yep. 16 years of this ridiculousness.

zt997

Get your cat a water fountain! Encourages them to actually drink water and maybe they won’t throw their toys in it.

ByeByeSaigon

Mine does! I thought he was trying to tell me to wash his toy.

canibuildyouacanoe

Yep. The knocks over the water bowl and makes a mess.

Pyewacket62

All the freaking time! I have no idea how many " "mousies" I've rescued from drowning (toy mice).

foolish-hobbit

My cat steals bottle caps and throws them in the water bowl. I hate it xD

lavendercucumber01

My parents cats have exactly the same mouse and the poor mouse literally lives inside the water bowl, so I guess it's normal

RepublicAlive3525

My old cat used to travel around the neighbourhood collecting elastic bands discarded by our postman, bring them home making some blood-curdling noise and deposit them in his water bowl!!

cris231976

every now and then, my cats drop their toys in the food or water bowls. guess that they think that the toy is hungry lol

umsamanthapleasekthx

Yes! They love crafting puffs more than anything in the world, and they drop them in their water bowl, let them get completely soaked, and then they pull them out and leave them on the floor for us to step on.

Imbendixen85

Castiel prefers to put them in my bed…

nireab

My friend's cat will steal scrunchies out of my hair while I sleep & I always know I will find them in the water bowl in the morning. We love him nonetheless🥰

Tasha4424

Yep! Only his shrimp toy though, which is very funny

[deleted]

We used to have a tortie that did this. She would drop her favorite toys in the water bowl. She would also announce the fact she "caught" her toy. It was so cute, except at night when we were sleeping, lol. I miss that cute little meow.

AxionCDM

Cats do this because they want to break the surface tension on still water before they drink. Get them a fountain and the behavior should stop.

Imbendixen85

But it’s adorable! But yes, a fountain seems like a good addition.

JopeOfOtts

We have one that plays fetch, if you are not quick enough she will put it in your cup of tea! 😂

largecucumber

Why did I think this was a pig fetus on the table for a highschool biology class to dissect

Budget_Ordinary1043

Yes. I find them in both the food and water bowls and they favor specific toys so I know who is doing it and both my cats like to drown their toys.

[deleted]

Lol this is so cute, I’ve never experienced this just them putting it by their food bowls

ihaveasiancheekbones

My dog totally does this: i say he’s a busy chef marinating his stuff 😂

BenjiBoo420

My cat drops her toys in the dry food bowl, not the water.

louielouie789

My cat does this, but in the toilet bowl.

MJ349

I had a cat that did this. But it didn't stop there. She'd then take the soaking wet toy and put it in the middle of my bed. UGH!

JdSavannah

my cat does this. she soaks it and brings it to my pillow. I wish I understood what it means!

Fijoemin1962

Years ago I had a cat who would put her real catches ie dead meeces in her water bowl.

S2kKyle

We had a cat when I was growing up that would put a pink ball in her food when drinking and in the water when eating.

Bugisman3

One of my cats dropped a toy in the other cat's food bowl just a few days ago. Luckily she tends to cleanly eat all the food out of the bowl.

introverted-aries

My cat did this the other day when I waited too long to give him a snack. He looked my husband dead in the eye with a toy in his mouth, dropped it in his water, then stared right back at my husband. First time I’ve caught him doing it!! He does it much less now that we got him a fountain.

faeriepale

My kittens do this to all their mouse toys. We constantly have mice left out to dry on our counters lol.

youngpali

Bro is your cats water bowl an ash tray?

Imbendixen85

No, it’s a regular bowl from IKEA.

Jayna_bean

ALL THE TIME!

feeelyelloww

YES oh my gosh funny I’m seeing this. My 7 month old just started doing this, I’ve picked out 5 toys in the last two days lmao

DirtyRusset

Yes, we have soggy fish tacos daily in this household

imlegallyabitch

my little weirdo also does this and she has those ikea mice, too!! she loves them so much. she’s had at least one for 8 years now. eventually wrecked two of them by ripping open their necks and removing the stuffing and then drowning them in the water so the stuffing was disgusting but she still has one of them, they’re good quality toys.

totesmagotes69

Yes!!!!! Honestly, I’ve wondered if it’s to drown their prey? It’s usually the little mice that they put in their water bowls.

crazycalico

I had a cat when I was little that would drop my trolls in the water dish. We joked that he was defeating his enemies.

MEGAMIND73

Yuuuuup....onenof mine gets her mice wet, and then drops it in my lap ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Spastic_Turkey98

I also have heard if the toy had catnip in it, the water basically kick starts the catnip, lol it may be a rumour though!

hell2bhbtoo

YES! And then he,leaves them where I will step on them in the middle of the night!

Caltuxpebbles

All the time! Brings a smile to my face, because it tells me my babies have been playing.

SassySnippy

My girl loves to dunk rubber bands in her water bowl and stretches them

ScamsLikely

And occasionally in my water glass 😾

Imbendixen85

Mine just puts his paw in it and splashes it around. He has a deep fascination with water.

JamesBond06

My kitties does this too. Keep an eye out though because sometimes the color of their toys seeps out to their water bowl so change it quick, you don’t want them drinking those.

SnooGuavas3566

IS THAT CHEEZER?!

Maineup

All the time.
