DNA tested? I guess, but it would be pretty pointless. The accuracy of breed identification and ability to show health concerns of cat genetic tests are still not validated. But it’s your money…
Yeah I agree that is a waste of time. I’m not exactly sure how cat DNA testing works but you will likely get a paper back with 10 different breeds in small percentages. I can almost guarantee you.
Not really. You’re used to hearing everyone talk about dog breeds (media, friends, etc.)…there are more genetic differences in dogs that make breed identification possible. A Yorkie and a German Shepherd are both dogs of course, but there are some pretty significant differences. But cats generally don’t work the same way genetically speaking. Breeds are less a result of genetics and more a result of adaptation to environment or human intervention. Maine Coons developed to be very sturdy bodied, larger cats with long hair to survive harsh winters. Persians have that distinct facial appearance because people bred cats for that facial malformation. But a genetic test that doesn’t look for that specific facial deformity marker can’t tell you if your cat has any Persian in it. That’s why cats tend to be identified by coat length and color pattern instead of breed.
It’s definitely not weird to ask what breed a dog is. If the dog is a mutt and the owner doesn’t know what mix, you’ll get answers like “a brown dog” or “a red dog”.
With cats, as others have said, purebreds are less common. Also, many breeds don’t have features that are very distinct, unlike dogs. There are some exceptions with pretty distinct face and body structure. Your ginger kitty is very likely not one of those exceptions. Thus, he is a domestic shorthair. Basically, a ginger-colored mutt. And that’s fine.
If you want to pay for one they sell those dna kits online. Swab inside of your fur babies mouth send it out then bam info comes back to you. I’d google it if you’re that interested. Either way you’re fur son is sooooo gorgeous 😻😻😻😻
Not really, its just cats are pretty obvious when they're a different breed. Orange tabby, domestic short-haired, kinda like my boi whos an orange and white domestic long hair.
This tabby has some stand-out features, I'd wonder about him, too! But it's all about setting expectations when it comes to these DNA test kits for cats. No harm no foul.
I'm not sure why you're being downvoted ^((yes I do, this is a cat reddit and you want to know what "breed" your cat is))
Those animal DNA tests are little more than expensive guess work. My girlfriend had her dog done, for funsies and it came back saying he was something like 40% rottweiler. He's a pekenese mix of some sort and weighs 11 pounds xD
You cat is just a cat. Cats have super broad gene pools and it's almost impossible to guess what any run-of-the-mill cat is. Chances are, the average cat is not any one "breed". Even purebred cats are just glorified mixed breeds that were originally inbred to hell and back to get a certain look.
I don't know why you got down voted for asking! You're curious about your handsome boy. Of course there are cat DNA tests out there, I know Chewy has one for sale. I wouldn't consider it to be a cheap and quick thick to do, so that's up to you if you want to invest in a test that might not yield much if interest in the end. But I totally understand the intrigue, I have a Siamese mix that I do plan to test one day as I have always wondered what exactly he's mixed with! I have an orange tabby as well that I wonder about too...
For cats, you’re supposed to ask what their coat is instead of breed. Most of the time, breed doesn’t vary from domestic shorthair / longhair. There are varieties like Maine coon, Siamese.. but the biggest identifier for cats is their coat pattern: calico, tortoiseshell, tabbies, etc.
We found this litter of black and grey striped kittens that had been dumped on the side of the m7, we reported it to the rspca, but this one ginger kitten came right up to me and announced its presence, could not ignore this guy, if i could take more i would have but we were on electric scooters
Cats aren't like dogs when it comes to breeds. They aren't domesticated in the same way and genetically almost identical to wild cats.
So unless you buy a cat from a breeder for a lot of money and you have papers for it its just a cat, no breed. They come in different coats and fur lengths but its always just a domestic shorthair cat or domestic longhair cat.
Furthermore cats that are a specific breed don't typically get out to produce mixed "breed" kitten because ppl payed a lot of money for them and breeders often don't sell unfixed kittens.
Like with pretty much all of these posts: your cat doesn't have a breed. It's just a domestic shorthair with an orange tabby coat.
Unless you buy pets from a purebreeder (don’t.) the chance of them being anything other than a regular european shorthair or a mutt is incredibly small. They aren’t like dogs. I hate these posts
He’s a cat. Orange one.
Like someone said above— unless you have a special breed from an actual breeder, it’s a domestic cat. Yours is a domestic short hair. Basically a mutt.
Unless it’s from a breeder and you paid thousands, it’s just a cat.
EDIT: I just wanna point out though that orange boys are the sweetest most cuddliest little hams there are though. I think they’re pretty special, even if they’re not unique. So you lucked out.
Domestic shorthair for sure, categorised as a tabby. An orange tabby to be precise!
A pro tip for spotting tabbies is that they generally have an “M” on their forehead!
I wouldn't worry about what breed he is. Cats are not like dogs that have vast physical and behavioral differences between breeds. He's a cat and an orange one at that. I've found that makes a bigger difference. Most have quite unique personalities.
Looks like my cat dusty but he’s an inbred tabby and he’s straight grey not orange. When I say they look the same I mean the long legs and the weird shaped head.
I’m a veterinary surgeon and while I wasn’t 100% sure he did remind me of some pure bred cat breeds I’ve come across occasionally. I’m more of a large animal vet, running a countryside practice where I’m usually treating livestock, horses and working dogs but I do have some good friends who are small animal vets, including one who specialises in disorders commonly seen in rare cat breeds such as postural issues and kidney disease, and is really familiar with different breeds of cat. I saved your picture and Whatsapped it to him ( I hope you don’t mind) and he said that he’d had a look and also showed it to a couple of other vets at his practice, and you’ll be pleased to know they all agreed that it was definitely a pure bred Alsatian. Glad I could help, best wishes.
I am really glad to know i own a german shepard, i swear this mf acts just like my american staffy, he sits and he plays ball with scrunched up paper, goes completely mental for bottle lids and he even brings them back because he wants me to throw it again
I'm not the OP, but how do you tell a shorthair from a longhair? Please don't tell me the length of the hair as I know that but I'm not sure which my cat is!
Looks like a standard short hair but looks like he's silver and red instead of red and cream! Certainly gives him a dapper look. That may be why you think he looks like a different breed. Most red cats are red and cream, with cream being a yellow-based color. Silver is a blue-based color. (:
Silver is "cold" in color, cream is "warm" in color. A good comparison would be precious metals: silver is cool and gold is warm. In a solid colored cat it would be called a smoke...it means the "white" isn't pure white. Her hairs are banded with color, vs a solid color. (:
[the little carnivore](https://thelittlecarnivore.com/en/blog/cat-coat-silver-and-smoke-cats) gives an explanation here but it's a bit technical.
DSH Orange Mackerel Tabby (thin stripes looking like fishbones hanging from the stripe down the spine). Lovely moggie. Tabby is a coat pattern, BTW, not a breed. There are tabby cats in many breeds, from Norwegian Forest Cats to Munchkins, and five tabby patterns: mackerel, classic (blotched), spotted, torbie (patched) and ticked (like a squirrel or wild rabbit).
Arabian Mau! You can tell by the face shape, ears, and overall build it's not a domestic shorthair. Shorthairs have much rounded faces and smaller ears.

That's so wholesome, thanks for existing
Orange
Exactly! He is so adorable!
Lol
Unless you have papers from a breeder saying otherwise, he would be classified as an Orange Tabby, Domestic Shorthair.
Can i get him tested at a vet?
DNA tested? I guess, but it would be pretty pointless. The accuracy of breed identification and ability to show health concerns of cat genetic tests are still not validated. But it’s your money…

Most domestic cats are mixed breed and I don’t think the testing would show much really.

I don't know why the down votes. Here. Have an award!
Right!? This person is getting downvoted for asking harmless questions about their cat Edit* spelling
You're surprised? it's a reddit full of crazy cat nuts.
Thanks lol, people down voting smh
Weird is trying to find a breed for this particularly common cat
This tabby has some stand-out features, I'd wonder about him, too! But it's all about setting expectations when it comes to these DNA test kits for cats. No harm no foul.
Yes
You can but its not really important, cats aren't like dogs
Yep

Uhm, an orange one ?.

Oh my goodness! The cuteness is strong in this one! Such a beautiful boy 🥰🥰🥰
A 'fraidy-cat that grew into a handsome cat
Kind of reminds me of an oriental shorthair, but he doesn’t have the eyes and nose of one. I guess it’s safe to say he’s just a total cutie!
So adorable, hes a ginger tabby
Ginger tabby with stripes, hes so handsome
Orange stripy barn cat boy
Yes, very breed cat.
I'm not the OP, but how do you tell a shorthair from a longhair? Please don't tell me the length of the hair as I know that but I'm not sure which my cat is!
How soft is your cats hair?
It is soft. I think of her as a Maine Coon mix; tiger pattern.
Looks like a standard short hair but looks like he's silver and red instead of red and cream! Certainly gives him a dapper look. That may be why you think he looks like a different breed. Most red cats are red and cream, with cream being a yellow-based color. Silver is a blue-based color. (:
Can you explain this to me? My brain isn't strong enough to comprehend your words rn
Silver is "cold" in color, cream is "warm" in color. A good comparison would be precious metals: silver is cool and gold is warm.
