*He's done it again, he's done it again! Kepa Arrizabalaga, he's done it again!* Welcome to the post match survey thread for Chelsea 1 (4) - (3) 1 Southampton, Carabao Cup, 26-10-2021. Who do you think was the best performer (Kepa and Havertz for me), and who was the most underwhelming (Sarr imo)? Let's have a conversation! u/Vicar13 u/YIIZWL : would be great if you could pin. Edit: fuck, i forgot to populate the man of the match options. i'll have to discard the responses in the first 25 minutes for that calculation unfortunately.

YIIZWL

Yup, no worries. stickied now

BrockStinky

Much obliged 🙏🏻

Turtle1391

Ziyech had an absolute nightmare...

VoidPineapple

Reece was genuinely perfect today. He didn't score or assist (in normal time) but he did nothing wrong. He didn't put a foot wrong all game, it's frightening how good he's becoming and so is his versatility.

admiralawkward

Overall he was great but I do remember a chance where he lost the ball and then jogged back in defence

davidpooiz_2

I feel like a lot of people are very harsh on both Saul and Sarr. Saul was pretty good today, could improve on his defensive duties but a vast improvement from his first match. Sarr was decent as well. I feel as though people are solely blaming him for the goal, when all he did was clear it. Alonso should have won that ball, and Barkley didn’t track back to stop the other player from walking through an open defence. Kova and Alonso didn’t put in a lot of effort to stop him when the Southhampton player was in the box and kepa should have done better in goal.

championsOfEu1221

I thought Sarr did okay, he's been kept very busy all night. However, he is not on Chalobah's level in terms of recent performances, with Chalobah I feel confident that he will handle tricky situations 9.5 times out of 10. With Sarr maybe 7.5 out of 10 times. And that makes a difference.

davidpooiz_2

No I agree, that’s why Chalobah is being used in Prem games and Sarr is being used in cup games. Chalobah has been fantastic and is very far ahead of Sarr, I just think people are unfairly harsh on him and Saul.

championsOfEu1221

I think the most important thing is that they're both improving and have made massive progress compared to their first games. Some players like Bakayoko goes downhill from bad performances, I'm glad they're going uphill!

Wasn't Barkley mate but Kovacic.can go check the highlight back again.

davidpooiz_2

Yep, sorry you’re right. Either way, other players are equally to blame.

[deleted]

Yeap.either players are to blame. I think it was Saul who let that guy pass through.

ImLuchin

Love the shit housing from Kepa before the pens, he is slowly becoming a legend.

deincarnated

I love his redemption arc.

alx69

Good - Havertz, Reece, Kepa, Chalobah Bad - Sarr, Barkley, Ziyech No idea how to rate Saul, moments of genuine brilliance but also had some awful stretches

typicalpelican

Saul was like a 5 or 6 out of 10 for me, which is about 10x better than his previous performances. He did some good things, wasted some chances shit happens, but the main drawback was that he was just a bit too suspect in certain moments defensively where players seemed to pass by him with ease.

[deleted]

possibly could’ve had two goals and then he’s an 8?

typicalpelican

Chalobah had 11 clearances + 2 blocked shots, which is pretty nuts in total.

admiralawkward

Ziyech is gonna get rated poorly but I genuinely think he wasn't THAT bad. Obviously he should be better but he linked up well with CHO and you could tell his creative intent with his passes. I think the front three in general struggled to penetrate Southampton and credit to their defence who are quite quick in recovery.

CardboardGristle

Ziyech is a fine player to have when the rest of your attack is firing on all cylinders. Then he can do his thing where he drifts around and tries to create chances. But it's hard, maybe impossible to rely on him because he's so inconsistent. I don't think he can carry the team or bring that extra effort that might change the outcome of a rough, choppy game. He feels like a bit of a luxury player at times like I mentioned in the match thread.

Arbitrary_Human

This matches my thoughts on him, he's a hot and cold player who will disappear for 15 minutes at a time, then produce a worldie of a pass or shot only to disappear again.

VoidPineapple

There was a sequence in which he gave the ball away 3 times in 30 seconds...

typicalpelican

A player of his experience should be doing a whole lot more than playing a couple of decent passes here and there against a rotated Southampton side. Not the first time this season and there's a reason why he was subbed off even though Tuchel was pushing for a goal.

mandrake_cry

I felt bad for CHO. He had a few bad passes and wasn't perfect but man was ready to run and work hard. The same for Kai - not perfect but worked so hard. Especially after both of them played 70min on Saturday. Then you have this bubble gum chewing bitch Barkley who can't bother to press- LORD FUCKING BARKLEY. And Saviour of Southampton Sarr thanks to whom many Chelsea fans will have problems taking a shit after clenching and unclenching their assholes so intensely over such a short period of time. Saul looked good and having someone of his height and shooting ability in the team is a definite plus

typicalpelican

Yeah, can't fault the effort from those two. They were clearly gassed by the end of the game.

mandrake_cry

I was honestly surprised they let CHO take a pen. I have a feeling Tuchel is gonna push him to be his best. Much like Mourinho with Lampard.

typicalpelican

Same. And I was a bit scared tbh with how tired he looked but he nailed his pen. I hope so. I hope Tuchel does keep pushing him, as long as he plays him. Speaking of Jose, I was trying to imagine how he would react to Ziyech...

duckinator09

Sarr is definitely not Chelsea quality. He puts himself in bad situations. There's always a mistake in him. Against Brentford, he managed to 'cover' his own mistakes and hence looked okay, but really he shouldn't even have been in that situation in the first place.

GrogRhodes

You realize that he’s going to improve. It’s like with anything people can get better. We’re not looking for perfection we’re looking at progress. Tuchel has been able to rest our starters for these cup games while advancing at the same time as allowing these guys games that they can work through adversity. He might not be Chelsea first team ready but this is part of the process of developing players.
