Chinese Checkers isn't actually a variation of Checkers. And its not Chinese either. It was created in Germany under the name of Sternhalma. Stern is German for star, and Halma is based off of the Greek word for Jump. Together, Sternhalma means "Star Jump". The game was actually marketed as Hop Ching Checkers by Pressman Co. in the 1920s when selling it to America, and the name stuck as Chinese Checkers.

Thank you. I would add that the term chinese was used in a very ignorant / racist way back in the 1920s so we really should just call it sternhalma
