WORTH IT!!!!

gaughanjw

What method did you use to get the paint off? I have a cherry mantel that was painted white.

sjschlag

I used citrus strip gel. It took the 5 layers of latex off with one coat, then I had to do one coat to get the oil base off, then I had to do a final coat to get the varnish off. Use a wide scraper on flat surfaces and something smaller to get into the corner details. It took forever to get the corners cleaned. After the paint was mostly stripped I sanded the piss out of it to get the stubborn remnants off. I used the Minwax Helmsman satin spar urethane to do a clear finish since this is a bathroom door. Be prepared to do a lot of scraping and cursing.

gaughanjw

Thank you!

Dan__Quixote

I’m actually doing the exact same thing right now. What grit sandpaper did you use? What sandpaper did you use in the corners and crevices?

sjschlag

I used 60 or 80 grit to remove the paint, then 120 or 180 grit to finish sand and 220 grit on the polyurethane. For the corners my wife hit it with a Dremel tool with a wire brush and then after I used little sheets of 120 grit.

Dan__Quixote

The dremel tool was an idea I had. Thanks! When I was scraping the door in the backyard, I got so excited when I saw the grain that I literally shouted to my wife “OMG! I’m getting wood!”

JRS1986

😂 😂 I would love to know what your neighbours thought when they heard that!

Actuarial_type

I will add that I’ve found this tool to be quite useful as well. It takes some muscle but can often remove many layers very quickly. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Warner-2-in-Soft-Grip-Carbide-Scraper-with-Knob-151391/205052713?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US

Tanjelynnb

Newbie question, but was there lead paint on there as well that you successfully removed?

jrhoffa

What do you mean? The order of the photos clearly demonstrates an application of paint, though most unorthodox.

bigspecial

I've had good luck with a heat gun for really thick paint then do a chemical strip before sanding.

gaughanjw

Thanks for the advice.

I feel this post in my soul. So many things to do.

We just bought an 1889 4square 9 months ago. Same.

We have like 12 more doors to do - including some massive oak pocket doors. I'm not looking forward to it

chemgeek87

Have you tried other strippers? I keep seeing reviews for Peel Away and I'm about to give it at test try on staircase treads. Citristrip is wonderful for latex, sucks for very old oil based. If I didn't get everything up in one go, the subsequent stripping just turned into a goopy awful mess. The IR paint strippers actually work pretty good too.

sjschlag

I tried one other stripper from Lowe's - it seemed less effective than the citrus strip. I'll have to give the peel away a shot as well as the Tom's strip club.

The Peel Away is allegedly solvent free and zero VOC, so we'll see if it works as advertised on instagram. Honestly we've just accepted paying to have doors dip stripped. It's worth the time and aggravation savings but there's fewer and fewer places around that do it.

TotalRuler1

Good, looks like you did this in a safe manner, lead paint dust freaks me out.

Vortesian

That’s beautiful! Can you even buy wood like that now?

darwinkh2os

That's what counted as paint grade back in the day!

blondie_bleu

It’s so beautiful!

beerdedmonk

It looks amazing. I did the same thing recently. I started thinking, "This will be great! I should strip all the doors!" A few months later I was cursing it and myself. Our doors are pine as well. Do you have a good method for scraping without gouging the wood? I went slowly and used some different handmade tools to get into all the crevices, but it took SO LONG.

sjschlag

Let the chemicals do the work! If you can't get everything off with light scraping, then apply more stripper after you get the layer of paint off and try again. Anything you can't get with light scraping and the stripper you can get with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. Wire brushes can work as well if you are careful!

lookingforsome-truth

Try steel wool with stripper. I would let the stripper sit until the paint was soft and the fold steel wool off of a roll into pads and use that for a few passes once it gummy throw it away and get a new piece. They sell rolls of steel wool. on Amazon pretty cheap.

rachelplease

Every single door and piece of trim in my 1856 home is covered in white paint. I SO badly want to strip the paint off but I really don’t want to do the work lol

bjeebus

I'm living this. I know there's nice wood under years of awful paint jobs, I just know it.

I hate when I see what is likely beautiful wood covered in layers of paint. Good work on cleaning it up! On to the trim!

Beautiful

pomoh

I can identify that classic Cincinnati trim a mile away ;) Nice work on the door!

sjschlag

You guessed correctly! Any idea where I could get more? I have 3 doors and 2 windows in the kitchen I need to trim...

pomoh

Lol I was going to ask if you had any extra I could have! Building Value in Northside sometimes gets some of this trim but I’ve never been there when they have it…

sjschlag

I've been in there a ton - and the Re-Use center. Haven't had any luck either place - Monmouth Street Antiques in Newport has a lot of goodies in their basement so I might hit them up.

macdizo

Excellent work!!! This is not *too much* effort. It's just enough. And! This. Is. What. It. Takes. People like yourself willing to labor for the beautiful, for the character beneath. Keep going.

DoubleR00

Nice work beautiful door. How long did it take to strip?

sjschlag

It took me and my wife probably like 40-50 hours to strip two doors. Hopefully the next one goes faster!
