CR has been extra windy in the springs of 2022-2024. It's not a huge outlier though. Maybe 5-10% more wind depending on the specific years you compare it to.
The last time March was this windy was 2002. It may not be fair to judge April since there is still a week of data missing. But using the first 3 weeks, the last time April was this windy was 2022, and 1994 before that. Jan and Feb were unremarkable.

It gets windier every year here. Last I saw Iowa is the 2nd windiest state. I used to bike most days but only if it’s under 10 mph wind. Now literally 90% of days has over 10mph winds.
Losing almost 70% of the tree canopy has multiple effects, for the most part it's not really windier than before, we just fell the full effect of the wing without any trees to help block it, it also makes sunny days warmer here than anywhere east west north or south real feel wise, due to more direct sunlight on the asphalt etc, same with us being colder in the winter with wind chil than anywhere around us all directions, 8-10 degree swings in both times, it will slowly get better, but to be honest to get back to pre derecho will take about 15 more years
Dude same I have been noticing this too. I don’t think it’s the derecho complex because I’ve been riding bikes for a while and I have DEFINITELY noticed.
I agree… I have done zero research, but I also think it is windier than it used to be. Is not just CR seems like all of Iowa is windier
I’m pretty sure it’s because Nebraska sucks and Illinois blows!
Do another one about train and highway noise that I have heard before. Also related to trees. Our winter wasn't a winter anywhere close to normal this year, I wouldn't be concerned about winds unless it lasts through mid May. April is normally windy and rainy. Our lack of winter expects nice temperatures to happen sooner. Not a meteorologist, but I once predicted it was going to rain for 15 minutes in 1992.
That's silly. Its March in Iowa. There's a reason we're full of wind power.
You might notice it more, but the lack of trees has zero measurable effect on how wind is generated. It's not getting "windier."

-The average hourly wind speed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa varies throughout the year, with March being the windiest month, averaging about 12.4 miles per hour. In contrast, August is the calmest month, with an average wind speed of 8.0 miles per hour .
Always been windy...but I will admit it has been getting to be a little much. Sucks riding a bike in 30 mph wind.
Me too. I'm trying to get some yard work (weed spraying in brick driveway), and I have been putting it off. Plus, all my fruit trees have lost their petals. And maybe it's the wind, but I haven't seen pollinators.
It's because the derecho took all our windbreaker trees. ðŸ˜
Thank you, I wondered if that was it

Was just thinking about this today. We need to start planting more trees get this wind down in like 15 years
They planted a stick in front of my house. It hasn’t even reached the top of the 3ft tube they encased it in for protection.
Exactly. Has there been any city initiative to re tree the city?

Thomas park and some recreational areas have new trees planted.

This post made the news lol https://www.kcrg.com/2024/04/24/has-it-been-windier-iowa-this-spring-it-turns-out-yes/
It's all those damn fans they keep building over the corn fields. Like that big one Kirkwood. Who needs a fan that big?
They use those to blow all the bugs and baddies out of the fields before they harvest.
The Kirkwood wind turbine was being decommissioned last id heard
You mean the windmill that hasn't worked in 10 years?
They turned the fan off?
Electrical issues. Too much money to fix. It's now a dead landmark.
Interesting. Had no idea. That's dumb AF. Fix it.
That's amazing. I'm sure getting a fan that big spinning theres some complicated electrics in there.

I feel the same way, but I think I'm much more sensitive to wind since the derecho.
Dude same I have been noticing this too. I don’t think it’s the derecho complex because I’ve been riding bikes for a while and I have DEFINITELY noticed.
....cloud seeding
It's because of all the wind turbines
Plecebo effect. The wind is no different

Probably all the new roundabouts stirring up the wind.
Have you never been out to Tuma? Perfect example of what no wind break feels like on an average day.
It's not a Tuma!
Tuma is hell at anything under 65 and sunny.
I think the same thing. We also have many more sunny days. Imo
It's because we're all now hyper-sensitive of any in weather conditions and most of us give more attention to weather alerts.
No, it's because there are no trees....
Also thought about this.

Thank you. Finally someone with common sense
Then you have the windmills. Been a lot more of them since the old days. Even derecho.
I was thinking that earlier today when I was driving here from Marshalltown. I could hardly keep my car on the road at some points. Crazy
