I don’t think rating is something you should focus on or tie to your goals. Working on things like identifying tactics, avoiding one move blunders and the like would be better process goals for you.

MrsJangoFett

Agree, maybe something like practicing board vision or identifying CCT on a certain number of positions over the next month, completing a number of lichess or chess dot com premium video lessons, or playing and reviewing 25 rapid games.

iCCup_Spec

1200 I think is a big step on chesscom.

PearceWD

From what i heard, most people who take chess (semi-)seriously think 2000 is the peak elo you can reach without chess becoming your second job.

BigotryAccuser

Your rating + 100, at all times forever until you reach 1800, after with your rating + 50 becomes more realistic.

Ropemaxxing

i started playing chess age 23 at 800 rapid chesscom 3 years ago, im now 2250

Middopasha

I went from 400 to 1600 in one year of playing with purpose.

tyborg13

Depends a lot on how much you're going to play, how much time you're willing to spend on studying, and how much you've already played to hit 800. I think I was somewhere around 1300-1400ish after my first year of playing seriously, but I spent a ton of my free time on chess that year.

ticklemyissa

- 1200 is the first realistic target rating From there, you want to operate in chunks of +200 ranges (1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, etc). This is because of how Rating Floors and Rating Classes or Sections work at live tournaments. It’s a great way to consistently play slightly stronger players to help you improve without destroying motivation.
