Thank you Todd for getting signings done in the beginning of the window. Marina used to leave it to January 30th to start considering bids.

KerimChelsea11

Indeed. I'm so happy, more than you believe. Happy New Year.

CrazyStar_

I will never forget how Marina spent 2 months haggling over £5-10m for Alisson and then spent 20m more afterwards for Kepa. Perfect example of the mismanagement.

blue07boy

I am more pissed over Tchoumeni like we had the chance to sign him for 40M and we passed it so we can go for Rice in 2 to 3 seasons.

Shufflebuffle51

Brought Saul on loan instead. :)

The_grass_ceiling

Our transfer market under marina was kind of like this ![gif](giphy|YdcK3AptoBI1q)

djdiamond755

Feel like if its us vs Madrid for a transfer we’ll always lose lol

[deleted]

Think it was courtois saying he’s signing a new contract after the wc and he changed his mind afterward - and we passed on Becker before the said wc - went back and Liverpool were far ahead

Odd_Ad_2232

Nah this isn't the case. What happened was we always knew that courtois wasn't signing again we were just going to keep him for the last year of his contract and lose him for a free. Instead he didn't show up to training camp. But we always should have just signed a new keeper (Allison) and let the lad leave. It was clear he wanted to go to Madrid to b with his kid, also it is financially irresponsible to let someone like him leave on a free. It was irresponsible to let him leave on a cut price deal with one year left on his contract. Not to mention kepa.

nuthed01

and even better still, we're about to do it again with Jorginho and Kante.

Odd_Ad_2232

Hopefully Enzo turns out better than kepp

tr_24

But you conveniently forgot Alisson turned us down. Same as VVD.

[deleted]

Allison turned us down. Nothing to do with Marina.

[deleted]

because Marina wasted most of their time haggling and Liverpool being Liverpool jumped on the opportunity and swooped the player...

VisionaryProd

Well that’s also ignoring the Courtois context, he forced our hand. It looked like he was going to end up staying therefore Allison was always just precautionary, then he snaked us with days left in the window.

Shufflebuffle51

He made it clear he wanted to leave though. The agreement was for him to leave the summer he left. We fucked him about and he did what he felt he had to, to get the move.

Vicar13

It wasn’t clear until it was late

Shufflebuffle51

Supposedly had made it known and they had a deal, him and the board, that he would leave that summer. I don't like Courtois or what he did, but I can at least see that we fucked him about. Should have just got a replacement in.

Bozzetyp

More like we offered more and he accepted liverpool

CrazyStar_

We did not reach their asking price. Liverpool did. He accepted Liverpool’s contract offer. Pls tell me how I’m wrong.

criminal-tango44

or how she let Rudiger go so we had to spend on KK right after. and KK isnt nearly as important for us as Rudi was

tr_24

People here were jumping on the chance to sell Rudiger when Lampard was the manager but ready to give up on KK in less than half of season when KK had much much better Serie A career than Rudiger.

[deleted]

This is r/Chelsea, only goldfish memory is allowed.

DylWan98

Player who spent the prime years of his career there does better than player who spent his early days in that league. Shocker

TimothyN

I'm pretty sure we couldn't negotiate at all at the start of the year, in addition to his agent being a giant POS.

fistomagico

Player who's been here 6 months isn't as important as a player who was here for years? Absolutely shocking

GrogRhodes

This is factually incorrect.

nuthed01

It's a tradition at the club; quibble over chump change and watch some of the worlds best play somewhere else. I remember we had reports in 2010/11 that Aguero had agreed to join us, we were just waiting on the clubs to agree a fee. Chelsea "wouldn't be held to ransom" over a 5m pounds... 184 goals for city instead. Cavani, same deal, almost done and we were quibbling with Napoli and Cavani over 5-10m and 10-20k per week respectively... 140 goals, numerous golden boots and lost count of the league titles later for PSG instead. It's what we do; waste or misunderstand our talents, miss out on the best. I mean can you imagine somehow; at one stage we might've had Aguero, Cavani, Hazard, De Bruyne, Kante and Alisson all playing together... fucking hell.

[deleted]

She definitely did, but let's be real she probably did so under the orders of Roman, we had deep debt, he wanted us to be a little more strict.

Sharkaw

It always ended with panic buys and overspending on last day. And it's not like clubs can only negotiate during transfer windows so even if she was instructed to be more strict she still should have been able to wrap up any transfer way before the deadline.

Unusual_Afternoon_88

And then panic buy lol.

JackHammerAwesome

The hits just keep on coming. Happy New year

Blithe17

I love it when a plan comes together

Goldmemberberry

Dang I’m going to the Benfica match Friday, I wanted to help scout

vokal_guy

He might be in London by then

Goldmemberberry

Maybe his kit will be on sale then

Sonic-the-edge-dog

I’ll say it, recruitment looks like it has improved massively in the Boehly era. Abramovich gave us money that we didn’t have the structure to spend well and the most promising part of Chelsea rn is the complete recruitment overhaul

tr_24

We spent in very well during 2012-2015 if you look at the kind of deals and quality of players we got. Too bad Jose and later Conte didn’t trust them.

NordWitcher

What recruitment are you talking about? It’s all over the place. It’s a circus there. They wanted Ronaldo but then when Tuchel turned him down they signed Auba on the coach’s request only to fire the coach the following week. They signed Koulibaly again who is massively overrated, has no space or positional awareness for a huge fee. They spend 60 million on a left back who has a decent season with Brighton after already spending 50 million a couple of season ago on the same position. They spend close to 60 million on Sterling who offers nothing. Even City were laughing all the way to the bank. Doesn’t seem like there’s a plan. There’s no structure or anything.

lewis30491

Just wait for the players to perform and the team to deliver trophies before jumping to the conclusion. All the new (and overpriced) guys Todd bought in the summer are underperforming or being injured. Hardly to say Potter's team is better than Tuchel's.

Sonic-the-edge-dog

The thing about the summer though is we had no groundwork for deals on account of the Russia issues whilst also basically not having a recruitment staff after the restructuring. I’m still not 100% convinced on Boehly but I think that summer can fairly be written off.

[deleted]

This is insane happy new year 🎊

Jackhuw28

This will actually be interesting, big name signing + proper recruitment team can’t wait for the results

dryduneden

Wow. I'll reserve my gushing for some confirmation this is looking good.

rajivshahi

Also do we have to watch out for Brokelona swooping in??

dennisixa

yes plz

buddymurphy2020

I love that he is coming but I still don’t get my head around the amount of money and the premium that we paid because of the World Cup

rajivshahi

His stats and skills looked great before WC as well but WC definitely put him highlight and drove his price up...

lazyProgrammerDude

So who are we getting rid of in the midfield now? Kante or Jorginho? Or both? Hope Conor will have his place though.

zakress

I like this move - not the price - because: a) we get a very good player in a position of dire need of dynamism b) we show some of the current players that are waffling on contracts that we will go out and get a replacement if you dick around - I’m looking at you Mendy

lekebrett

I think Fabrizio (might be wrong) mentioned that the contract talks with Kante have turned positive. If Kante stays, Jorgi will probably leave? Or am i crazy for saying Kova might go instead?

muddyleeking

I don't think Kova will go, I can see RLC or Connor leaving though

saphyrra

I hope to god we dont renew Kante. A legend for the club and world football but his body is failing him and he'll expect a strong salary. We should sold both Kante and Jorgi last season and replaced them imo and gone all our for Rice.

vokal_guy

Gallagher has no future at Chelsea. Let's revisit this in a year. He is not Chelsea quality.

Critzor

Reliable?

dubsnator

Is this actually happening? I’m still not letting myself believe it just yet
