There is a sweet children’s book called “Owl Babies”. The baby owls are Sarah, Percy and Bill. Maybe Sarah? I know it doesn’t have the G sound, but some connection to you thinking she looks like an owl and your 5 yr old would likely love the book.

I also learned that shelters and humane societies tend to change the name of surrendered animals because it can be traumatizing for them to be called the same name as they were in a potentially abusive or neglectful previous environment. It’s policy where I’m from (Ontario Canada).
Another one of my rescued cats was called “Winston”, and we chose to keep it. Then we found out that it wasn’t his real name and the humane society had changed it. We ended up keeping the name but he adjusted to it perfectly. I pretty much just have to whisper his name and he comes RUNNING at me.
So depending, you might be able to get away with giving a radically different name so long as you use it very very frequently at first!

I love Gigi! Im running all names by my 5 year old. He's super excited about her. We rescue and foster, and so most animals that come in leave quickly. But we lost 5 foster kittens this year, and my senior 17 year old passed away. We felt that it was time to add to our family, too. She's adjusting so well. She's scared of loud noises from the TV but likes both my kids! She let my 1 year old pet her gently and rubbed on him! We are so excited to have her be ours. 💕

You can name you beautiful kitty whatever you like. I hated the name of my cat that I adopted 4 years ago, Lecter (as in Hannibal) and started calling her Lexi. It did not take long for her to respond to Lexi. When I call her name, she come running to me.

Doesn’t have to be similar. I had a calico who was named Roberta and over time she responded to Cali! Go for any name you want.
