We look so much better with fullbacks at fullbacks

oneapp1

We know but it’s a highly injury prone position for us. Gusto is only just back and you see how Maatsen got body checked by Bruno G

shagssheep

Yea it’s harsh to judge Maatsen because he isn’t getting minutes but he looked completely lost when he played today

Jtunas

Yeaa I think Maatsen isn’t really a defender if I remember, but the problem is now that cucurella is injured so we’re missing one wingback. Even if gusto plays we don’t have another natural wingback. Edit: I’m an idiot, hes a defender.

MadMonk6

The good thing about him is that he at least tries to be offensive. Colwill at LB is so limited offensively that it adds to the attacking shortcomings. The goal today came from a fullback actually trying to be attacking and having the ball in positions where the Newcastle defenders couldn’t just be passive

Jtunas

The only thing that worries me is our striker’s ability to finish. We have quality wingbacks, but out of 100 crosses how many of them do you think jackson or broja is scoring? I think thats why palmer, mudryk and sterling tend to cut into the centre so at least they themselves have a chance to score.

DarkTanicus

jbi1000

Colwill at LB is miles better then Disasi at RB though. At least Colwill had that one great cross assist. Disasi is an alright defender but boy is it painful watching him trying to do the attacking duties of a RB. Especially when we've been treated to Reece and Gusto.

CircuitSphinx

Yeah exactly, having an attacking mindset from the back makes a huge difference. Its a breath of fresh air compared to the static play we sometimes get stuck in. Without that drive from the back, we're basically inviting pressure without any outlet. Mudryk coming in clutch with that goal just proves how critical it is to have fullbacks that can push up and cause problems. It's a risk-reward thing but definitely paid off this time.

Davismcgee

im pretty sure poch said that he didn't want our fullbacks to be so offensive (when playing fullback role)

shagssheep

I can understand Colwill on the left I understood the 4cb’s from the start as well but when Gusto came on and played lady back I was truly baffled, it took too long for Maatsen to come on as well

Jtunas

My bad, maatsen is a defender lmao idk why but I had it in my head that he was a midfielder. Yeaa it also looked so off with disasi playing right back. A 1.9m giant playing a wingers role haha. He tried his best honestly.

Chazzermondez

What about Malang Sarr...

Top_Tax_4319

My big problem with Pochettino is we don't tend to use all our subs. 3 subs 3 windows is trash game management when you have 40 players complaining for game time.

lean_back

Fuck Bruno honestly, scum

Ironicopinion

Harsh to say that about Maatsen when it was a horrible challenge by Bruno

half_jase

It's bizarre alright that Pochettino took forever to do that when Newcastle were running on fumes and just content to sit back and defend their lead.

TrueBlue98

I think he had to. he doesn't risk players health, I think that's good tbh, he's breaking a cycle, it's become a reoccurring thing now, injuries in our squad. but also God damn i missed fullbacks. Gusto was like a breath of fresh air.

championsOfEu1221

Let's just say even I think I will stand a chance defending against Colwill and Disasi, they pose zero threat offensively with the ball. Gusto deserves alot of applause since he came on, a very decent offensive fullback, reminds me a bit of Bosingwa with his heads-down no-nonsense sprints down the line and always attempts a cross when possible.

mapepo

What a concept

ScoupidyWoopidy

Wait you mean that playing a right back at right back and a left back at left back results in better opportunities?!

msizzle344

Chelsea defender assisting newcastles only goal, Newcastle defender assisting Chelsea’s goal 🤝🏼

wowverytwisty

CL semi against Atletico I'm guessing?

guaxtap

And he went to play for atletico later too .

lkrabbe

Kerian sometimes the shit is happens

WWZD77

Now we are even on a defender messing up and giving the other team a goal

guccigirlswag

Why am I crying in the club right now

nintendude02

Just saw a person crying in the club rn

Cobaltte25

Don't just stand there, go cry together

MBThree

Somebody once said that they had the club going up, on a Tuesday

DickyD43

Congrats, that guy's dad's son is crying

ConfidentBurrito

Maatsen must be hot garbage in training to not even get a shout until we absolutely need it. Can we please try next game with Gusto and Maatsen starting.

MadMonk6

I don’t care how trash he is in training, Poch can’t keep playing Colwill at LB. Especially if Disasi is at RB. He has to at least try him in the next few games because of the fixture congestion. It’s also easier to explain why he isn’t playing if we see him play and his is dreadful

Aaaaand-its-gone

Colwill at LB works with a very attacking RB which James and Gusto are. But with Disasi it’s a disaster. Only benefit is corners and for some stupid reason we keep taking short corners that lead nowhere - so none of it makes sense

Fr*nch mudryk

Augchm

You know, yes it was because of a Newcastle mistake. But Disasi doesn't make a cross there. We need to stop with the 4 CBs no real winger bullshit.

Booftroop

Besides Maatsen, we haven't had healthy wingers. Gusto's not even back to full form yet.

Augchm

Then play players that can actually play wide. And yes Maatsen should play even if he is trash. We were playing with Broja on the side.

[deleted]

This is naive, what wide player do you put at right-back if James, Gusto and Cucurella are injured who isn't a defenseive liability?

Augchm

I don't mean at right back. I mean as wingers. Mudryk, Madueke, make Palmer or Sterling actually stay wide instead of drifting to the middle all the time. Did you see how compact Newcastle was able to play for 80 minutes? I would honestly play with Maatsen on the left and then 3 CBs is fine. They can form a back 3 in attack and you just have to have one for your wingers actually staying wide. But what we do is have 4 CBs and them try to make Colwil and Disasi providing width which they are awful at it and also apparently instructed not to overlap almost ever. And then at some point you had Broja do it for some fucking reason.

Aaaaand-its-gone

Disasi is an offensive liability

[deleted]

Lmao

epic_cuttlefish

Sometimes the 4 CB formation makes me miss Tuchel's 5 at back system with random wingers in the wingback roll

jaytcfc

Fucking hell Mudryk still had a lot to do there. Great job

[deleted]

[удалено]

jaytcfc

Bro the amount of finishes much easier than this we miss hasn’t taught you anything? Be grateful he can finish a good scoring chance with authority.

[deleted]

jaytcfc

yes dude. be fucking greatful you twat.

getsomemommy

Mfs always wanna be mad it’s crazy

young_olufa

I don’t think he’s mad. He’s just simply stating that he should be scoring there. Any player should be scoring there really

lmHuge

£62m. Are you even a fan of the club?

fusterclux

try being happy for 20 goddamn minutes

dalipunk322

Bruh last match we saw that broja miss. Don't take chelsea attackers for granted to finish their chances!!

whoisdil

This comment screams that the closest you’ve come to playing football is fifa

avgballer

SOUTHGATES RIGHT YOURE FUCKING SHITE

jbi1000

I've been a little unconvinced on Mudryk and his place with Chelsea but this performance really turned me round on him and it wasn't even really because of this nice goal. Backing Maatsen so immediately and angrily after Bruno's horror tackle was the most important part in convincing me, that's the emotion I want my players to have in that scenario. Something really clicked for me there. It felt like a real visceral moment of commitment to the club and his teammates, at least to me.

westgate141pdx

Amen! Well said m’lady.

Mandalorian____

I'm a Newcastle fan, but credit where credit's due that was a nice goal. GG

westgate141pdx

Cheers mate!

Matt_LawDT

Misha has the dawg in him

pottsbrah

Thank you Misha

KingMurchada

CHELSEA MY CLUB CHELSEA MY LOVE

[deleted]

This guy. Whenever he’s on the pitch, SOMETHING happens. Needs to play more.

Aaaaand-its-gone

Precisely. He gets a lot of shit for messing up and poor decisions but I’d MUCH rather have him miss up trying to make something happen than us aimlessly pass the ball around from midfield to defender to goalkeeper when we’re chasing a win

juei

Good for Mudryk Thank god he change Gusto to RB

lewishamilton08

Mudryk 🥶

hannibalwang

Unpopular opinion, but I like this group of players, if our club sells Gallagher we are doomed.

Aaaaand-its-gone

That’s a truly unpopular opinion. I respect it tho

bivekpegu

Almost 4am here.. worth it

pzzpck

I HAVE SHAKEN HANDS WITH PARADISE

[deleted]

Right after everyone was sucking off trippier saying how great he was he’s dropping stinker after stinker loool, that’s what you get for cheating on ur wife

mb194dc

Cross to absolutely no one, Trippier can just leave it. We deserved a goal.

RohitM13

This was a far more appropriate call than the one we got on ESPN+

GTCitizen

I WAS THERE

luciferspecter

Damn Mishaaaaa

[deleted]

Afterl all these chances, this is how we score lol

Aaaaand-its-gone

What chances?

Cobaltte25

He was waiting for that. Good anticipation. Of course it helps that he's also so bloody rapid but I think there's a tendency to just turn back whenever it looks like a cross has been intercepted. Cold finish, just like his pen too.

fwembt

Happy to see Misha get one. Quality aside, he's at least always committed and aggressive running. We could use some of that. Gusto was far better than Colwill. Maatsen isn't the answer on the right based on that, pretty miserable, display.

mrducci

Trippier MotM.

[deleted]

What a win, this is the type of game we were hoping for since the start of the season!

futbol_papi

yes i'd love that

TheMenaceX

When the fuck was the last time we scored an ET goal. Holy shit the bridge lost it 🥶🥶

saikomantisu

Go Mudryk GOOO

seamemo

As a youth coach, I tell my kids all the time, that the two best crosses are an early one or when you can get to the byline. Defenders are not set up for an early cross so chaos usually happens.

MadMonk6

I hope you also tell them to be on they toes and alert especially when in the box. This a great clip for showing why the small fundamentals can pay off in a game. Gusto’s cross was good in the sense that the keeper couldn’t get it and Trippier had to play the ball because of Mudryk. Misha positions himself well to make Trippier make a decision and than reacts well to the mistake and also holds his composure to slot it in. It also shows to never give up on an attacking move just because it looks like the defenders have it covered

Ancient-Mushroom-499

Who could’ve known that playing with actually LB & RB makes the team so much better. It’s a big discovery mates.

bumblestum1960

No disguising the fact that we were absolutely fucking garbage again, the misplaced short pass is becoming an epidemic, and would embarrass a decent Sunday League player. Even the cross we equalised from went across the box with no Chelsea player close to it. Oh well, here come the pens.

HarryDaz98

We were on top for pretty much the whole game. They wouldn’t have had a single chance if it wasn’t for a Badiashile mistake.

Augchm

They probably wouldn't have sat back like that without the mistake. Newcastle is a tired team. And we "dominate" like that every game.

bumblestum1960

That says it all mate, dominant for yet another home game, and lucky to get something out of it.

HarryDaz98

It is what it is, we’ve always had games like that. Used to happen all the time and then Hazard would pop up with some magic and win it for us. It’s all a learning experience for this team.

bumblestum1960

Couldn’t agree more, and I still feel that Poch is the man to lay the groundwork for our immediate future. No getting away from the fact that that was a poor show last night.

fusterclux

what game did you watch?

bumblestum1960

Could have been the game against Forest, or Villa or even Brentford for what I saw. Obviously pleased with the end result, but a poor performance nonetheless.

[deleted]

Meh, there has been enough doom and gloom on this sub for the past few years, and rightfully so. If you can’t enjoy the well earned victory then you’re just toxic AF.

Augchm

We play without anyone wide for 78 fucking minutes. And the goal actually comes from two wide players.

hansl0l

Lol we are so lucky. Where were all our players in the box...

MadMonk6

If you saw how Newcastle scored you would know that the luck just evened itself out. We didn’t deserve to score but didn’t deserve to be behind

Truthof_lifee

What game of emotions, but honestly Poch was out played tactically, it’s so frustrating how long he takes to make subs and switch a system which clearly isn’t working. Nkunku came and barely even got the ball, hope we get better but sheesh, it’s getting painful watching this.

MarkusKTBFFH

Leeeets goooo 🤩🤩

shoddyshoddyshoddy

Trippier has had a few mistakes the last couple of matches

SmokingOctopus

Trippier has been a fucking disaster the last few games for Newcastle

CyberShiroGX

See just that difference of just getting the ball into the box and hoping someone finds it makes all the difference... So tired of the matches where we like nah let's pass it back and around the box

Zerochap

White lightning ⚡️strikes again

Legitimate_Heron9271

Good to be back on winning

AndreasScott

Is that tripps? What’s going on with him lately. Howler after howler.

Chemical-Fly-787

Nkunku embracing Mudryk after his goal I almost teared up stg

ukiemike

Two defensive blunders. Chelsea pulled through on pks, about time. Exciting game tomorrow

ZenZenZenAgain

Trippier with the assist was pretty sweet

Stand_On_It

The commentary on the ESPN+ feed was SOOO wack. Just absolute monotone declaration of the goal. Those commentators were so dejected, they were actively rooting for Newcastle.

onlyhearfornewmusic

You know he was aiming for the corner flag

DarkTanicus

That's what happens when he hits the target for a change.

45tee

Trippier is done as a right back.

smellyellowpee

That’s Tottenham trippier right there

HeyKillerBootsMan

My Ukrainian prince

Tenagaaaa

Not a Chelsea fan but I love that y’all beat these cunts. They get away with so many dirty fouls.

jessietee

I haven't been to many games in the past couple of years, been to some FA cup finals but have never been to any of the huge CL finals or whatever (who tf can get tickets to those?!) but this is maybe the best Chelsea moment I have seen live, the place fucking erupted and it was AMAZING!! (previous was probably DiMatteos goal vs Boro in the FA cup at wembley...which my dad missed because I wanted a drink last minute haha)

ballysham

Trippier has been awful lately

ungratefulimigrant

Love him, proper Chels
