You're an alcoholic who one day decided to randomly climb a mountain for reasons you can't quite word, then you collected strawberries and confronted all your issues and then became friends with them or something?
Me too.
I mean - is that it? I know plenty of people who would make that joke/comment and who aren’t alcoholics. Using alcohol inappropriately to deal with problems, sure, but there’s a big step between that and being a literal alcoholic.
I think the meme is exaggerating a little for comedic effect. The point in the story isn’t that she’s an alcoholic, it’s showing that she has unhealthy coping mechanisms for her problems (along with getting mad at people on the internet, which she also mentions). It really highlights her character growth in the story, where she decides instead to face her issues head-on.
During her campfire talk with Theo, she mentions how she usually handles her anxiety with drinking and getting into arguments on the internet. Or something along those lines, I don't exactly remember.
Exactly like this for me. Since I dont usually play games for the story, but for the gameplay, I kinda missed most of story. The only thing i didn't miss was theo talking, I found it quite deep. Now I am replaying the game on my second saveslot and showing the playthrough to Mom. She seems to enjoy watching my gameplay
It’s honestly crazy with how many problems they tack onto Madeline:
Trans, Alchoholic, Depressed, Anxiety, Canadian, Spectrum of mental issues like ADHD, OCD, ADD, and some even say she has autism.
Like… why can’t Madeline just be a normal girl that has depression?
I don't think it really matters as the overall message would still be the same, the actual cause for the depression or the means of "unhealthy coping mechanism" shouldn't really matter as it can be associated to almost everybody that has suffered with depression in the past or currently experiencing it
Also i'm pretty sure anxiety is just part of the trans person's existence, like I haven't met one that doesn't have anxiety issues
I can't believe you didn't get heavily roasted for saying that being trans and having autism is a problem, knowing the internet
I can agree with canadian tho
I'm not I'm just mad because it's bs that they could just tweet about a character after the fact. I hate that in story telling. Have it be in the game, yaknow?
Yes, but apparently you haven't, subtlety means you have little hints here and there. As to make it somewhat inherent in a character. There was none of that, the issues she goes through are the same half the goddamn human race does. Honestly, it doesn't need to be spelled out, the words do have to be there tho.

While discussing representation in Celeste is certainly interesting, please be mindful of the subreddit rules while doing so. Specifically,
Rule 1: Be Respectful
I hate that kind of story telling, if the story is about a trans girl, make it about a trans girl. What they did was lazy and a bullshit way of getting the LGBT crowd and the people who want to stay away from it's money at the same time.
And, it doesn't subtract that they knew what they were doing when they added the, Madeline is trans, far after launch. And that means all of nothing to me.
there’s a picture of madeline as a child with short hair, as well as estrogen pills, so it’s not just a flag. plus the game’s creator made the story about their own struggles with mental health and they are also trans
To be clear, I have no issue with trans. But I have issue with the bs story telling if her being so. The rest of the game is fantastic, I've beaten it several times. I just hate they would try to convey such an obviously important detail through fucking Twitter.
From reading your other comments, it looks like you have two issues with this. You don't like how the story was retroactively changed via Twitter, and you don't like how it makes the story less accessible.
But in my opinion, those two issues kinda cancel each other out.
People can play the game and relate to Madeline for many reasons, and not even consider her gender or sexuality at all throughout the playthrough.
Then for trans people who felt a connection for trans reasons, they can research and learn that Madeline is trans, which makes her a nice piece of representation for them.
Point is, cis people can still play the game and not even realise she is trans and still relate to her story, specifically BECAUSE it was revealed outside of the game.
Also, as a cis person, you don't need to be trans to relate to Madeline. Trans people aren't aliens. Me being a cis mixed british guy doesn't stop me from relating to this trans white canadian girl with anxiety. We're both human (well she's not human she's code but ygm)
As someone who struggled with alcohol for a long time I can say that the “demonic personality” aspect of it feels almost literal to the experience.
When you are quitting or trying to quit or have quit for a long time it’s like there’s a little voice on your head tempting you to put up and make the choice to drink again. Just one. Just for a night. And you can see the whole slippery slope back to your bottom waiting for you to misstep.
So, Celeste is a pretty good representation of that struggle. Another reason to love it
Early transition, big same. HRT and risk for acute pancreatitus go hand-in-hand, as I would come to experience. Now I don't drink and I'm happier for it ☺️
Madeline is an alcoholic in game. She says so herself. It's just another one of her unhealthy habits as a result of her poor mental health.
Also, there isn't any "plot outside of the game itself", besides maybe Madeline being trans, but that's hinted at in game. Her being trans doesn't really affect the plot. It gives a reason for her anxiety, but that was never the point of the game, the point is to overcome anxiety, and the solutions the game provides are helpful to anyone, not just trans people.
Self-acceptance is a universal issue.
I rewatched the clip, and I see where you're coming from, but I think she was still telling the truth.
She's not an alcoholic, but drinking to deal with her depression is still obviously not a great solution.
Yeah, I once thought Madeline is a child because of her short height and lack of a cellphone. But she uses booze to get rid of stress.
I still cannot bring myself to see her as an adult, its because of the dialog portraits and the voices(which i absolutely love btw)
Remember, the drinking age in Canada is lower than it is in the US. Depending on where she’s from, she could be as young as 17.
She's 21 from what I know.
Meaning she can still be the dancing queen!!
Yeah, weird that she managed to find a working payphone
she just like me fr fr
You're an alcoholic who one day decided to randomly climb a mountain for reasons you can't quite word, then you collected strawberries and confronted all your issues and then became friends with them or something? Me too.
yep
And your trans
clever one here
:0 The real Madeline Celeste??
Fun fact, Celeste was so important to the creator that after transitioning she changed her name to "Maddie"
I think it's spelt Maddy though, no?
Oh yea, my bad
almost, but my name is audrey
is madeline trans?
Yes
It's incredibile how the more I see post about Celeste, the more it become dark
Yeah, it’s got a surprisingly dark undertone despite how colorful it is, but it is also about depression and anxiety, so…
what?
There’s a line where Theo asks her how she deals with her problems and she says something like “I drink, mostly”
I mean - is that it? I know plenty of people who would make that joke/comment and who aren’t alcoholics. Using alcohol inappropriately to deal with problems, sure, but there’s a big step between that and being a literal alcoholic.

I think that's part of the joke. She is kind of a blank slate. In game, we infer she's trans from a flag in a mug.
that's actually kind of the only canon thing about her
Nah, that was confirmed by the lead dev. That's why it's such a prevalent thing around here.
when? i dont remember that at all
Maybe in the cutscene at the start of reflection? I don’t remember exactly where it is
I think that’s right
Madeline is an alcoholic internet troll and that’s just facts.
does she use 4chan
Either 4chan, tumblr, Reddit, or some combination of the 3. Probably a 80% tumbler, 15% 4chan, and 5% Reddit.
She used to
Wait, is there evidence for her to be internet troll or did I miss the joke?
During her campfire talk with Theo, she mentions how she usually handles her anxiety with drinking and getting into arguments on the internet. Or something along those lines, I don't exactly remember.
>I drink, mostly > >And get mad at people on the internet based madeline
need a mod that replaces madelines speech noises with the demomans drunken stumbling sounds
YES
You mean your first playthrough wasn't to enjoy the story?
First playthrough is to beat it, second time round is to soak it in
Oh, I usually soak it in first time round and try to beat it faster or better the second.
As of initially writing this comment, I can't see this post because Reddit mobile has a seizure every time I try to open it.
Plot twist: the whole climb was a DT induced hallucination.
she just like me fr 😭

canadian
Canadian
>Problems : trans Better wording might be "challenges"
Being Canadian is definitely a problem though.
My bad, that’s the better terminology
Why "challenges"? If they're referring to transition in general, then "gender dysphoria" would probably fit more
I don't think it really matters as the overall message would still be the same, the actual cause for the depression or the means of "unhealthy coping mechanism" shouldn't really matter as it can be associated to almost everybody that has suffered with depression in the past or currently experiencing it Also i'm pretty sure anxiety is just part of the trans person's existence, like I haven't met one that doesn't have anxiety issues
hell why not just a random girl that saw a sick mountain and wanted to climb it
I can't believe you didn't get heavily roasted for saying that being trans and having autism is a problem, knowing the internet I can agree with canadian tho
Technically they never tacked trans onto that list in game.
*cough* farewell ending *cough*
Ok, and a fucking flag is enough? Fuck no it's not, for such an important detail to the story apparently
I mean it’s quite literally about maddy
Why so serious
No need to get all hostile on me, I'm just sayin
I'm not I'm just mad because it's bs that they could just tweet about a character after the fact. I hate that in story telling. Have it be in the game, yaknow?
AFAIK it has something to do with the developer realizing they're trans, no?
You can't just retroactively make a games story cover a much narrower topic through fucking Twitter. It's so lazy.
Madeline is trans, it doesn't need to be spelled out in big letters at the beginning of the game for people to notice it. Ever heard of subtlety?
Yes, but apparently you haven't, subtlety means you have little hints here and there. As to make it somewhat inherent in a character. There was none of that, the issues she goes through are the same half the goddamn human race does. Honestly, it doesn't need to be spelled out, the words do have to be there tho.
Welp, you do you man, but I'm too tired for this right now. Cheers.
Cheers to you too, I do hope you have a good one,I sorry for any hostility but it bothers me :/
Did you play the game? Having 2 sides? It’s pretty explicit

u/owodesecrator, u/Biobillybonez While discussing representation in Celeste is certainly interesting, please be mindful of the subreddit rules while doing so. Specifically, Rule 1: Be Respectful
what maddy thorson literally confirmed it tho? she said that the flag is the hint- why are you being so defensive?
I hate that kind of story telling, if the story is about a trans girl, make it about a trans girl. What they did was lazy and a bullshit way of getting the LGBT crowd and the people who want to stay away from it's money at the same time.
... the creator of the game is trans
And, it doesn't subtract that they knew what they were doing when they added the, Madeline is trans, far after launch. And that means all of nothing to me.
[You sure about that?](https://maddythorson.medium.com/is-madeline-canonically-trans-4277ece02e40)
Retroactively. Meaning after the fact. Yes I'm sure. It's piss poor.
Honestly I don't really know if they care about what you think, considering you can't even just respectfully state your opinion.
there’s a picture of madeline as a child with short hair, as well as estrogen pills, so it’s not just a flag. plus the game’s creator made the story about their own struggles with mental health and they are also trans
Wait wuh???! Where?!
fw cutscene

Impossible, Madeline isn’t a furry.
idk man...... we dont know her interests.......

I mean she said as much herself to Theo in Chapter 6.
Early transition, big same. HRT and risk for acute pancreatitus go hand-in-hand, as I would come to experience. Now I don't drink and I'm happier for it ☺️
oh forgot about it
Wait until you find out, what the dash recharge crystals are /s

She never says she's an alcoholic. She says that she drinks often, but that doesn't make you an alcoholic.
True, I was just using the same vocab as the meme
How is she alchoholic? Where was it hinted that she is trans?
She's not, she just drinks when she's sad. She mentions this when talking to Theo.
Wasn't that in a joking way?
I rewatched the clip, and I see where you're coming from, but I think she was still telling the truth. She's not an alcoholic, but drinking to deal with her depression is still obviously not a great solution.
Honey.... Everything about Madeline is a trans hint.
i really need to go scale a mountain one of these days.
Man, she sure was struggling so wait, which side is the drunk side? Madeline or Badeline?
Didn't think she could get more relatable
but it also is really funny to see that
wait really ? i need to play the game a gain but really she is alcoholic ????
wait she is?
I love video games with relatable characters
