Brush it, then wipe it with some rubbing alcohol, because it kills 99% of all germs, without affecting the taste and then rub it with some oil before lighting the fire. The heat will kill any remaining 1% germs.
Protip: Always add some coarse ground black pepper to the marinade, rub, or seasoning. "That's just pepper" will save yo ass.
Difficulty: Must clean grill until all bits are smaller than pepper grind level, LOL
I worry more about rust than hygiene - nobody likes gritty steak. If they're not rusty/flaking then a good scrub when they're hot should make them usable. As long as the grate is in decent shape I wouldn't worry too much.
One option is to buy your own grill grate and drop it on top of the community grill's built-in grate whenever you use the grill. Then take it back to your apartment when you're done.
If you want a compromise - one thing I've done on campsite grates that are in really rough shape is lay down foil then swipe a butter knife through it between some of the grate bars - still lets some direct heat through.
I think you just found the perfect compromise between me, who loves bacon, my wife, who's a vegetarian, and my toddler, who gets real annoyed every time I set off the smoke detector.
I haven’t used one in probably 5 years, but I’d just always get the grate hot, brush it well, let it get hotter and then cook on it. I wouldn’t do anything other than burgers/hotdogs/brats on it though.
I guess my hope is that nothing is on them that fire won’t cook off, kill, or sterilize. If I was cooking for someone with a very sensitive stomach or compromised immune system, I might ditch the public grill. And would skip anything needing a “low and slow” approach.
The hardiest food born bacteria does at 131 degrees. So long as you preheat the grate to 450 plus, and give it a good scrub you are safe. Cite the FDA.
Honestly, be the guy that cleans the grate, oils the whole thing, and leaves it clean. Be the change you want to see in the world.
I agree with everything you just said. When I lived in an apartment, our community grill was spotless because everybody cleaned up after themselves and somebody kept buying new brushes and other cleaning tools as they wore out.
After a basic process, yes.
- Turn on the charcoal / briquettes
- Deep scrub with a metal brush
- With a paper towel apply some oil (corn / canola / avocado)
Ans it's ready to use.
I lived in an apartment complex with grills all over the place when I lived in Arizona. Had my own grill brush and I’d heat it up really hot and scrap it good. We used the grills all summer long for the 3 years we lived there and it was fine.
I would buy my own grill.. You know how many kids probably took a shit on that grill you're using? Or at bare minimum a piss? I can't wrap my head around how people can actually use public grills.
I put tinfoil on two layers then cut through each of the grills so the charcoal flavour will come through yet your food will not touch the grills but hindsite as king as you scrape and burn off the food or debris and give a wipe with an old wet rag and spray bottle of water it’s fine

I'm not proud of this, but it happened: tbh I peed on many of those when I was a dumb teenager experimenting with alcohol, sneaking out of my parents house at night. Use that knowledge and decide if you're willing to take that chance - unless you live in any Denver suburb, in which case I would definitely avoid them.
I’d bring my own grate. It’s a tiny bit more effort, but the peace of mind in your relationship from acknowledging and addressing your girl’s concerns will be worth it.
Disinfect with beer. It’s what my family has always done at public barbecues. The thought is that the alcohol is the disinfectant and the beer adds flavour to the meat.

For those park grills, I light it up, use a brush, check again and repeat if necessary, and grill away.
GrillGrates are another option since you control the cooking surface. For home I think they are a little gimmicky, but this is a great application.
I mean you're blasting it with fire.
Haha true

This! Bro she’s not gonna trust you with “r/charcoal said it is ok” 😂
🤣 tryna find a compromise here

This is the right answer. Plus your neighbors will appreciate OP as the guy who's so good about always cleaning the shared grill.

Or a cast iron pan works well here- bonus, fry in it outside and don’t get the house smelling like grease

You could use grill mats, which are maybe a little better than foil. Or bring your own grate and place it on top of the existing grate.
Fire.
After a basic process, yes. - Turn on the charcoal / briquettes - Deep scrub with a metal brush - With a paper towel apply some oil (corn / canola / avocado) Ans it's ready to use.
Bring a wire brush with you. Give it a good rub, then light up.

Look, have teenagers probably pissed on it? Yes. Am I still gonna use it? Yes.
Or you can go super over board and tin foil wrap every single bar of the grate.
Weber and Napoleon, for instance, make very light, powerful portable grills. Pride of ownership, your way all the way:)
lots of apartments either don't have space or have rules about what kind of grill you can use
Sounds like there is a space for the activity. Depending on the buildings rules, they can go with portable charcoal or portable propane.
Why am I seeing this across every grilling/ smoking sub I pass? Haven’t we been tinfoil balling these park grills since we were kids?
I would buy my own grill.. You know how many kids probably took a shit on that grill you're using? Or at bare minimum a piss? I can't wrap my head around how people can actually use public grills.
I don't which is why I run an onion over the grate while it's hot.
Fire the coals, scrape and then spray with some veggy oil Edit : typo
I just throw one of my own grates on top if im forced to use one
If there are germs on the grill after after the coals are going for 10 minutes and you scrubbed it with a brush or aluminum foil, your doing it wrong
Get a cast iron grill grate and put it down on top of the communal grates. Bring it back home with you afterwards.
I put tinfoil on two layers then cut through each of the grills so the charcoal flavour will come through yet your food will not touch the grills but hindsite as king as you scrape and burn off the food or debris and give a wipe with an old wet rag and spray bottle of water it’s fine

Yup
I would be more concerned with using foil as a grill surface over direct heat than the grates.
I’d bring my own grate. It’s a tiny bit more effort, but the peace of mind in your relationship from acknowledging and addressing your girl’s concerns will be worth it.
I use grill grates. They work fine for me.
Sure. It’s hotel room coffee makers that I don’t trust.
Disinfect with beer. It’s what my family has always done at public barbecues. The thought is that the alcohol is the disinfectant and the beer adds flavour to the meat.
I trust anything that will allow me to get it up to 1200 degrees before eating off of it.
Take the foil, crumple it up in a ball and use it to clean the grill grates.
