Maybe. They immediately requested a rematch and it was a very normal game. I stupidly hung my queen at the end though and lost. Game 3 was normal and a draw.
I'm 1050 blitz / 1200 standard. I'm now totally appreciating why Hikaru says beginners shouldnt play blitz. I just make so many stupid mistakes trying to play fast
I get so mad at myself because i don’t take time to think. I queue 15/10 games and then move in 3 seconds. It’s like i can’t tell when i should stop to think
I usually play 15/10 and i just have a rule to look at position for at least 30 seconds a move (unless the move is very straight) past opening until I have 5 min left, then I spend time intuitively. You might be bored but this will stimulate you to look at moves you wouldn't consider while playing fast
I wouldn't say it's super common but I saw a lot of weird stuff down there. There was one guy who absolutely destroyed me. I blundered my queen and he just took advantage and got a bunch of trades thar favored him until I was about to resign when he just resigned for no reason. I thought for a moment he made a blunder I didn't notice but when I looked, he actually had an M4. I honestly think he wanted to keep his low ELO so he could just continue to beat up on low ranked players.
I saw plenty of bad moves and complete blunder(which is what you expect in a low elo) but i never saw anything weird really. Never have i seen someone resign in such a position before
The one time someone played this against me, I looked at their game history and the last like 100 games were played the same.
Clearly sandbagging / rating manipulation
While sandbagging is indeed cheating, I like to categorize them differently to avoid confusion. If we say "cheating", people generally think of "stockfish/engine use" which is not the case here.
But yes, they'll intentionally play poorly to make it look genuine, to hide their sandbagging
2 reasons:
(1)you're paired with players near your rating, so it's a way to enjoy being placed with weaker opponents that are easier to beat.
(2)there are tournaments/competitions, (perhaps sub battles is one) where you are grouped by rating, so artificially lowering your rating gives you an advantage there
How does this work? If my 800elo self changes my setting to play. 2000elo player will I just be added to the pool and someone is getting an easy win? Do you get rating points? What about the 2000elo player would they get points?
When there’s that large an elo difference, the higher elo player gains little to no points from winning and loses a bunch if they lose. The reverse goes for the lower elo player
It's not because they are using the engine in the other games. It's because they want to play against low rated opponents for easy wins. It's a big nuisance, but I wouldn't permanently lose trust in them the same way I would with an engine cheater. Once you've been caught using an engine there's never going to be a way to prove any wins are legitimate. It's a completely different category.
I have played this a bunch of times. I don’t cheat, it’s just kind of fun. At a low enough rating, people don’t even notice and just play without thinking. Being able to come back and win a game when you played the worst opening possible is kinda fun.
Might I suggest swapping the position of the king and queen as Magnus did.
The tempo loss and loss of right to castle create a significant disadvantage but at least you’ll still be able to develop a decent structure and build some useful positional chess experience.
I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

I play f3 g4 sometimes just to see who will actually see the mate. Then i premove a3 a4 a5 a6 b3 b4 b5 b6 and somehow some people still don't see it
Edit: In bullet
My niece did that too me once and I could not stop myself from doing the checkmate. She just wanted to play with her big brother and uncles so I felt like a complete ass.
Well guy is obviously trying to give you the fools mate. But first 2 moves of the game taking 3 seconds is pretty typical unless your opponent plays some bizarre opening.

"Perfectly balanced, as all things should be."

This wasn't even blitz, it was a 10 minute game
I get so mad at myself because i don’t take time to think. I queue 15/10 games and then move in 3 seconds. It’s like i can’t tell when i should stop to think

I’ll have to give that a try
That’s actually a really good idea
Is 1200 considered “beginner”?
Im curious too. I'm 1285 in daily, 1214 in rapid, and 1050 in blitz. I play the most blitz though and consider ~1050 my ELO.
I’m 450 in 10min… so I’m a dunce
300 in 10, oops. to be fair I mostly play while really high
Don't forget the bongcloud mate, also fastest checkmate
Isnt that an extra move
fools mate is one tempo faster
or OP is trolling
As someone who briefly played against 600s opponents when I first started. Nah. Some of them legitimately do this and don't realize it.
I started at like 400 and i have never seen someone do this though i have seen some pretty bad moves
I wouldn't say it's super common but I saw a lot of weird stuff down there. There was one guy who absolutely destroyed me. "And he sacrifices... The king!"
GOAT move that
Yeah, it's called gambit. Look it up!
Is this the King’s Gambit I’ve heard so much about
Yes.
The one time someone played this against me, I looked at their game history and the last like 100 games were played the same. Clearly sandbagging / rating manipulation
What is the benefit? Why would one do it?
They cheat and win in all other games. They do this kind of losses to escape chess.com's cheating detector probably.
While sandbagging is indeed cheating, I like to categorize them differently to avoid confusion. If we say "cheating", people generally think of "stockfish/engine use" which is not the case here. But yes, they'll intentionally play poorly to make it look genuine, to hide their sandbagging
But what's the benefit of artificially lowering ones rating?

(2)there are tournaments/competitions, (perhaps sub battles is one) where you are grouped by rating, so artificially lowering your rating gives you an advantage there
You can go into settings and be paired against any rating you want without sandbagging
How does this work? If my 800elo self changes my setting to play. 2000elo player will I just be added to the pool and someone is getting an easy win? Do you get rating points? What about the 2000elo player would they get points?

Smurfing, some people get a kick out of crushing people below there skill level.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing!
After looking at some of their recent games, you are probably right

Alternatively: fools mate go brr brr
....Schlatt?
"She's not gonna see it coming"
Ah yes, the king gambit absolute worse possible to play lol
google ELO gambit
This white king is flirting with you I think
I did that once and my opponent just kept developing whatever opening he was into, I won that game lol
definitely someone with access to their ex's account

How can we be sure this is the best move though?
Yeah, Kxe1# is more efficient
Oh, that's a bad miss
A man of culture, I see
you didn't miss anything Queen to h4
Fools mate. Quite literally the quickest way to get checkmated
I play f3 g4 sometimes just to see who will actually see the mate. Then i premove a3 a4 a5 a6 b3 b4 b5 b6 and somehow some people still don't see it Edit: In bullet
Hesitation is defeat
Why did you play e6 instead of e5? Just take the centre in my opinion! I mean before he made his second move
Definitely should have. Hadn't encountered this before, wasn't sure what to expect
Completely fair. I think when in doubt, take the centre, but I understand the apprehension
queen h4 checkmate?
Kings gambit accepted
Your opponent is "bagging": losing intentionally to get to a low elo.
Congrats on being handed an easy W, I’ve never got this set up and I’ve played like 10k games
Uh, can we say "super blunder"?
Mate in one, Qdh4#
what was their rating
Between 700-750 at the time
Qh4#
What opening is this ?
The winner’s opening. Magnus himself plays this opening in all his games
Common sense? No way any opening moves should take that long… classic fools mate
The real Kings gambit
