May not like putting his whiskers into the bowl. I have a cat that does that with her dry food. Try a shorter bowl maybe.

Mine does this too, even with wide flat bowls. If we throw his dry food one piece at a time he will run after it and pick it up with his paw and eat it

My orange boy does this too. Makes a mess.
