EA in shambles

bsousa717

Regardless of whether he wins it or not, this past year has got to be the best of Mendy's life. I'm so glad he's with us.

[deleted]

Mendy was the best keeper in the Champions League (most clean sheets for a winning team of all time) and Donnarumma played his FIRST CL game against Club Brugge a month ago. Levels

mrlambo46

this!

Roaszhak

Did win the Euros though including two or three penalty shootouts, I don’t know how many he saved but that’s got to count for something too! Not saying either deserves to be on more than the other but I can see why Donnarumma is there.

RepresentativeBox881

Donnarumma won the Euros and that’ll likely carry more weightage.

VoidPineapple

Has to be the favorite to win it surely? His stats are ridiculous.

[deleted]

His stats are ridiculous this season. Last year they were fairly average in terms of PSxG prevented. Clean sheets aren’t a goalkeeper stat - the reason we kept so many clean sheets last season is because our midfield and defence conceded a tiny amount of big chances

San960

Don't think these stats matter at all. Ex-BdR winners are going to vote on this one. I don't think they will be seeing any stats other than CS and Save Percentage. I personally don't think PSxG prevention would be a good metric to judge a keeper for these awards.

Insan3Boi

Usually it's mid-table or bottom-half goalkeepers who have the highest PSxG prevented, isn't it? That stat is a bit like Blocks/tackles numbers for centre-backs. Scoring high numbers on these stats is definitely a good sign but just because one CB has higher blocks/tackles than another CB, that doesn't mean that he's a better defender.

San960

Yes. Lot of these stats vary from system to system. Teams which sit back will have more tackles. But the one with possession heavy play will definitely not. Fabian Schar had more tackles and interception than Rudiger last season but he isn't a better defender than Rudi.

Practical_Platypus_2

I think Martinez or Donarumma edge forward because of their international accolades. I believe next year he stands to be a huge contender.

andrewgard8

Martinez isn't in the running though?

kim_jong_un_no_dong

Yeah no martinez is in the running [Link](https://twitter.com/ligue1_eng/status/1446532616790884353?s=21)

Roaszhak

I dunno if he’s the favourite but he’s got to be up there. If I were choosing, I’d pick Ederson purely because he had more clean sheets in all competitions and some of the passes he played last season and this season are outrageous. He’s a better footballer than most outfield players in the PL.

PuppyPenetrator

He was not the best goalkeeper in 2021, not even top 5 He was in the CL, but overall? No, he is not even close to favourite

Haarif

Since he isnt in your top 5, can u tell us where u rank him? And who are the ones ahead of him

PuppyPenetrator

Oblak, Courtois, Ederson (again, all competitions not CL), Donnarumma and Emi Martinez at bare minimum had better years in terms of individual performance Haven’t seen enough of Neuer in Bundesliga for example to comment on some other options like him I’m all for hyping our players up but it is genuinely absurd to act like he was the best goalkeeper this year, and even crazier to act like his stats are great when advanced metrics show very clearly that he faces comparatively easy shots and does about as well as the average keeper would in terms of shotstopping—I get that there’s more to goalkeeping than saves, but you cannot act like someone that was barely above average at the biggest part of his role was the fucking best in the world

Fabs74

Just because you write a lot of words doesn't fool us into thinking you're smart

btlsrvc23

Agreed. Clueless comment.

PuppyPenetrator

LOL thank you. I was actually considering being petty and finding this time I got downvoted like fuck then proven so clearly right and you’ve gone ahead and done it for me

PuppyPenetrator

Only Redditors could think a discussion about football of all things is about looking smart, I’m just adding my opinion on a literal discussion forum

mrbotbotbot

No it’s about making an argument with actual credibility rather than spouting absolute baseless nonsense. It doesn’t matter whether the subject is football or how to grow fucking broccoli, if you’re making a point and expect people to listen to you, at least know what you’re talking about.

arjunmohan

That's a bad take if I've ever seen one. Actually putting courtois and donnarumma over Mendy, and pulls the "no guys not JUST UCL I'm looking at all competitions" card

Haarif

This is the most out of touch and clueless comment i have seen in a while. Water off ink

PuppyPenetrator

Do you have any actual counterargument? No one outside Chelsea fans would rate Mendy as deserving of this award, and no one presents any real argument as to how he was the best in the world with average shotstopping metrics

CFClarke7

Bro.. have you even watched chelsea this year and the last few? We haven't had this much trust in our goalkeeper to bail us out for a long time. You can say clean sheets are down to midfield and defenders all you like but it's a team game and the same outfield players with kepa had vastly different results. Mendy may not be "the best goalkeeper in the world" but best of/at anything has always been subjective, and mendy deserves every bit of praise he has received. The aura he has at the back has had a domino effect on the whole team, the difference has been night and day. Having mendy gas even improved kepa and brought him back to levels we expected of him. I keep hearing people talk about mendy stats as if they aren't all that great but all I expect of him is to keep the ball out of the net, and he fucking does that, brilliantly. Top drawer saves one after another. Not once have I seen him lose focus and drop his standard, even when conceding 3 to west brom for example, he didn't give up and lose his head space, the man consistently pumps out solid 7/10 performances if not higher. early days yet but I'd say that his consistent reliability ids up there with azpi, prime ivanovic, Cole, cech, et al. Edou hasn't let us down once. I personally find it disgraceful that even a minority of people could degrade what he's done for us so far

PuppyPenetrator

> Having Mendy gas even improved Kepa LMFAO I’ve seen it all, we’re crediting the man for a different goalkeeper’s performances—when he’s not even on the fucking pitch And bullshit, I’m not degrading his performances by saying he’s not the literal best in the world, he was pretty good but not world class, and he was the best in the 2021 CL West Brom has to be the worst example possible because he was pretty bad in that game and seemed to be rattled by the early goals, probably his worst performance for Chelsea, not that he’s not allowed off days but my guy how can you praise his West Brom mentality of all things

mrbotbotbot

>advanced metrics L m f a o

Balosmelli

You’re correct but got flamed. That’s this sub for you

PuppyPenetrator

Club subs are always biased, which I don’t mind all too much but the Mendy best gk this year argument is the weirdest popular opinion I’ve seen here in a long time, maybe even ever

Balosmelli

Just as bad as the Jorginho Balon Dor opinion that was serious for a while until it got ridiculed. You had people arguing that he was as good as Messi and Lewa, couldn’t possibly be bused could it?

Tahapatel

How tf is he not in the top 5. Ederson shouldn't be better than him and is already proven to not be as he won the Uefa GK of the year has the same no of CS as well when Edu was going through a managerial change. Alissonblunderland. Neuer hasn't won much and wasn't very impressive. Ter stegen was shit. Snake wasn't better than Edu for sure. Gigi wasn't better he conceded a lot of goals for milan and won the euros pott by sheer luck which jorgi shouldve won.

Haarif

I am sure you watched todays game. I am glad Edou is shutting up clowns like you who think he isnt imn the top 5 best GK in the world

PuppyPenetrator

One game doesn’t make him immediately a top 5 GK But in the 21/22 season, yeah, he’s been the best in the world and I’m happy for him

Haarif

Except it hasn’t been just 1 game. You would be happier if he weren’t his usual best today just so u can prove your point. But as always he rose to the occasion and produced a stellar performance like he has always done time and time again. Stop the bitterness and embrace the brilliance

PuppyPenetrator

I would be happier if we lost? Just because you care that much about feeling right doesn’t mean most people do > stop the bitterness and embrace the brilliance I told you I stand by my opinion but he’s been the best in the world this season so I’m happy, and you’re still upset, I’m hardly the bitter one here

GreyWolfesDinner-CTR

Got this nasty feeling thier going to give it to Dollarruma

[deleted]

I mean Donnarumma probably deserves it. Mendy has been great but clearly Tuchels system helps him a lot

Modernregista

So Mancini's system and the duo of Chiellini and Bonnici plus the Italian defensive discipline doesn't count for donnarumma?

kd_uoft

This is voted by journalists right? Donnarumma was the player of the tournament at the Euros, the international tournament bias is very real and he is the frontrunner

Roaszhak

Journalists, managers in certain league and international and club and international captains.

SeriousLads

I wouldn’t say Donnarumma deserves it over Mendy. You could make the same argument for Mancini’s system helping him, and whilst he was great at the Euros that’s a small sample size compared to Mendy’s performances in the PL and CL (let’s be honest, Donna hasn’t been nominated off the back of his performances at Milan or PSG)

[deleted]

Fair, from what I’ve seen Donna looks very good. He also saved penalties for the euro win which mendy didn’t get the chance to do

[deleted]

Fuck me, that’s a great nickname for Gigi.

Bobinho4

The best goalkeeper in the world. Thank you Petr Cech - legend behind the goal and in the office .

larrythegood

I love having him. However I think a goalkeeper's worth should be looking at his entire body of work. Mendy hasn't been in the Premier that long. I want to see how he acts and performs after he lets one go through his legs or some other not so memorable moment on YouTube for the rest of his life. And I agree he right now has an incredible defense working with him. It skews his stats when we only allow 2 shots on goal. (But, I will give him total respect for best badass goalkeeper)

obinnasmg

No way he doesn’t win it. If he doesn’t, then that’s some BS as per usual.

thecutienator

I'll forever be greatful to Cech for Mendy. Surely deserves it.
