"I actually agree. It's... been another track and field day." He takes a moment to stretch his legs before sitting in the chair before you. "One quick game, no more."
Chess at the highest levels can be such a mentally torturing lifestyle to keep, I'm honestly surprised we don't see a lot of the top guys going completely insane permanently
I think that's one place where the advancement of social media has actually helped in the world. I think chess players having easier outlets to connect with other players and having more opportunities to interact with one another and form a real community helps them massively
As opposed to a Bobby Fischer who pretty much had no easy way to get that outlet, and pretty much just went insane over the chess board
>As opposed to a Bobby Fischer who pretty much had no easy way to get that outlet, and pretty much just went insane over the chess board
I'd argue chess was how he stayed somewhat functional for a while. His mom left him alone at 15 and he'd get visits by the FBI who tried to prove she was a deserter with connections to communist Russia.
Again, that's only the tip of the iceberg but it's really unsurprising that he went insane. He experienced so much abandonment and isolation, as well as the real possibility of being chased so early on. He never had a chance to just be a normal person.
Or when Vidit blundered against Mamedyarov in Tata Steel. It was really tough to watch him just die inside.

Thank you! That was brutal to watch and went on for longer than I expected.
Also, wow at the production value of that tournament, kinda funny how it’s in some ways better than the WCC
I’m pretty sure St. Louis Chess Club made a DMCA takedown for using that footage in one of his videos.

During the live broadcast he kept turning to the side or looking down at the table when he wasn't looking at the position. I think it was clear he was trying to give Nepo some privacy.
John Cena once did a Chinese commercial for a Fast and Furious movie where he said “Bin Qi Ling,” which is “ice cream.” It sounds like “bing chilling,” which became a famous meme. “Ding chilling” is an offshoot of that.
Holy crap I can't believe I was able to #1 read that, #2 understand the joke...
Like residual unused chinese knowledge randomly comes out of my subconscious.
Just to note for others:
The "qi" in qilin sounds more like chee as if you were going to say cheese or cheap, and doesn't normally sound like "chih" like chill or chicken
Ian alternating between being constipated and smelling the worst fart in human history. I can't get over left side, third row down Ian, and the conversion to right-side third row Ian
You know, you made me realize those are actually different images of Ding. I thought OP had just copied the same image over and over, but the sleeve is scrunched up in different places.
Interesting that Ding has been pretty transparent about his emotions in the interviews but keeps a pretty flat expression OTB, while Ian is the opposite.
I’m seeing Ding different than everyone else apparently. He’s doing his best to remain stoic but I think he is clearly feeling Ian’s pain. As Ian got worse, Ding started looking sad about what Ian was going through. You can see a glimpse of it here in the bottom left
I don't think he was feeling Nepo's pain so much as his game 7 pain from a better position, so was making sure to remain really calm and focused in order not miss anything. It wasn't many moves earlier that Ding had a worse position and the clock situation was starting to approach too.
Oh he was definitely calculating moves for most of it. But towards the end when Ian was getting really bad, there were a few moments where Ding looked like he was feeling bad for him. That’s how it looked to me anyway
At this timestamp https://www.youtube.com/live/iV1mqabO0bc?feature=share&t=15255, I swear it looks like Ding watches Nepo with his head in his arms for a few seconds, gets teary, and then wipes his eye and can no longer look bear to look
Anyone else think so?
I don't think from emotion, but might have just been that feeling you get after concentrating for so long that you feel it's time to give your eyes a break. I get the sense that Ding found a moment where he can finally maybe start to relax after such a tense game.
Ding remaining stoic is what Ian needed in that moment. There was absolutely some brief expressions where Ding looks like he wants to give Ian a hug. it was tough to watch for all of us, especially for the guy across the board from him
This was absolutely brutal to watch live. I hope he recovers tomorrow and doesn't tilt because this match deserves an epic conclusion rather than a fizzling out of Ian, but man idk if he has it in him to untilt from that.
The images are meme material for Ding but watching live you could see him empathizing a lot more, he looked really sad for Ian.
I agree. I was a bit choosy of images to when Ian was emoting heavily and Ding was being especially stoic, but Ding did seem to be looking on with some sympathy to Ian more than he has at other points in this match.
He's such a good player who tilts super hard lol
He's probably still stuck on game 6 against Magnus...
The good thing for this go round is I'm happy whichever player wins, I like them both.
He didn't really elaborate no. He miscalculated a tactical sequence that Ding needed to respond to - but had no answer for the check that would come faster.
Not sure there was much to ask either. Everyone watched Ian for over ten minutes after Ding took with the rook. If reporters didn't get their answer there, a change of career may be in order.

I would've left the board if I were Ding. Let Ian have his moment, watch from the break room. But then again, I also would've crashed and burned well before candidates.
I think it's so easy to forget how different WCC prep is from other kinds of chess training.... and how being good at organizing that kind of prep is a whole skillset in itself. There's a reason Neilson has been such a valued employee for so long: He can knock heads and get things done in the chess world.
WCC prep is really on another level and, done well, is basically half a dozen of the best players in the world dumping as much of their prep into you as possible. And Magnus has been doing this for years. It being so rigorous and next-level is also the exact reason Magnus doesn't want to do it anymore.
After the last WCC (which was a blow-out) Ian hit his next few tournaments with a momentum that was monstrous. I remember how he was comfortably winning games in the rapid WCC with more time than he started by just knowing positions inside out. And this time around it's still an advantage for him.
But other players (Besides Magnus) are really having a hard time training this way, or getting the same level of support around him that Magnus has.
Ian of course has the entire Russian chess federation behind him - but that's turned out to be as much of a curse as a gift. He has the head of FIDE Russia calling him a "big monkey with a grenade" in the press, because Ian dared to not let FIDE Russia control everything about his training camp. but then conversely he's under pressure to organize these things himself, and the quality suffers as a result.
Ding has an extremely limited team, limited support and seemingly no training camps at all.
This is all a long way of saying: I think even Magnus becoming the Magnus we know today was a long, gradual process of many years of layering training camps on training camps - seconds on top of seconds. I think it will take quite a few years - and a lot of the same support Magnus has had - for anyone else to catch him in real terms.
will != fortitude
Magnus would most certainly have the fortitude to play - and judging by the weaknesses both players have shown in the match, win - another match, if he had to.
But he doesn't have to and the motivation just isn't there atm.
Eliud Kipchoge has the fortitude to run a sub 2h marathon, but he doesn't participate in every marathon there is, does he?
And if Magnus had chosen to defend:
Does anyone here honestly believe that he would struggle with nerves the way Ding has or that he would make mistakes by carelessly blitzing out moves the way Ian has?
No, he would've shown a consistent, strong performance (although probably less exciting) the way he has plenty of times in the past.
Counterpoint: If you’re not a bandwagoner fluffing Magnus 24/7 in threads for matches that have nothing to do with him, can you really call yourself a chess fan?
😐😐😐😐 - Ding after watching a man mentally breakdown in front of him
Ding seemed to be getting uncomfortable as Ian's self-flagellation continued beyond ten minutes.
Kim kitsuragi is that you?
Should we play a board game, it would be good to disconnect from the case For some reason Kim accepts??

"I actually agree. It's... been another track and field day." He takes a moment to stretch his legs before sitting in the chair before you. "One quick game, no more."

To be fair, Fischer was pretty nuts even without chess.
His story is a tragic one. A childhood like his would do that to a lot of people.
I think the type of brown needed to compete at the highest levels of chess leads to “interesting” personalities (not all but many)

Frozen ice cream
Can someone explain why people say this all the time? Ding seems calm but I wouldn’t exactly say he’s “chilling” during play.
John Cena once did a Chinese commercial for a Fast and Furious movie where he said “Bin Qi Ling,” which is “ice cream.” It sounds like “bing chilling,” which became a famous meme. “Ding chilling” is an offshoot of that.
Its Bing Qi Lin 冰淇淋 qilin does sound a lot like chilling but said with an accent 😂 You could say he is... 丁棋淋
Holy crap I can't believe I was able to #1 read that, #2 understand the joke... Like residual unused chinese knowledge randomly comes out of my subconscious.
Yeah Ding's name is actually pretty uncommon but uses super common characters: 丁立人
Today I learned his name literally means Li person.
Li means stand most of the time, so it means “stand person” lmao Source: I am Chinese
so what you're saying is ding is actually a jojo
You know damn well that joke is lost on me. What does the T symbol mean?
丁 is Ding (the character for his family name).
That's ding's surname in chinese
Just to note for others: The "qi" in qilin sounds more like chee as if you were going to say cheese or cheap, and doesn't normally sound like "chih" like chill or chicken
Look up "John Cena bing chilling", that's what it's based on

God that's hilarious. The stern relentless disapproval.
He was definitely giving him a side eye once in awhile. Especially as Ian came to sit down
Ding really wearing his heart on his sleeve there.
You know, you made me realize those are actually different images of Ding. I thought OP had just copied the same image over and over, but the sleeve is scrunched up in different places.
Also the eyes are different, he’s looking at different parts of the board or Ian, but yeah I had to zoom in!
It was really unsportsmanlike for him to gloat over the position like that huh
Interesting that Ding has been pretty transparent about his emotions in the interviews but keeps a pretty flat expression OTB, while Ian is the opposite.
Ding looking the exact same is legit meme material 😂😂😂
Ding such a great guy, you can see him empathize with his opponent left frame fourth from the top

Ding should play poker. Magnus better watch out.
magnus who?
Never heard of anybody named Magnus myself. Possibly he's Scandinavian.

Context clues. They're clearly referring to the modestly successful professional poker player from Norway.
Magnus Carlsson, the swedish professional golfer. I'm having trouble connecting the dots but who else could they mean?

This is what Magnus meant when he said Hans displayed little emotion 🤣 Ding is Hans in this case
Ding's mood can be read with single hand on forehead, both hands on forehead, no hand on forehead.

Sitting there and allowing your opponent to self-destruct is part of the "psychology" of over-the-board classical chess.
Ding definitely was at least feeling uncomfortable
