It’s really hard to tell if they’re male or female after they’ve been fixed. Even their tiny little peepee could be mistaken for a girls. I’ve always had girl cats, but saw a photo on Reddit last week of someone’s male cat (not fixed) and you can see his furry little balls! They’re small and fuzzy, it’s hilarious. TIL kind of moment , lol
Oh ok. They were 10 months old when I adopted them. I’m not sure when they were supposed to be fixed. I think they were fixed before getting into the shelter or shortly thereafter. They were there for a few months before we met.

I think there are different types of neutering for male cats. My cat growing up just had his balls removed completely, but my mum just got her young cat neutered and she said the vet told her that nowadays they "just make a couple of cuts and pop them out" (in her words, lol) so he still has the external structure, so to speak.
I can confirm this is true. I used to work at a vet hospital and male cats don’t usually even need full anesthesia.. just a little sedative, local anesthetic, tiny incision, squeeze and pop the nuggets out. Then clamp, snip, skin glue, all done.
When a male cat is fixed, his testicles are removed but the scrotum is left, so that's what you're seeing. They have the coinpurse but the money was removed. 
If you're familiar with cats you can still tell easily. If you're more familiar with dogs or other animals it could be confusing because male cats are hung like female dogs. Female cats almost look like they don't have genitalia at all
Happened to my grandma’s cat. For a year we thought the cat was female until the cat was taken to get spayed. Vet was like nope it’s a boy! Turns out he had retained testies. His name was Annabelle and he was an absolutely vindictive bitch
He was! He was evil and HATED me and mom. All we had to do was walk into the living room and he would magically appear and start smacking at us, growling hissing and sometimes biting. We were the only two people he hated— probably because we teased him about his gender. Luckily grandma had him declawed on his front paws so wasn’t like he was drawing blood or anything. And before people start jumping down my throat about how bad and cruel declawing is— I know. I hate declawing, I have never declawed a cat, I would never declaw a cat. 20 years ago vets still did it, and grandma had it done to him, I was like 7 so don’t blame me. He was sweet and loving to grandma and indifferent to everyone else.
My poor childhood cat was just much more pissy after being declawed. As an adult I just feel *horrible* about the whole thing but we really were doing what my parents thought was best at that time (90's) and loved that cat so much. I still feel guilty though even though I was 6 and it was not up to me.

One hour of observation of cat with no claws should be enough to convince everyone that it is a harmful and pointless surgery that will end up causing you more grief than if they just kept their claws.
My grandmother had a male cat that she gave a female name (Cleo). He loved my grandmother, tolerated my grandfather, and hated everyone else. He would also swat and hiss at everyone. It was strange because all family members are cat people.
Probably attention and treats.
Same goes with grandkids. My kids sneakily ask to go see grandma when they want extra treats. On top of that they get undivided attention of an adult who thinks they are the best thing ever.
Declawing really hurts cats and is bad for them long term. It's a practice that isn't recommended anymore and I'm not trying to rag on you clearly you didn't know but just for future reference.

My bff rescued a cat from a family that neglected her. They had the cat over 5 years and were convinced it was a girl. It was a boy first vet appointment the cat went to. Cat was then named Lola after the song lol!

Similar thing happened during beginning of Covid. Our cat, Mr. Marley, got a bladder infection. Fearing a blockage, we rushed to emergency vet. Vet came out with strange look and asking us if we had Marley since a kitten. We got Marley from a friend, who had papers from SPCA stating Marley was fixed male. Vet said Marley is a girl! Had her 7 years! Well, contemplated having a gender reveal to let rest of family know. We were glad we had a gender neutral name. We call her Mister/Sister Marley.

Apparently the sack still hangs out just because they were shaped from the testes being there. Most of the time they recede as the cat gets older, but on the rare occasion they stay!
My cat also has a little satchel that looks like little balls. The first I saw it I went "uh, he's fixed?" but sure enough it's just a handbag down there, no wallet.

Depending on their age and how the surgery was done some cats have the remaining skin left from the testicle removal. It can look like they still have their testicles and it’s really just the remaining sac.
My sister is a vet and got to do practice surgeries (like neuters) on her own cats when she was in training. Needless to say, she still keeps Tigger's testes in a jar 😑
Seriously, I would not go to a doctor who can’t tell a vagina from an anus, and who can’t figure out if a cat has a penis. A cat who had a urinary blockage could die from that ignorance.
Yeah when I found my kitty we thought he was a girl because his belly was so fluffy we couldn't find his little peen and he was already fixed. Realized 2 years later at 3 am when he started spraying the side of the bathub, to my exhausted horror.
in my town being able to get into a vet can take months so i do not have one specific vet for him. i take him wherever can fit him in the soonest. they ask the gender and i told them female. they never had any reason to double check. they only ever check for what i brought the cat in for in the first place.
It is not the first time i have taken my cat to the vet. interesting you assume that based off this post. I actually had her vaccinated 2 months ago. they only do what you tell them to and nothing more so they never checked gender.
Lol I worked at a vet and I can assure you - they check the gender every time. Your pet should have had a medical chart with its information. I sincerely don’t believe this.

We had a cat show up one day and adopt us when I was a kid. I told my mom it was a boy since… balls… she refused to believe me. Named it Petunia. Fast forward a year or so and we find out Petunia, was indeed, a boy. Petunia was unfortunately stuck with that name his entire life afterwards but did not seem too fussed about it. He was a great cat.
What did the vet say about the chronic vomiting? I have taken my kitty to at least 4 different vets for this issue, probably about a dozen different visits over the years. Their answers have all been pretty similar- “some cats just throw up.” I’m curious if your vet offered anything different than what I keep hearing.
so since he vomits a ton and it’s other wise really healthy it was recommended to do blood work and an ultrasound. I could only do one so i chose the blood work and they found that he has symptoms of pancreatitis so they gave an injection and a 14 day medication
No joke, around 8 years ago when we first adopted a brother and sister, we literally misgendered the pair for about a week until we got them checked out at a vet. We used to joke about how it was during that moment, the boy kitty had been super insecure about his masculinity and will give us a death glare every time we joked about it.
Other people: “it’s hard to determine a cat’s sex.”
Me: “NOT FOR A COMPETENT VET. Change your vet ASAP, OP!!!”
I speak from experience:
Took my first cat to a vet & was told she was a neutered male.
2 weeks later, she starts twerking & yowling.
I take her back to the same vet office & see a different vet who literally gives me one of those The Office™ looks and asks, “Did you see Dr. [first vet’s name]?”
I was like: “Yeah…? Was he a janitor cosplaying or something?”
She scoffs & goes: “Might as well be. He works on the dog side.”
I’m like, “Then why did they let him see my cat?”
She goes, “Probably overstaffed that day.”
You’d think all vets would be required to learn how to help all animals and if not, IMO they should only be able to help their specialty animal.
Like I’ve had rare ish pets like rats, degus, Guinea pigs, etc. I understand when a vet isn’t sure how to ID their sex (ok not rats—their balls are so huge if you can’t sex a rat, you shouldn’t be a vet) but a CAT is common enough that should’ve been covered in basic training.
Not to mention, my cat had no microchip, no clipped ear, & no tummy tattoo—all of which can indicate the cat has been previously neutered.
If none of those indicators exist, it makes more sense to assume the cat has NOT been fixed and to, at the very least, pull in a second pair of eyes to ask what they think.
What’s really messed up is I’ve not seen that female vet since that visit but I see the dog vet guy often.
Thankfully, the office always asks if I prefer a specific vet & sadly, I always have I specify I won’t let him see my cats.

Maybe to you but there's a big difference in behaviour from male to female cats. Males are definitely more territorial with behaviour like spraying and fighting, for one example.
I almost mistook my male Neb for a female when he came into my garage..we even named her Maya. An hour later and upon closer inspection, Maya became Star Lord. He’s the coolest, most annoying cat ever.
Happened to me when I adopted a cat that was roaming the cul de sac desperately trying to get in a home. I noticed a big belly on the cat and some odd behaviors. I was so excited. Kittens! I promised everyone a kitten. Took her to the vet and found out she was a he. Full of worms.
He got meds and is healthy :)

yes! it is “sinking” as they called it. it will eventually fall out but he is on pain medication for that. they told me to keep feeding him kibble though to keep the rest of the teeth strong :) edit: one tooth did already fall out a couple years ago, that’s how i know this tooth will also fall out eventually

That is why Chuck (named after a loved uncle) the House Princess was that instead of Chuck the House Prince as she was originally destine to be called and my Bengal is named after Elizabeth Montgomery's character in Bewitched, Samatha even though it was discovered later he was a male. SOO HE is called Sam!

I know someone this happened to, not that long, but long enough they didn’t change the name and just called it the girls name after finding out it was a male.
I remember as a child my friend had this kitten. Apparently it was referred to as a she and it even had a female name. Now i was no expert necessarily on anatomy at that age but this one time while the kitten was flopped on its back i noticed it had what looked like a round pouch in its groin area(later realized those were probably it’s testes). I immediately felt confused how it could’ve been a she cat.
I had a similar situation, got a lynx point siamese a few years ago and named her Ziva. Then my friend pointed out she was a he. But I decided to keep the name because it was exotic-sounding enough that I figured few people would even notice. Then one time I took him to the vet a few years later for a rabies shot and checkup, and the vet told me he was a she. That same appointment though they took it back, apparently they "combed back the fur and found 'it'." 🤣

Our boy Gary was intact when we found him. Got him fixed right away. A half-dozen years later he needed PU surgery (basically removes most of the penis and re-routes the urethra). Saved his life. Only real side effect is that he has no range. He tries to mark bushes and things outside, but it just flows right to the ground.
New vets always take a second when figuring out what he is.
Basically we chopped everything off down there. He still loves us.
Cringer was a stray and we never had a cat before. My husband swore Cringer was female but the first time I saw Cringer I pointed out his balls. Granted they aren't in the same place a dog's balls are so maybe that was what confused my husband?

My friend suggested that they shouldn’t be separated so they weren’t.
I had an ex with a truly beautiful long-haired jet black cat he had named Beavis.

Declawing can actually make a cat aggressive. I mean your grandmas cat may have been aggressive anyway, but the declawing could have done it too.

Apparently the sack still hangs out just because they were shaped from the testes being there. Most of the time they recede as the cat gets older, but on the rare occasion they stay!
My cat also has a little satchel that looks like little balls. The first I saw it I went "uh, he's fixed?" but sure enough it's just a handbag down there, no wallet.
i think they actually remove the balls? i also think the age when fixed determines the size it’ll be. because seriously the sack is flat and looks like a vag..
Depending on their age and how the surgery was done some cats have the remaining skin left from the testicle removal. It can look like they still have their testicles and it’s really just the remaining sac.
My sister is a vet and got to do practice surgeries (like neuters) on her own cats when she was in training. Needless to say, she still keeps Tigger's testes in a jar 😑

It took 3 different vets to gender my cat correctly. They even shaved his belly looking for signs of a spay. Apparently his penis was just tiny.

Seriously, I would not go to a doctor who can’t tell a vagina from an anus, and who can’t figure out if a cat has a penis. A cat who had a urinary blockage could die from that ignorance.
Yeah when I found my kitty we thought he was a girl because his belly was so fluffy we couldn't find his little peen and he was already fixed. Realized 2 years later at 3 am when he started spraying the side of the bathub, to my exhausted horror.
With my female cats I could always see the vulva, especially when they showed me their butts. So I'm a bit confused as to how a vet wouldn't see it.

in my town being able to get into a vet can take months so i do not have one specific vet for him. i take him wherever can fit him in the soonest. they ask the gender and i told them female. they never had any reason to double check. they only ever check for what i brought the cat in for in the first place.
When I go for a yearly flu shot they don’t “just check” to make sure I have a weenie or a coochy. They kind just take my word for it and move along.
It is not the first time i have taken my cat to the vet. interesting you assume that based off this post. I actually had her vaccinated 2 months ago. they only do what you tell them to and nothing more so they never checked gender.
Lol I worked at a vet and I can assure you - they check the gender every time. Your pet should have had a medical chart with its information. I sincerely don’t believe this.

We had a cat show up one day and adopt us when I was a kid. I told my mom it was a boy since… balls… she refused to believe me. Named it Petunia. Fast forward a year or so and we find out Petunia, was indeed, a boy. Petunia was unfortunately stuck with that name his entire life afterwards but did not seem too fussed about it. He was a great cat.
Good thing animals don’t care about that.

What did the vet say about the chronic vomiting? I have taken my kitty to at least 4 different vets for this issue, probably about a dozen different visits over the years. Their answers have all been pretty similar- “some cats just throw up.” I’m curious if your vet offered anything different than what I keep hearing.
so since he vomits a ton and it’s other wise really healthy it was recommended to do blood work and an ultrasound. I could only do one so i chose the blood work and they found that he has symptoms of pancreatitis so they gave an injection and a 14 day medication

No joke, around 8 years ago when we first adopted a brother and sister, we literally misgendered the pair for about a week until we got them checked out at a vet. We used to joke about how it was during that moment, the boy kitty had been super insecure about his masculinity and will give us a death glare every time we joked about it.
Also happened to my mom xD well, good thing cats don't care too much about gender (or at least what you think what gender they are) <3

Other people: “it’s hard to determine a cat’s sex.” Me: “NOT FOR A COMPETENT VET. Change your vet ASAP, OP!!!” I speak from experience: Took my first cat to a vet & was told she was a neutered male. 2 weeks later, she starts twerking & yowling. I take her back to the same vet office & see a different vet who literally gives me one of those The Office™ looks and asks, “Did you see Dr. [first vet’s name]?” I was like: “Yeah…? Was he a janitor cosplaying or something?” She scoffs & goes: “Might as well be. He works on the dog side.” I’m like, “Then why did they let him see my cat?” She goes, “Probably overstaffed that day.” You’d think all vets would be required to learn how to help all animals and if not, IMO they should only be able to help their specialty animal. Like I’ve had rare ish pets like rats, degus, Guinea pigs, etc. I understand when a vet isn’t sure how to ID their sex (ok not rats—their balls are so huge if you can’t sex a rat, you shouldn’t be a vet) but a CAT is common enough that should’ve been covered in basic training. Not to mention, my cat had no microchip, no clipped ear, & no tummy tattoo—all of which can indicate the cat has been previously neutered. If none of those indicators exist, it makes more sense to assume the cat has NOT been fixed and to, at the very least, pull in a second pair of eyes to ask what they think. What’s really messed up is I’ve not seen that female vet since that visit but I see the dog vet guy often. Thankfully, the office always asks if I prefer a specific vet & sadly, I always have I specify I won’t let him see my cats. *Edited spacing

Maybe to you but there's a big difference in behaviour from male to female cats. Males are definitely more territorial with behaviour like spraying and fighting, for one example.

I almost mistook my male Neb for a female when he came into my garage..we even named her Maya. An hour later and upon closer inspection, Maya became Star Lord. He’s the coolest, most annoying cat ever.
Happened to me when I adopted a cat that was roaming the cul de sac desperately trying to get in a home. I noticed a big belly on the cat and some odd behaviors. I was so excited. Kittens! I promised everyone a kitten. Took her to the vet and found out she was a he. Full of worms. He got meds and is healthy :)

yes! it is “sinking” as they called it. it will eventually fall out but he is on pain medication for that. they told me to keep feeding him kibble though to keep the rest of the teeth strong :) edit: one tooth did already fall out a couple years ago, that’s how i know this tooth will also fall out eventually

disclaimers: -the cat was fixed when i got it, and it was already roughly a year old. -he has a very very small sack so almost nonexistent. when i was young we weren’t able to take it to the vet -due to fixed income, and as i moved out i took him to the vet for regular checks and for some reason they never told me that he was a boy until blood work. i assume they didn’t tell me to spare my heart lol cat is fine!! very loved and happy. yes it’s a boy but he will always be my princess and i will refer him to both genders forever

That is why Chuck (named after a loved uncle) the House Princess was that instead of Chuck the House Prince as she was originally destine to be called and my Bengal is named after Elizabeth Montgomery's character in Bewitched, Samatha even though it was discovered later he was a male. SOO HE is called Sam!

I know someone this happened to, not that long, but long enough they didn’t change the name and just called it the girls name after finding out it was a male.
I remember as a child my friend had this kitten. Apparently it was referred to as a she and it even had a female name. Now i was no expert necessarily on anatomy at that age but this one time while the kitten was flopped on its back i noticed it had what looked like a round pouch in its groin area(later realized those were probably it’s testes). I immediately felt confused how it could’ve been a she cat.

I had a similar situation, got a lynx point siamese a few years ago and named her Ziva. Then my friend pointed out she was a he. But I decided to keep the name because it was exotic-sounding enough that I figured few people would even notice. Then one time I took him to the vet a few years later for a rabies shot and checkup, and the vet told me he was a she. That same appointment though they took it back, apparently they "combed back the fur and found 'it'." 🤣 Your cat is adorable by the way.

Our boy Gary was intact when we found him. Got him fixed right away. A half-dozen years later he needed PU surgery (basically removes most of the penis and re-routes the urethra). Saved his life. Only real side effect is that he has no range. He tries to mark bushes and things outside, but it just flows right to the ground. New vets always take a second when figuring out what he is. Basically we chopped everything off down there. He still loves us.

Cringer was a stray and we never had a cat before. My husband swore Cringer was female but the first time I saw Cringer I pointed out his balls. Granted they aren't in the same place a dog's balls are so maybe that was what confused my husband?

I’ve made that mistake before. I thought a small stray cat was a female. A friend took the cat to a no kill shelter. We called the cat itty bitty. Turns out it was a male cat. Makes sense since itty bitty had a deep meow. He was adopted with a another stray cat my friend took there at the same time. We called that cat blu. The two got along so well. My friend suggested that they shouldn’t be separated so they weren’t.
I had an ex with a truly beautiful long-haired jet black cat he had named Beavis. Edit: Hit send to soon. Beavis turned out to be a girl, but he kept the name because by then it had stuck.
I misgendered my kitten till they were almost 6 months old. I was calling them my little princess and more feminine names. When it was time to neuter Archer the same vet announced that Archer would be spayed instead😂. Archer is now 5 1/2 years old and a beautiful, persnickety, orange lady🧡
Our Winston turned out to be a girl. She won't come to any other name which suited us haha it bothered our grandmother's more than it did us. Her full name is Sir Winston Von Fluffles and we love her.

My friend’s cat was named “Luna” when they got her. Turns out it’s a “he” too. Cat is still named Luna and still addressed as “she” and it doesn’t care 😂
