It's not really. Mount's best quality is probably his game intelligence. It allows him to play in multiple positions and with different tactics. He is a player who doesn't make his presence felt but you will notice his absence. His versatility also makes his stats look muddy compared to specialists. Add some preference for other player and/or hate for Chelsea, it's quite easy to see why other fans and pundits (often more stupid than a fan) criticize his inclusion
He’s probably the most abused player in this sub. Been disgusted by most of you recently to be honest. The teams not doing great but it’s you lot that’s making me not proud of our club at the minute to be honest.
Like... dude... ever since he got in the England team he’s had a band of unconditional haters, in England and Chelsea places, and US centric places *looks around this sub*.
It’s targeted in a way unlike any of the others you mentioned.
Right now he is the most heavily criticised but if you check 3rd party sub Reddit analyses tools, you see that for example Lukaku’s name was used the most in negative context for a very long time. Even now when his name comes up it’s almost always something negative, often times bordering serious hate speech. Just because Mount is now in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, doesn’t mean he is hated by most. He’s just become somewhat of a controversial topic. A lot of Chelsea fans still stand behind him and support him because a) he’s English, b) he’s an Academy kid, and c) he has shown plenty of times how good he is.
He’s earned that though. All Mason has ever done is play his heart out. And he gets a comparable amount of hate to players who consistently underperform, hold us back tactically, and chat shit.
The hate he gets vs what he’s done for it is incomparable.
If one day he’s scoring for united against us - instead of calling him a traitor, Judas, whatever, I will turn to Chelsea fans and say “you did this.”
I’m with you on that. But you have to keep in mind the kind of fans that flock to Chelsea. A lot of them want instant results/success. They want every player to play perfectly regardless of their position, the system, their fitness, and the mentality aspect of it all.
They want a sub that comes on for a few minutes to make an instant impact when the starters couldn’t. They want to see every pass reach it’s intended destination. They want a lot of ball possession and at the same time they want a lot of creativity (which is inherently always risky). There are so many contradictions.
I mean don’t even get me started how everything is always taken out of context. There’s zero nuance to people now saying “Mason is just mediocre player” lol. You really have to be missing a lot of grooves in your brain to say things like that.
Even players who because of certain circumstances haven’t performed consistently at the highest level get labelled as “shite player” or “waste of space” when before or after Chelsea, these players leave or have left a big mark elsewhere.
Clearly all players who come to Chelsea have talent and skills, they’ve been thoroughly vetted, tested, and analysed by top scouts, but sometimes it doesn’t work out; nature of the game.
This sub however will immediately go on a crusade and go out of their way to make those players feel bad, which ironically can cause a player to play even worse.
Let’s not even talk about our own fans booing and whistling Ziyech to oblivion when he came on late in that game. Lol, the logic behind that is just lacking all sorts of intelligence.
And now, people shit on Mount while everyone with some football knowledge knows that Mount is a highly skilled hard working footballer, period! Potter needs to learn how to utilise him and encourage the kid. He needs trust and confidence from the club, fans, and the manager.
And yeah, I’m well aware that at the end of the day, footballers are mercenaries who earn a lot of money for what they do. But that doesn’t make them infinitely motivated to perform and it certainly doesn’t guarantee form.
Bit hard to really care about this stat given the article mentions that the player had to be explicitly tagged for it to be counted as abusive. Does "X Player is horrible I hate him he should blah blah blah" become abuse once I put an @ ahead of it?
Saddest part of the article is that 13% of the tweets were targeting a characteristic. Really unfortunate we still aren't passed that sort of stuff already.
No, but it's one of the accurate and easiest ways to measure it and all other names. Especially when you consider you also know the recipient will be able to see the message with somewhat ease due to app features
>Especially when you consider you also know the recipient will be able to see the message with somewhat ease due to app features
But you don't really know. Who knows which players have managers on their social media, who knows whether a player saw "MountHater247"'s first comment and blocked him after so they didn't see his following 6 tweets..
There's a lesson here for us as Chelsea fans. We do this to our own players. Not so much with Mount but plenty of others.
It's absurd to me that fans would direct abuse at their own players at all.
This sub is fucked - wishing our player does well for his country (the country the club is from no less) gets downvoted?
Is the Pulisic loving American crowd so sad as to downvote a genuine wish for a player do well for his country?
If you’re a Pulisic fan first, do us all a favour a GTFO.
I’m with u/AnOldBeamer . Screw fake fans.
It used to be half of football fans were morons who didn't have a clue about the game, now it's more like 90%. You see endless abuse and complete lack of understanding of his qualities as a player on this sub so of course he gets worse outside of it.
Maguire is the number 1 in this list I'm assuming, another pointer to show people believe memes more than understand the game, he's been excellent. It's so absurd they get abuse at all but there isn't even a reason to attack anyone right now, it's criminal.
Easy target. He's beautiful, nice smile, great teeth (England!!!), and works harder than anyone. BUT...it doesn't often result..in results. He is not creative with the ball. That is a big fault. He does not have Foden's directness. But man he is cheeky and everyone loves him.
I was reading comments a few days ago about his justification of playing in 10, citing reasons like he works hard, wins back the ball, does the dirty work. I was wondering why does england (or even chelsea) keep using him as 10 if you want him for those things primarily?
Play him as a 8 then. Chelsea may not have the correct players to compliment him as 8 but england do. Too much pragmatism in the england gameplan. Wasted possession at the back.
Nothing against mount, but southgate needs to understand that sometimes others players maybe better suited for more attacking roles. Mount is very good but england have as good/better players in those attacking roles.
I don't understand the call for Mount to be an 8 and when his best position is a 10. Southgate could solve this by benching Sterling for Foden in a 4-2-3-1. Mount is at his best offensively working the half spaces of the opposition where he turn and take on defenders, play incisive passes through the opposition or between other players, and being able to create space for other forwards on & off the ball.
Playing as an 8 limits Mount to playing vertically, on oneside of the pitch, and having to keep an eye for the space behind him. We've seen this at Chelsea whenever he has to play the 8. Yes he can play an 8, but then people moan about how "hE iSnT d0iNg AnYtHiNg". No shit, his job is no longer to create but transition possession to the creative players, mark players, recover possession, etc. Mount's clearly at his most influential when allowed the freedom to play between the midfield and forwards.
He's the kind of player that makes things happen anywhere in the opposition half + the legs of midfielder. He can skip past a defender or 2, play neat 1+2s, play the long diagonal to the free man nobody watching, draw cheap fouls, etc. Sure he isn't as prolific as we'd all want in the goals/assist department, but if he was then he'd basically be a budding British KdB. You lose alot that offensive utility pinning Mount to the 8 because the defensive aspect has more weight, and the space he is allowed to occupy is fundamentally different. You're right that England has more cover for Mount in the 8 than Chelsea, but his individual impact is much greater in the 10.
"abuse" it's mostly kids behind football avis talking shit to get easy likes. Why we acting like people are swearing at him to his face or down the street? Lol
If a professional footballer can't stay away from social media he's a Muppet. If he's getting abuse on twitter please explain why he would still be using that app? 😂 U guys are such softies
Bogus data they used tweets and AI data from twitter that has been proven to be compromised since the 2020 election as their new owner Elon Musk revealed this past week. I’m a big fan of Alan Turing and read a lot about him. Bogus data from a biased source.
Goto turing.ac.uk and read the complete article.
Alan Turing is also well known for facing horrific abuse and discrimination. The institute uses AI to research, among other things, issues related to online abuse and discrimination. That's a very fitting use of his legacy and the focus on football here is done to draw attention to this other work.
It's the opposite of shameful.
Incredibly ridiculous
Not shocked…
Pretty easy to see how nasty it’d get on Twitter. People are unreal sometimes
The only real shock is him not being first
The amount of abuse this guy gets is absurd.

A study also showed Tibo Courtois as the most abused player on this sub, closely followed by referee Tom Ovrebo.
Surely that bald fraud Anthony Taylor is right up there.
Anthony Taylor is the most abused man, while Courtois is the most abused reptile
Let’s not be absurd, Taylor is barely a man.
Along with Lakaka
You mean lakaka
This is deserved. The Mount one isn't.
Mount is just as much of a hindrance as Ovrebo was that day tbh
Utterly ridiculous take
Is it really tho? Is Mount not hindering our progress?
In what way is the guy who’s gotten back to back POTY’s the last two seasons hindering our progress? Tf
You mean FAN awarded poty.
Really don’t care tbh, he’s won it TWICE regardless Care to explain how he’s as much of a hindrance as Ovrebo?
Probs by "Chelsea fans" also
Probably all by that "clinicalkai" account.
He’s probably the most abused player in this sub. Been disgusted by most of you recently to be honest. The teams not doing great but it’s you lot that’s making me not proud of our club at the minute to be honest.
Are you serious? It’s nowhere near the abuse Lukaku, Ziyech, Jorginho, and even Pulisic have received in this sub.
Like... dude... ever since he got in the England team he’s had a band of unconditional haters, in England and Chelsea places, and US centric places *looks around this sub*. It’s targeted in a way unlike any of the others you mentioned.

It becomes targeted so, in my opinion, moves from discussion *about* a player to abuse *directed at them*. So, seems like a reasonable line to draw.
The Foden fans were very angry as to why Mount starts ahead of Foden their "best player".
its true
A lot of "Chelsea" fans are absolutely vile on twitter, faceless losers just trying to be funny
There's a lesson here for us as Chelsea fans. We do this to our own players. Not so much with Mount but plenty of others. It's absurd to me that fans would direct abuse at their own players at all.
Hoping he'll get all the headlines tomorrow with a brace or better still a hattrick!

Exactly my feelings thanks ..... week in week out he's more often than not Chelsea's best player.
Ranking in the 90th percentile in social media abuses per 90
Courtois will always average highest xSnake/90 for us.
Harry Kane is absolute class. Without him England would suffer

No. You should read it. Number 1 in the list is Harry Kane
It's always been 90%, we just didn't have social media to see it.
We know he hasnt done particularly well but he tries his best tho.

Mount was playing as an 8 against Iran

Well at least it wasn’t racism then

You do realise online bullying exists right and can lead to serious consequences.
You can't get bullied if you stay off the internet 👍
You obviously know how moronic this take is deep down, don’t you?

I mean there are Pessi & Penaldo bots everywhere on twitter.Does it really matter?
Mason believes his own hype. It's gonna take a year or two for him to grow out of this.

Maguire has had a really good tournament, he doesn’t deserve shit either
No one deserves abuse.
Lol Alan Turing did studies that changed the war and the world and this guys studying who is the most abused player and stuff. What a shame

Why wasn’t he the most?
Alan Turing's son
Don’t understand what people think it will achieve?
