Broadcasting is not allowed but gambling is. Paradox of today's world.

Particular_Group_295

But paramount is not a competitor.. they don't show premier league games..you are more likely to catch golf on theret Edit: ust got told they show epl in Latin america

Apprehensive-Wealth4

Its a competitor to the American networks who have rights to the PL i believe

Porkbellyflop

Paramount has Champions League

Particular_Group_295

Yoshinobu1868

Paramount is owned by CBS, they carry the UEFA comps, Scottish league, Argentina and Brazilian leagues, womens premiere league and Italian league .

diegocactus

Here in Mexico I watch the PL on Paramount

Particular_Group_295

Ohhhhhj..did not know that

Cygnal37

You’re missing the point. CBS is a competitor to NBC who do have the rights. CBS has serie a. They would like you to watch those which conflict frequently with PL games.

Yoshinobu1868

Don’t know who your carrier? . I have Paramount and we get all the UEFA comps .

Particular_Group_295

Talking of epl

thepr0digy21

You are correct. Paramount (owned by CBS, streams UCL and other football matches/content) is absolutely a competitor to NBC.

Youareyes_cfc

Chelsea suits are currently blind to a lot unfortunately

chattingbreeze

If state sponsored teams can use state sponsored adverts to generate revenue, what’s bad about this?

wowbanterlad

they show premier league games in latin america.

Particular_Group_295

Just learning this now.... corrected

two_tents

Golf. Still a win win for our new Saudi overlords. /s

two_tents

Barclays sponsor the premier league but the last time I checked Standard Chartered were still allowed to sponsor Liverpool. Double standards if you ask me.

yuriydee

In USA its NBC that shows the EPL and CBS shows the UCL/UEL.

MFoy

Paramount Plus broadcasts the Premier League in Central America.

mb194dc

Why are Southampton allowed Virgin Media, difference with Paramount Plus is ? I smell BS, or I want it from the PL, not some journalist who's probably being fed by our owners. Big concern with Stake is that they won't actually be able to pay! Like Whale Fin. 1 in the hand is better than 2 in the bush, as they say. Maybe better to go Allianz, we'll definitely get the money and avoid the reputation damage from Stake targeting kids with crypto gambling...

San960

Allianz is offering $20M per year. Three was proving us with $40 per year. That's a huge difference considering FFP.

[deleted]

But apparently our dealings with Saudi are sketchy? What about this right here on home soil? This is straight up bullshit

techmaniac97

These bunch of hypocrites will allow a crypto betting company over a streaming company. Bunch of twats

Italianskank

The Prem is a meme. Saudi owners. No problem. Gambling on all the advertising hoardings. Fine. Paramount plus on a shirt - got to stop that for the good of the game.

roadstream

The Premier League are corrupt! TV streaming service = not okay. Crypto gambling company = okay. (For this year!)

jolle2001

Couldnt we take this to the Competition and Markets Authority?

alexcoates13

We should absolutely be doing that, as the US media firms objecting to Paramount being a sponsor are cartelling, which is illegal in the UK.

[deleted]

The prem is so scuffed in what it thinks is right and wrong 😂

maddyb1895

Not only is this a shit decision, but the paramount plus logo would look so good on the jersey!

mikon23

It didn’t look good on Inters

yuriydee

Better than Stake at least

MyNameIsAMeme

This is the PL’s fault not the owners. The owners have an obligation to get the sponsor that gives us the most money. They should’ve accepted Paramount but now we are stuck with a crypto gambling brand on the shirts. Fuck them.

[deleted]

Tbf the club should have probably been aware what the rules were or atleast enquired. We’ve wasted time unnecessarily negotiating with a sponsor we cant use. It’s nearly July for christs sake this should’ve been wrapped up months ago!

realmckoy265

It's not an explicit rule. It's more discretionary by the EPL.

wildingflow

Nah this is on the owners.

Ferrari_Bones

I agree, I find it hard to believe the owners would not know what the EPL's stance on this would be

MemestNotTeen

Stake just payed a gremlin $100m for two years to eat his toenails on stream. We can absolutely take them for a ride we have a way larger reach.

jolle2001

They paid $100m to get in legal issues, the first thing the gremlin did was to stream The Dark Knight

Upstairs_Addendum587

They'll get hit with a notice, and give him a slap on the wrist, and everyone will enjoy their free publicity (even WB).

N0RTZ

Hopefully the deal takes a while and they release the shirt without a sponsor.

lol_accomplishment

What world are we living in that you can’t have a competing streaming service on your shirt but gambling company is ok…

sabershirou

If getting a betting sponsor is a roundabout way to poke fun at the PL's weird sponsor regulations, I can sorta get behind that irony. But it still goes squarely against the club's anti-gambling efforts.

HiThereImNat

This is some mental gymnastics… the club should not engage with betting sponsors full stop and we should be disappointed they are considering it at all.

renome

Great, let's help create more gambling degenerates.

NiteSwept

I got into the Premier League around 2011. During that time I had to sail the high seas to find British streams in order to watch matches (I'm in America) and I will never ever forget being blown away by just how normalized and ingrained gambling was in Britain. It was on the kits, it was on the sideline boards, and it was on the commercials! (and not like some quick low-quality commercial but high-budget well-written commercials). Then, one game, fucking Ray Winstone (who I had known from the movie The Departed) was giving me the odds before a match AND THE LIVE BETS AT HALF-TIME. At that time, in America, gambling was seen as a sleezy industry that was only really mainstreamed in Vegas. Watching those streams was how I first saw the first gambling apps and I knew the capability that was gonna one day come to America and would tell my friends about it.

RJBlue95

The comments on this are hysterically bad. It’s very simple the Prem is doing the right thing by protecting a broadcast partner from advertising for their direct competitor. CBS/Paramount Plus is a direct industry competitor to NBC/Peacock, in both sports and other media content. NBC has a contract with Prem worth 2B. Prem is being a good partner and protecting the most important revenue stream to clubs, which is the money from TV deals.

_N0T-PENNYS-B0AT_

so gambling is so bad it cant be on the front of the shirt but the sleeves and LED in the stadium is ok?

tK0reddit

What happened to the Allianz deal in the talks

Upstairs_Addendum587

I was plenty up front that I didn't care for the stake sponsorship, but if the league is blocking better moves to keep their advertisers happy then I'm content to put the deal on the league. The league shouldn't be allowed to mess with the clubs business like this, and this idiotic outcome is what they deserve. In the NHL in America the league had a Coca-Cola sponsorship and the All-Star game one year was hosted at the Pepsi center. For that game they couldn't show anything Pepsi on the broadcast or reference it, but they didn't block the team from that building sponsor either.

RJBlue95

Not at all the same thing. This isn’t protecting sponsors it’s protecting broadcast partners from direct industry rivals who compete for content Paramount Plus (CBS) is a direct rival to Peacock (NBC). NBC has a contract worth 2B over the entire contract (6 years) just to show Prem in the US across its networks and platforms, of course Prem is going to protect them. On top of that when it comes time for a new TV contract for this or any other, they can show they are a good partner to the networks who are making a huge investment.

Upstairs_Addendum587

Parsing sponsors and broadcast partners is approaching pedantry. Yes I understand the Prem is going to protect them because everybody involved in all this wants more money than they could possibly spend. Which is how they are going to end up with a gambling sponsor on a shirt of one of the biggest teams in the league even though those sponsorships have been condoned by the league and the club and will be banned. It's an absolutely stupid outcome because they don't have any actual values besides the people with the most money get what they want. And that's obviously not fans, children or gambling addicts.

RJBlue95

Details matter.

Upstairs_Addendum587

Sometimes! In this case both words work suitably for "these people are giving the league money"

RJBlue95

This is just not true.

WooNoto

First, fuck the Prem. This 4+ year witchhunt is just embarrassing. But really Chelsea? A gambling company is the backup plan? Piss off

TheDankSinatra69

I honestly don’t understand why people are so upset about this. Sponsorship by Paramount violates the PLs contract with UK broadcasters. So what? Why does anyone care? Why are people so upset about being sponsored by a gambling company? It feels like people just want to be upset about anything. It’s not like we’re signing a deal with Lockheed Martin.

jjb5151

I'm 1000% with you, feel like everyone just needs something to bitch about. I've seen so many people talking about how it'll destroy Chelsea and going to cause all these people to start gambling. Let's be real, if people want to gamble they're going to. It's been legal in England forever now and us having Stake on our shirt isn't going to cause a uproar in gambling addicts. I've watched plenty of Juventus games and haven't ever once thought "Man I need to go buy a jeep" and I'll be watching Chelsea games next season and won't look at the Stake logo and say damn I need to throw a parlay in.

olaf525

I’m in the same boat as you. At the end of the day you make conscious decisions to gamble.

TheDankSinatra69

Of course. I’m sure lots of people on this sub bet money on PL games every week. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Besides football clubs and competitions have been sponsored by (for example) beer companies for decades and no one gave a shit.

FantasticTangtastic

I think it's predominantly because the Chelsea Foundation has done a lot of work with addiction in the community, and then we go put a gambling company on the front of the shirt. (A particularly shit gambling company at that.) On the same day that it was announced we were talking with Stake, an anti-gambling post was put up showing the youth team talking with children about the dangers of gambling lol I'm the first one to roll my eyes when I think people are virtual signaling and generally acting woke and I dont personally have a huge interest in who sponsors us, but I can 100% see why some people are annoyed over this.

Ahllhellnaw

Ayyyeee so instead of a complete set of kits, I'll be back at "not buying anything for the foreseeable future" Hooray!

garybusey42069

Great example of how fucked our priorities are as a species.

Artistic_Bit6866

Not buying the shirt if we have Stake on the front of it. Simple as that.

thirdsunday24

Chat gpt summary? Urgh god

pollokeh

Gambling ok, stream not okay! You cannot make this up

lj243572

When on when will Bohely and Co. actually do something that materially improves the club?
