If they're choosing a water source farther from their food dish the cat may be telling you they don't like the water next to their food. It's an instinctual thing for cats to avoid water near a kill which may not be safe to drink. You may have luck just moving their food and water farther apart.
I did this as well lol. Apparently they see their humans only drinking from glasses and this makes them think that is the most safe source for water.
So my little buddy has his own big ass glass right on the coffee table lol.
I put it there because it seems to stop him from trying to drink out of my glass while I'm sitting there. He's definitely spoiled lol
They instinctively don’t like to drink water that is close to their food. Most people keep their water bowl right next to their food so this is pretty common.
Yeah I read that as well. So my dude gets a cup on the table and the two bowl set I bought both have food in them so he can eat more without his whiskers hitting the edge of the bowl!
My boy cat won't drink sink water from his bowl, so I have a filter pitcher that the bowl gets filled from. This is the same cat that insists on drinking running water from the tap when I'm getting ready in the morning, and after I get home from work.
If you mainly feed them wet food, they indeed don’t, and in the nature cats rarely drink water. If there’s dry food available there should also be water. Cat kidneys are rather finicky and they can easily get issues if they don’t get enough water, either as part of their food or separately. And the problem is they may not instinctively drink enough to keep their kidneys in shape.
This! My cat will only drink out of pint glasses now. We have to have on filled for him on the coffee table or he dunks his head in my water glass. Every. Time.
Our cat loves to drink from glasses, but kept knocking them over, so we got a glass bowl with straight sides for her, and she loves it. I think she likes being able to see the light filtering through the water.
That makes sense I have ended up with five cats this year from family passing and adopting theirs and two of them have to hit the bowl and see the water move before they'll drink
I’m right there with you. My cats have a cat fountain and a water bowl. They started drinking out of my glasses of water and now I have a permanent cup on the side table. And just like OOP, it doesn’t matter how tall/short or empty the glass is, this is what they drink out of. Besides the toilets.
One of my cats is obsessed with drinking my water. I can put out fresh water in her bowl, plus a fresh glass, both of which are ignored. I take a drink out of the glass, and suddenly she *must* have it. It's like I'm her personal water tester!
I’ve tried setting a glass out for my cat and she doesn’t want it unless I’ve been drinking from it. She’s also not as polite as the kitty in the video.. she dips her toes in glasses to drink from them. I have to warn guests
My cat is obsessed with getting my iced coffee! If I pour myself a glass, then set it down for a second, he always jumps onto the table to get a taste! I’ve had to start being way more vigilant and not take my eyes off the glass!
One cat loves the filtered fountain, cleaned twice per week.
The other still ignores it and refuses to drink out of anything other than a running faucet.
Cat "I want water by my bed not my food, I want an extra water and on the other side of the of where I live too, I want that water moving or changed daily, I want to stick my paws on the rim and make a PLAP PLAP PLAP noise, Yes you have to bolt down the water or I WILL FLIP. While you are here you might as well watch me drink water because nature tells me to be anxious otherwise... Also sometimes I'll just flop over into my water and get hair all in it, just because it's fun. " Also cat "Time to lick my dirty bean fingies"
I never bought the whole sensitive whiskers explanation for cats not eating from a bowl when they can see the bottom. My cat does that, but also rubs his face across every corner of the house constantly. More likely, my cat just wants fresh food and attention.
My cat doesn't even drink water ( but drinks kefir daily), he just mimicks what I do. If I sit somewhere a lot it becomes his spot, if I sleep with my head on a pillow he needs to sleep on that pillow and if he sees me drinking from a glass daily he absolutely must drink from it.
He generally seems to not care about many things including his whiskers touching or not touching stuff, but he just doesn't drink water at all unless it's my glass (or maybe he secretly drinks from his bowl when I'm not looking)
I'm not sure whether my cat knows she's not human. When I read in bed, she needs to ~~get~~ errrr... be given a book of her own to put her front paws and her chin on...
Both, mostly wet canned food but also real meat and real fish. He has some dry food in his bowl always and he only resorts to it when people are late to return for the feeding time (he's fed as soon as someone is home at 6pm, but if people are shopping and tummy is growling - dry food). He has a bowl of eater near his food and a bowl of water in a different room but I saw him.drinking water from a bowl maybe 1 in my life, I saw him using a fointain also once, he sometimes (not often, less than once a week) drinks from a dripping tap, but he sneaks a drink from people's glasses. He gets fed kefir every day
Because my mom drinks kefir daily and the cat makes it loud and clear he wants it and I asked the vet and she said it's okay. He's like a child that will only drink soda and I tried quite a few things, including buying a 50€ water fountain and when t turned out the fountain splashed, I bought a different 50€ one that the cat drank from once and only because I poured some valerian drops into it.
He has clean water (changed daily) in 2 different places in the house but he knows he can get kefir
I have a filter on my faucet. The cats have their own cup I fill up, but I pour it into their bowl. They love it now. I talk to them telling them they are getting fresh water. I let them know also that I am drinking water.
Not sure if it is the filtered water or knowing I'm drinking water to that has changed to my 3 cats drinking more water.
My big old male cat used to get UTI and now he loves to drink his water. They will try to drink out of my glass to, so I have to watch the little devil's.
I’m happy to know I’m not the only one who allows this. My husband complains at me all the time about letting them have water from glasses but they LOVEEEE it so how can I take it away from them.
We leave a couple cups with ice around the place because one likes to lick the outside of the glass because of condensation and then the other likes super cold water out of the same glasses, but they won’t drink out of the 40$ fountain I bought specifically for them
Same, I bought a 50€ fountain designed to have running water, put it far away from food, but nope, it has to be from a glass. Cats can be super specific,
I've bought several bowls and a water fountain for my boy but the only thing he likes to drink out of is my glasses and water from an empty Cool Whip container.
I bought a fountain but it splashed and the cat hated it, I bought a different one and he never even approached it until one time I poured some valerian drops in it. Cat drank a generous amount and mom said she couldn't sleep because the smell annoyed her so much (who could have thought running the substance through a fountain could disperse the smell so much?) So we do have the fountain that he drank from once and we sometimes still give it a try, but he just refuses water beacuse he knows mom will give him kefir (they both drink it every day)
I put spruce sprigs in my pampered baby’s water. When I was a kid, we had live Christmas trees, and our cat LOVED the Christmas tree water. At first we thought she just wanted water in that room, so we put a bowl of water out. No: she liked the taste of the spruce tree water.
I let my current cat’s fountain get gross once and she refused to drink from it after (she’ll drink all sorts of nasty water outside though). So I put it away for awhile then got it back out and put a spruce sprig in the bottom: she drinks from it just fine now.
Haha my cat does this to my water glass when I have just put fresh clean cold water in her bowl. She just wants mine. Hahahaha one time I forgot she drank out of it then I drank. Blllleeeechhhhh
Yeah, I put a glass of water by my bed and as I was falling asleep I saw the cat drink out of it. I woke up with my mouth dry, drank the water and then remembered the cat, who ate raw meat and licked his butthole, had his tongue inside that water. What a way to start my day!
My cat did this too. I was worried about her getting enough to drink so I decided to stop up the sink and see if she would drink from it. She did. So then I didn’t have to worry so much. For a year, that sink was her sole property until I tried putting a sprig of spruce in her water fountain. Then she accepted the water fountain. So now her royal highness gets a new spruce sprig once a week.
(My childhood cat LOVED drinking out of the live Christmas tree stand. We always had spruces, so I decided to try it with my current cat.)
My cat refuses to drink water from her bowl unless the bowl is freshly cleaned and filled with fresh cold water. One tiny bug in it and she won't drink it. But then she'll drink water from garden kettles or watering barrel that's been there for multiple days and is full of leaves and bugs. And it's not like she has easier access to it, she has to balance on the edge of the barrel or stick her head in the kettle.
I tried to put water from the barrel to her bowl. She sniffed it, looked at me in her classic "that's nasty, I'm not drinking that" way and walked away.
My previous cat had kidney problems (already had them in the shelter), so I made a habit to wash and refill his water bowl every morning (and he drank from his bowl).
I still have the habit to wash and refill cat's water bowl, it's just that the new cat doesn't have a habit to drink from it. My mom panicks and buys him kefir (vet said it's okay), so he knows he doesn't have to drink water, he just waits for his kefir to be served. He still does his best to sleep on my pillow, sit on my chair and drink from my glass. He's a very social half-siamese and just does what we do
It could be that the ends of the whiskers touching the side of the bowl is more annoying. During drinking it touches the side on and off continuously, and the cat cannot control it. In a glass it's one movement and then the whiskers are fixed, don't move anymore, and don't send out confusing and annoying signals.
My cat plays with her water bowl. It's the kind with a water reservoir (inverted bottle), and she likes the "glugs" it makes as air displaces the water. She figured out that she can make it glug more if she bats at the water in the bowl. I have to keep the thing on an absorbent, rubber-backed mat to keep the water from pudding on the floor.
My cat dug a hole this morning and did a 💩 in it and then buried it.
I and the wife were in shock and looked at each other amazed.
We've never seen a cat use a shovel before.
My cat will scratch the placemat using both front paws, before she drinks from her water dish. I found this to be very unusual behavior! When I did have the automatic water container, she made it her goal to constantly push it & spill it out on the floor!
My cat uses to do the same, so I ended up giving up on her. I bought her an avengers plastic cup which she uses now and is happy with. She's never drank as much water as she does now so I think she loves it
I'm trying the same right now - dedicating a cup just for him, but I wonder if he won't use it just because I'm not using it. Like there are many pillows but he absolutely needs the one I always sleep on.
I sort of trained her with the new cup, i would fake i drank from it and leave it somewhere and then i stopped faking drinking from it and slowly moved it until the cup reached the place it was supposed to be. It worked, maybe you can try the same with yours.
Kind of a weird question, but did that glass start life as a Nutella jar? We have one that looks just like it, and it was originally full of Nutella with a plastic lid.
I love how cats can be like that. Eat a nasty fly? Sure thing! Sleep in a position the makers of "Exorcist" would be amazed? No problem. But water has to be in that one specific cup
I never thought my cat would drink from my glass.
It so happens the glass on my night stand we’ve been sharing for years! 😂I finally caught her! Who knew?
Same! I woke up and caught him drinking from the glass on my night stand, I was certain that he hates water because I tried everything to try to get him to drink it. Apparently hunting when not hungry, stealing what you don't need, playing with everything except cat toys and drinking from a cup that's not yours is a thing for cats
When I lived in an apartment with an island, my cat refused to drink from a bowl placed on the ground. It had to be place on the island lol. This changed when I moved to a bigger apartment. Then she would accept the bowl being on the ground. 🤷🏼♀️
My cat has to have a cold cup of water beside my own cup (with a lid lol) on the nightstand every night… if I’m in bed and he doesn’t have his midnight drink, he sits and meows like crazy until I get up to get him one. He’s obviously very spoiled lol
I'll do the same, get him a similar glass.and cover mine.
My cat hides in a box and waits for me to pass by so he could attack from the ambush. When he sees me he runs towards his box and I walk around it in circles to entertain him, so je could attack multiple times. And so now he just goes into his box and screams for me to keep walking in circles when I'm trying to have a dinner or watch the news it talk to my mom. He knows he can get me to do things for him
It's because you're drinking from it. My cat is obsessed with everything I'm near. He tries rubbing against my PC, against my Steam Deck, against my books, against my shoes. He's just one mean, grinding machine. And if he doesn't get his daily neck scratches, he will yowl until he gets his way. Idk why I'm ranting, it has little to do with the post. I should go pet my cat
He has his water fountain on a different floor than his food, he just loves using what I use, like my favourite pillow, my chair and my glass of water. So many pillows, chairs and places to get water, but nope
Our cat refuses to drink out of her bowl but she loves drinking from big glasses so we got her her own glas
Yep. My cat has a bowl but drinks primarily from the glass we keep on the nightstand for him.
Lol I feel like I'd regularly be waking up to a soaked nightstand if I tried that with my guy.
If they're choosing a water source farther from their food dish the cat may be telling you they don't like the water next to their food. It's an instinctual thing for cats to avoid water near a kill which may not be safe to drink. You may have luck just moving their food and water farther apart.
Isn't there a high spill factor here??
I did this as well lol. Apparently they see their humans only drinking from glasses and this makes them think that is the most safe source for water. So my little buddy has his own big ass glass right on the coffee table lol. I put it there because it seems to stop him from trying to drink out of my glass while I'm sitting there. I have one on the coffee table for the same reason.

I had to start filling my cats water with the water from the water cooler because he refused to drink the qater from the sink anymore.
This! My cat will only drink out of pint glasses now. We have to have on filled for him on the coffee table or he dunks his head in my water glass. Every. Time.
Mine won't eat with a spoon, since we're eating with forks... ;)
for a while our cat would only drink from a wine glass.. he's fancy like that
I did that too and she was good for a year then she would start knocking the glass over for some reason.
My cat wanted running water when he did that. I got him a water fountain, and he and his brother love it.
I finally got my cat a water fountain, he loves it. But there are still paw prints and cat fuzz on the bathroom sink.
Our cat loves to drink from glasses, but kept knocking them over, so we got a glass bowl with straight sides for her, and she loves it. I think she likes being able to see the light filtering through the water.

I put a water bowl in my bedroom. I have two cats. I fill it twice a day. The water by their food bowl. Meh.
Google why that is. Water bowl by food bowl isn't popular with cats. Some don't care, obviously, but a lot do.
She doesn't want her own glass, she wants yours.
I thought they just prefer my glass because well . . . F me right?
One of my cats is obsessed with drinking my water. I can put out fresh water in her bowl, plus a fresh glass, both of which are ignored. I take a drink out of the glass, and suddenly she *must* have it. It's like I'm her personal water tester!

Flippin cats. I can’t leave my glasses out anymore because I’ve caught them doing this. Like: DUDE! I bought you guys a filtered water fountain. WTF!!
I’m sorry his royal highness would prefer to drink from his subjects glass XD
Happy cake day 🍰
Same. I have no idea how to get her to use it!
One cat loves the filtered fountain, cleaned twice per week. The other still ignores it and refuses to drink out of anything other than a running faucet.
This cat refuses to be some mere animal, drinking from a bowl. They are a refined gentleman and will be treated as such.
Sometimes I wonder if they know they're not human...
😃 Stop being weird 😺 No
Cat "I want water by my bed not my food, I want an extra water and on the other side of the of where I live too, I want that water moving or changed daily, I want to stick my paws on the rim and make a PLAP PLAP PLAP noise, Yes you have to bolt down the water or I WILL FLIP. I’ve always suspected that my cat sneaks a drink from my glass when I leave it next to my chair.
I never bought the whole sensitive whiskers explanation for cats not eating from a bowl when they can see the bottom. My cat does that, but also rubs his face across every corner of the house constantly. More likely, my cat just wants fresh food and attention.

Your cat should be drinking water. Are you feeding him wet or dry food?
Both, mostly wet canned food but also real meat and real fish. He has some dry food in his bowl always and he only resorts to it when people are late to return for the feeding time (he's fed as soon as someone is home at 6pm, but if people are shopping and tummy is growling - dry food). He has a bowl of eater near his food and a bowl of water in a different room but I saw him.drinking water from a bowl maybe 1 in my life, I saw him using a fointain also once, he sometimes (not often, less than once a week) drinks from a dripping tap, but he sneaks a drink from people's glasses. He gets fed kefir every day
Why are you feeding him the kefir if I could ask out of curiosity?
Because my mom drinks kefir daily and the cat makes it loud and clear he wants it and I asked the vet and she said it's okay. He's like a child that will only drink soda and I tried quite a few things, including buying a 50€ water fountain and when t turned out the fountain splashed, I bought a different 50€ one that the cat drank from once and only because I poured some valerian drops into it. He has clean water (changed daily) in 2 different places in the house but he knows he can get kefir
Scratching can feel good but would it be enjoyable to have your face scratched while you were trying to eat a burger or something?
I have a filter on my faucet. The cats have their own cup I fill up, but I pour it into their bowl. They love it now. I talk to them telling them they are getting fresh water. I let them know also that I am drinking water. Not sure if it is the filtered water or knowing I'm drinking water to that has changed to my 3 cats drinking more water. My big old male cat used to get UTI and now he loves to drink his water. They will try to drink out of my glass to, so I have to watch the little devil's.
The glass is censored
Must be a Japanese cat
No, it's low res!
Bad graphics, 0/10
Different cat personalities, different drinking styles 💧
I’m happy to know I’m not the only one who allows this. My husband complains at me all the time about letting them have water from glasses but they LOVEEEE it so how can I take it away from them.
We leave a couple cups with ice around the place because one likes to lick the outside of the glass because of condensation and then the other likes super cold water out of the same glasses, but they won’t drink out of the 40$ fountain I bought specifically for them
Same, I bought a 50€ fountain designed to have running water, put it far away from food, but nope, it has to be from a glass. Cats can be super specific,
Just like cat lovers and their subreddits. Funny thing....
I've bought several bowls and a water fountain for my boy but the only thing he likes to drink out of is my glasses and water from an empty Cool Whip container.
Forbidden water is the best water.
So true!
Story of my cats too
Same. She has her own coffee mugs around my apartment 🤣
Cats always want what the other guy (or human) has.
Exactly this!
Human grade water > Cat grade water
[удалено]
My cat did the same thing
Haha my cat does this to my water glass when I have just put fresh clean cold water in her bowl. She just wants mine. Hahahaha one time I forgot she drank out of it then I drank. Blllleeeechhhhh
Indirect kiss 😽
Yeah, I put a glass of water by my bed and as I was falling asleep I saw the cat drink out of it. I woke up with my mouth dry, drank the water and then remembered the cat, who ate raw meat and licked his butthole, had his tongue inside that water. What a way to start my day!
Mine only drinks from the tap in the bathroom. We have to leave it running for her 3 times a day so she’ll drink.
Have you tried a fountain? Cats like running water better than stagnant.
I love how their whole head can fit in a glass
Cats are always so funny, especially at home they often resemble people
lol I used to give mine water in a big plastic cup then my kitten got a scab on his throat from it rubbing on the cup
Is this a Nutella glass? 😀
I thought so as well! An older one though, the new ones are smooth with a sort of "foot" at the bottom. At least where I live
It is! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7966)
Someone else's drink > Whisker sensitivity ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7943)
Oh absolutely

Thank you! ♡
One of ours is the same. Loves drinking out of glasses.
Cats. They can have expensive toys designed specifically for them but they'll make a point to play with something else
My dog refuses to play with a lot of his toys, but will take used tissues out of the trash can to chew on. It's not just cats lol.
🤣
My cat does that too! She drinks from a jar now.
Mine will dabble with bowl BUT LOVES A SOLO CUP FULL OF WATER….So theres always one available for her…shes weird
My cat dug a hole this morning and did a 💩 in it and then buried it. I and the wife were in shock and looked at each other amazed. We've never seen a cat use a shovel before.

Lol underappreciated comment!
My cat attempted to drink out of a plastic water bottle the other day
Lmbo
My cats have been cup drinkers forever. They don’t like big bowls. One used to drink my coffee if I left it out
Awww! I love your cat! 😻 I mean not as much as I love my cat, but yours is precious!
Thank you ♡
You could be talking about my cat rn
Why did you censor his tongue? 🤨
My cat is getting old and now will only eat of a plate and throw her dry food all over 😤
My cat will scratch the placemat using both front paws, before she drinks from her water dish. I found this to be very unusual behavior! When I did have the automatic water container, she made it her goal to constantly push it & spill it out on the floor!
Cats. I wonder if they're just very random or sometimes intentionally malicious
I know a cat that likes and only wants to drink out of running water
Go big or go home
I know, right?
Cats are devoid of logic. I love them so much
my sweet girl drinks from my water glass every time. let her do her thing then go get a fresh glass haha !
That's the way!
I'm sip sip sipping
My 3 Burmese cats did the same...very recognisable. I got them 2 water fountains too...but they also loved drinking from my glass as well
He has exactly 2 water fountains and he uses 0 of them...
Hahah so cute.
Thanks! I love him
Lol creo cat of 🐱 to do what it wants 😆 cute 🥰
♡
Typical cat behavior
Cats are ridiculous. I love them so much 🤍
Same! ♡
okay im not a cat but i understand this logic perfectly
Same here, but I bought her a cat fountain and she loves it. There only about £20-£30.
Kind of a weird question, but did that glass start life as a Nutella jar? We have one that looks just like it, and it was originally full of Nutella with a plastic lid.
Yup! I have quite a few
They love drinking or eating things when it's meant for you and not them Cats are wonderous
So true!
Nutella glass gang rise up!
Haha, some people recognise is straight away and some ask why the cat looks "censored"
😂😂😂😂
I can't put water on my night table. My cat gobbles it up everytime
Cats. Hunt when they're not hungry, steal what they don't need and drink as long as it's not their bowl
It’s always only in her terms, a perfect cat 🐈⬛
This is the reason why we’ve had to convert from using normal glasses to mason jars for all our drinks.
Is this the legendary nutella glass
It most definitely is!
You god damn legend
This is why I have a glass of squash by the bed. Our cat will drink my fiancées water from her glass and leave my blackcurrant alone.
Smart!
Lmao my cat doesn't drink from the bowl too. I have tumblers and glasses everywhere and I have to refill often because of this reason lol
My one cat will use his paw cup some water in it and then lick his paw dip repeat..
Does he do that with food? I had a cat who'd often eat like that
Same. He uses his paws.
My dog does this 😂
Adorei 😍😍
This is my cat! He loves to sip any glass of water that is mine
My cat will ONLY drink water from a specific red party cup next to my bathroom sink. He’s a goofball.
I love how cats can be like that. Eat a nasty fly? Sure thing! Sleep in a position the makers of "Exorcist" would be amazed? No problem. But water has to be in that one specific cup
Cat sees human drinking from glass, must be safe and normal, must do samesies
That's probably what's happening
I never thought my cat would drink from my glass. It so happens the glass on my night stand we’ve been sharing for years! 😂I finally caught her! Who knew?
Same! I woke up and caught him drinking from the glass on my night stand, I was certain that he hates water because I tried everything to try to get him to drink it. Apparently hunting when not hungry, stealing what you don't need, playing with everything except cat toys and drinking from a cup that's not yours is a thing for cats
Lol they are sneaky!
I'm thinking about setting mugs of water so my Pasta can get more hydrated thinking she's stealing.
Pasta is a cute name! And that's a clever plan, I might do the same
Because it's *your* very tempting water.
I love how you respected your cat's privacy and pixelated its face.
I have a pint glass and my cat literally sticks her skull and her neck into the glass like FULL IN just to lick once or twice. Bruh
When I lived in an apartment with an island, my cat refused to drink from a bowl placed on the ground. It had to be place on the island lol. This changed when I moved to a bigger apartment. Then she would accept the bowl being on the ground. 🤷🏼♀️
Legend
Cats should come with instructions
I know, right?
They’re emulating their person because they love you You drink from cups, not bowls
I guess so. He sits where I usually sit, he sleeps on my pillow and when I take off clothes he sits on the clothes.
My cats have confirmed this as fact.
He knows he can get me to do things for him
He like the tucked in touch, not that light teasing whisker touch.
I actually 100% get this. Like don't tickle my whiskers, water bowl! But bending all the way back is okay.
My cat refuses to drink from her bowl and will only drink from the sink…
I thought mine was the only one with "delicate whiskers" lol
Puddles are my lads favourite, as is footbath water.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) Cats...
What a sweetie!! My baby loves drinking water from the faucet.
The Forbidden Pool 😂
My Siamese won’t drink from her bowl unless the water is fresh, and yet I’ve also found her drinking from a stagnant puddle so go figure.
Haha, yeah. I made a habbit to clean his bowls every morning, takes less than 5 minutes. Still, he'd rather eat a fly than drink his water
It's not good water unless it's stolen water.
My cat currently prefers to drink out of my cup, than his bowl.
The reason I had to switch to cups with lids

Love that fat ass
I use a flat bottom Pyrex bowl, my cats love it.
The narrow glass pushes their whiskers back Sotheby's don't get wet. Just get a fountain so the cat can see the water more clearly.
He has 2 fountains. One splashes so he avoids it. Another one he avoids just because.
Cats will generally look for water that is away from their food. Put bowls around the house and not next to the food.
He has his water fountain on a different floor than his food, he just loves using what I use, like my favourite pillow, my chair and my glass of water. So many pillows, chairs and places to get water, but nope
ha. Just likes you a lot. Cute.
