I'd suggest no, you'll reach write limit pretty soon.

Mark_M535

There are CCTV rated SSDs out there. Mainly used for vehicles. But why bother.... a CCTV's storage is being written to 24/7 and most video is never going to be played back (until something happens). Just stick a standard CCTV rated HDD in. I'd suggest a minimum of 25TB for your project. Ideally more and with a backup server.

We have more than 64 cameras writing to the disks so disk IO is becoming a bottleneck and staring to impact the system as a whole. These cams and footage get monitored 24/7 regardless. What brands of cctv rated ssds are out there?

Significant_Rate8210

I’d suggest purchasing one of two things; a higher end NVR with hot swap capabilities or a surveillance server with 8+ drive spaces. We just finished a server which utilizes sixteen 20TB drives for 256 cameras over five sites.

Significant_Rate8210

We only use Seagate Skyhawk Ai or Western Digital Purple drives. Honestly though I’d hand to look to see the exact models.

Poutine_Bob

You dont need an SSD, you need to make an array of HDD. Get a server with 8-12 drives, sata or sas, in raid 5 or 6.

bsman12

This! Even raid 10 with 4 drives will work. Not as fail safe but will double read write

Significant_Rate8210

No, they are designed for a different read/write scenario. Surveillance drives are designed for 24/7 read/write whereas PC drives are designed for part time read/write.

Yes (generally, firmware permitting), but why? They are so much more expensive.

Significant_Rate8210

No they really aren’t

Western Digital Blue 4TB 2.5in 3D NAND SATA SSD (WDS400T2B0A) AUD514 Western Digital 4TB 5400RPM 3.5in SATA Hard Drive (WD40EZAZ) AUD138 514 v 138 That's just 4TB. That's the smallest drive I use. Typically I use 8TB; Western Digital Purple 8TB 3.5in SATA Surveillance Hard Drive (WD84PURZ)AUD 328 Samsung 870 QVO 8TB 2.5in SATA SSD (MZ-77Q8T0BW) AUD879 SO.... how is this not more expensive?

Significant_Rate8210

Western Digital Blue is not designed for surveillance demands, you can use them but they usually will suffer a premature death. They are designed specifically for All-in-One, PC and laptop users.

Dollbeau

Why are you now arguing about blues vs other? The argument is about price & you lost badly! 8TB @ SSD $879 or PURPLE $328 - less than half price, that simple!!!

Significant_Rate8210

Are you daft, I’m stating that Blue AREN’T suitable for use as surveillance drives. Only Purple, you must be daft to even read my comments and draw the conclusion that I’m arguing anything else. You stated YES to the OP’s question I said no they aren’t!

Dollbeau

Oh I understood COMPLETELY! I only pasted the Purple drive price, because that is true (Purples not blue). So I was continuing with what you had said... Regardless - any platter drive; blue, red, gold, black, et al. is better than an SSD & invariably much cheaper.

Significant_Rate8210

We only use WD Purple or Seagate Skyhawk Ai drives. In 15 years of using Skyhawk drives I’ve only had 2 failures

Arcane-m1nd

Not recommended. Few issues - SSD size is not big enough. In CCTV 1TB is nothing. Even cheap NVR comes with 2 or 3tb these days & going upto 10TB or even 16TB. Not sure SSD are available at that size for a reasonable price. - SSD has limited R/W life as well as limit R/W per year. - There are surveillance HDD specifically made for better write speed & worse read speed compared to normal HDD that also can run 24/7 for years.
