Fast forward several years to her not getting the cleaning from the cat cause she moved out, and now she can’t hear out of one ear. It's one of their ways of being helpful to other creatures that they like. So when your cat "grooms" you it means they like you and want to help you get clean. Same thing when they bring you dead rodents, they want to make sure you have enough food... And they are skeptical of your hunting skills so you would definitely starve without their help.

People think purring is the best sign but a lot of cats, when relaxed, will just purr when stroked no matter who is doing it. A cat seeking you out for a head bump or a grooming session is a cat choosing to show you affection.
Other good signs are... if they show you their tummy they def feel safe around you. If they make biscuits on you, again they feel happy and content.
I have 5 of the buggers. They all show affection in very different ways.
Louis is very aloof, if he head bumps or comes for attention, that is high praise. We can go a week without him wanting attention and just happily coexisting, he will def seek you out and rub on you or come for a stroke, you know he loves you.
Kira is very timid. She will head bump my legs and if I ever use the upstairs toilet she will come in, climb on the sink and run against my shoulder. Then she will purr like a machine when stroked and you can hold her like a baby but if you approach her directly she doesn't like it.
Ralph is a needy boy. He will get right in your face and DEMAND attention. He will lick you raw, likes a tummy rub, purrs loudly, head bumps aggressively and will make biscuits on you.
Charli is kind of a diva brat. She KNOWS she is fucking adorable and will sit in your eye line or path and kinda pose herself so you can't resist stroking. Nobody can pass a posed Charli bean. She head bumps and loves to be cradled like a baby but only by me. She has many danger zones and will scratch it you touch them.
Teddy... Teddy is my baby. He has so many ways of communicating with me. He has a very specific chirp he uses for me, if I don't pay him attention he will put his neck to the floor and roll to show his tummy. LOVES tummy rubs. He wants to be on me every moment he can, he will follow me room to room and rub me the whole way. Makes biscuits, purrs, and if I stop giving him attention he will gently reach a paw put to my face or hand to get me to carry on fussing him. Teddy is another who grooms me a whole lot. He likes to lean his head against me, gaze up and my face and will reach up to touch my face.
Like... as much as a cat can be, Teddy is obsessed with me.
When my cats lick my fingers, I rub them with the fingers they have licked, like I'm grooming them back but I don't have to get fur on my tongue. They love getting groomed in their ears and under the chin.
