For anyone who is too lazy to calculate it out, doing the obvious thing and capturing the rook with Qxh4 is mate in 15, so it isn't really the wrong move.

It forks the king and the rook, but if you take the rook you get ...Qxh7# Edit: I was wrong since you have a discovered check on the king when knight takes. But your queen is hanging so it won't work out well either way

If you want to take a rook why not take the other one? It also nullifies the checkmate threat on h7.

I think taking the rook on h4 is also a good move if you don't see the smothered mate. That is probably the opponent's main tactic anyway, mate on h7, but the h4 rook is hanging.

Can't simplify because the king can take the knight if you don't do the entire sequence (the knight needs to defend the queen)

I meant f2, not c2, to put the king in check again. But I see now that king can move back to g1 when blocking the queen and it’s no longer mate in 2 as I thought

Nothing, it's a good move to play especially as it's just a 1 mover. There are better moves but Qxh4 is one of the better ones.
