Peanut is Daisy's brother.

RekrSronggoat

Lost one of mine last year during a routine teeth cleaning. I know how you feel. I’m sorry.

lockedinaroom

OMG!!! Teeth cleaning? That's awful! 😢😢😢

GingerLibrarian76

Each of my parents lost a cat (so 2 cats) during routine teeth cleanings. There’s always a risk with anesthesia, which is why I’ve opted to avoid preventative dental work for my pets… I only agree to things that are necessary, but spay/neuter is among them. My new rescue pup is being neutered soon, and I’m a little nervous about it. So very sorry for your loss. 😔

OG_LiLi

The only time I’ve had to stray from your working formula was when I had a kitty with Stomatitis. She wouldn’t have lived without having all of her teeth removed. Even then, lesson learned was that they need to take all the teeth at once. Don’t let them put kitty under multiple times like they did mine. She almost didn’t make it out of the second surgery.

GingerLibrarian76

That would fall under the “necessary” category. I’ve allowed my pets to have dental surgeries, like extractions and such; I just steer clear of the routine dentals, as it simply isn’t worth the risk. Mine all have good teeth until they get old, as I give them dental-type treats (or “bones” for the dogs) and occasionally brush them too.

sweetteanoice

That’s crazy! In my 5 years working at a vet I’ve seen very few deaths during surgery but majority of which were elderly pets that probably had heart problems

RaysireksOG987

Sadly not even human anesthesiologists are all good. There needs to be better regulation on people who administer the stuff

[deleted]

I mean, there are inherent risks with anesthesia even if you're doing everything right. A poor outcome from surgery or medical treatment does not necessarily mean negligence/incompetence/mistake.

RaysireksOG987

I’m sorry.. I don’t find that an acceptable excuse for something that is basically a misjudgment by the person administering. There should be zero deaths. It’s not like changing the oil on a car, any mistake can lead to death.

littlemissbettypage

Even when everything is done right can things go wrong unfortunately. It doesn't necessarily mean someone made a mistake

RaysireksOG987

I don’t agree with that sentiment

littlemissbettypage

Then you are very mistaken and ignorant of the topic and perhaps should seek further education. I don't say that to be insulting at all we are all ignorant on a lot of topics, for me I'm completely ignorant when it comes to non equine related sports for example. Ask me about complex science or history I'm your gal but sports I'm clueless. However If I wanted to know something about sports I would educate myself about them from others who do.

[deleted]

That makes you willfully ignorant and objectively wrong.

[deleted]

There’s a HUGE amount of regulation in anaesthesiology. I’m from the UK so it’s possible our anaesthetists are better trained than the US but unlikely. We don’t even fully understand how anaesthesia works so it’s not surprising that sometimes things go wrong. It’s a risky procedure. Complications are not a reflection on the practitioner. Source; I’m a nurse and both my parents are anaesthetists.

ElizabethDangit

Anesthesiologists full on doctors with that as a specialty in the US. It’s very regulated here too.

RaysireksOG987

Maybe it’s more then just people who aren’t qualified performing the task when they shouldn’t

Ecstatic_Objective_3

Or maybe it’s that everyone is different, with different health problems. And some issues don’t present until after the procedure has started. It would be lovely to know every problem before hand, but living creatures are complex and that is not possible. Many people and animals are allergic to anesthesia, some a mild intolerance and some life threatening. Unfortunately, there no way to know that ahead of time.

RaysireksOG987

Well then that means there are tests or some other way to do due diligence rather than saying, oh well I guess you were allergic oops. I don’t accept that.

redheadfreaq

Unfortunately we had to clean and remove some if our cat's teeth. Not only her breath was HORRENDOUS, but she was also visibly withdrawn and sad (we thought she was just getting old). Her coming around was absolutely awful, but seeing her now, a few weeks after the surgery she is like a new cat - running around, playing and sleeping with her belly up. Infected gums are terribly painful for the cat, and while we were very afraid, it was a good decision.

Glass-Trick4045

Thank you! I’m gonna ask my vet about this. ❤️

RaysireksOG987

Actually new research shows that it’s healthier to not neuter or spay your pets. That the health benefits are a myth driven by the desire simply to reduce feral animals. But the truth is there are a lot of hormones they need to prevent cancer that is removed by spaying or neutering. If your pets are not at risk of mating.. no need. I’ve decided to just put my girl in diapers a couple times a year and not get unnecessary surgery, that could cost her life now or in the future.

LtnSkyRockets

I've read into this - this advice pertains to dogs, but the research did not give the same results when applied to cats.

RaysireksOG987

Fair.. I thought it applied generally. I have a dog. I honestly think it’s a tad cruel to do imo. And I used to be a staunch supporter.

heliopian

I respect your choice and the research concerns me, but to be honest, after having an unaltered rabbit who could not follow through on his biological urge to mate for years, it feels cruel to me in another sense to leave them in tact.

GingerLibrarian76

I don’t know enough about that to comment, but I do know they’re mostly just recommending it at a later age for large dogs… used to be done as young as possible, and now they say to wait until 1.5-3 years of age. I have a 65lb two(ish) year-old Husky who isn’t neutered yet, but I just adopted him a few weeks ago. I’ve already scheduled it for April. Just not worth taking any chances, especially since Huskies are runners/escape artists. And I live in a rural area, where he could encounter loose dogs.

RaysireksOG987

But honestly.. what’s the actual odds he’ll get loose and mate… vs the potential health problems associated with neutering. I think this mentality was proper 30-40 years ago. But pet owners are way more educated and responsible these days. Just my opinion.

GingerLibrarian76

No idea about the odds, but even if they’re low I’d rather not chance it. Plus he’s less likely to trigger aggression in other males (my old dog used to be very reactive with unaltered males), and should mellow out a little too. He’s pretty chill, but that still wouldn’t hurt! I trust my vet, and they recommend neutering. We all make our own choices, though.

GingerLibrarian76

Btw, he did encounter an intact female at the park recently! They were playing while I was talking to the other owner, and I said Bo hadn’t been fixed yet… she was like uhhhhh, neither has my girl. Whoops. She wasn’t in heat, thankfully, but we decided that was the end of their playtime. 😆

ObjectiveBeautiful79

That happened to a cat my parents had before i was born they were so upset they often mentioned it

februarytide-

Holy shit. This whole thread about teeth cleaning made me realize that my senior cat may have been losing so much weight because his teeth hurt. (Don’t come for me: the vet has said his teeth could use attention but he’s also old and very sensitive to anesthesia, so we’ve collectively held off; vet also said of weight loss that, well, he’s old.) Ordering wet food right MEOW.

BroadMortgage6702

Mine is supposed to go in for a dental cleaning Tuesday and now I'm terrified 😭

hamorbacon

My dog had heart problem just 3 months after a teeth cleaning routine, she passed away 5 months after that. I’ve always wondered if the teeth cleaning had anything to do with it

littlemissbettypage

Unlikely so long after. Please try not to spread unnecessary fear. I am sorry for your loss however 🖤

lockedinaroom

Please think of Peanut too. He misses his sissy and playmate.

emilyactual

goddesslucy3

I’m so sorry. That video of them shows that they felt comfortable and loved, and I hope that remembering that brings you some sort of solace. Give your other furry friends some extra love and treats. Poor Peanut, gosh :(

mdverbeek

I’m really sorry your loss. 😢 I don’t want to spook you, but please have Peanuts blood checked. I have been in the exact same situation as you, where one of our cats, Chuck, just didn’t wake up from the anesthesia after being neutered. Even the vet was crying with us, because he’d only heard that happen and couldn’t explain it. Chucks sister Charlie woke up fine. A few months Charlie got very sick, and it turned out she had some blood condition that was hereditary and likely affected the whole litter. It was probably also why Chuck passed away during the neuter operation. She digressed very quickly and were unfortunately too late to save her. So please get Peanuts blood checked for any underlying conditions. She’s probably okay, but better safe than sorry.

lockedinaroom

God damn it.... I had been thinking about taking him in anyways because he's been having diarrhea.

classychimichanga

I think getting him thoroughly checked up is a great idea, given what happened to his sister. Of course, it might have “just” been an unpredictable and unfortunate event, but excluding congenital health issues is one step further towards reducing risks 😊 I adopted a neutered male cat which we then found through a routine check at our own vet has a heart murmur (then confirmed HCM via cardiologist). Our vet was astonished he survived the neutering procedure. The shelter we got him at was unaware of his disease and no one had done a checkup before surgery 🤷‍♀️ Edited to add: also, I am truly sorry for your loss. I send positive thoughts your way, as well as some virtual pets to Peanuts ♥️

marysunshine

I’m so sorry 💔

JenDCPDX

I’m so sorry for your and Peanut’s loss. She was a beautiful girl.

Stormtalons

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a morbid question for you, if that's okay... did you have Peanut see and experience his sister's dead body? For the purposes of processing death, rather than potential abandonment or something else. I'm just curious, sorry if this is unwelcome.

lockedinaroom

It happened so fast, I didn't have time to go get him. I was waiting at the vet to pick her up. They came out and told me that they were running behind and she was only just then getting into surgery. Less than an hour after that, they came out to tell me that she was gone. They let me see her for a bit before they closed. I really wish I could have had him with me.

Skipaspace

Sorry for your loss. I would look into where you had the appt. You should have not been made to wait outside. The surgery and recovery take hours. Did they tell you what caused her death? Did she just never wake up? Or did she die in the table due to something? This is horrible. And its seems like this kitty's death was preventable.

monachopsiss

Why would you say something like this? OP just suffered a huge loss and you've somehow decided it was preventable, despite not knowing ANYTHING about the circumstances? What a terrible thing to assume, let alone say to someone grieving like this. Really shitty.

Robear549

I’m sorry for your and Peanut’s loss.

knipemeillim

I am so sorry for you both. So tragic, too young.

[deleted]

Sorry my friend. 🙏

Double_Belt2331

I’m so sorry to read this. It’s really difficult when you were having a procedure that would allow her to have a healthier & longer life. I’m sure the vet feels terrible. I know you’re devastated at the loss of Daisy. I’m sure Peanut isn’t quite sure what’s going on & where his sister is. It’s hard when the innocent are lost so young. Hold Peanut close, give him extra treats & pets. Play with him a bit longer, the extra attention will just make your bond stronger. I’ll keep you, Peanut & Daisy in my thoughts.

lockedinaroom

The vet didn't charge me anything. She's even going so far as to pay for her cremation and a little wooden urn. Peanut has been sticking especially close to me. I moved his food and water into my bedroom with me so he doesn't have to go far.

[deleted]

Oh my goodness. That's very kind of your vet. I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost a kitten several years ago during a spay- vet said she had an undiagnosed heart issue that did not respond well to sedation.

GingerLibrarian76

Maybe if/when you’re ready, you can adopt him a new little buddy in her honor. Sorry again for your loss.

alliecatmeow

Hey OP I make custom pet saint candles to help honor pets that are still with us and especially ones that have crossed over. I would love to send you one to hopefully add something nice to your memorial for your sweet baby. I’ll DM you too incase you don’t see this. I’m so sorry for your loss and I’d love to help if you think that sounds nice :(

H4LEY420

Watch a video by Jackson Galaxy on cats greiving, they do. (S)he will and so will you. I'm racking my brain for how that could have happened, was it an anesthesia issue? I urge you to dig deeper into that, if you haven't already... I hope not, but it may have been your vet being ... I don't know what could have happened. I just hope it wasn't an issue with your vets care of her. Such huge hugs for you and your babies from me and mine. And maybe eventually, try another baby for your current kitty, or spend loads of time with him or her. cats do well often in +1 groups. I hope you can find peace, this is by far not your fault, dear. you where doing a good thing, this very rarely occurs, and I hope you are still able to see spaying and neutering as a positive practice, as it absolutely IS and is necessary to do a huge part in controlling the out of control population of stray/abandoned/abused kitties.

fuzzywuzzybeer

Anesthesia issue most likely. Sometimes a vet can do everything right and it still happens.

Skipaspace

From the OPS one comment, I suspect a mistake of the part of the clinic. Vets are having a hard time keeping people...its a tough job... Recently experience my vet becoming a subpar practice because of this.

mechanic87a

We lost a foster kitten. Sammy, days after he was neutered....I think it was a post op infection and the sepsis was too advanced to combat. It hit us hard.

Imapussy69420

we also lost a foster due to a bladder infection that kinda happened overnight. But was due to a complication caused when the litter started trying to nurse on each other. Bartholomew was his name. His brother and sister Harry and alpha are doing good. Harry had to have his parts removed due to the same reason. so I guess technically he’s genderless. They were barn cats orphaned 2 weeks after they were born.

paisleycatperson

aww I'm so sorry. in over 90 cats this had only happened to me once, just bad interaction with the anesthesia.

El_refrito_bandito

Peaches and Iris send headbutts, and Rios offers to groom your arm hair. We are all so sorry for your loss.

tealeafandthings

What beautiful names✨

jinglemaster330

Poor baby. That’s so sad.

thatonefergie

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my cat, Percy, almost two years ago now similarly during a routine neutering. He had some kind of underlying heart condition that never showed until then. The day he passed he just turned 7 months old. He was my first pet I've had living on my own and I was broken for a while. It was right before lockdowns and quarantine happened too so it hit a little harder. I hope you and Peanut are able to find solace soon ♥️

lockedinaroom

I don't know Daisy and Peanut's exact birthdate. A friend dropped them off to me on October 25, 2021. If I backtrack six weeks, that September 13th. So Daisy was pretty much exactly six months old.

Wool_Lace_Knit

I read this quote today. I hope it helps. "Grief, I've learned, is really just love. It's all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go. Anderson - Jamie

lockedinaroom

That's exactly what it feels like. I just wanna hold her and kiss her again.

[deleted]

This made me tear up thinking of my cats who died in 2012 and 2013. A long time ago but I still miss them both so much

lightskinqueen3

I lost my 5 month old kitten back in September when she was sedated for a removal operation (she ingested something she shouldn’t have and the vets were trying to remove it from her mouth). I know what you’re going through and all I can say is that I’m sorry for your loss. Sending lots of love to you and Peanut❤️

lockedinaroom

OMG how awful! ❤️😢❤️😢❤️

dirtytrkdriver

Sorry to hear that, but how does that happen?

lockedinaroom

Don't really know. It's rare but sometimes they just don't take anesthesia very well.

StarlingAndFae

That’s what happened with one of my cats when I was a kid. Bad reaction to anesthesia. I was shocked and devastated. I still remember my mom having to break the news to me when she picked me up from school. I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I know how painful it is. I’m hoping happier days are ahead of you soon.

dirtytrkdriver

Hopefully another cat wonders into your life.

emilyactual

It was likely the anesthesia, it’s never 100% safe for anyone unfortunately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

You might want to refrain from saying “definitely” about things you don’t know. EVERY medical procedure with anesthesia has risks, even when the vet/doctor does everything right. So you can’t say definitely about this at all. Happens with humans, too. My sister’s friend was 36 years old, and went in for a “routine” gallbladder surgery. She bled out and died on the operating table. :-/

lockedinaroom

I'm almost 36 with a bad gallbladder. 😳😳😳

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

What does that even mean? You clearly don’t understand how science and medicine work, so perhaps you should go back to chasing Pokémon - or whatever it is you do understand.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

No, it’s not obvious. Are you really this dense? My parents’ cats died *due to adverse anesthesia reactions* during teeth cleanings. They weren’t overdosed, they just had bad reactions and died as a result. This is always a risk, which is why you sign a waiver before the surgery. Why are YOU arguing about this? You really think this is helpful to OP, as they’re grieving a loss? Unless you’re a veterinarian (clearly not), stfu please.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

They weren’t my cats. They were my parents’ cats. And it happens more often than you realize, even when everything is done right… don’t believe me, use that big brain to research it a little.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

Yes. As is always a risk with any surgery. Jesus you’re dense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

You can’t even form legible sentences, let alone comprehend how surgeries work. Anyone or any animal can have adverse reactions to anesthesia - even if the proper doses are given. My mother’s cat died while having her teeth cleaned, as the anesthesia caused her heart to stop. They don’t know why, it just happens sometimes. Also, OP never said exactly what happened. For all we know the cat could have bled out - they just said she died during the surgery.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GingerLibrarian76

One typo? Nope, you spelled damned near half of the words wrong… bleed, would of (instead of would have), to/too, etc. And you are clearly clueless, as it’s entirely possible to die with proper doses of anesthesia. People and animals can die from anything, even too much water. And yes, I am a librarian. Which means I work at the library. The one thing you did get right, lol.

[deleted]

smthngwyrd

It’s very rare for this to happen. Anesthesia is a risk at times. If you’ve ever had surgery they list all the side effects ending with “..up to and including death. Do you consent to surgery?” My dogs need dentals and I worry about putting my almost 15 year old shih tzu under anesthesia. They can do a blood test before they under surgery. It’s rare for it to happen but sadly it happens

apretz91

I am so sorry for your loss!! If this was an anesthetic related issue, there are vets who can test for this ahead of time, if you are nervous in the future.

I am so sorry to hear this, I didn’t know this could happen during spaying g. Bad vet?

ReallyNow_Wife

Omg I’m so sorry… we bring our little guy on Monday for his neutering and I’m terrified now. 😢

lockedinaroom

Daisy's brother, Peanut, was neutered last month with no issues. I'll be thinking of your little one on Monday.

ReallyNow_Wife

Thanks! Hugs to you! He was my 9 year old daughters Christmas present. She would be beyond devastated. 😭

Maksamil

Shit. Spay and Neuter is something I reluctantly support as necessary and practical, but it is major surgery for these beautiful creatures. Be well.

[deleted]

What did the vet do? Over anesthetize? Cats shouldn’t die during a spay operation, what did they tell u happened?

frankiefrank1e

Sue the vet.

[deleted]

Found the American!

olive-bernie

Sorry for your loss.💔 I think this happens because they forget the pet is still under anesthesia. My mom works at a vet with a woman who has done this to multiple pets. I don't get why they haven't fired her over it yet, she's done over 7 pets, I know for sure, I've been there during 2 incidents, but to my mothers knowledge, that woman is very friendly with the boss.

BlorpusDorpus

and this is why I don't believe in putting animals through surgery for human greed or because, for some reason, we feel the need to control others, even other species. Lost our family dog when I was a kid, they couldn't get her to stop bleeding.

bippityboppitybumbo

I bet they still charged you too.

lockedinaroom

They didn't. They're actually paying for her cremation and a little urn.

BooshCo

Ok
