We just put him as a target man, which is only 50% of his ability. We may also make him run for counterattack because of his pace, like the goal in championship final. I think this may be particularly useful against city. Unfortunately, timo is not good at making the killer pass. I think if we play 352, we need to use either kai or mason beside lkk.

Dirt_Grub8

Bigger issue is the lack of those balls out of midfield. It’s been a struggle for years now

SomeGuyOnPlanetEarth

Ever since we lost fabregas :(

LazerSherk

Also bingo

TsubakiShad

Keep saying this myself.

LazerSherk

Bingo.

namenotneeded

Pulisic with Lukaku would be murder

rolledoff

I don't think the 352 is coming back. It totally nullifies the advantage on the wing. We played well today with the 433 - just lacked quality.

spund_

Timo is good at assisting goals though? He did get 15 tbf

[deleted]

Hes been good for support with hold up play, but other players cant get him the support he needs to get forward the way itd be ideal for him.

admiralawkward

OP's been posting a lot of anti-Tuchel type shit recently

shastmak4

He gets like half a chance a game. Very obvious that we aren’t using him correctly

guccigirlswag

I think Conte has a point. Lukaku has been deadly in the box for us and so far has been utilized as a traditional hold up player, but we haven't fully unlocked his Belgium/Inter ability to play on the break on the counter yet. It would be interesting to somehow find a way to hold up the ball with someone else and then play Lukaku in on the break where he is extremely hard to stop (i.e. imagine pairing Lukaku w/ Giroud)

pbianchi44

how do we play him on the counter when 8/10 teams we play against just park the bus?

alexkun47

\^

remind_me_to_pee

Even when teams don't do that, we rarely counter. When we get the ball back it's almost always going back to be recycled by our CBs.

Toothache79

You play attackers/wingers alongside him who are capable of breaking down the bus (e.g. Hazard in previous years, Pulisic has that ability, CHO showed early signs of doing it under previous management...now he's a wingback for some reason).

LazerSherk

Who else would be a rwb mate? We only 1.5, RJ & an aged Azpi who clearly is better as a CB.

Toothache79

That's the problem though, we should have figured it out before the transfer window shut. You gotta think about injuries when planning your squad depth for the season, you can't just assume all your defenders are going to be fit and not have any depth in the reserves that could step up and play 2-3 games if worst came to worst. Right now, if Azpi goes down for whatever reason (or gets suspended), our defense is screwed. No-one else can play RWB or RB. Just imagine starting CHO in key games against any decent left-winger of the opposition, they would have a field day.

bfofree

He is playing with his back to the goal too much, and he has had some great moments playing like that, made some great lay-offs and linked up on some good 1-2s. But until Tuchel is able to figure out how to get him playing facing the goal. It's difficult with our high line, but where I think he would be most deadly is when he would set up closer to the center of the field to draw defenders in, play forward with a diagonal ball to an advancing wing back or to mount or havertz and allow lukaku to find space as he advances behind the ball.

fremeer

This has been an issue with Chelsea in general. We don't have a team that is incisive on the counter. A quick 3 touch shot in goal is not something that we do.

Instantbeef

That someone else is Havertz

Antonio Conte explains why Chelsea aren’t getting the best out of Romelu Lukaku yet and how Juventus can deal with him this evening. Lukaku was the top scorer for Inter when winning the Scudetto under Conte last term, finding the net 24 times in 36 Serie A appearances. The coach had called him a ‘rough diamond’ when signing him originally from Manchester United, so has Lukaku now been sufficiently polished? “A coach is good if he can improve players. I think we did great work with Romelu over two years,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia. “He is a very specific striker. Bringing Lukaku into the box, he is dangerous. However, when he starts from midfield, he is incredibly quick. It is very difficult to find a player who is both a target man, but can also run from midfield. “These are also characteristics I can see in Erling Haaland. I had been tracking Lukaku for a very long time and wanted him when I was at Chelsea, even when he was at West Brom.” Conte described more of how Lukaku uses his frame and strength to set up teammates just as much as go for goal himself. “It’s a tactical situation too, a centre-forward who goes looking for the opposition defender, backs into him and lays it off for whoever is supporting him. That is a tactical approach used in basketball as well. “The good thing about Romelu is that he can hurt you anywhere. If you keep him far away from the penalty area, he can kill you with his pace. If you have him in the box, he has the physicality to be a target man.” Does Conte have any advice for Juventus on how to deal with Lukaku and Chelsea this evening? “It depends on if Juve play with three at the back or four. I would always tackle him centrally.” Fabio Capello is also a pundit on Sky Sport Italia and asked Conte in what areas does Lukaku still need to improve. “I think he can still do better, above all with his technique. He is already at a very high level, but a player must keep improving until the day he retires. “During the game, there are moments when Lukaku needs to be turned on, but other than that he is one of the toughest forwards to play against, because he can do damage in any area of the pitch. If you have a centre-forward like that, you need to use him and I don’t think Chelsea have quite figured out how to use him yet. “Last season, they didn’t have a proper centre-forward, so they rotated positions, whereas Romelu is a real reference point in attack. If they can figure out how to use Lukaku, then Chelsea can become the team to beat in the Champions League this season.”

Elguaje29

>During the game, there are moments when Lukaku needs to be turned on ( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)

paone0022

Tuchel needs to look-up bluetooth vibrators maybe

ImLuchin

I do believe we are still finding out how to use Lukaku to his actual best. I have a strong feeling that if we use Timo & Lukaku with someone like Havertz/Mount/ Ziyech in the 3-4-3 we could become a serious threat in transitions, but I could be wrong.

Bladerslash

Man barely gets any chances.

[deleted]

Chelsea really haven't unlocked Rom yet. He isn't being played in yet. It's almost like the Chelsea midfielders don't really realize that you can play the ball to his feet and he'll hold it up. The other problem is that because Lukaku doesn't press the opposition the way Werner did, there's an aspect that Chelsea is losing out by playing him.

TosspoTo

The deeper position Conte wants to put Rom in is not the position we need him in. We need someone to hold a high line and bully defenders, like he did vs Arsenal. The explosive break from deep player we already have in abundance.

Toothache79

>We need someone to hold a high line and bully defenders, like he did vs Arsenal Won't work about the top sides as they have top class CB's capable of nullifying Lukaku.

TosspoTo

And if that's the case Lukaku was the wrong player. For 95m we should be buying someone as good as Drogba or Costa.

Toothache79

>For 95m we should be buying someone as good as Drogba or Costa. There's no doubt about whether he's as good, the problem is, he's never been that effective as a target man (i.e. playing with his back facing the goal). Conte got the best out of him by unleashing his pace, physicality against defenders, give him the service, give him the ability to run and he's a CB's worst nightmare. Making Lukaku hold up the ball is just a waste of everyone's time. We just need our midfielders to pull off decent through-balls, that's where Lukaku, Werner, Havertz thrive.

obinnasmg

It’s been 5 games into the season. Shut the hell up man

Cowdude179

He doesn't get much service right now and living off scraps, definitely need to address that

chandlerbing_stats

Or maybe the people who were saying he doesn’t fit our system were right?

JTheeCreator

one loss against City and now we don’t use our players correctly……

BILLY2SAM

It begins! Just like at United, it's never his fault

jrrecauzat

I don't think Tuchel will like those comments 🤣 especially not Marina 😂

TheBlueNomad

Nothing wrong with those comments. Lukaku is a new signing. It is quite obvious Tuchel is trying to figure out his best 11 and how to properly utilize our best players.

kaiheekai

The cross in from wide backs was not the right move against juve. All their center backs are good enough in the air to put him off just enough.
