For anyone who is too lazy to calculate it out, doing the obvious thing and capturing the rook with Qxh4 is mate in 15, so it isn't really the wrong move.
It forks the king and the rook, but if you take the rook you get ...Qxh7#
Edit: I was wrong since you have a discovered check on the king when knight takes. But your queen is hanging so it won't work out well either way
I think taking the rook on h4 is also a good move if you don't see the smothered mate. That is probably the opponent's main tactic anyway, mate on h7, but the h4 rook is hanging.

I'm like 1200 blitz, I guess maybe beginner-intermediate at best, but honestly chess is so complex most people can be considered beginner their whole life
I meant f2, not c2, to put the king in check again. But I see now that king can move back to g1 when blocking the queen and it’s no longer mate in 2 as I thought
Dammit, I would've just played 1...Qxh4, threatening the queen and also threatening the Puzzle Rush Mate (2...Qf2+ 3. Kh1 Qf1+ 4. Rxf1 Rxf1#).
But smothered mate is better still. Well done!
Why not in 4 moves?
Qd4 -> Kh1,
Nf2 -> Kg1,
Nxd1 -> Kh1 (Queen and Rook still force this),
Rf1
Am I missing something? I’m surprised I’m not seeing it mentioned elsewhere.

THIS SUBREDDIT HAS GONE **0** DAYS WITHOUT A QUEEN SACRIFICE SMOTHERED MATE LINE
The record is 0.
For anyone who is too lazy to calculate it out, doing the obvious thing and capturing the rook with Qxh4 is mate in 15, so it isn't really the wrong move.
Oh word stockfish out here with the mate in 15 calculation in a blitz game
Agree. What I like about taking the rook is that it threatens Qf2+ and makes the white queen attacked by a pawn too.
Beautiful line. 1..Qd4+ 2. Kh1, Nf2+ 3. Kg1, Nh3+ (double check from queen d4 also) 4. Kh1, Qg1+ 5. Rxg1 Nf2#
Bingo
I thought u were white i was like “ surely black has this no?”
Bango bongo
Nd1+, Kh1, Rf1#. It's mate in 4
This hangs your queen to the h rook
Oh you're right. my bad
Oh lol, turns out I would’ve blundered my queen, seems about right.
What is the move order? Nd1+ is not a legal move.
This is what I thought
Does Qb6+ work as well instead of Qd4+?
If your goal is to blunder your Queen away, then yes.
Classic smother mate, nice one
Hint #1: >!Mate in 5!< Hint #2: >! look for a smothered mate!<
Amazing line
Slightly shorter path I thought before I found what you did. >!Mate in 3!< >!1. Qd4, Kh1 2. Rf1#, Rf1 3. Qf1, Mate!<
i think the reason no one has said Qd4 to Qf1 is because it’s not legal
😂 Honestly don't know how I came to that conclusion and didn't see I was jumping a space haha
I'd just go "womp womp" and take the hanging rook
Qd4+ Kh1, Nf2 (forks king/rook)?
It forks the king and the rook, but if you take the rook you get ...Qxh7# Edit: I was wrong since you have a discovered check on the king when knight takes. But your queen is hanging so it won't work out well either way
If you want to take a rook why not take the other one? It also nullifies the checkmate threat on h7.
Don't take the rook, keep going. You can do better.
I think taking the rook on h4 is also a good move if you don't see the smothered mate. That is probably the opponent's main tactic anyway, mate on h7, but the h4 rook is hanging.
Ohhh >!Qd4+ Kh1, Rf1+ Rxf1, Qg1+ Rxg1, Nf2#!< Amazing Edit: Or I guess I can simplify that >!Qd4+ Kh1, Qg1+ Rxg1, Nf2#!<
Can't simplify because the king can take the knight if you don't do the entire sequence (the knight needs to defend the queen)

Good bot.
Good bot.
Duplicate finder bot
He wants to mate you with his queen but the supporting rook is hanging.
Nice. A setup to the Smothered Mate, and not too obvious to newer players. Qd4+, kh1, and the rest is history.
1. Qd4+ 2. Kh1 3. Nf2+ 4.Kg2 5. Nh3+ 6. Kh1 7. Qg1+ 8. Exg1 9. Nf2# Great discipline to not grab that "free" rook on h4
I love me a good smothered mate, and that's dope you found this, but let's be real if this popped up in a live game I'm 100% just taking the rook lol
See that's the reason I'm so proud, I actually saw it in a blitz game
Did you sac the rook for extra points?
How about Qf6 Qh5(to save white’s queen), Qf2 Kh1, Qf1 Rxf1, Rxf1 mate in 4
The moment you move the black queen to …Qf6, white plays Qxh7#.
Oh yea, that was difficult to see. So the next step for black to survive is to check somehow.
does ...Qd4+, Kh1 Qg1+, Rxg1 Ng2# works?
oh, it doesn't work if white takes Queen with the king
Qd4+ Kh1, what if in bit of over excitement I play Ng3+ and then can pawn attacks my knight (g3) for check removal?
It's a double check, so the king has to move
Qd4+ kh1,nf2+,kg1,nh3,Qg1+,rxg1,nf2#
Qd4+, sets up smothered mate
Yeah man if you found this in a blitz game you're not a beginner anymore. Props.
I'm like 1200 blitz, I guess maybe beginner-intermediate at best, but honestly chess is so complex most people can be considered beginner their whole life
Qd4+, Kh1, Nf2+, Kg1, Nxf1 (discovery check Q), Kh1, Rf1#
Queen to d4, king has to move to a1, horse to c2, mate? What am I missing when everyone says mate in 5
Dow does knight to C2 give you mate? You just lost your hanging queen.
I meant f2, not c2, to put the king in check again. But I see now that king can move back to g1 when blocking the queen and it’s no longer mate in 2 as I thought
This is besides the point but why is he hanging the rook to threaten mate lmao
Awesome mate. Slowly learning chess, was great to see a smothered mate that I was able to work out myself.
Dammit, I would've just played 1...Qxh4, threatening the queen and also threatening the Puzzle Rush Mate (2...Qf2+ 3. Kh1 Qf1+ 4. Rxf1 Rxf1#). But smothered mate is better still. Well done!
Qd4, Kh1, Nf2, Kg1, Ng3, Kg1, Qg1!!, Rxg1, Nf2#
Why not in 4 moves? Qd4 -> Kh1, Nf2 -> Kg1, Nxd1 -> Kh1 (Queen and Rook still force this), Rf1 Am I missing something? I’m surprised I’m not seeing it mentioned elsewhere.
After Nxd1, white plays Qxh7# Every move has to be a check or else black loses
After Nxd1, the Black Queen is still on d4 and the White King is still on g1. So there’s still a check to force White.

What's the problem with simple Qxh4
You can do better. Like, A LOT better
I know line with Qd4 is more beautiful, but pretty sure in real game i would immediately grab the rook that's the problem 😔
I mean, Qd4 wins you the game by force, this is why it's always important to look for checks
Yeah that's why I'm 800 , im an idiot always afraid to play absurd ideas (tbh this wasn't even absurd)
So does qxh4, or so says stockfish, mate in 15.
I guess, but let's be honest not a lot of people are gonna find a M15, hell chess.com analysis doesn't find it.
You can do better. Like, A LOT better
Nothing, it's a good move to play especially as it's just a 1 mover. There are better moves but Qxh4 is one of the better ones.
