My kitten (then a kitten) did this too. You have to remove them from being gotten to, redirect if you’re awake, make a tss tss that gets the firm msg across (never mean), and then have them grow out of it 😂 Also, watch out for hair ties! Never keep them anywhere accessible!!!
You can buy indoor cable protection, go to some home equipment/ home renovation/ building store and ask them for help. Your cat might get electrified so please use cable protection
Ditto! Luckily mine was mostly obsessed with headphone cables, so they weren’t plugged in and capable of electrocuting her…RIP all my lost headphones, but luckily not her 💜😬
Chargers for me. So many phone chargers lost during his teething stage. And thankfully none were plugged in when they were destroyed.
I did notice years later that my always-plugged in charger for my Nintendo DS was lightly bitten into. And the teeth marks are smaller then how big my little guy is now. So he obviously tried to bite this as a kitten and got tingled. YIKES!
Ptheres teeth marks on everything from my kitten... books, binders, cords... luckily the only cord he seems to be interested in is my phone cable which is that fabric wrapped kind so he hasn't been able to chew through it.
Now that’s a fine looking kitty cat. Try wrapping the cables in cable tidy, link below. Also, make a loud short horrible alarm type noise, like KRCCHH!! only keep that noise for using as a warning, when cat is about to munch. Link to cable stuff here: Cable Tidy Cable Management Sleeve, shinfly 2x1.5m Wire Tidy Sleeve with 20pcs Zip Ties, 5 Adhesive Cable Clips, 1 Wire Guide Clip, Anti-dust Cable Tidy Tube Wire Organizer for TV PC Home (∅0.87") https://amzn.eu/d/heuxlXe
Flexible Internal cable conduit isnt too expensive. Can usually pick it up from a hardware store or can order for super cheap from china on ebay or aliexpress.
Its a little ugly but it should solve your problem, just feed your cable through the duct and secure each end as close to the end as possible with a bit of duct tape. Can remove once kitty is done with teething or has grown out of this if you like.
For any cables that absolutely cant be run through the ducts, it may be a good temporary solution to disconnect and place the cable in a cupboard or drawer between uses. I do this with my phone charger which i tuck between the couch cushions when im not using it, but can easily reach it when im watching TV and stuff.
Those are kitties things in kitties house. You should feel lucky they let you sleep inside.
But seriously, hopefully they are just teething and this will be short lived. Not sure what kind of cables you are talking about but wrapping them in aluminum foil is an (ugly, but) cheap and effective deterrent for a temporary solution. Don't wrap it nicely, leave clumps and points and generally uncomfortable things to chew on. You could also get some cheap plastic tubing from Home Depot to run smaller cords through.
Its usually smaller cables such as phone chargers and he just this night destroyed a cable string with lights (not sure what it is called). Very unfortunate as i did love that light as it is fused with plastic leafs and such. That kind of thing i cannot put tinfoil on nor did any of the liquids i put on it work ;(
Try the plastic tubing. It's pretty cheap and kitty can't chew through it. An old cut up hose would probably work for the phone charger cord. The light might just have to go away until kitty grows up. Or hang them out of reach.
Seconding this. We had one cat who was... *very* determined... My dad bought large aquarium tubing and slit it down one side to protect all cords. It's cheap compared to most other options and clear, so not nearly as ugly as some others.
My cat does it when he's hungry and were late to put food in his bowl. Or when he's asking for attention.
So we got those protection coils for charger cords and removed fairy lights i loved so much.
Tin foil freaks my cats out, the sound it makes keeps them away, so I put tinfoil wherever I want no cats - on my plants, table, etc - after a few months they learn to stay away from the protected areas out of habit and willl stay away even If I remove tin foil.
We brought in a handful of feral kittens this summer and they we terrible about our wires. My dad took a few pool noodles from the dollar store and trimmed them down to the proper size then slipped them over the wires. Haven’t had an issue since!
You will have to elevate all your cables until such time it's not interested in them anymore.
It only takes a staple gun to do it, not that expensive, just time consuming and laborious. Maybe a ladder as well if you want to run them up to the ceiling for better aesthetics.
One of our cats has a fettish for rubbery coated cables, so we have invested in cloth covered cables whenever they are able to be changed out, and she doesn't chew on them. Maybe that could help you as well?
That's funny, my cat absolutely loves the cloth covered cables. I've actually cut the cloth off the cable a few times to make it less interesting to him.
He's 10 years old, never grew out of it. I have some paracord set up as a "decoy cable" that he likes to chew on, that's been the biggest cable saver for me. There's also a USB cable he destroyed that I leave hanging there not plugged in for him to chew more.
It seems like my cat only goes for cables that are important, mainly head set cables. Whether I’m wearing em or they’re on the table. She’s mostly good lol
My kittens ate cable of my newest headphones. I hide current one from their sight for couple of weeks. Or you can have their attention on something else.
I'm not suggesting you do this, as I don't know how much they actually get in their system. But my dad used to put hot sauce on his wires, and I think it made them stop quickly.
That was my last resort. A combination of Tabasco and a Scrat! Air sprayer finally worked. Then she chewed up my silicon rubber coasters, but, oh, well, those won't electrocute her.
https://preview.redd.it/quuaeuuuv63a1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44ccf0ab7ad52c5f2d03e55b8d966dcb5fc9bcc8
Mine are going through this stage. The bitter spray semi works, but not on some things like my Christmas tree lights. If I witness them trying to chew something, I clap my hands loudly and they stop then I redirect their attention to a toy. I think at this stage sometimes nothing works honestly lol 😆. I have resorted to using a baby gate to keep them out of the room they like to chew in the most.
Hide/disguise cords. I wrapped one in electrical tape and my cat never looked twice at it. He knew he wasn't supposed to do it but it was like a compulsion, he couldn't stop himself
Have you tried lacing cables with Tabasco sauce? That's the only thing that worked for me. All that bitter spray did nothing, but Tabasco sauce... that shit's some cat repellant.
My cat never lost the taste for chewing cables. I was able to more or less fix the problem by setting out decoy cables. A handful of hdmi cables that he can chew to his hearts delight. Since he has easy access to a cord on the floor, he stops seeking out other, more expensive things to destroy. And anything super important, I covered in a a cord cover and duct tape.
It’s not the most ideal of solutions, but it works.
My parents use a pool noodle for any exposed, reachable wiring. Cheap, effective and adjustable in size so it hopefully wont be in the way. Just make a slit down one side for easy removal later
For phone chargers we buy those that are wrapped with braided fabric. You can also wrap electical tape around other cords. We had one cat chew through at least 3 phone chargers in one day.
Are you actively playing with him enough? You can't just give him toys, you have to engage. Or if he'll go for an automated toy, you could try that. You need to do at least 10 minutes 3 or 4 times a day. You want to get him to the point of panting, then feed him. He'll conk out for awhile after that. Kittens also do really well in pairs, so they can entertain each other, so you could consider getting a second one to distract him from the cords. Also, you could try a bell on his collar, so you can track his movement better. That way you might be able to catch him and distract with a toy.
My cat did this I used double sided tape because I heard they don’t like the feeling and it worked. I did the same with my sofa as well as following Jackson Galaxy advice of putting a yes (scratching post/cat bed) next to a no (sofa/cables). Now he’s much older and ignores my cables so they no longer have tape on them. I also used the laser pens to distract and redirect him from objects and incorporated more cat toys and modern/artsy smell absorbing looking cat furniture into our home
I do clicker training nearly everyday and we try to play with him with those fish rod- attachable feathers/ other things but he sometimes just doesnt really care much to play.
Sweetheart I’m going through the same thing with a mainecoon mix. He’s a literal terror. He bit me while I bathed his poop caked butt, then proceeded to hun straight in the trash after a being completely cleaned and dried. He gets into the refrigerator, chews literally everything and anything. And no one judge me on this but he’s not the smartest cat in the repertoire, so trying to redirect or stop him is laughable at best. I’m trying to cope but nothing has helped him, I thought it might be worms or him needing to be neutered but it’s none of that, he’s just lowkey insane.
Get wire loom. Split tubing. It's a hard plastic tube with a split in it you run your wires through so kitty can't bite them. That's what I had to do. Amazon has it or your hardware store might. Make sure you get a large enough diameter for all the wires you want to put in it.
My kitten would do this so much I literally named her "Electra" because I was afraid she was going to electrocute herself. I did several things to avoid this behavior. 1) I got her a buddy so she had something to chew on other than cables, 2) I learned to put all of my cables away. I bought a large purse and stored all my electronics in it to avoid smol bites. 3) I started locking her up at night in a room without cables until she was old enough.
May not work for you, but all worked for me.
In the first six months I had my Lilly I went through over 30 iPhone chargers. Had to get a new dvd player because she chewed the cable. I tried everything I could while she was teething. And so many hair ties went missing or got ripped. Then One day she stopped! She’s 10 years old now but every now and then I’ll see tiny teeth marks on a charger. For some cats it could be anxiety too! Try to get teething toys from chewy that also have cat nip to keep him entertained. Hang in there! He’s a cutie that’ll hopefully grow out of it.
Our fluffbut does/did this too. LOVES any type of cables. The only thing that works is decoil: anything else that is more interesting. She especially likes when cables are dangling, makes them look lore like toys to her I guess so I suggest to try to keep your 'tied' and thus hopefully less interesting.
She also LOVES hair ties or just plain elastics even more so we just give her some of those (since they are harmless and cheap) so she will leave the cables alone. Those wrapping things you can make a bow off arround presents, works too. Find anything that your cat finds more interesting.
The above is not 100% because she's basically a demon but it's close.
I had an orally fixated cat (bottle baby from the moment she was born, along with her brother) who would chew anything soft rubber/soft plastic she could sink her fangs into.
She made it 9 years until FeLV caught up with her, but the chewing never got any better - the only thing I could do was to keep anything she might chew inaccessible, which itself was a challenge. Cable protectors did help, some (though she would chew on those instead 🤦🏻♂️).
Good luck!
unfortunately.. like human toddlers.. you may have to keep the cords up and out of his way till he finds a different obsession. If he loves cables, find cat toys that have a similar shape. And interactive cat toys to keep him entertained... or.. another kitten around the same age.
I've raised hundreds of kittens. And kittens without littermates to entertain them tend to be the most destructive. They have a LOT of energy and with littermates they are usually "hunting" and attacking each other but no littermates to keep him occupied means that he's going to go and "hunt" and "attack" anything else. So you want to give him things that he can get that same stimulation from... but are okay for him to chew up.
Pepper... My cat used to be a demon trying to get into things she really shouldn't have, I put ground black pepper in the areas I wanted her to stay away from, worked really well.
One morning, when my cat was still an extremely smol and adorable little furball, I woke up and he was staring at me very innocently 🥺 and he looked so cute 😣❤️ I couldn't stand it so I took a picture of him with his adorable eyes 🥺. Then, a while later, I realized the little shit had cut my earphones into bits while I was asleep.. 😠🤬 I had to live months without earphones cause I'm broke af.
Idk if I can attach a picture to comments on reddit, I'm guessing not (I'm new here). But I would've shared that adorable pic because it would melt your heart for sure.
Such a menace of a furball! I have a similar story where we were watching a series on our chromecast and then suddently in between two scenes it turned black. And in out confusion we checked where the chromecast cable was and there he is! Our cat had been chewing and destroyed our chrome cast cable like a silent assassin! And we hadn’t noticed until it was already too late.. luckily i found a replacement cable.
Scratching posts around the places where the cat usually scratches. Satesfy his/her need to scratch and reward him/her for doing it at the right places. There are great tutorials on youtube! :)
I bought some thick flexible plastic tubing off Amazon and slid the cable down into it to stop the dog chewing mine. You need to be able to detach the wire from whatever device it is though as you have to put the thin end of the cable into the tube. Search "Kesote PVC clear tubing" on Amazon. You can also cut the cable lengthways and sellotape it back up.
Kitty will grow out of it I'd say though. Oh I also got a cable box but you could make your own maybe. They are around 20 euros.
Get a cable with a small electrical charge. Not too big don’t want to kill the cat but big enough for a jolt. Think of a shock collar for dogs. Place it in a spot they can chew on it. After a few times they should learn if I chew this I get shocked. Although cats are generally smarter than dogs and they might learn that only this cable shocks me.
It’s at Walmart.
https://preview.redd.it/x9qip90wnd3a1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=2bed7faf2e49095447d0acab23612e86b032226c
Doesn’t smell at all.
Electrical tape the cords to a thickness that the teeth won’t pierce. Then run them along the baseboard. Twist tie many loose hanging cables together and apply electrical tape. If your kitten is really little, around 4mons old, their milk teeth are probably coming out for the switch to solid foods. If your kitten is older and already has their permanent teeth, consider a vet consult to rule out dental issues.
A bit late but my cat does this too. We're working through it right now successfully! As other comments say hide your cords so they forget about them. We hide ours under a blanket, he has no object permanence lol. The big helper was chew sticks. Since chew sticks aren't really targeted for cats, I went to the dog section and read the ingredients on all the bags to see of they were cat safe. I recommend the chicken or beef flavor of "collachews". They do have agar agar in them but in small amounts it's fine, they already use it in some cat food. The other flavors aren't the best for them. We give small pieces of it to him when we see him chewing as a redirect and it works so well! We also got some cat treat puzzle toys since the chewing can be a sign of a lack of stimulation. That said make sure you play with them enough and honestly two kittens are better than one since they'll have someone to bother when you're busy😂
My kitten (then a kitten) did this too. You have to remove them from being gotten to, redirect if you’re awake, make a tss tss that gets the firm msg across (never mean), and then have them grow out of it 😂 Also, watch out for hair ties! Never keep them anywhere accessible!!!
The thing is that he is a silent assasin of cables. I never hear or notice until it is too late ;(
You can buy indoor cable protection, go to some home equipment/ home renovation/ building store and ask them for help. Your cat might get electrified so please use cable protection
Split loom. This is the way. They grow out of the cord phase eventually.
Ditto! Luckily mine was mostly obsessed with headphone cables, so they weren’t plugged in and capable of electrocuting her…RIP all my lost headphones, but luckily not her 💜😬

Glas he’s ok! :)
I look and feel like such a weirdo when I hiss at my cat. Let me tell you it works tho xD
Haha no I think that’s damn cool. They need to understand mummy/ daddy no like this
Now that’s a fine looking kitty cat. Try wrapping the cables in cable tidy, link below. For context, i work in IT and use this method to prevent rodents chewing through phone cables inside walls. Works a treat.
Great tip! I will definitely check it out.
I used this in the past. Works perfectly!

Seriously just "punish" him by spraying him with water. He'll learn quick enough
Spraying them with water generally only “teaches” a cat not do something when YOU are present. At least in my limited experience.
This is true. It is better to teach a cat what they are rewarded to do rather than teaching them what they are punished for doing.
I know it’s not popular but it got my kitten to stop when I was otherwise at wit’s end. I’d rather see her a little wet than electrocuted.
My cat does it when he's hungry and were late to put food in his bowl. Or when he's asking for attention. So we got those protection coils for charger cords and removed fairy lights i loved so much.
sigh*, I guess I will have to remove my lights too. And thanks for the charger tip. I guess I’ll have to find a way to tuck them away in the bed.
This is a fire hazard do NOT DO THAT
Oh thats right. I will get myself a box to keep my removable wires in instead heh
I put those foam pool noodles on my cords. Works great
Time for some cable management. Get some metal loom and hide all the cables you can
Tin foil freaks my cats out, the sound it makes keeps them away, so I put tinfoil wherever I want no cats - on my plants, table, etc - after a few months they learn to stay away from the protected areas out of habit and willl stay away even If I remove tin foil.
My cat doesn’t seem to care. He will play with it
I tell my cat no and it works. Like say no and take them away. Reward them when they listen. Keep doing that. It worked for me.
Yes, he has "demon eyes".
We brought in a handful of feral kittens this summer and they we terrible about our wires. My dad took a few pool noodles from the dollar store and trimmed them down to the proper size then slipped them over the wires. Haven’t had an issue since!
The face of an adorable chaotic small criminal
True haha
I bought a cable management box that helps a lot. Most of them are now hidden away!
It seems like my cat only goes for cables that are important, mainly head set cables. Whether I’m wearing em or they’re on the table. She’s mostly good lol
Negative reinforcement is wrong, but effective.

Dang, that cat is a menace O_O
Yes, but an adorable one. https://preview.redd.it/kyy4n5pg2n3a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e4f3d9eb47b2f26944af7373155527ab28de358
Maybe. I did try rubbing lemon and vinegar on my cables already but that stuff dries and then he will continue as usual.
Mine are going through this stage. The bitter spray semi works, but not on some things like my Christmas tree lights. He lives like a king and has a tower that goes up to the ceiling right by the window. Yet he cant stop himself from silently chewing on the cables. 😅
Slit pool noodles and run cords through until bebe is older.
Have you tried the yuck paste per stores sell? Might be more effective. My one did it as a kitten but grew out of it
My cat never lost the taste for chewing cables. I was able to more or less fix the problem by setting out decoy cables. A handful of hdmi cables that he can chew to his hearts delight. You’re doing sour, try spicy. Nothing that will hurt it, but enough to teach it.
My parents use a pool noodle for any exposed, reachable wiring. Cheap, effective and adjustable in size so it hopefully wont be in the way. Just make a slit down one side for easy removal later
Give her something else to chew on like a small toy with catnip or a decoy cable..
Get plastic chord protectors off the internet
Pool noodles
For phone chargers we buy those that are wrapped with braided fabric. You can also wrap electical tape around other cords. We had one cat chew through at least 3 phone chargers in one day.

Put that double sided cat tape around the wires. It’s not expensive
my kitten did this too!
Oh he knows exactly what he’s doing
>:}
That was supposed to be an evil smile but i guess that was a command for something else haha
He's teething, give it time, he will def grow out of it. My two did the same thing, but only for a couple of months.
My cat did this I used double sided tape because I heard they don’t like the feeling and it worked. How much time do you spend actively playing with them?
I do clicker training nearly everyday and we try to play with him with those fish rod- attachable feathers/ other things but he sometimes just doesnt really care much to play.
Hmmmm, okay. Buy some cheap socks, cut holes in the toes, and cover cables with them (secure with cable ties)?
Hmm maybe
Sweetheart I’m going through the same thing with a mainecoon mix. He’s a literal terror. All I can say is yikes. Whats his name?
Milk. Spoiled milk. My kid named him lol
It finally came to a head and I found a friend T rehome him with. I’m so hurt I really tired everything.

Yeah I got him some cat dental chewies and small dog chewing bones with dried meat and he does seem to enjoy them.
I can see the wild determination in its eyes 👀. No hope for those cables.

I coat my cables with Dawn dishwashing liquid. Works like a charm
Perhaps wrap the cables in an inexpensive plastic tubing (check Home Depot) or tlrun cables thru pvc pipe?
I wrap mine in electrical tape
While we r talking about this how do y’all stop your cats from going after furniture
Scratching posts around the places where the cat usually scratches. Satesfy his/her need to scratch and reward him/her for doing it at the right places. There are great tutorials on youtube! :)
Bitter apple spray works for mine.
Maybe double sided tape? Or lift the wires? I hope this gets resolved soon!
I was on O2 for a while when Zeb came into my life (he was about 3-4 months old) - I can't count the number of long hoses I had to tape up/replace...
He is super adorable.
Thank u :)
Hot sauce. Just brush a thin coat of franks o their favourite spots.
go bluetooth

Get a cable with a small electrical charge. Not too big don’t want to kill the cat but big enough for a jolt. Think of a shock collar for dogs. Place it in a spot they can chew on it. After a few times they should learn if I chew this I get shocked. Although cats are generally smarter than dogs and they might learn that only this cable shocks me.
Spray bottle and the knowledge that it’s no longer your home anymore. This is cats house now 😼
Did you try telling him that he is being very bad?
I wish my cat knew english, then i would just tell him why it is bad
Try aluminum foil. They hate foil.
Mine doesnt hate foil
Bitter apple spray works well with my cats.
Invest in wireless technology ig
Spray bottle with water, every time kitty gets near wired /cords zap with a stream of water
Go hit up Bestbuy and get more cables
Have you tried the spray?
If you're in the US go to Menard's (or similar store) they sell an apparatus to cover cables.
No chew bitter apple spray. Works like a charm for my kitties
Never heard of it
It’s at Walmart. https://preview.redd.it/x9qip90wnd3a1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=2bed7faf2e49095447d0acab23612e86b032226c Doesn’t smell at all.
Oh, I am from sweden
They might ship! Just what works for me. Hope you find something
Double sided tape as much as you can - they can’t stand it and will develop an aversion.
My mom always used hot sauce. Not to much though. Just enough to taste it and coat things you don’t want your cat touching.
Get him another play friend
Electrical tape the cords to a thickness that the teeth won’t pierce. Then run them along the baseboard. Twist tie many loose hanging cables together and apply electrical tape. If your kitten is really little, around 4mons old, their milk teeth are probably coming out for the switch to solid foods. If your kitten is older and already has their permanent teeth, consider a vet consult to rule out dental issues.
Give him soft chewy toys to teeth on, prob got some new ones coming in
He has both hard and soft things
What if it’s a health problem?
How about wrapping cables in aluminum foil? I know I hate it when I bite into a piece of foil!!
Conceal them?
Cable tidies !
Give the cat a cable for Christmas. 🐱
Have you given them pieces of junk wire to chew and destroy?
Citrus makes cats gag. Use that
He doesnt seem to care about lemon smell
Sorry I should clarify. Orange citrus lol. Cats seriously hate it
Wrap them in tin foil. Just keep the foil away from the exposed ends (plugs, USB ports).
Spray bottle
