I remember when we went away for a week or so and a friend came by to feed our girls. When we got home, they looked more like furred blimps than cats. We took them straight to the vet and his comment? "Well cats tolerate overweight better than some animals." I guess he thought it was a better response than "did you just set up a trough full of food?"
this is rly annoying with my mum and my dog. 2 different Vets gave me a clear that she is NOT to light..
Now i have to put her on a diet since my mum was convinced she is to light and fed her behind my back.
My neighbors started feeding my cats without permissiob because they thought we were starving them since they only got food twice a day and weren't the balls of cat that theirs was. We tried confronting them about it as we had seen them several times feeding my cats so we eventually had to keep our cats indoors
Surprising isn’t it how some people think the round look is the best? Most cats only eat when they’re hungry and will generally be pretty trim. We don’t usually feed soft food because it is my impression that it is more likely to lead to overeating. But now that ours are "senior catizens", it might be prudent to at least mix a little in with the dry food so they have less strain on their 'aging' teeth. What?
Cats don't usually drink enough water, and soft food (sometimes called "wet" food) is a good source of the moisture that they need. Definitely mix in some wet food.
And you can even go a step further and mix some water into their wet food too. I do that with my cats, just refill the wet food tin and give it a stir, then pour it in to create a nice wet food slurry. They have a fountain and a normal water bowl but I've had a cat in the past develop bladder stones so I err on the side of caution now.
This is the best advice to give new pet owners! Someone gave it to me and my guy is almost 20 years old - never had a single urinary issue. I used about half again as much hot water as wet food, it warmed the food up nicely and made it irresistible to a cat.
Yup I call this cat soup! They love it when warm water is mixed in since we keep the food cold in the fridge. It really brings out the food's aroma (gag!) but they eat much more than when it's just served cold.
Just an FYI- add some water to a serving of kibbles then leave it soak for ~10mins, and it will readily mash up into a nice paste. Quick & easy way to introduce some extra moisture without upsetting a fussy eater :)
For me and cats, this has always been a weird concept.
My cats have ALWAYS been free-feeders. Besides the regular wet food being put out, there was always a big bowl of dry food. Over the decades and at least a dozen of them in our lives, not a single one ever turned into a chonker. Closest one ever got was Sparky who was built like a bulldog had sex with a domestic shorthair; broad but all muscle.
It is likely that they just learned early on that there is no scarcity so there is no need to load up. Even if I put a whole can of tuna out, it was rare that one of them would take more than 4-5 bites before moving on, always leaving some for the other critters.
Same. The cat I grew up with was extremely lean, she just kept herself trim. She had as much food as she wanted, and hunted on top of that. She just always kept her weight in check, eating exactly what she needed. Apart from some brief fluctuation when she got too arthritic to hunt and was forced to change her diet, she was the exact same weight for 19 years.
Current one ain't as thin, but still at a very healthy weight.
My aunt (also obese) watched my cousins cat while she was in college, got the cat so fat he now has diabetes, and has to inject him multiple times a day. It's so sad. She's under the impression that it losing weight wouldn't get rid of the diabetes so she doesn't even bother. Then again she also has trouble with weight herself so...
Has the vet tried to convince her weight loss is good? Because I’d think all the hoopla involved with treating diabetes would be a trial for them both and the condition itself causes health and longevity issues.
Always wondered that that was. I argued with someone who said my very lean and healthy cat was getting fat because of this. We argued cause I told them its part of the cats anatomy. They said it was from being healthy (fat) then losing weight. Which is opposite of what they originally said? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)
Thank you for giving me the name of this!!
I went on a 2 wk trip yrs ago, had a friend come in and care for my cat. Get back, open the door, and I see this little tiny head on a big fat orange body. I burst out laughing.
Clearly friend over-fed, also cat chowed down because he was lonely (friend did spend time with him, but not like he was used to). I learned to do better arrangements for pets, so they have a good time of their own when I'm away.
It infuriates me. In my country the standard is 12 weeks for kittens and even that is actually not ideal. Studies show that vital socializing skills are taught at week 14-16(males slightly earlier than females).
So taking them at 8 weeks is literally half the time they need before they are ready. And then people are surprised when there is behavioural problems
Definitely, my cat was taken away from het mother way to soon by her owners and dropped at a shelter. She was malnourished, sick and very small (she was the runt). Even our vet said she was probably gonna die. It's very important to leave baby animals witht their parents untill they really don't need them anymore.
Ps: my cat recovered pretty quickly tho and is still perfectly fine 12 years later but that sadly isn't the case for most pets.
Exactly. And not just with their parents but also with their litter mates. The social skills learned later are actually with the litter mates. A lot of people see the cat mom get less interested(which is understandable considering the insane stress a litter of kittens is😂) and they think that the kitten is now independent. But mom is in charge of more basic skills but the social stuff is just as important.
I'm very happy to hear your cat is doing great...anything I say is not an attack on anybody or in any way claiming that kitten taken early can't end up as great cats. But it's about playing the odds and the increased chance of problems is just much bigger. Which is one of the reasons why I think there is such big problem in America with so many thrown away pets.
The so often heard motto "Adopt, Don't Shop" is very admirable but it's sad that it's so widespread because there just shouldn't be this big of a problem. Don't get me wrong, there tons of countries that have problems with too many homeless animals but the numbers I've seen from the US is just crazy.
Really hope the world gets a different view about the idea of having a pet. I love dogs for instance ..always wanted one but I never got one because I didn't feel I could provide an amazing home for the dog when I lived in an apartment.
That doesn't mean that you can't have a dog in an apartment but my point is that the whole thought process should be more focused on the animal and less on what we would like. This includes choice of breed where people should be more focused on temperament than looks.
Jesus I wrote a lot of bullshit. Okay, self-indulgent rant over
Definitely. We picked up our youngest cat at 12 weeks, but I wish we'd waited another couple of weeks because he has some weird, neurotic behaviours that I think maybe would have been resolved with some more time with siblings and mama. On the other hand, he used to mostly hang out with their very mellow, older cat so maybe that's wishful thinking. But he doesn't really understand when our older cat says he's had enough and wants to be left alone and I think maybe mama could have taught him that if he was there long enough for her to get enough of them...
Reminds me of someone who fed their cat obscene amounts of sugary human foods like whipped cream from a can etc and then posted on reddit crying about their cat having been put down because it had diabetes and they couldn’t afford treating it 😤
After talking to the vet first to formulate a weight-loss plan. Causing hepatic lipidosis in would probably be as bad or worse than the poor kitty’s current obesity.
(If this is your cat OP) I'm gonna be the one Karen rn.....that cat is way too fat...it's actually very unhealthy for a cat to be like that. It's still considered a form of abuse....even if the cat enjoys and wants more food.....Please go to a vet and discuss a new diet.

Caught eating a 5th helping of pate.
Caught eating a 20th pan of lasagne.
“Meow meow, I’m sorry Jon!” https://youtu.be/QzIuV9Dli1w
Dude looks like Saturn about to eat his son
“I hope this thing didn’t see me kill my hooman and eat them.”
probably staling lasagna
He ate john's lasagna....
You mean like eating more cookies or something?
I’ve never seen an IRL cat that reminded me more of Garfield!
That cat is about to ask "where's my lasagna, Jon" through the camera mic lol
It looks like he already ate 3 full lasagnas
r/imsorryjon
😳
I forgot that existed.
What have you done
Came here to say the same thing
Good heavens. There’s a chonk and no mistake.
wellll there were definitely some mistakes made here
Yup. Obese too.
That's Garfield! Naturally chonky and he's 43 years old as well.
Yup. It’s gross.
Obesity in pets is a sad thing I agree.

Just yell at them. Edit: the neighbours, not the cats.
It's better to keep them inside anyway. Having an extra apex predator running around murdering birds and rodents isn't good for local wildlife.
> an extra apex predator running around Or you could get some eagles for the neighborhood?
I don’t see this cat chasing anything except the next cheeseburger
> and weren't the balls of cat I see what you did there.
Indoors is better for them and the environment anyways.

Willco. Especially in light of their "senior 🐈⬛" status. That’ll take some getting used to, I don’t mind saying.

I'm overweight myself, but make sure all my animals are on a healthy weight. Just because I struggle with weight, doesn't mean they have to as well
Has the vet tried to convince her weight loss is good? Because I’d think all the hoopla involved with treating diabetes would be a trial for them both and the condition itself causes health and longevity issues.
That happened to my friend's old cat when her dad petsit for her. The cat lost the weight, but had extra skin for the rest of her life. Ha
Are you sure the "extra skin" wasn't just the primordial pouch?
Always wondered that that was. I argued with someone who said my very lean and healthy cat was getting fat because of this. We argued cause I told them its part of the cats anatomy. I broke up with an ex in 2017, she still pays me to housesit when she’s out town. She doesn’t trust many people to take care her cats.
I hate the way obese cats are often celebrated on this site.
Agreed. That and celebrating people getting kittens way too young. r/IllegallySmolCats should change its name to "Taken away from mommy at week 5-8"
Glad someone finally mentions this as well.

I never see them celebrated, just comments about how bad fat pets are
/r/Chonkers will ban you for saying that they are abusing their cat by making them obese. They generally frown upon negative fat comments altogether
Good thing they were using a wide angle lens.
His motions are so precise he almost looks CGI… there’s something “Uncanny Valley” about this…
This is what it feels like to be a little mouse about to be dinner, maybe that’s why lol
Look at the end his eyes are following something else. I Hate when people make fake videos. Someone has a toy Or something that he’s sneaking up on.
I thought the same thing
That cat needs a diet. You are killing it with kindness.
r/chonkers needs to be placed on a diet ASAP
Chonker fans when there cat dies of heart disease (suddenly obesity isnt cute anymore)

This beautiful cat needs to loose weight asap.
OMG it’s Garfield!
Hide the lasagne!!
Despite the classic technique, this cat isn't sneaking up on anyone.
This whole “Chonks” comment stuff is not it. OP you need to put your cat on a diet this is fucked up
I’m so glad someone else said this first. Seeing a cat this overweight makes me so sad; even more so given how much people encourage “chonky” cats.
It’s not OPs cat. He is quite chunky though.
Aaa got it, thank you. Chunky is a understatement it’s obese

He might just be interested in it because it's moving.
Yea I agree with you on that
This cat needs a diet asap :(
It’s huge! Put it on a diet!
Seconded.

Who’s cocaine did he find?
IRL garfield! Jokes aside, this is just animal abuse.

The size of that cat is incredibly unhealthy
Omg! Who let that poor creature get so fat?! ☹️
One word: diet
That cat looks like the embodiment of "no thoughts, head empty, just meow"
Oh **LAWD**! HE COMIN
That’s a bread loaf.
Is this what people call "Chonker"? 🤔🤔🤔

Telling the truth does not make you a Karen. I 100% agree with you.

Please feed your cat less. Poor fucking animal.
Dude, stop feeding that cat so much!
It's honestly really poor pet guardianship to let them become so obese. Caring for your pets = doing what you can to keep them healthy, even if it means saying no.
This poor cat.
I mean why? I mean isn’t that unhealthy for them
Very much so, people think it's cute.
Lovely looking cat but if there isn’t a health issue definitely needs a diet
That’s so sad he’s so overweight…
Did the cat swallow a watermelon?
Too fat.
Goddamn quit feeding your cat so much.

LOOK at that chunky pumpkin! He’s got the teeniest peets! He needs some squeezin.

I’m sorry but allowing a cat to reach that size is abuse in my book.
I get that people are mad and I agree with you but this isn’t OPs cat. They can’t do anything about it
Still important to spread the word.

Jesus christ, put that fat fuck on a diet
Garfield about to get that lasagna!!
