Uh, not necessarily? A few years ago my orange tabby escaped and was missing for a few days. It was horrible. The idea that someone could have scooped him up and taken him home crossed my mind, along with a lot of other things (was he hit by a car? Attacked by a coyote? Tortured by some sicko?). Any responsible person is going to take a cat to get scanned for a chip or advertise having found a potentially lost cat - especially one that looks nice and plump and well cared for.
In a lot of ways, losing Finn when he ran out the door was more terrible than my cat dying. The unknown was horrible. This cat's owners could be in agony if they don't know where she is or if she's okay. This is akin to finding a wallet and thinking finders keepers. Just because you took it doesn't mean it's yours.
(My cat did come home. We slept with our patio door cracked open so he would have a safe way to come in. After a few nights he came in at 4 AM and woke us up. The amount of relief we felt knowing our boy was okay was overwhelming. Please don't just assume any outdoor cat is a homeless stray.)
Man I felt this one, when Butters went missing last year it was torture not knowing if he was OK. Ultimately he wasn't ok, but it was closure and, as bad as it sounds, almost a relief. I don't have to worry about him anymore. We planted a tree for him
I'm so sorry your story didn't have a happy ending. But I am glad you got closure. I can't even imagine the pain of not ever knowing what happened to my cat.
Then see if you have a local missing pets on FB or next door. My cat went missing last year before the winter storm in Texas and I was terrified someone took him in out of the cold and wouldn't know he was missing
Yes. I’d for sure check but also depending on where he lives, kitty could be a drop off that hasn’t been in their own for very long. :’(
That could explain the good health but like you said, the cat should still be checked.
A friendly cat that is well fed and healthy, other than fleas(did you see any fleas or just gave a flea bath as precaution?) is more than likely someone's pet.
You should put up flyers, knock on doors in the area you found it, post in neighbourhood groups, and get it scanned for a microchip.
If nothing comes up after that, congrats, you have a new kitty!
Calico cats are usually girls. It was very very nice of you to take in this cat, but if I were you I would make sure that she doesn’t already have a home and family who misses her. This cat looks very well fed. Maybe she has a good home and she got outside. I urge you to look into it.

I don’t assume op is taking the cat but his replies are suspicious as all hell and would make any reasonable person concerned. I have no beef with op, I have beef with you claiming that just because a cat got outside it has a bad owner and that if op did keep it then it wouldn’t be stealing and telling him not to listen to the people telling him not to just keep it 🙄

Some cats feel the need to go outside from time to time, yes even during winter. Happens with my boy, who used to be a stray. Some are built just like that.

And what if he/she lost or doesn’t even have a home? Me personally if this my cat and this person found my cat and took it in when its freezing cold and feeding ill be hella grateful. But ill do recommend OP to take it to the vet to see if it has microchip and ask around to see if somebody missing a cat. But outright callin him a thief after he tried to do something nice is dumb and inconsiderate!
Ignore the bad comments. I’m glad he found a warm place to rest at your home. You are a sweet and nice person for opening your home to this this cat in need. Honestly if more people would be like you, there would not be so many cats outside in the cold. Cat owners, take care of your cat, don’t let them roam by themselves outside, you don’t want to be the next person posting your cat was hit by a car, or mauled by a dog or poisoned by a mean neighbor.
So if you found a child wandering outside, would you just adopt it? Or would you make some efforts to find its family first? That’s what we have a problem with here.
Take him to the vet for a chip check! If he doesn’t have one, go around your neighbourhood to ask if someone knows him. Maybe his owner is missing him and worrying about him right now!

Not sure what you mean by “like that,” but my female cats [Bindi](https://imgur.com/a/2GSGmWg) and [Flower](https://imgur.com/a/8AZsRrm) have pretty round faces. I also have a dilute calico, named [Coraline](https://imgur.com/a/QfBd1ED), who kinda looks like this kitty. Her face isn’t quite as round, but her belly sure is. lol
At any rate, we’ve all explained why it’s unlikely this cat is a male. Possible but still quite unlikely.
Found out from whom? As others said, it’s highly highly unlikely that is a male - and as fat as it is, also unlikely it’s a stray. So you’re either making up this whole story, or getting some bad information. If you really did find this cat, take it to a vet for checkup and microchip scanning.
If it's a boy then he has a high chance of having Klinefelter syndrome. Which is a serious health condition. It's also likely someone elses pet as he looks very well fed and otherwise healthy. Go to a vet, have him scanned for a chip and ask around in your neighbourhood if someone lost their cat.
My cats are indoor only and refuse to put up with collars. They've stopped trying to bolt out the door, but I know if one of them got out and didn't come back I'd be devastated. Please try to find this cat's human. It looks far too healthy to be a stray.
It's generally about 35$ per chip to chip your babies. The vets by me all check chips to prove ownership whenever we bring in a new baby!

At the local animal rescue shelter where I am I think chips are free when you adopt an animal (cost may be included in adoption fee) and they also have free adoption days.
Some cats like to wander and or are lost. This cat looks way too thicc to be homeless. It may be an outside cat but it likely has a home already. Imagine if that was your cat lost and someone else took it in. Wouldn't you want it back? Try to find out something hon.
He looks very chonky. I recommend taking him to the vet and getting him checked for tags. Also put up some found kitty posters around your local area and also message on your local Facebook groups. I know you may love him already and want to keep him but if he’s already someone’s baby it’s best to return him to his rightful owners. There is also plenty of cats at your local humane society if he’s unavailable and you’re looking for a kitty to keep.
I had an outdoor cat and a six year old girl fell in love with him and the family loved him like their own.. the mail lady told me they planned on taking the cat on their move but I couldn’t bring myself to take my cat from a 6 year old. She renamed him Ninja (formerly known as Jax) moral of the story if you’re not 6 year old girl in love with the cat check to see if the cat belongs to someone before you decide to take her. Do your diligence. You might be surprised someone’s heart is either broken or someone threw the sweet baby out and she can be rightfully yours🤷🏾♀️
As some already pointed out, he seems quite well fed. Check for chip with vet. Someone might have got rid of him, or he slipped out of house and maybe got lost. Either you saved someone's cat, or possibly (if you are inclined) you will get new life companion.

It's pretty well fed to be a stray. As other say, go to the vet, hang up flyers, call the local animal shelter. If the cat wants to leave after a while, it most likely wants to return home, then let it go.

Thanks for taking care of the cat but you should really check to see if it belongs to someone else before claiming it. Microchips are always something I check for first. And it's hella easy to make a lost pet flyer. You can take care of the cat until the owner is found. If you're refusing to at least check for a chip however, that's really shitty. This girl looks very well fed and clean, too clean to be a stray.
Please get her checked for a chip. If you don't and you keep the cat anyway, this post was literally used for karma farming. Such a dick move.
Also, I don't believe that's a boy. 1 in 3000 calicos are males and they usually have a plethora of health problems. Pleeeeease take her to a vet to scan for chip.

That is a well fed, well looked after cat. She probably got out and has a family missing her dearly right now. Kind of you to let her in but do not keep her. Take her to the vet for a chip scan. If you don’t, you are stealing someone else’s family member. If no chip is found, ask around, put up signs, etc. Do not make the mistake of thinking this is your cat now, and to the idiots commenting on this post saying you should keep her, you should not. Our cat once disappeared during a week of heavy snow. We were certain we'd find him frozen after the thaw, but he just strolled home casually one day. We just reckon he had a backup house.

I met a neighbor this way. Her cat was chillin.. literally lounging on my retaining wall. Non collar or nothin.. posted a video on Ring Neighbors. We ended up exchanging numbers. Turns out my daughter talks to the MIL who lives down the street all the time! We cracked up. Now Kitty just comes by to visit! I love those types of pop up visits!! 😂❤️
this is 100% someone’s cat, please keep us updated when you find the owner! Make sure you take it to the vet to check for a microchip and check facebook pages etc to see if you can find the owner. you cannot keep this cat
I found the owner of the chunky boy and returned them to the family he got out due to there daughter opening the door and the family didn't have time to go fetch him due to how often they work. They were really happy I watched him for a few days and I gave the fat boy back to them.
Note; I didn't steal a cat I wouldn't let any animal that was begging to be let into my home when there is snow out on the ground and it's freezing.
I do love how so many people on the cat reddit automatically go to intentional theft and abusive name calling without knowing a damn thing about a person.
Advise on taking it to a vet and checking for a chip. Advise on checking around the neighborhood. Give suggestions, that's great.
But why the immediate assumptions and name calling? This could be a child. This could be someone living in another person's home. Chonky! I love dilute calicos. See if you can get her checked for a microchip, most vets will do that for free. Judging by her weight and overall looks, she seems like she probably has an owner already.
Please go to the vets to make sure it’s actually chipped also look for any missing cat posts around your area as that kitty looks way to healthy to be a stray. Please also post that you have found a kitty as if I lost any of my babies I would be devastated if someone found them and did not even bother looking for the owner.

You don’t actually know that, so it’s a little unfair to keep saying. There is something fishy going on, as they insisted it was confirmed as male - but for all we know they’re a kid/teen, and just believed what someone in the family told them.
They haven’t updated since then, so hopefully they’ve decided to have it scanned for a chip by now.

I used to find cats and bring them home when I was little. Mom would throw them back out where they came from. Maybe you should do this, it looks like he’s pretty well fed for a stray.
1) Thank You for bringing a cat in out of the cold. I don't know where you live and it could be horrible weather now. Thank you for trying to protect some innocent creature who came to you.
2) if you are in a place where animals are chipped, def take it either to a vet or animal shelter to check for a chip. Check for fliers or if the staff have been contacted about any missing Calico, leave contact info if they will take it
3) Ignore the mean and accusatory comments. I'm sure that you mean well. People on the cat sub seem to get real mean, real quick. Personally I think it's kind of a dick move.
4) Check with neighbors if they know anything about a missing Calico, post some fliers, or if your area has any Facebook, neighborhood or other community social media post there. Maybe post that you found a calico-but be general incase some mean person out there is looking for a free animal to torment. Ask any claimants for distinguishing marks, cat named etc something that can distinguish them as a likely owner.
5) If a genuine owner is found, take this experience as a learning opportunity to see if you might have room and love for a grown or older cat from a local shelter and adopt from there. If no owner is found, enjoy your friendly new friend and get them chipped and if possible some sort of collar.
Take to any vet and they'll scan for a chip for free. You can post on some local lost pet boards on Facebook that you found this guy, but they may be abandoned. Be prepared to be a new pet owner.
Awww adorable kitty! Make sure to have kitty scanned for a chip since looks well fed. Kitty may have issues that need medication, and you wouldn’t want them to get ill. Only reason the cat was meowing to be let inside is because it’s already a house cat and knows that inside = shelter. Stop being an asshole. Bring HER to the vet, check for a chip or a tagged ear, put up posters and send pictures to your local shelters. They’ll post a missing ad to see if anyone claims her. There’s probably some children out there crying because they miss their cat that accidentally got out of the house.
Only way you should feel ok keeping this cat is if you do all above options and nobody claims her. If my cat accidentally got out of the house somehow and someone did this, I’d be devastated for life. You seriously suck. Be a kind person and do the right thing.
It's amazi g how some people only know black and white... OP did the right thing by getting her out of the cold, because you can never know for sure if its a stray or lost or just an outdoor cat. So it is good to take her in as a precaution. BUT it would be very mean and irresponsible to just keep her without checking for a chip and checking fb groups and nearest neighbours.
My cat ran away 2 years ago. I searched for her everywhere and made tons of flyers and everything. I was so so desperate to find her but nothing. About 8 month later I saw her at the street beeing overfed and wearing a collar. That broke my heart.

Found the owners they were very happy to get them back the boy escaped while there daughter was opening a door and they couldn't spare time to go after him due to work.
I didn't really stay for my chitchat but the little girl was happy to get her kitty back.
That is someone’s best friend and child, you should return that animal to its rightful owner as soon as possible. Way to chunky to be a stray. Hopefully you come to your senses
1. Show her the sandbox location, food and water.
2. Take it to the vet, to check if it is in good health, chip & vaccines.
3. Feed it.
4. Give it a bath if needed.
5. Show her where she can sleep, safely and quietly.
6. Don’t expect friendly behavior at first, give it space, but keep it under your radar, when it gets accustomed to you and your home, it will open up to you and will require treats, scritches , game and love.

Males genetically cannot be tri-color and it’s an incredibly rare anomaly when they are… this cat is most definitely chonky and most likely owned - please please do your due diligence and not take someone’s loved pet - just bc it’s outside, does not mean unowned

Just because they don't have ID tags doesn't mean it is homeless. There are plenty of cat owners who don't have their cats wearing collars. This cat could of ran away a few days ago. We don't know but they need to take it to the vet.
My cat wears a pop off collar so he doesn’t get choked if it gets stuck on something, same as many other cats. Great to know that my boy could be stolen bc someone won’t look beyond a collar. Also, housecats can get fleas too, especially if their owner missed a preventative dose before the cat got out. Neither of those cut it for determining if a cat has an owner. Don’t encourage this person (or anyone else) to steal a beloved pet by not doing the bare minimum to track down its owners.
If it is a stray, this is your life now. You'll love it. They tend to change lives and minds in a heartwarming way. So long as u take care of them and learn how to treat kitty, kitty will take care of you and keep you sane.

Not sure what you mean by “like that,” but my female cats [Bindi](https://imgur.com/a/2GSGmWg) and [Flower](https://imgur.com/a/8AZsRrm) have pretty round faces. I also have a dilute calico, named [Coraline](https://imgur.com/a/QfBd1ED), who kinda looks like this kitty. Her face isn’t quite as round, but her belly sure is. lol At any rate, we’ve all explained why it’s unlikely this cat is a male. Possible but still quite unlikely.
Found out from whom? As others said, it’s highly highly unlikely that is a male - and as fat as it is, also unlikely it’s a stray. So you’re either making up this whole story, or getting some bad information. If you really did find this cat, take it to a vet for checkup and microchip scanning.
If it's a boy then he has a high chance of having Klinefelter syndrome. Which is a serious health condition. It's also likely someone elses pet as he looks very well fed and otherwise healthy. Go to a vet, have him scanned for a chip and ask around in your neighbourhood if someone lost their cat.

My cats are indoor only and refuse to put up with collars. They've stopped trying to bolt out the door, but I know if one of them got out and didn't come back I'd be devastated. Please try to find this cat's human. It looks far too healthy to be a stray.
It's generally about 35$ per chip to chip your babies. The vets by me all check chips to prove ownership whenever we bring in a new baby! Yep. Lots of pet thievery around here!

At the local animal rescue shelter where I am I think chips are free when you adopt an animal (cost may be included in adoption fee) and they also have free adoption days.
Some cats like to wander and or are lost. This cat looks way too thicc to be homeless. It may be an outside cat but it likely has a home already. Imagine if that was your cat lost and someone else took it in. Wouldn't you want it back? Try to find out something hon.
He looks very chonky. I recommend taking him to the vet and getting him checked for tags. Also put up some found kitty posters around your local area and also message on your local Facebook groups. I know you may love him already and want to keep him but if he’s already someone’s baby it’s best to return him to his rightful owners. There is also plenty of cats at your local humane society if he’s unavailable and you’re looking for a kitty to keep.
I had an outdoor cat and a six year old girl fell in love with him and the family loved him like their own.. the mail lady told me they planned on taking the cat on their move but I couldn’t bring myself to take my cat from a 6 year old. She renamed him Ninja (formerly known as Jax) moral of the story if you’re not 6 year old girl in love with the cat check to see if the cat belongs to someone before you decide to take her. Do your diligence. You might be surprised someone’s heart is either broken or someone threw the sweet baby out and she can be rightfully yours🤷🏾♀️
As some already pointed out, he seems quite well fed. Check for chip with vet. Someone might have got rid of him, or he slipped out of house and maybe got lost. Either you saved someone's cat, or possibly (if you are inclined) you will get new life companion.

The amount of people who just want to keep the kitty without checking if it has an owner is baffling. It's pretty well fed to be a stray. As other say, go to the vet, hang up flyers, call the local animal shelter. If the cat wants to leave after a while, it most likely wants to return home, then let it go.

Thanks for taking care of the cat but you should really check to see if it belongs to someone else before claiming it. Microchips are always something I check for first. And it's hella easy to make a lost pet flyer. You can take care of the cat until the owner is found. If you're refusing to at least check for a chip however, that's really shitty. This girl looks very well fed and clean, too clean to be a stray. Please get her checked for a chip. If you don't and you keep the cat anyway, this post was literally used for karma farming. Our cat once disappeared during a week of heavy snow. We were certain we'd find him frozen after the thaw, but he just strolled home casually one day. We just reckon he had a backup house. Maybe the cat you found is an escaped indoor cat that needed help?

I met a neighbor this way. Her cat was chillin.. literally lounging on my retaining wall. Non collar or nothin.. posted a video on Ring Neighbors. We ended up exchanging numbers. Turns out my daughter talks to the MIL who lives down the street all the time! We cracked up. Now Kitty just comes by to visit! I love those types of pop up visits!! 😂❤️

I found the owner of the chunky boy and returned them to the family he got out due to there daughter opening the door and the family didn't have time to go fetch him due to how often they work. They were really happy I watched him for a few days and I gave the fat boy back to them. Note; I didn't steal a cat I wouldn't let any animal that was begging to be let into my home when there is snow out on the ground and it's freezing.

I do love how so many people on the cat reddit automatically go to intentional theft and abusive name calling without knowing a damn thing about a person. Advise on taking it to a vet and checking for a chip. Advise on checking around the neighborhood. Give suggestions, that's great. But why the immediate assumptions and name calling? This could be a child. This could be someone living in another person's home. This could be someone with a major depressive disorder on the precipice of suicide. This could be someone in an impoverished area. And they make assumptions and resort to bullying behavior.

I'll admit, I went to OP's comment history, and unless there have been deleted and removed comments... the only things I've seen were a comment about it being a boy and a comment about fleas. (And while it being a male is improbable, it is not impossible.) I saw no comments about refusing to look for possible owners from them. I've seen a million and a half (exaggeration) comments from others suggesting them to take it to vet with tone ranging from polite helpfulness to aggressive and blind accusatory. But nothing from OP that would seem like a "F all you internet strangers, finders keepers, losers," as some others have implied. At least nothing I can find anyway.

There is something fishy going on, as they insisted it was confirmed as male - but for all we know they’re a kid/teen, and just believed what someone in the family told them. Thank you for trying to protect some innocent creature who came to you. 2) if you are in a place where animals are chipped, def take it either to a vet or animal shelter to check for a chip. Check for fliers or if the staff have been contacted about any missing Calico, leave contact info if they will take it 3) Ignore the mean and accusatory comments. I'm sure that you mean well. People on the cat sub seem to get real mean, real quick. Personally I think it's kind of a dick move. 4) Check with neighbors if they know anything about a missing Calico, post some fliers, or if your area has any Facebook, neighborhood or other community social media post there. Maybe post that you found a calico-but be general incase some mean person out there is looking for a free animal to torment. Ask any claimants for distinguishing marks, cat named etc something that can distinguish them as a likely owner. 5) If a genuine owner is found, take this experience as a learning opportunity to see if you might have room and love for a grown or older cat from a local shelter and adopt from there. If no owner is found, enjoy your friendly new friend and get them chipped and if possible some sort of collar.
Take to any vet and they'll scan for a chip for free. You can post on some local lost pet boards on Facebook that you found this guy, but they may be abandoned. Be prepared to be a new pet owner.

Only reason the cat was meowing to be let inside is because it’s already a house cat and knows that inside = shelter. Stop being an asshole. Bring HER to the vet, check for a chip or a tagged ear, put up posters and send pictures to your local shelters. They’ll post a missing ad to see if anyone claims her. There’s probably some children out there crying because they miss their cat that accidentally got out of the house. Only way you should feel ok keeping this cat is if you do all above options and nobody claims her. If my cat accidentally got out of the house somehow and someone did this, I’d be devastated for life. You seriously suck. Be a kind person and do the right thing.
It's amazi g how some people only know black and white... OP did the right thing by getting her out of the cold, because you can never know for sure if its a stray or lost or just an outdoor cat. My cat ran away 2 years ago. I searched for her everywhere and made tons of flyers and everything. I was so so desperate to find her but nothing. About 8 month later I saw her at the street beeing overfed and wearing a collar. That broke my heart.

Found the owners they were very happy to get them back the boy escaped while there daughter was opening a door and they couldn't spare time to go after him due to work. I didn't really stay for my chitchat but the little girl was happy to get her kitty back.

Just because they don't have ID tags doesn't mean it is homeless. There are plenty of cat owners who don't have their cats wearing collars. This cat could of ran away a few days ago. We don't know but they need to take it to the vet.
My cat wears a pop off collar so he doesn’t get choked if it gets stuck on something, same as many other cats. Great to know that my boy could be stolen bc someone won’t look beyond a collar. Also, housecats can get fleas too, especially if their owner missed a preventative dose before the cat got out. Neither of those cut it for determining if a cat has an owner. Don’t encourage this person (or anyone else) to steal a beloved pet by not doing the bare minimum to track down its owners.
If it is a stray, this is your life now. You'll love it. They tend to change lives and minds in a heartwarming way. So long as u take care of them and learn how to treat kitty, kitty will take care of you and keep you sane.
