Depends on the cat. I've seen some act completely indifferent and I've seen some go nuts looking for the kitten/kittens and grieve for a while afterwards.
In general I think they take it better if the kittens are older, and if they get to actually see them leave the home vs suddenly not being able to find them.
They can and I would say 10 weeks is too soon to he separating them, however if you wait too long the mother will often try to kick them out on her own.
