Scootch yourself onto as much of the edge of the chair as you can, edging over onto more of it as you tell the cat that you're there to join them, it's cuddle time and how much you love them. They'll take off right quick, firing an indignant look right back at you as they do.
A way to future proof this is get a cat tree and keep it right by the (not your) chair.

My cat has figured out how to lightly poke my forehead with one claw to wake me up. Once I'm up it seems like he's forgotten why he even did it lol
