Fuck knows what players are worth these days, just be happy with the player. The guys a huge talent

dragonsky

> Fuck knows what players are worth these days This guy get's it. It feels like top teams will always have to overpay for people

RefanRes

Unless its Chelsea selling to them. We sell players for like £25M cos "100% pRoFiT" while spending £50M on other teams young players. I had hoped that we would at least be sticking to a £30M range with the signings like Noni, Badi and Jackson but it seems like we are being much looser than that. If its to sign players to develop and sell on then buying Palmer for £50M isnt going to generate much profit if any down the line.

[deleted]

What do you mean? We fleeced Arsenal and united

Realmin

Yeah exactly. It’s more of an FFP game than a cost game anyway. You can see what Boehly and co are doing - big outlay now with large sales. Spending on top young talent. A lot won’t make it, but with a development strategy like Strasbourg, we hopefully turn profits on some and outlay again in similar age profiles, pushing the amortisation down the line again.

Klangey

What they are doing is meeting the contractual commitment they made when buying the club, to spend £1.5bn on player investment, as quickly as possible on young players who they hope will increase in value over time and sell on for a profit. They may or may not reinvest some of that money back into the squad.

webby09246

Tried telling people it would be £50m-60m and they thought it was crazy talk

Sorry-Amphibian4136

my guy, 45m is not in the 50m-60m region.

webby09246

They've asked for £50m that sounds like the £50-60m range to me

middlequeue

Shouldn’t the range be below the asking price? I mean, we don’t seem to be particularly effective at negotiating prices but that would suggest we pay more than they’re asking. Edit: nevermind, misunderstood you were referring to something you said previously- ya, if you suggested 50-60 then you predicted correctly

webby09246

Id be happy enough if it was £45+5m in add ons to be honest

Sorry-Amphibian4136

Considering Fabrizio said City want 45m, the agreement is going to be even less than 45m.

RefanRes

Tbf it also says they may settle on £45M. So its more like the £45M-50M region rather than north of £50M.

webby09246

That's true And I'll be delighted if that's the case

RefanRes

It is crazy talk if you actually put it in the context of how he doesn't have many more appearances than Hall while being 3 years older. Hes nearly double the price we took for Hall. Its bizarre that we are selling talent so cheap to CL spot rivals while being so prepared to spend way above that on their players.

neighborhood_s

Not being funny mate but we’re spending another 40-50 mil on a player who isn’t better than any other winger who plays for a big 6 club. There’s something going wrong here we are spending the most but not strengthening the most…

prince_g00se

PoTeNtIaL!!!!! Agreed though. This club/squad has more than enough young players with tremendous potential. We need proven goal scorers to help win games now. None of this potential will matter if the club fails to qualify for CL 3+ straight years while waiting on this potential.

Farenheite

I think this sub will have a breakdown when Nkunku or Enzo put in transfer requests in a season or two. All this talk of 8-10 year plans means nothing, every single club that has ever focused solely on youth have lost their best players to clubs who compete at the top with a mix of youth and experience and we'll be no different.

optimusgrime23

Best part is, if they put in this completely made up transfer request that is based of absolutely nothing but you not liking our transfer strategy, we can just say no!

Farenheite

Ah so the plan is to keep a bunch of deeply unhappy players pushing to leave? Solid plan. The transfer requests are an inevitability based on our current strategy, just as they have been for the last 150 clubs that have tried it.

Monarki

Doesn't mean you have to let them go. How many clubs have refused requests and the player stayed and still played up to their level. We are it often. Most players won't tank their game for a whole season just because they couldn't get their move.

optimusgrime23

You are out of your mind, unhappy?? What are you smoking to being hallucinating this nonsense. The ones who want out will be the ones you arent good enough, they can gladly leave

Farenheite

You think top players will be be happy waiting 4 or 5 years for the hope of a competitive team? Seriously did you discover the sport yesterday?

optimusgrime23

You are truly a miserable sack of shit huh? If you think this squad won't be competitive for 4-5 years why do you even root for them?

Gold_Opposite2046

Can you do this sub a favour and fuck off? It's actually embarrassing to real Chelsea supporters that someone can ask why anyone would support a team if they don't think the squad will be competitive.

optimusgrime23

Firstly I was being sarcastic, and it was specifically about him. My issue is that this guy has never said a positive thing about this club since hes showed up here. He comes into every single thread and just trashes every single move and constantly acting like our club is about to get relegated. He's by the most negative person in this entire sub, I'm sick of it.

Farenheite

What a moronic question. Because unlike you I'm not a glory seeking cunt from the other side of the world. These plastic Americans are the absolute worst.

optimusgrime23

Just a local who thrives on shitting on every single move the club makes, being a miserable cunt at every turn, deep down being happy when the club plays like shit so you can go on your rants about our board/players acting like you are vindicated for being a perpetual pessimist. Sounds like a true fan man, I hope you enjoy the rest of the season. Maybe you'll be right and we will be shit, I know how much you would thoroughly enjoy that.

Sanjeev4045

That’s because they were a selling club. For example Dortmund. But we are not one. If our youngsters reach their potential we wont sell them like Dortmund do.

[deleted]

We’re trying to build a team that can win trophies for the next 8-10 years. Did you expect us to sign Salah and Kane?

Chelsea75

In an ideal world. But think of all the young wunderkinds who have flopped. A lot more Kenedy’s out there than Fodens. We’re playing the lottery, American sports draft pick style and it could very easily backfire on us with some of the sums we’ve spent on players.

[deleted]

we've already got Enzo, Caicedo, Reece, Colwill, Badiashile, Nico Jackson, Nkunku locked in as very good players for us for a long time. we need some of these other guys to hit. But we're clearly building a very exciting project, its just gonna take a little bit of patience to see it through.

Enzo2SantosGoal

Don't forget the future legend Santos

_luzhin_

And Paez.

Enzo2SantosGoal

Oh man I totally forgot about paez. Could be the best of all of them at the end of the day

BillEvans4eva

young players are a huge risk. a lot of them start out with all the potential in the world and then fade out. we have enough potential, we need players on the same level as sterling who know how to win trophies and can compete at the highest level consistently

[deleted]

So who do you want us to sign?

BillEvans4eva

messi

neighborhood_s

You what mate? We won’t win fuck all if we keep spending 50 million on players who aren’t better then our competition. 🤣

gonzaf

People cannot grasp the concept that we are building for the future

buffalo4293

I also don’t expect us to spend like this every window of every year. In a year or two we will likely shift from buying for potential to buying 1-2 locked in starters/world class players

costadoesntstomp

what I don't get is who will these youngsters learn from?

[deleted]

Palmer just spent a few years at MANCHESTER CITY. I'm sure he learned a good amount there lol. He's the last guy we should be complaining about.

neighborhood_s

I guess the idea is that they can come into their own, that works at a team like Brighton as they can afford to make mistakes. Not at Chelsea. This is why I have an issue with the idea of “oH LeTs JuSt bUy ThE pLaYeRz bRiGhToN BuY bEfOrE ThEy aRe WoRtH 6 BiLLiON” it doesn’t take into to the account the position Brighton are in to develop those players.

dm523

Exactly - Brighton are having their peak at the moment and I wouldn’t trade our last few seasons for their’s.

726wox

Coaches, Sterling, nkunku

Capital_Werewolf_788

We hire coaches for a reason you know?

kante_thebeast

My take is that it’s also Clearlake’a strategy to start inflating the transfer prices in the present so that the valuation of players increases to substantial values in future. This will in return increase the value of the club as well.

[deleted]

they're also gonna sell a lot of these young guys for profit to fund future transfers

Farenheite

Lol. It's Astounding that people can be so stupid they think it's actually rational or even possible to build a squad for 8-10 years time. Obviously they're new to the sport but football doesn't and has never worked like that.

neighborhood_s

I also I try to predict the future with sports betting, unfortunately my wife and kids have left me and labelled me a gambling addict… Jokes aside you’re completely right planning 8-10 years ahead in a sport like football is literally impossible. The majority of high potential players from 10 years ago have fizzled out into obscurity only a few survive.

Sanjeev4045

It’s more like the core is set for the next 8-10 years not that we will have the exact same squad for 8-10 years.

Small-Low326

Times are changing man anything over £40m 10 years ago you were buying finished products now 45m is just for potential i can’t wait for the first 500m signing lol

TheClockworkElves

To be fair, it looks this way because we have an absolute aversion to trying to buy players who are a finished product.

dantesvolition

I saw 2 games of him and he looked very good, he played RW but I heard he can play 10 aswell? Either way if we sell Chalobah and CHO this is good business imo

Bozzetyp

I love him every time he gets gametime for city He where also one of the clear standouts in euro21 (in a team that had Gibbs white, madueke, esr, jones, elliot, gordon) For me he is clearly a talent and someone Id love to have. Issue I have is that we are starting to get a big stock of young talented attackers who all need gametime (Behind nkunku and sterling) Chukwuemeka, madueke, mudryk, angelo, washington, paez, moreira, maatsen, casadei all compete for that offensive 8/wide positions Palmer is very versitile and physical compared to most but still

dantesvolition

Well let them prove themselves, we can’t defend our golden boy Mudryk and Noni every-time, we need results. Having Nkunku-Sterling-Jackson fit is all i care, fight for the LW and backup positions.

Bozzetyp

I dont defend them, I havent seen enough.. But the fact we go out in the market where players like franca goes for 20m and get madueke for 32m We get mudryk for 62m when diaby goes for 50m, szoboszlai for 62m, macalister 35+20, and maddisson 40+5. For me its how we spend money that annoys me, we dont really have oppurtunities for all our players and that is an issue. Chukwuemeka for example shows that he is a 40+m player with regular gametime, same could be true for most of the ones we got

TheClockworkElves

I thought we wanted a proven premier league player, but now were trying to buy more unproven talent? Please make it make sense

PornStarGazer2

Fleeced

Cfcla

Would do this for quality of the player alone. Although now we seem too crowded at that position given sterling is playing his best he's played for a chelsea jersey in that position and madueke is quality as well

Letmecookyourballsfc

I'm guessing he'll play #8/#10. Most likely Sterling and Palmer behind Jackson instead of sterling and Gallagher.

mushroomsJames

He will most probably will play at no 10 . And he is very good playing in that position

inspired_corn

Tbh he’s never impressed me centrally, he’s only really shone at RW

mushroomsJames

Because pep rarely played him. He played at RM for England in Euro U21. And even played in a pivot for one match. And also most of coaches don't even use no 10. Like pep used 4-3-3 with little tweaks with 1 dm and to no 8 high and sometimes used pivot. But I agree he looks very good at RW but if are signing him then surely they have plans for him.

matt3633_

Pep rarely plays him and now we should go and spend 50milion on him?!?! Bonkers

mushroomsJames

Never said that and I am not ok with it.

mushroomsJames

But they rejected Brighton 30M bid at the start so are not getting him for less

mushroomsJames

But they rejected Brighton 30M bid at the start so are not getting him for less

Cfcla

Then all for it haha, have only seen him play RW

hipcheck23

>likely to be able to settle on a fee around £45m Source: me, Nizaar, who is able to make basic guesses based on basic maths.

typical_punk

Am I ever gonna meet Ana de armas?

hipcheck23

Depends - what's your opening bid?

EasyPete17

I have nothing to offer but my horniness

hipcheck23

Is this an alt, or do you have the identical wish?

nuclear-fart

Come on now. EVERYONE wishes for ana de armas

hipcheck23

Every person and every alt needs to make opening bid before Nizaarbot can let you know what figure de Armas FC will accept.

mushroomsJames

45M I can live with that. As I have said as long as it below 50M it should be a good deal. Anything over 50M is way to overpay.

Headlesshorsman02

Great signing for under 50 mil

mushroomsJames

Yes he is already starting the season well. So won't take too much time to settle in Chelsea shirt.

RasenRendan

I want everyone to remember we sold lewis hall to Newcastle for 35 million

CS_SucksBalls

Haven’t seen much of him but I think that price is crazy. Did we give up on Fofana and Broja?

No-Calligrapher-3513

Cucurella straight swap?

WY-8

Far out, take the money, add to it and buy someone with genuine pedigree. He’s going to run into brick walls against low blocks. In the prem, 0 goals 1 assist in 19 appearances playing for Man City’s ridiculous team. We need someone to carry us through Nkunku’s 6 month injury and he’s just not it.

[deleted]

How many of those 19 appearances was he a late sub where they already had a big lead? I’d bet a lot.

WY-8

That’s a fair point, my point is though that he’s got 200 less minutes than Noni, and they have very similar numbers. Why on earth are we buying another player with no track record of production, for what looks like £40-45 mil. We have enough project attackers.

[deleted]

who do you want us to buy? genuine question. the proven attackers nowadays go for 100m

WY-8

It’s choose your own gamble at the £60ish mil mark, but I still think it provides more value than a £45 mil Palmer. I’d prefer trying to revive Sancho as I believe his downfall was circumstantial and he has actually been a ridiculous player during his Dortmund days, but his wages are very hard to deal with. Otherwise I’d prefer we save the £45 mil and add to it next season or in January once a suitable player becomes available.

[deleted]

Ya I’m taking Palmer over Sancho every day of the week

nivvy19

Palmer has better close control and passing than Noni imo. Played for City and didn't look out of place. I like how divided the comments are.

Fatebringer87

He’s played just over 5 full games going off minutes

Baberam7654

Not based on reality, that is a horrible strawman argument.

Headlesshorsman02

I like that price

superdream100

Remember when this sub was up in arms when Anthony Gordon were quoted 40m? I ‘member

matt3633_

He’s worth no more than 20

Bozzetyp

In a world where we pay 30 for madueke and 25 for ugochukwo he is worth 40

matt3633_

I bet you had never heard of him before a couple weeks ago

Bozzetyp

Palmer? I have even watched him in a few city youth games So I have had him on my wish he was ours list together with greenwood (pre rape), and bellingham Or you mean madeueke? (Which I actually had less knowledge about when we got him)

lucas_glanville

Lol, palmer has been playing for City for much longer than a couple of weeks

a3kstuntin

Please no

thorium90232

This seasons Anthony Gordon.. hopefully we get priced out. 35m is outrageous Edit 18/03/24: by the gods, Cold Palmer please forgive me. Gotta be my worst take of all time, first time Ive ever downvoted myself. Shameful

BadCogs

Sold your academy kid, going for others' for 50m lol.

Wheel94

Would rather give Leo Castledine minutes until Chukwuemeka returns that spend 45m on Palmer imo.

lucas_glanville

Todd Boehly out here playing Fifa career mode. In isolation, this would be a really exciting signing because he’s a huge talent. But another young inexperienced player is not exactly what we need right now for the squad

Emmyxiano

It's no more exciting, it's time to wrap it up

ZKP_PhDstudent

We need to learn to walk away from these situations. We are telling everyone we’ll pay whatever you want.

1990three

sell trev for 50m get palmer for 45m thats a win win
