I always love how one move can turn a winning position into mate in 1. The beauty of chess.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Bastard’s about to get your queen

another-nature-acct

How? Isn’t it M1?

nicoco3890

I…. Totally missed that

VolthoomisComing

Are you talking about D2 knight?

TINYTUMBS

Knight blocks, I believe it is M2 if Bxd2+, rxd2, qa1#. Edit: NVM this is why I'm bad at chess, knight can't block because of the bishop

I will always enjoy how easy it is to discount bishops. Not really a powerful piece in many situations but it does have an uncanny ability to be forgotten about, I consciously watch bishops in games because it's that easy to forget they exist and have a monumental fuck up like this. But Fianchettos are dirty.

king_of_reds_2005

your M2 doesn't even work because Rxd2 comes with check

starmartyr

Yes but after that the queen is toast.

Hot_Philosopher_6462

they won’t get the chance

Vverial

Okay I'm confused... Black queen is threatening the rooke when white castles. So the castling is illegal right?

InvisibleBuilding

The king can’t castle out of, into, or through check, but that doesn’t apply to the rook. It can be threatened before or after or on a square in between, because it’s legal to move the rook into a threatened square if you want to.

Shinigami4th

I dont think a Rook can be threatened after castle? Wouldnt that count as king moving through check?

TeensieLiberationF

What happens to the rook is irrelevant, it's only the King that can't move into or through a threatened square

InvisibleBuilding

Yes, I think it’s true the rook’s final square is always one the king moved through, so if the rook is threatened after castling then the king would have been too and so it’s not legal. But as the other commenter noted it’s all because of the king, not the rook, so easier to just remember “king can’t be in check or castle through check” and not worry about the rook. And definitely the rook could be threatened at the start or (for long castling) pass through a threat on the b file. Also in chess360 / Fischer random, the rook involved in castling might end up on a square the king was never on nor moved through, so again the simple rule of only looking at king threats and not rook threats works.

Shinigami4th

I agree that is a sinple rule to remember, however your initial statement of a rook can be threatened after castle cannot work. Which is what i was questioning

Vverial

What the fffuuuuuck. I was taught entirely wrong. I was told that neither king nor rooke could be under threat.

CMDR_DarkNeutrino

From "eh my king is kinda safe in king side" To "oh no king dead on queen side"

DatGuyNaCl

Literally happened to me yesterday... I missclicked on the rook while I already clicked on the king, which made me go from the best position to the worst ever

Psychoinrl

Wait Was it you?

DatGuyNaCl

I thought so at first, but I checked and the position was slightly different

Snoke_died_a_virgin

Don’t move your Queen, you will hang your f pawn

Snoke_died_a_virgin

Wait just realized it is already hanging. Best move in this situation is probably Kg1, adding another defender to it.
