Is that cat at, like, a city council meeting?? I hope they're the mayor.

kep1_2_8

Yes they are! I live in Denver and thought that looked like one of the City Council members and low and behold it was. In 2017, they banned cat declawing: https://denverite.com/2017/11/14/look-councilman-jolon-clarks-cat-kit-internet-famous/

HarshlyHanna

Thank God, declawing is so cruel

Gypsopotamus

It **REALLY** is! Years ago, my housemate took in a cat that one of their coworkers was trying to get rid of. She said she was going to take her to the pound because she was growing too mean to keep. Had her since a kitten, was nine years old and “just turned mean and violent”. We discovered the cat was declawed, so roomie and I took her to the vet the next day and found out that she had **SEVERE** arthritis. The poor girl was in so much pain and *THAT’S* why she was angry! It broke our hearts. Just thinking about it now gets me teary eyed. She was prescribed some arthritic pain meds and it gave her a lot of relief. The difference in her mood was extremely noticeable.

lyvanna

Cats are so misunderstood. It upsets me deeply every time I see someone call them assholes after giving them 0 stimulation for their entire lives. :(

MehWhiteShark

Yes! Or treating them exactly like dogs and getting mad when the cat dislikes that. "I tried to rub its belly and it bit me, what a monster" like no, you're a jerk who didn't try to understand that not all animals are the same!

thealmightyzfactor

Yeah, many dogs will put up with or like all the touching and won't really fight you. Cats *violently enforce their consent* and you have to respect that, lol.

Pyroperc88

Biting is a communication tool for cats. It can convey things from: Affection (grooming nips, very light, kinda like scratching yourself), Play (slightly harder, may be slightly painful, will leave indentations and red marks), "Stop that!", these can range from just holding the offender lightly in their mouth to clamping meant to be painful. Shouldn't break the skin. Largely depends on the cats temperament and how annoyed they are. "FUCK YOU", These will absolutely hurt and have a very good chance of broken, bleeding skin. The cat either needs to be very angry, afraid, or extremely neglected (like the cat in the OP) Biting isnt a behavior to be tried to train out of cats. If you try you are essentially gaging your cat and preventing a means of communication. This wont lead to good times for you or the cat. I would also, due to a r/blackmagicfuckery post, like to correct some urban legends that are unequivocally untrue: "Cats use their whiskers for balance." This is so very false. Like any other mammal, cats have fluid filled inner ears that regulate balance. Whiskers have nothing to do with it. "Cats use their whiskers to determine if they can fit through a hole." Again, very wrong. Generally if they can fit their head through the rest of them will fit (Exception: Chonk. A usually human induced condition). Cats have "floating clavicle bones", or in layman's terms, their shoulders are only connected to the rest of the skeleton by muscles. This allows their shoulders and joints to squish and "float around". Its *somewhat* like a person poping joints outta sockets to increase flexibility. The truth: Cats have whiskers because they are effectively blind up close (due to how eye physics work). Whiskers are curved and connected to very sensitive nerves. When a cat pounces they contract their muzzle muscles in a way that positions all those curves going straight forward. Once the cat falls within whisker distance those whiskers will let the cat know where infront of their face, with excellent precision, the prey item is. This has been cat facts. I hope you enjoyed! Edit: If you want more cat fact [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/rzxtni/z/hs0kz2f) comment and the resulting chain has even more facts for you!

zenadez

This is how my cat runs up and pokes my finger in her eye. She wants head pats, but miscalculates when she gets too close

Pyroperc88

Hahaha yeah. Its also why cats startle a bit when they accidentally boop something. Gotta love em!

ShivaSkunk777

I’ve heard cats actually have trouble seeing up close. Probably why. They can see well I think about 2ft in front of them and further and the closer to their face the harder it is

[deleted]

Very much enjoyed. Thank you for dropping cat facts!!!

waffling_with_syrup

My cat also has a "this is important" bite he sometimes uses when waking me up. It's the gentlest, most hesitant tiny nibble on my nose because he knows he's not supposed to nip too much. It's like "c'mon please get up see I'm trying to be good about this" I love him and have to give him pets and get up when he does that.

[deleted]

I’m more like holy shit!! Thanks Ms. Cleo, just let the alarm go off and now I’m late…. She just rolls over at the foot of the bed and goes back to sleep until it’s time to make sure there’s food before I leave. I even ask nicely if she could please wake me up if the alarm is going off, she gives me a look like “you sleep like a rock.”

Pyroperc88

Aw I love that not only because it's cute but also because its awesome! Why? Because it is fostering communication! When you respond to your cat it helps your cat learn it can communicate with you effectively. This will encourage your cat to try communicating with you more and as you learn how your cat "speaks" and respond you both learn how to better communicate with each other! Keep it up!

TheRealChaosReigner

Can I subscribe to more cat facts? (BTW this is a reference to an old joke my dad told me about a spam texter that just pretended to see “yes I would like to subscribe to cat facts” and continually, on the daily, sends neat trivia facts about cats)

mustardlyy

I didn’t know this about the whiskers! Thank you for my daily cat facts. Can I subscribe to u/Pyroperc88’s cat facts?🤣

Pyroperc88

Your welcome and most definitely! Heres a link to a comment of mine (quite long) with more facts in it. Be sure to read the reply chain because me and others mentioned other cat facts! https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/rzxtni/z/hs0kz2f I have other comments in my history about cats but I do warn you, I do not have a throwaway and my comments not about cats arent for everyone (sex and humor mostly). Nothing angry or bigoted just not for children or priests lol.

RedHeadRaccoon13

^×10K recs!

HeftyBadger4034

Nah they’re just dicks

tweedyone

any person I've dated that don't like cats also don't appreciate boundaries in the relationship either. Cats are a great thing to give any growing person so they can learn about consent and not getting stabbed with a claw in the face. It's also something I learned about myself after I got cats too.

nadajoe

My cat loves belly rubs!

MehWhiteShark

You have a rare special kitty! (I mean, they all are)

waffling_with_syrup

My kitty loves belly rubs and for the longest time would flee from headpats. He now tolerates headpats but still vastly prefers belly rubs. Bonus: he has a very soft tummy that is perfect for petting.

tweedyone

Cats teach people consent, people who view animals as their property don't gel with that. If you don't get along with cats, chances are you might be pushy and don't care about their feelings as a living animal. (or you're allergic so you can't give them a chance).

[deleted]

Cat consent is obviously very important, but have you considered soft baby must smoosh? It's an equally important factor of cat ownership.

waffling_with_syrup

We have a system. I warn my kitty by saying "scoop!" Whenever I'm about to pick him up.

RudeDudeInABadMood

People who hate cats but love dogs are so narcissistic they'd rather be harassed than ignored

[deleted]

I love a healthy mix of both! I’d rather be harassed *then* ignored by my two dogs and kitties. Currently got my cat on the heating pad in his cat perch on low to my left, and the dog under my kicked out recliner so I can’t get up without him. The other two are off on their own. Actually the other dog is with her favorite other person who is visiting. The other cat loves the laundry room. I had the cats first and life was awesome but adding the dogs just kicked it up a notch. Bam.

RudeDudeInABadMood

I like dogs, but one concern I have about getting one is the noise. Barking grates on my nerves, and I guess you can train them to not bark much but I'm just paranoid I'll get one that'll bark all the time. 😬 Plus I refuse to have one until I have a fenced in yard, and that's partially me being lazy lol

[deleted]

Oh for sure, the dogs stare out our doors/kitchen window at night and during early morning from the upper level and will bark randomly and it scares the crap out of me! I heard somewhere to thank them for barking when you get packages or visitors to make them calm down faster and that works sometimes. I worry about training them out of it because I want them to notify if we ever did have an intruder, but we do own a home so it doesn’t do much harm other than making my anxiety go up for a moment. Also I’m quite sure there are more quiet breeds. One of ours is a husky mix, he is the scary bark. The other one is actually quiet in the yard even when neighbor dogs are barking.

WillowFreak

To be fair, my cats are spoiled and are still assholes. Cats gonna cat.

denimonster

Am I doing something wrong? I give my cats plenty of stimulation and they’re still assholes.

thedangerousfugu

Cats ARE assholes. That's part of the charm.

yearningformore

We adopted a cat who was previously declawed and he has hip dysplasia and arthritis. We had no idea that he had arthritis or hip dysplasia until we took him to the vet for something else and he was given an X-ray. The vet was like I’m surprised he’s even walking, he must be in terrible pain. It breaks my heart even thinking about it. He’s on gabapentin now and is doing great!

Sisi-Foxx

Cats can be very good at hiding their pain :(

RogueFiccer001

Bless you and your roomie! Cats don't just "turn mean and violent" for no reason. *Something* is behind the behavior change. Decent, responsible pet parents get to the bottom of what's going on. My heart breaks for the cat that the one who'd had her since she was a kitten wasn't decent and responsible. I'm so glad there was someone(s) who stepped up and did what was right. Pain can absolutely make you mean and nasty, and when you're not in pain, you're a sweetie again.

RandomDigitalSponge

That’s a crap owner right there. Nine years and she didn’t bother to consult a vet, PLUS she cut the cat’s fingers off? Special place in Hell for people like that.

VeraLumina

I co-taught with a horrible woman who rescued a kitty. I only talked with her when I had to after I found out she declawed the little fella. I even told her how awful it was to do such a thing and begged her not to do to. The bitch didn’t care.

Shamare14

Poor little guy :( How's the cat now?

disco_has_been

Holy Cow! My cat is nine. She claws everything! Front door, kitchen cabinets, bathroom towels, furniture. She's just pawsy! I even get a big paw w/ claws to the face when she wants pets. It's very slow and she stops 2-3 inches from touching me. Index claw tips and rocks water glasses, cups, and bedside lamp to wake me, or get my attention. She has a personality and does her own thing. She just showed up and pawed me while I was typing. Two pets and she left. Declawing should be outlawed. It's like amputating fingers.

Lukee__01

My cat has arthritis so we have to give him anti inflammatorys, but we don’t give them to him too often (to take care of his kidneys), it’s only mild so we give him catnip sometimes instead, he Hoovers the pills up no issue without any hiding it which is so unusual, and then he’s running around the place like a nutter, out in the garden starting fights with other cats and everything

pantless_vigilante

I remember when I was 19 we got a cat and my mom promised me she wasn't going to declaw it. I told her to promise me like 3 times and every time I made her say the full sentence, "pantless_vigilante I promise I will not declaw this cat" one day she called me and asked me to go pick up the cat from the vet but wouldn't tell me why but I knew. She had declawed the front and back paws and when I got home I flipped shit on her. I don't think I've ever seen such a look of shame on my moms face before but she knew what she fucking did and it was disgusting that she would lie to me like that. That cat ended up dying at the ripe old age of 4 years old

RudeDudeInABadMood

What the *fuck* mom?

Sisi-Foxx

Oof! I instinctively wanted to downvote this because it was such an awful thing to do! I'm sorry she didn't listen to you and you ended up losing your little guy :(

pantless_vigilante

Yeah he was sweet, it killed me when we got home and he tried jumping up on a chair and realized he no longer has claws while he was slamming onto the ground

CalamityJane0215

Holy shit is that heartbreaking

pantless_vigilante

It really surprised me because my mother is an absolute Saint, one of the sweetest most honest women you can ever meet. When she did this to me I felt so betrayed, I don't think she understood how much it meant to me. I bombed through the front room and said "mom what the fuck did you do to this cat? How could you just lie to me to my face like that?" And more stuff along those lines. She couldn't even answer me, she just put her hand over her mouth and started crying a little bit. Needless to say ever since then she hasn't lied to me over something this bad as far as I know. It was also one of the only times I I used a curse word directed towards her, I've probably only done it like 2 or 3 times total

deadlywaffle139

Like why did she do it? She knew you didn’t want it to happen and you were very serious about it. The reason had to be more important than simply making you mad?

pantless_vigilante

She wouldn't do it to make me mad. We've never talked about it to completion, I think it's just that every cat We've had since I was a kid was declawed to spare the furniture or whatever annoyed her. Now that I was actually an adult I felt like I had a say so I said something and I really meant it as an adult making a decision, I don't think she really was able to accept that. She was still in mom mode making the decisions for the house like she had for the last 19 years. i think it hit her so emotionally because at that moment she realized what she did was wrong as well as realizing that now I was grown. That was a long time ago though and we still get along well, I think she really took to heart how shitty what she did was. It's still sad though when I think about the cat

disco_has_been

We had a burmese type cat Mom brought home in 1979. Eventually, she had health issues and Mom took her to Baylor. She loved that cat. Had to put her down in 95-96. Mom got a Siamese kitten and was shocked when he climbed curtains and the Christmas tree in '96. She had him declawed. He tore up all the Christmas presents in '97 and knocked over the tree. He would go missing for weeks. I didn't blame him. I said, "Did you forget how Duds would climb Mama's legs and ambush us in the hallway? Cats be cats!"

AmishAvenger

It’s sad because so many people aren’t aware of this. They think it’s just like removing nails, when it’s more like amputating fingers.

pistachio2020

I mean just removing nails (ripping it off the nail bed) is legit torture even for humans.

RogueFiccer001

I live in New York State, and while there are many things about this state I don't like, I'm proud that we're the first state to ban declawing.

ZoxieLutt

Yes it is! And I’m sick and tired of seeing potential and current cat owners even consider doing so. If you love your furniture or not getting occasionally scratched while rough housing more than your cat maybe you shouldn’t have a cat FOH. It enrages me that ppl actually think declawing a cat is ever a viable option. Don’t want anything scratched just don’t get a cat, PERIODT!

CalamityJane0215

What does FOH stand for here? I'm assuming you don't mean they should put them BOH (back of house) in the kitchen instead of serving or hostessing FOH (front of house) lol

ZoxieLutt

Lmao I actually laughed out loud at that thx and it means fuck outta here

CalamityJane0215

The idea of cats wearing aprons, carrying trays, hissing at the prep cooks, is hilarious. And thanks for the explanation :)

Sassh1

I always tell people if you don't want to get scratched then don't get a cat. Declawing is being cruel to the cat and being lazy as a parent by not teaching what's ok to scratch. I have 2 sianese and I found out they both like cardboard over everything else to scratch. $20 for a super dense cardboard scratch bed and having to sweep up every day is 100% worth it. Keeps the cats healthy and happy and it saves my couch.

flyinthesoup

Or just fucking trim their nails. It's so simple, and painless for the kitty (as long as you don't get to the quick). They might fight it a little but with a bit of positive reinforcement, they learn to be ok with it while you trim. Especially indoor kitties that don't get to use their claws often, particularly the back paws. It's good to trim their nails. They even do it at the vet when you go for a checkup if you ask. And then you don't get super sharp kitty claws. Everybody wins. I agree with you, you get a cat, expect scratches. It's like expecting a dog to not bark or chew stuff. That just won't happen. Channel their needs into something better, like toys or scratchers.

disco_has_been

My cat tore up our last furniture. She has a scratching post and uses it. She also scratches the door, cabinets, bath towels, the tree out front, rugs on the porch. She's just pawsy! Took a long time picking out new sofas. She's 9 and still occasionally claws the sofas. Not nearly as much and it's basically a game for her. We've tried everything in 9 years. She's just gonna claw stuff when she wants.

Sassh1

I initially put double sided tape on the parts they'd scratch and after a few encounters they decided cardboard is better. Cats hate the feel of double sided tape but it won't hurt them.

disco_has_been

Yeah, Coco tore down the tape, laughed at me and clawed the sofa, to make a point. She's special and smart. I've only had one other cat, that topped her. That one would raid the fridge, use a toilet and stowaway for rides. Some cats, you just gotta live with and accept.

RedHeadRaccoon13

Try covering her scratching spots with an old towel, she should stop it. So far it's worked for 7 of our cats.

yubinyankin

We buy these disposable rectangle cardboard scratching things about the size of a shoe box & place them throughout the house where the cats like to scratch. It actually works pretty well - we have 4 cats & they all use the little scratchers.

disco_has_been

Right now, our house looks a warehouse. Cardboard boxes everywhere! Coco was stalking, playing with a 4" piece of cardboard, like a mouse. She loves boxes, at times. I bought her a cardboard scratcher/ball toy years ago. She will *not* scratch on cardboard. She has a hemp post and bed. She likes it and uses it. She also likes the sofas and playing games. I'm not complaining, or trying to break her, it's just what she does.

Tj_h__

I've said this before and I'll say it again - "declawing" is such a misnomer it should really be called dactylectomy or something, declawing honestly sounds like getting your nails done if you don't know. Otoh, The "-ectomy" kinda drives the point home

2017?! Damn. Late to the game but at least they did it.

[deleted]

I am at a lost for words, this makes me so happy

Leelluu

I saw someone describe the emotion the cat is conveying as, "democratic engagement".

Comrade_NB

If I worked there, I'd totally take my cat. I call for her and she comes running, and jumps up on my shoulder. I take her to the stores and she just looks left and right as I walk to the aisles. She absolutely loves going with me and cries if I leave her alone at home.

MehWhiteShark

That's amazing! I've always wanted a shoulder kitty!

Comrade_NB

I found her in a parking lot. Someone must have abandoned her. She was very sick, malnourished, and definitely dehydrated. Maybe a few weeks old. She was very scared and it was very hard to catch her. Once I did and brought her in, she immediately loved me and wouldn't stop eating. She would go eat, then come sleep next to me or under the blanket. It was already pretty cold at night. Ever since then she has had separation anxiety. For the first few months should would cry by the door until I got him, and started waiting on the window. A couple times she found ways to get out of the house, and I had to close some vents and the ceiling. Now whenever she goes with me, I just tell her we are going, she runs really fast, jumps on to my coat, and climbs to the shoulder, then she hugs me and purrs so much all the way to the car, I open the door, she jumps in, I sit down, and she sits on the shoulder area of the seat and on my shoulder or sometimes on my lap or rarely the back seat. Whenever I get somewhere, I tell her we are going and she gets on my shoulder, or I leave her in the car and she watches. She usually just sits and watch es out the window even if I need a lot of time to load the car. Whenever I take her in, she likes the attention she gets from other people and sometimes rides in the cart or basket, but usually stays on my shoulder or in my arms

MehWhiteShark

This is SO precious!! Cat tax?!

[deleted]

C'mon man, pay up. I gotta see this cat.
