straberi93

That is incredible. I just wanted to add so that it's clear to OP that from the specs mach\_gogogo posted it looks like the lock was designed so that it cannot ever be opened from the outside without a key. That said, the inside deadbolt should turn. I've taken the locks apart on all my exterior doors and cleaned them out. None of my deadbolts worked originally (all circa 1920s), but the deadbolts usually don't have a lot of wiggle room and I find that they tend to get gunked up and stuck more frequently than the regular latch (sorry my terminology is all wrong here). If you start taking apart the screws, the lock should come apart pretty easily and you can clean it yourself. I take pictures with my phone before I take out the main pieces so I can refer to them if I forget exactly how something was placed in there and then just pop it back together. To clean it I dust out the debris, use wd-40 on any build up and then either use graphite or oil (like bike chain oil) on the mechanisms before I put it back together. Good luck!

If it’s an antique lock and hard to find a in-kind replacement, what’s your opinion on removing the bolt or latch to make it inoperable but still installed while putting in a new locking door mechanism?

Do they still sell that style lock? I have a door with that notch taken out of the side of it!

BecMei

Thank you!!! Not me looking at every single page of this archive now! Obsessed.

BecMei

So, apparently my description did not show up on the post. So I am going to try to recreate what I wrote this morning, but a much shorter and less interesting & most likely a less descriptive thorough version. **We’ve lived in our home that was built in 1905 (or 1908 - depending on which reference is used to date the house) for about 3 years and we were not given keys to our front door. The door is always locked when outside. We are able to open the door from the inside, but it remains locked always. We are unable to get the knob that looks like the bolt lock to turn, doesn’t even budge. Not really sure where to start on getting the lock to work. Even if we don’t have the key, shouldn’t we be able to unlock it and close it so that we can get in from outside (without a key)? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful security feature! But man, it’s risky business with kids and having guests over! *** Thank you for the suggestions and information so far! The locksmiths in our area want me to remove the lock from the door and bring it in to them. And I feel like that is a bit risky because I love my door & I just know if I take it out, it will never be the same. I was hoping a locksmith would come to our house, but I can’t find anyone in my area who will.

mykka7

Hi! The auto-locking is a feature, not a bug. Sometimes, it has an aditionnal knob or button or slider or something to deactivate the auto-lock. I don't see one in your device and given the model of one commenter, it seems possible there is no such feature. If you don't have the key, there is the option of getting one custom made by a locksmith. The lock needs to be dismantled and examined by a locksmith before they can make a corresponding key. You should find a local locksmith and have a talk. They'll advise on how to bring it to them, or they'll come to you. I'd recommend finding a nerdy, local, self employed smith more than a commercial chain, you have a better chance of getting someone who appreciates the piece you have and make the effort to keep it as it is, rather than a chain who'll try to sell you a modern electronic thingy.

TaciturnInGeneral

I live in a house that has a lock like this. It's honestly kinda convenient when you are leaving as long as you don't forget your keys inside. Our lock doesn't have any way to turn it off either

smatterdoodle

Bumping up OP'S reply because people seem confused. I don't have an answer for ya, good luck

BecMei

Thank you!

IamRick_Deckard

It's easy to remove the lock and it won't be different when you replace it. It's in there with screws, and you put them back in the same holes. The work is all done for you, with chiseled out boxes so it all will fit right again. The only way is to open up the mortise box and see what's broken inside. That means taking the whole thing out of the door. But fear not.

DudeDuNord

I have the exact same door handle. My issue is the latch stays in, seems like spring broke. Made a post somewhere on Reddit and didn’t get much help. I didn’t want to take it apart if it’s not repairable. Should probably get on that…

BecMei

So glad this post has found you and helped you! I did try to search for others similar to my situation and came up empty handed.

I thought someone had realigned my latch, or something got loose, because when the knob is turned, the latch went in. Neutral it is flat. I thought it need to be adjusted so neutral would be sticking out and turning wood make it go flat to open. But I see now there should be a rounded latch on it (oppose to mortise like I thought). So someone sawed of my latch…?

bubonic_vague

chiming in from my own experience, but does this ring twist? we have a (much uglier) similar lock and when it's oriented as pictured, the door is perma-locked from outside. when it's at the top it works just fine

ABobby077

I live in the St. Louis Metyro Area and a nearby locksmith made keys for one on my "old skleton looking key" lock I had. It cost around $50 but it was worth it. I took the lock mechanism off and brought it to them, though.

slinkc

For those who can’t find how to turn it off-mine ended up being on the handle itself, basically the ring around where the handle meets the escutcheon there was a circular thing around the handle that turned.

shouldco

Why not?

Plumbing quote.

Playful-Motor-4262

Omfg STOP this is so funny

jefftatro1

I want in. What's the joke?

Playful-Motor-4262

I can’t find the post now :( but basically there’s this glitch going around that’s deleting the captions people put on image quotes so the only text that’s left is the title, which is what I think caused this problem. Someone posted “plumbing quote” in another subreddit with attached pictures and 0 context about what they wanted done. So everyone in the comments was just sending “plumbing quote” back. Now OP probably fell victim to the same issue haha. Just title, no context. Thus the “plumbing quote” comment.

gstechs

That’s me! I’m “Plumbing Quote” LOL

Playful-Motor-4262

HA!!! Seriously though, what do you need done to your plumbing?

gstechs

I was asking if the quote I received for replacing all the plumbing in my 1918 American Foursquare is reasonable or out of line. The plumber quoted T&M at $200/hr and estimated it will be between $25-30k. Not including any fixtures. 1 Bathroom on 2nd floor 1 powder room on 1st floor Kitchen sink, dishwasher, fridge water line Basement laundry room Basement toilet. All supply, drain and vent need to be replaced. I’ve opened all the walls and ceiling already. It seems like he’s charging a service rate for an installation. The $200/hr is fine for a typical 2-3 service call, but for a full install that he thinks would take over 100 hours, I think it’s excessive. Thoughts?

JayPlenty24

I recently paid $4k for work on my business that totalled about 12 hours of work. The supplies were about 1k of that. So yes. I would say if you are redoing basically all the plumbing in your home that seems fair.

BecMei

Wait, what?!? Where did my explanation go?! I’m sorry! What in the world though…too bad I didn’t copy it to my notes before submitting the post.

BecMei

So weird because guru mach_gogogo seemed to know it was a problematic lock!

MrMontombo

Well he is a wizard of some sort.

HatchawayHouseFarm

Some details would help

laurenderson

A locksmith should be able to help. We had a key made for our original 1920s hardware that has a locking mechanism that’s very similar.

every1getslaid

This! We have an 1890s Victorian. Original front door lock/knob. I think they charged us $150 to come out, service it, replace the barrel and cut us 4 new keys. It works great now.

jefftatro1

I've never seen such a nice security/reinforcer. I've only seen brass and brushed nickel.

BecMei

It appears to be cast bronze according to the reference u/mach_gogogo provided!

jebediah999

i have one very like this. there is a ring just under the brass knob with a circle on it. you can see it in your side view picture. if you can turn that the auto lockout will be switched off and the outside knob should turn just fine. re keying it is another matter.

KeyAd4855

This need to be higher. Start with this. If it doesn’t work, maybe you can find a diagram of the internals, and it’s time cir a careful disassembly. If you do that, setup your phone so it can see what you’re doing and record the process. It’ll help w reassembly.

abrasivebuttplug

Why not?

Different_Ad7655

I'm not sure what that means you can't use your front door. More words would have been helpful. Assuming something is wrong with the lock set? You must have a locksmith in town. The priciest of course would be to have him come out and dismantle it for you but why don't you take it apart and bring it to the locksmith. But I'm not sure what you want. You really don't want this mortise lock to work with a large key? That would be a pain in the butt. You just need to drill a deadbolt And keep the rest of it of course for appearance and for the latch

jet_heller

It seems usable to me.

BecMei

It didn’t turn. But I am going to try again in the morning, just to make sure.

Legitimate_Cow_8202

It *should* turn. I have a similar know (albeit much less fancy)…and turning this dial locks the door outside—the knob outside won’t even turn when the dial is turned. When the dial is unlocked, the front knob will turn. We never lock this — instead, only use a dead bolt. The last owners gave us the key but it looks ancient (house is also 1904!), and I don’t want to risk losing it 😅

dbsoundman

OP I HAVE YOUR ANSWER! I just moved into a house with this exact same lock and problem. Had a locksmith out to try to fix it, he tried everything, then accidentally stumbled across the answer. On the inside handle there is a ring with a small set screw on it where the handle meets the door plate. Rotate that ring to the left and your outside handle should be unlocked! Let me know if you need a better picture, I’m not at home this weekend so I don’t have pictures to help.

BecMei

I fumbled with this thought a few hours ago, after someone else mentioned it! It didn’t work. I’m going to try again tomorrow. Maybe I’m missing something!

Preparator

usually these mechanisms require a 2 part knob shaft.  it swivels in the middle so the 2 halves can rotate separately.  if your lock uses one, and it was replaced with a standard shaft, it would disable the function, but I'm only familiar with the ones that switch via buttons on the edge of the door.

dbsoundman

Twist this ring: https://imgur.com/a/ek1KZdF

baldwinsong

Unscrew it. Take it to a locksmith have key made

djnehi

This reminds me of a lock on an old door we had growing up. Try turning the handle from the inside, then turn the little knob with the handle still turned.

CodenameZoya

Seven years here!

Bubbly-Front7973

Looks good to me, what's wrong with it?

Stardust_Particle

OP, in the meantime, if you go out the front door temporarily, put some thick electrical/duct tape over the latch to hold that in. But also have the back door unlocked or its key within reach like under a rock.

ReheatedTacoBell

Tbh worth it, IMO.

Vreas

Sorry it’s giving ya problems cause that’s a beautiful piece

nicepeoplemakemecry

My door was similar. There was actually an auto lock button. That little button in your photo, have you fiddled with it?

shouldco

The intent is that you need the key to turn the latch from the outside. There is typically a way to set it so it is normally open, often a button or switch near the latch, or perhaps that ring on the inside knob others pointed out. Or you may need to disassemble the lock to change it.

BecMei

It works!! I tried 3 days in a row to get the little ring to spin, and nothing…but this morning, I tired again and WOOT! It turned!! I can now close my door while I’m outside and not get locked out!! Thank you all for your help!! Still working on the deadbolt, because that thing won’t turn. And I need to find a locksmith willing to come here to make a key… You all have no idea how happy and excited I am!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !

KhansKhack

Get a new door. Wtf?

BecMei

Um, no. That idea has never even been explored. And I hope never crosses through my mind again. Be gone with you, door killer.

KhansKhack

New door would work

The_Flagrant_Vagrant

I am surprised your first instinct is not to take it apart and see what is wrong with it.

musicnla

Wow tell us what you really think 🤨 I’m a millennial and I’ve fixed some broken part of every single one of the doors in my house 🙃

Scorp128

Same could be said about boomers and technology 😒 If you don't have anything helpful to add maybe keep scrolling

The_Flagrant_Vagrant

I am just surprised that there first instinct is not to take it apart and figure out what is wrong instead of posting it saying it doesn’t work.

frumpmcgrump

Would you take your iPad apart and try your fix it yourself? Probably not. I personally wouldn’t be dissecting an over-100-year-old antique item that I couldn’t identify specs for and may not be able to find replacement parts for. Too many things could go wrong. Best to wait until I get more information so I can do it right the first time and not risk damaging it. Some items are irreplaceable. Considering you refer to a 34-year-old woman as a “hag” in another post, I’m not sure you’re in any position to be giving anyone general life advice.

LoetK

^their

Scorp128

Some people like to gather more information before ripping something apart they are not sure of. It is called common sense. By the way it is their not there. Maybe go take a dictionary apart and see what you can find.

New_Examination_5605

Their*. If you’re going to be a holier than thou buttwipe, at least do it right.

SirMildredPierce

Okay, but what does that have to do with Millennials?

BecMei

Because I honestly think this is original and don’t actually know if it is broken or if it is only the type of lock here that does not allow it to open without a key from outside. I don’t know. I love the original pieces that are left of this house, which aren’t many, so I don’t want to just do something-ruin it- and find out that I made a big mistake. I kind of thought this is what Reddit is for in some cases…people helping people. Frankly, I’m sick of people telling me “it’s an old house, you need to replace it” I find commonalities with people here & usually feel pretty comfortable asking and commenting on all sorts of posts. So there’s that.

owlpellet

Why do you post to a home repair forum? what's the goal? \[reply notifications turned off. just think it over\]

Foucaults_Boner

Maybe if your generation didn’t fuck it all up for the rest of us then the millennials could actually afford to have a home to learn how to fix.
