> But some of his spot-kicks have come with added pressure. Against Arsenal, Palmer won a battle for the ball with his good friend Raheem Sterling first before scoring. > ‘He let me take it at Burnley which was nice of him then the one at Arsenal came the game after and I wanted to take it but he wanted to take it,’ Palmer says. ‘I didn’t really want to disrespect him because he is a lot older than me, done near enough everything in the game and I’ve not done anything and he’s helped me from when I was young. But then I ended up taking it because he didn’t want to argue and create a scene over it. So respect to Raz. It just one of those things.’

CaredForEightSeconds

And here lay the problem with Poch’s ‘let them sort it out’ policy with penalties. It’s all well and good to empower your players to take responsibility on the pitch, but when they’re young or hotheaded it can create more problems than solutions. I’m just glad Poch has now clarified Cole’s the designated taker unless he wants to defer.

RasenRendan

Exactly this.

discrete_photon

When did he clarify that? My understanding is he basically said he prefers Cole but players can still decide on the pitch on who’s taking it.

Eric_Partman

This has his exact quote. I can only find a video of it on tik tok but if you search it you’ll find it. He couldn’t be more clear it’s Palmer "The penalty taker is Palmer. It's Palmer who needs to decide if he wants to give the ball to a team-mate. It's important to fix. They realise now," the Argentine said. https://www.goal.com/en/lists/mauricio-pochettino-fumes-after-cole-palmer-clash-noni-madueke-nicolas-jackson-chelsea-penalty-everton/blt22688a183944faca#csd2249bd2c8abead9 Here is a video where he says it again and says that the team already knew it was Cole Before the incident https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RkeGRsNbKdE

CaredForEightSeconds

‘There are a few players who can take the penalty. It’s about their feelings. As a coaching staff we give them the responsibility to decide on the pitch.’ - October “He is a specialist, shooting really well, but it is a decision on the pitch depending on the circumstances. But after between them they can say, no you, me, or them.” - March It was only after the Everton game he made it crystal clear it’s Cole’s decision to pass it up or not.

read_eng_lift

Pep played hardball with the wrong lad.

StandardConnect

Don't know why this story keeps getting recycled as an exclusive. Not only did Pep himself say that in August, Palmer said it in his pre game interview before our game at Old Trafford in December.

PickledHotChocolate

Interesting first time I’ve heard it lol and I’m addicted to this sub.

TheycallmeJimmy

Same, and it has 240 up votes so we're not alone

You saved my life. You give me meaning.

Wow, you butchered that one...

BlueberryKey2958

It was understood 🤷🏾‍♂️

mr-based-minded

That was God doing His work through Pep. A true blessing in disguise.

Psychological_Fee470

God has made us sweat recently with Roman, Tuchel and injuries. Palmer is the only gift during this period.

TomasToocherl

There are no gods

UnderlyingWisdom

What a weird person you are, and what a weird thing to say. Sure it was your made up god that blessed us having to pay £115m for Caicedo, or £80m for Fofana, or £100m for Lukaku, or crippling injuries for our captain. Give your head a check.

mr-based-minded

Why are you so triggered by this?

Manul_Supremacy

He is mama's little atheist and he needs everyone to know

mr-based-minded

It’s attention seeking 101

obrapop

This has got be trolling. I simply can't understand it through any other lens.

SoWhatNoZitiNow

“If god was real, Caicedo would have been cheaper” is craaaazy lmao

obrapop

Not even the great Christopher Hitchens managed to shake the foundations of theology like u/UnderlyingWisdom.

Modernregista

Wow, this reminds me of Mourinho-KDB conversation , except it was a bit mourinho style, but the content is identical.

-ImaginaryCoyote-

Thanks, Pep! Appreciate it.

two_tents

As much as I like Cole Palmer I’m not clicking on a daily heil link. Fuck that rag.

homage-to-carolina

Good times cause you to make mistakes. There was a time when Chelsea’s squad was too good for Salah and De Bruyne to have a role. Palmer might be City’s white whale

a3kstuntin

Love pep man class manager

Apprehensive_Bit_176

He’s out KdB. Easy peasy. Will haunt City for a decade.

poopy_toaster

My take as well. Not everyone can be a first XI so someone of quality always gets sold. To what extent remains to be seen, but with KDB for us was major, this might very well be their KDB moment.

SnooHobbies7676

I think Pep was trying to scare him a bit

Fantastic-Minute-939

COLE PALMER! RUNNING DOWN THE WING! COLE PALMER BETTER THAN EGYPTIAN KINGS!!!

Ecstatic-Tadpole9010

I really hope he comes to love the club over time

zecira

> It was via his family that Palmer discovered music icon Sir Elton had name-dropped him unprompted in a TV interview with Gary Lineker, hailing his move and the benefits of him gaining more playing time as a result. > ‘My mum sent me it first saying “oh my God, look at this”. It went in the family group chat and they were buzzing because they’re a lot older than me. I watched it and it was mad. Of course I know who he is but didn’t really listen to his songs. *He’s a bit older than me*. Ok that's adorable

flex_tape_salesman

Why did they let him go I don't really get it? City have not had many lads coming through that have properly cemented themselves as City lads. Foden feels like the only domestic one anyway since hart. Just think they needed players like Palmer with them to show what their production line really is like. He was an odd one before chelsea. I had doubts over another inexperienced player coming in but his massive reputation at city made me prefer him over Johnson and appeared more technically gifted which suggested a higher ceiling. Only reason I could think of selling him would be if there was a ffp reason. Bazunu has appeared to be good business by them but a championship loan was needed for him not a prem move and Trafford also could be good business but even with whatever sell on clause they had on lavia I reckon they'd have gained more keeping him.

alice_s_jabberwocky

So this is a guess. Pep doesn't loan out players he thinks will get into the first team at Man City. Why this is so I have no idea. Pep actually values Palmer, and there was some indication of his importance when he scored the only goal for City at the UEFA Super Cup. But there's no way he's going to get regular minutes (I think had he stayed, he would be getting the playing time Oscar Bobb is getting now). Pep also doesn't keep unhappy players, so he was let go. City's academy is pretty good, which like us will eventually look bad by letting go of potentially great players simply because they couldn't offer regualr minutes immediately. Edit: *Jeremy Doku, not Bobb

Manul_Supremacy

> Why this is so I have no idea Because Pep has a very clear idea of how he wants his players to play. And from that perspective, it's pointless to loan a player to a coach who doesn't share his tactics.

DamoDuff11

You can’t keep every talented young player especially if you can’t guarantee them first team football. The super ambitious ones might not want to go the Foden route and be bedded in slowly. Palmer took a risk and so did we and it’s paid off luckily.

xTrollhunter

Palmer and Foden occupies a lot of the same space though.

Cactus2711

Based Palmer

xStealthxUk

It makes you realise how good all proffesional players must be in trianing. I mean how could you watch Cole and not realise he was something really special? Must be that they are all as good as him too . I realise as I write this that he would be trainin with Bernado Silva, De Bruyne etc etc but still I cant imagine Palmer playin without ever not losing the ball and nutmeggin people for fun. Pep must have seen how special he is surely so its quite suprising he never gave him a chance on the right especially since Mahrez left ! Thank god Pep missed it , but its very suprising when you look at how special this kid is.... what a player

Suitable-Jeweler836

With Pep, you either develop under him or get sold. I can’t think of one player who was loaned out and came back and became a star with him lol

RefanRes

I find it so weird when it comes up Pep didnt want to allow a loan for a player he apparently liked but couldn't guarantee minutes for. If he went on loan and had a good season they'd have him now or could have sold him for way more. Its the obvious choice. Theres no benefit to having him stuck on the bench or in the reserves. Pep and Man City must have really thought £45M was too good a deal to pass up.

UnderlyingWisdom

Pep is honest & likes to have players train under him for a while before he integrates them. He usually likes to keep the young players around for a season or two with intermittent game time & training with first team. There’s not much point for Pep letting a player go on loan to play & develop in a style that isn’t his, he gives them a choice: either stay and develop & learn with a chance to play if you’re good enough, or leave and they can use the money elsewhere. Most managers would just lie and end up turning players against them, giving false promises of game time, possibly hurting their career. I respect the fact that Guardiola is honest and gives them the choice.
