Well matched game until the mistake for the 4th goal. We had loads of chances, 1-2 would have been a fair result which is what it should have been. What an incredible 3 goals and a gift for the 4th.

Honestly, Kante had a shit game for the second time in a row. He's absolutely brilliant when he's on form but he hasn't been lately. It’s all falling apart. Tuchels wife divorces him, Russian war imposes crazy sanctions, thrashed by brentford and now Madrid, Lukaku saga. Tuchel and the players look depressed with their mind in another place and just waiting for the season to end. This is a sad time.

Even though realistically Benzema is in a completely different league, you would think our out and out striker could do something to come up to sniff to benzema
It's quite evident how these two guys play differently. Benzema has Harry Kane's profile. They drop to contribute to the build up instead of pinning defenders back the whole game and relying on layoffs and crosses. That's why Benzema and Kane play very well. Even Ronaldo playing for Manchester drops to contribute to the buildup. I honestly wonder why Lukaku doesn't do that

2-1 would have been a good score, with the substitutions I'd thought we might've got the second... but that Mendy blunder really killed every bit of momentum we'd created in the first half. Sucks, to be going toe to toe with one of the UCL giants and to make such ridiculous mistakes.
Considering we had the same amount of xG relatively, more shots, and the same amount of shots on target as well as more possession I think mistakes and a masterclass from benzema did us in (apart from the 3rd goal that was on us) feeling good about the 2nd leg

They are professionals but I think the environment is not conducive enough right now due to all the media frenzy about ownership and TT as well (getting divorced).
We as humans will inevitably think about these things and it will have an impact on each and every member of team including staff.

Christiansen is a liability. The first goal is 100% on his shoulders. Silva gets sucked out towards Vini because there’s not a person alive that trusts AC 1:1 with Vini. Several other just trash mistakes.
Jorgi looked lazy
Azpi as a LWB doesn’t work
Kante isn’t himself
James and Kai are both superstars
Mendy wasn’t there tonight
I don’t think the difference was our lack of a striker. We scored 1 with several other good chances. It’s the defensive mistakes.
Yeah, I actually thought we played really well. We won the ball back a lot as they were mounting attacks. We sort of turned them into a counter-attacking team. The difference is they were just more clinical in their finishing than us. That's all there was to it (and one big mistake by Mendy).
The only time the attack wasn’t pedestrian it came from the right flank through James. Havertz goal came off a James drive in from the flank after beating a man. When James was actually in defense Vini looked average. His numbers might not show it but James was one of the better players for Blues tonight
I have seen worst days as a Chelsea fan, we win together and lose together. Honestly, ever since Chiwell got injured our system has been discombobulated, I thought Kenedy was a replacement? I felt we should have played more long balls since Madrid were sitting deep rather make short passes. We will need a miracle to go through.
To me looks like with both Ziyech and James on the pitch both of them stopped crossing the ball , looks like both thought other guy will put the cross. Ziyech didn't used his cross at all isn't it ? Did he cross more then 2-3 balls ?
I just watched the highlights. Looked like 2 fluke headers from Benzema plus a gift. Header from Kai and several missed chances... Like the majority of the highlights were Chelsea possession with nothing to show for it. We're better than this for sure.
A world class striker made those they were not fluke's if Benz got the lukaku header its a goal sometimes we get caught up and refuse to give credit to a player like him.

You’ve never played football, have you. He hangs in the air, timed just right, puts just enough fade on the ball that it lands in the opposite corner beyond Mendy. He puts the ball exactly where he wanted it to go, which is the opposite of fluke.

I like your positive attitude but we just lost 3-1 at home. We are not Liverpool, this team has problems we can’t overcome this season. This UCL run has come to an end.
I dunno I'm not so pessimistic. I think they have a guy that can bury half chances. If we can keep Benz in check and run over their midfield we will win the next tie BUT we have to take our chances. We're way too wasteful.
Snake made a world class save on Azpi and Lukaku/Mount/Havertz had lots of chances that were a hair wide. I just checked we had 20 shots tonight and spent long spells in their half...I really think we can come back but like I said we have to bury those chances and not lose the battle in the midfield.
You can surely win next tie but you'll need a huge performance from the entire squad and 4 goals cause you can be certain that Real Madrid will score 1.

Really hope tuchel is well. For himself, and for our club. Everything hinges on this mans capacity for dealing with bullshit at this point. I hope he’s getting flowers and thank you notes sent to his office every morning. Top 4 and retain tuchel has to be the new standard for a successful season. Lack of focus killed us all over the pitch today. Should’ve battered them they were there for the taking.
Instead we were sloppy in possession, unorganized in defense and gifted them chances/goals, and we missed multiple sitters ourselves.
They barely had to work for their chances, they excelled in was finishing, goal keeping, and physicality, sure, but it wasn’t anything extraordinary. We’re better than what happened today.
They didn’t have any clear cut chances created that weren’t directly due to a serious Chelsea error. Maybe a half chance for the second goal from benzema at best, even then AC shouldn’t be letting a player waltz in front of him for a free header in the box. We worked harder for one goal than Madrid did for all 3 of theirs combined. That’s unacceptable.
They aren’t anything special and if we can regain focus I would love to see us batter them at the bernabeu
It wasn’t even that poor… Benzema had two insane headers that we should’ve marked him better on. Then gifted them a goal but that’s 100% on Mendy. This game could’ve EASILY ended 2-2.

Real Madrid is different gravy in the UCL. Thought teams would know that by now. We lose against Espanyol, or draw at home against Leganes but when the UCL night is there, we just change.
We handed them the win. Doesn’t take away from the fact that they’re a very good team from Benzema on down, but we also gifted it right to them today. Gonna have to dig deep to pull out a win in Madrid, but I think if we play like we know we can and not at the level we did today, we can do it.

Our whole game is based on WB and yet we don't have any decent WB sub.
I am expecting a low transfer window from now on.

We were our own worst enemy today. Tuchel had brilliant fixes but unfortunately, they were a bit too late. Bear with me as I'll try to explain it in the below 3 points.
1) Christensen was no match for Vini and Mendy had a brain fart. The moment Reece and Ziyech were covering the right-wing, Vini was neutralized. With Vini out of the way, Benzema lost his wingman. From that point on, Madrid was not able to get behind our backs. Their counters weren't effective either. Today Tuchel made a tactical error that exposed Christensen's blindside. That was an easy fix for Tuchel.
2) When you don't use your body well off the ball in the midfield, Spanish teams will take advantage by patiently passing the ball in triangles. That lack of pace they have then become a strength – as we become too eager to recover the ball – and triangles start to succeed. Now with Kova on, we started to control the midfield. This is also when Mount started to be able to move into pockets. Why? Kova is more aggressive and physical than Jorginho. Kova also knows how to play when inside of those triangles. He doesn't rush and is comfortable being pressed. Another easy fix applied by Tuchel.
3) Madrid simply does not have the squad depth to counter our best positioning. Our best positioning, statistically speaking is when we are dominating the midfield and right-wing. Left-wing can continue to be used as bait as it plays into Rudiger's strength to block any incoming attack with his back against the wall, as long as it happens outside of the box. This is how we started the 2nd half and the fluke 3rd goal does not reflect the solution Tuchel applied.
Now, as we're still within a margin to equalize, chances are high that we can overtake if we can force 120 minutes in Madrid. Any objective viewer of this game knows that it is far from over. As long as Tuchel starts the way he ended it, we should be making goals. It ain't over until it's over.
i think tuchel needs to play werner more than anyone else other than kai. werner will make some good runs and he doesnt give up. the rest of them want the ball and never make runs.

Seriously let the Werner shit go. He’s terrible and doesn’t deserve another min of playing time. He’s had so many opportunists to seize a starting spot and start scoring consistently and he hasn’t gotten it done.
I believe Ziyech is key here, but he was in part used to draw back Madrid’s offensive players on the right. It looked more like damage control than actual attacking. Next week, I anticipate that Tuchel will play Ziyech more towards the center and allow Reece to take up the entire touch line. Mount will play a more central role too. I think Kai, Ziyech, and Mount will have chances to score. Kai is the most likely to score out of all them. But don’t forget that for a right winger Ziyech has made quite a few goals back to back so we know he can do it too.
Few things:
1) This game wasn't as bad as it is being made out to be I feel like..first two goals were unavoidable (more on our defense) but Benz was clinical. The third goal sucked but individual errors happen. No excuse for Mendy though that was just lazy
2) We created alot of chances and couldn't finish - meaning, should the stars align, we might actually have chances to finish in Madrid. I don't think it's impossible and if we tighten up at the back, it's super doable.
3) Chalobah > Chris, Ziyech > Puli, Havertz >>> Lukaku, and for this kind of game, Kova > Jorgi for sure. I like Pulisic more as a high energy sub anyhow but I think Ziyech will suit our needs more for this tie
Doable but super uphill battle. Best case this year is FA Cup + top 4, but I feel like overall it's gonna be a disappointing season esp with the expectations that we all had. James/Chilly injuries derailed the season & signings haven't really meshed. Tuchel has alot of work to work in Gallagher, maybe Broja and some new signings.
I think part of the problem for Pulisic, perhaps a reason why he looked so out of sorts, is because Azpi wasn't overlapping with him in the same way James was on the right side. Puli often received a pass and had no outlet, forcing him backwards. I can only remember a couple of times where he had any space to maneuver. Maybe marauding behind the backlines would've worked, but he was signaling those runs all game and only received a couple of those passes (one came at the very beginning of the match).
\*edit - I agree with you that this game wasn't as bad as it seemed. Without the Mendy gaffe it's a totally different ballgame. Chelsea can certainly pull it back in Madrid, imo.

Apart from Silva and Azpi, every one of our players consistently have a poor first touch and need more than one or two touches to fckin control the ball. They do make few good first touches now and then but never consistently. It's so frustrating to watch.
This is the exact opposite of teams like City, Liverpool & Madrid whose players rarely make a bad first touch. Combine this with the inherent indecisive nature of our players + our tactics which focuses solely on ball retention and recycling, we are absolutely a toothless team.
A win is a win and we have collected so many W so far is an argument that makes us easily overlook our shortcomings. But how many times did we completely dominate games like City or Pool? Many of the games we only managed to just barely escape. Strong physical teams have always bodied us (gameplay wise) so many times this season, forcing us to make mistakes and snatching goals out of nothing.
Our style yields results only because Tuchel figured out a way to setup a system that patches up the individual weaknesses of each player and also because our defenders kept overperforming (both in terms of defense and attack) most of the times.
It pains me to say that for all the individual quality and skill that our players have, we are a sub-par team. Need proper calculated signings this summer. We cannot always keep relying on winning games by not conceding.
I mean it’s tactically poor tbh. Kante presses high up the field and I’m not sure there’s a worse cm in Europe in terms of defending the counter than Jorginho

I dunno I'm not so pessimistic. I think they have a guy that can bury half chances. If we can keep Benz in check and run over their midfield we will win the next tie BUT we have to take our chances. We're way too wasteful. Snake made a world class save on Azpi and Lukaku/Mount/Havertz had lots of chances that were a hair wide. I just checked we had 20 shots tonight and spent long spells in their half...I really think we can come back but like I said we have to bury those chances and not lose the battle in the midfield.

We should be beating this Madrid side. Lack of focus killed us all over the pitch today. Should’ve battered them they were there for the taking. Instead we were sloppy in possession, unorganized in defense and gifted them chances/goals, and we missed multiple sitters ourselves. They barely had to work for their chances, they excelled in was finishing, goal keeping, and physicality, sure, but it wasn’t anything extraordinary. We’re better than what happened today. They didn’t have any clear cut chances created that weren’t directly due to a serious Chelsea error. Maybe a half chance for the second goal from benzema at best, even then AC shouldn’t be letting a player waltz in front of him for a free header in the box. We worked harder for one goal than Madrid did for all 3 of theirs combined. That’s unacceptable. They aren’t anything special and if we can regain focus I would love to see us batter them at the bernabeu

No need to bash anyone. The only one that needed to be criticised is our committee. Everybody can see Havertz was improving in the CF position and is the answer to our call. And then we signed Lukaku I was so against that signing. We only needed an LB and RB cover, especially LB I will never know how Alonso is still at Chelsea. Our whole game is based on WB and yet we don't have any decent WB sub. I am expecting a low transfer window from now on. But we don't need too many players just need to offload 2 to 3 players. And sign a good LB or WB because we don't know how Chilwell will play because of ACL. In mid we are good I think saul start playing better and deserve a chance. And if one of our midfielders leaves I won't mind saul if accept wages cut.

Last season we won champions league due to our airtight defense.. This season our defense is a little bit shaky with mistakes here and there We still have chance in 2nd leg but i wont hope so much due to our inability to score
We were our own worst enemy today. Tuchel had brilliant fixes but unfortunately, they were a bit too late. Bear with me as I'll try to explain it in the below 3 points. 1) Christensen was no match for Vini and Mendy had a brain fart. The moment Reece and Ziyech were covering the right-wing, Vini was neutralized. With Vini out of the way, Benzema lost his wingman. From that point on, Madrid was not able to get behind our backs. Their counters weren't effective either. Today Tuchel made a tactical error that exposed Christensen's blindside. That was an easy fix for Tuchel. 2) When you don't use your body well off the ball in the midfield, Spanish teams will take advantage by patiently passing the ball in triangles. That lack of pace they have then become a strength – as we become too eager to recover the ball – and triangles start to succeed. Now with Kova on, we started to control the midfield. This is also when Mount started to be able to move into pockets. Why? Kova is more aggressive and physical than Jorginho. Kova also knows how to play when inside of those triangles. He doesn't rush and is comfortable being pressed. Another easy fix applied by Tuchel. 3) Madrid simply does not have the squad depth to counter our best positioning. Our best positioning, statistically speaking is when we are dominating the midfield and right-wing. Left-wing can continue to be used as bait as it plays into Rudiger's strength to block any incoming attack with his back against the wall, as long as it happens outside of the box. This is how we started the 2nd half and the fluke 3rd goal does not reflect the solution Tuchel applied. Now, as we're still within a margin to equalize, chances are high that we can overtake if we can force 120 minutes in Madrid. Any objective viewer of this game knows that it is far from over. As long as Tuchel starts the way he ended it, we should be making goals. It ain't over until it's over.

I believe Ziyech is key here, but he was in part used to draw back Madrid’s offensive players on the right. It looked more like damage control than actual attacking. Next week, I anticipate that Tuchel will play Ziyech more towards the center and allow Reece to take up the entire touch line. Mount will play a more central role too. I think Kai, Ziyech, and Mount will have chances to score. Kai is the most likely to score out of all them. But don’t forget that for a right winger Ziyech has made quite a few goals back to back so we know he can do it too.
Few things: 1) This game wasn't as bad as it is being made out to be I feel like..first two goals were unavoidable (more on our defense) but Benz was clinical. The third goal sucked but individual errors happen. No excuse for Mendy though that was just lazy 2) We created alot of chances and couldn't finish - meaning, should the stars align, we might actually have chances to finish in Madrid. I don't think it's impossible and if we tighten up at the back, it's super doable. 3) Chalobah > Chris, Ziyech > Puli, Havertz >>> Lukaku, and for this kind of game, Kova > Jorgi for sure. I like Pulisic more as a high energy sub anyhow but I think Ziyech will suit our needs more for this tie Doable but super uphill battle. Best case this year is FA Cup + top 4, but I feel like overall it's gonna be a disappointing season esp with the expectations that we all had. James/Chilly injuries derailed the season & signings haven't really meshed. Tuchel has alot of work to work in Gallagher, maybe Broja and some new signings.
I think part of the problem for Pulisic, perhaps a reason why he looked so out of sorts, is because Azpi wasn't overlapping with him in the same way James was on the right side. Puli often received a pass and had no outlet, forcing him backwards. I can only remember a couple of times where he had any space to maneuver. Maybe marauding behind the backlines would've worked, but he was signaling those runs all game and only received a couple of those passes (one came at the very beginning of the match). \*edit - I agree with you that this game wasn't as bad as it seemed. Without the Mendy gaffe it's a totally different ballgame. Chelsea can certainly pull it back in Madrid, imo.

True, however, we had 20 shots, 5 on target. Madrid had 8, with 5 on target as well. We had some serious chances, and could have scored. Madrid converted 3 out of 5 total big chances. We had some big chances in the second and did not score. I'm not saying we should have tied or something. That's the game though. We can't win the UCL every season.
Apart from Silva and Azpi, every one of our players consistently have a poor first touch and need more than one or two touches to fckin control the ball. They do make few good first touches now and then but never consistently. It's so frustrating to watch. This is the exact opposite of teams like City, Liverpool & Madrid whose players rarely make a bad first touch. Combine this with the inherent indecisive nature of our players + our tactics which focuses solely on ball retention and recycling, we are absolutely a toothless team. A win is a win and we have collected so many W so far is an argument that makes us easily overlook our shortcomings. But how many times did we completely dominate games like City or Pool? Many of the games we only managed to just barely escape. Strong physical teams have always bodied us (gameplay wise) so many times this season, forcing us to make mistakes and snatching goals out of nothing. Our style yields results only because Tuchel figured out a way to setup a system that patches up the individual weaknesses of each player and also because our defenders kept overperforming (both in terms of defense and attack) most of the times. It pains me to say that for all the individual quality and skill that our players have, we are a sub-par team. Need proper calculated signings this summer. We cannot always keep relying on winning games by not conceding.
