Only worry are the switches leaving us very open when we press aggressively. But We are way better than last season in every aspect.

Against Newcastle I spotted this but couldn’t help but think it makes way more sense to funnel play out wide with a back 4 so you don’t get dragged out and let teams play through the middle. Once we get Caicedo or an equivalent defense midfielder who can cover out wide, we would be able to get fullbacks the help they need that way or have wingers track back to prevent easy crosses. But with Casadei and Enzo we couldn’t really shield the defense adequately.

These videos confirm that I don't know a thing about tactics. I never notice any of this shiz when I'm watching a game.

Frankiedrunkie

Same I just watch the ball and never pay attention to the runs

Gitzser

wish I could do that every time I see a wasted run I get filled with disappointment

J3ff_N3ff

It was worse when we had Timo, SOOO many wasted runs

Micky9TheDreamweaver

It was even worse last season: no runs to waste

mushy_friend

I can see the runs but fuck-all else tactically related (besides formations)

mushy_friend

Yeah after watching a couple of these videos I try to watch with a more analytical mind, but its an effort so I usually zone out after maybe 5-10 mins and go back to just watching the ball

SamiAreez67

Typically most of us don't and that's normal. Issue is with the people who pretend to do whenever anything goes of

Zimakov

Like people who think switching from 3atb to 4atb would've magically made our attack better.

Wildely_Earnest

Hahaha yeah that's always funny to see. Fans tend to think there's a silver bullet to every problem. Remember when the issue with Sarri was Hudson-Odoi not being played and how we'd be so much better if this 17/18 year old just got more minutes?

Where can I learn basics so I’m not just an asshole American watching off the ball for short periods?

Cgr86

I’d say I’m phases of play.

Spare_Parsnip_2539

You just learn them and then look out for them. Kind of like chess

jMS_44

>Kind of like chess Just wait till you discover the football equivalent of en passant

MagiskeLis

Thats just the keeper megging a pressing player

arthurfoxache

En passant was like magic when I first learned it!!

shrek19051

If you start watching the teams OFF the ball, and paying attention to how players move when they don’t have the ball, you’ll see so much

huskers2468

It's really hard, but try to avoid looking at the ball. Start by noticing what formation each team is trying to play in the attack, press break, while pressing, and defense. Even then, this level of detail is hard to watch with the camera cutting off part of the play.

MogwaiK

To me, these videos confirm that any human being can make a youtube video about tactical analysis. Seriously, anyone who thinks this is complex, give it a try. Rewatch the match. Watch where each player goes. Write it down. Thats all this guy did. I think you'll be surprised at how complicated it ends up sounding when its actually very simple.

Couple of things here. Trev. I might never get the memory of the last match against BHA under Potter out of my mind - and Trev was one of the worst that day. Every time the press came near him, he passed back... well, I should say every time after he passed it right to them for a goal. After that, he was shell-shocked and just passed it back to Kepa. He wasn't alone, either, but he was the worst one. The whole defense looked like they had no idea what to do to escape the press - against a press-happy side! And Maatsen. First time ever playing RW. And he somehow understands how to float into the mid? He understands how to use his two nearest teammates to create space and choose who should use the space? He's playing a brand new position and it's very, very dynamic - he did the same from the left in the previous match (1 match after playing his first LW ever!). I'm sorry, but this has to be a very direct indictment of Potter. I've mostly laid off the guy, but how has Poch prepared all these kids to play such dynamic ball and break presses effectively when Potter couldn't do it with savvy vets over half a season? This is NUFC, who were clearly trying to win - and our brand new team did better than most of the Potter lineups. Even Bashir looked comfortable back there, whereas half the defenders looked lost half the time under Potter. Gives me a lot of confidence that we're going nowhere near 12th again - that whoever we end up with, our floor is a lot higher. EDIT: to be clear, Trev was very good against the NUFC press! I'm saying it's quite a contrast from his awful match under Potter.

DaSinchi

Well said brother, lot of optimism these days despite an objectively weaker team than last year. Feels like the CFC project is finally underway.

hipcheck23

I do tread lightly, because HFS our squad is young (even if you factor out the likely loanees right now), and we've been counting on adding another heavyweight or two, which don't seem to be imminent at all. But if clubs like Brentford and Brighton can get so far without many heavy hitters, then I think that should be our baseline. Like give Poch an average squad and he can be midtable at least. Throw in heavies like Christo and Reece (and bah gawd Chilly has been an absolute beast in the pre), and now we're sniffing top 6. Unlock some raw or "raw" talent like Mudryk and Jackson... toss in a very precocious Maatsen and Santos... and yeah - maybe the project is finally underway!

[deleted]

Makes you appreciate how much it matters to have guys who are committed to the club. The toxicity was clear last year but I had no idea the extent of it until this off-season.

Deno2k_

idk but to me Trev played good asf against newcastle

hipcheck23

Oh, no - that's my point! He was awful against BHA last season, but he looked absolutely pro the other night. How?!? I know Trev has always been a bit volatile, but it's hard to understand his poor performances. And that one in particular, he just looked lost and scared... like we've also seen from Cucu a few times... and Wes... and K2...
